When the war between Iran and Iraq broke out, perhaps
everyone wondered how this war would end. But, no
one could have guessed the tragedy at the end.
When Saddam Hossein gave the order for the operation
named Al-Anfar which would have changed the course
of the war, he could not probably predict that years later
this order would be screamed to his face by a judge
sentencing him to death because of a crime committed
against humanity.
March 16th, 1988, entered the history books as BLOODY
FRIDAY, when during the closing days of the war, eight
MIG 23 aircrafts of the Iraqi Air Forces undertook a
poison gas attack to Halabja. The attack killed up to
5,000 people, most of them civilians.
Halabja is the bleeding wound of human dignity. The
traces of the holocaust are still visible on newly born
children, although more than two decades have passed
over. Some newly born are disabled or struggle for their
life. Chemical and biological elements trickled into the
soil and continue to poison people. The committed
crime spreads over time through the cultivation of this
soil. It mostly has revealed itself on children and is still
revealing.

FOOTPRINTS AYAK IZLERI documentary
Flesh decays, rock erodes, iron rusts; it is for this reason
that the only thing a person leaves behind is memories
and the most powerful records are the ones that have
not been written, because they are living and because
here living is learning itself.
“Footprints” is taking you to a region that cannot be
located by coordinates. It takes you to the past times of
concealed faces and uncomprehending lives. This is the
story of brides sailing to the other side of the river. It’s
the story of a pair of eyes that are in love. And
sometimes, a mother’s crying voice will ring in your ear.
Figures imaginary enough not to be real and yet as real
as you are shall speak to you in these stories.
Our destination is the Eastern and Southeastern
Anatolian Regions of Turkey, a thousand years back in
history. This is a distinct and unique region. Unique,
because it’s like no other.
We are progressing in the hallways of memory and
listening to thousand years old memories from their
inheritors. Some are legends, some are stories of the
past. Each take us to another. We are tagging along with
folk dances with these stories. We follow their
footprints…

Master of inscription, in other words, pen…Although it
is not a common sight these days, it still holds a special
place in the hearts of those who follow the path of
calligraphy. Against the deceitful allure of the ballpen,
and the attractive speed and ease of use of the
computer, pen still preserves its standing as an
indicator of prestige!... Even against the lazy hands that
avoid writing, the pen continues to sustain and increase
its importance thanks to those who still cherish its value.
The documentary “Master of Inscription” tells the story
and the passion of the pen from the view of the poet-
writer Sunay Akın, writer Buket Uzuner, writer-architect
Aydın Boysan, artists Nezih Danyal and Izel Rozental,
journalist Doğan Hızlan, academicians Prof.Dr.Kadir
Cangızbay and Prof.Dr.Nazife Güngör along with
collectors, stationers and even its repairman. The
program shows that although its name resembles a
close relation to pencil, pen carries much deeper
meanings than simply being a tool of inscription.
Today, where we even have digital signature, the digital
superiority of technology over pencils and pens is still
doomed to fail against our love for “qualified
inscription”.Pen still preserves its importance in terms
of “etiquette” for some and “respect” or “passion” for
others, as well as preserving its title of “Master of
Inscription”

SALT OF THE WOOD is the story of the transition of two
great gifts of nature, water and tree, into a wooden boat
with human labor.
The wooden boat production has been a tradition since
the archaic era in Anatolia. Thanks to the abundance of
chestnut, oak and pine trees in our country, boat
masters made this tradition last for centuries. Turkey
sends boats to seas worldwide and thus takes its place
in the boat market.
SALT OF THE WOOD follows the trails of boat making,
from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. By bringing
masters and boat fans together, it examines the
differences between wooden boats and their future.
Watch in 3 parts as wood comes to life, washed by its
master’s sweat and the salt of the sea.

The thirteenth and twentieth centuries are two distinctcenturies of the last millennium that have greatlyinfluenced human history - centuries of wars, faminesand shifting geographies. Alongside all theseabominations, they are also distinguished by thescientists and sages they contributed to human history.Jalal ad-Din Rumi is one such sage, a Sufi raised in thethirteenth century, whose importance cannot bedisputed from his century to our own. However, thosewho have told us about him since the days he was alivehave all related their own versions of Rumi. The sage, who put his entire thought and identity on full display inFih-i Ma Fih and Majalis al-Saba, has come down to usin terms of analyses of the images in his poems. He hasbeen described only in terms of what he produced in the
last decade of his 66-year lifespan. Scarcely anymention has been made of the land he was born in, hisfamily or its roots. In this work, our goal has been to seekout the roots from which Rumi drew nourishment.

Produced by
Mihriban SEZEN, Yesim SONMEZ
documentary
“The Language of the Tattoo” tries to look at the codeswhich history, belief and tradition draw on bodies, andto understand and document the language of fadingsymbols. On the other hand, it looks at what kind ofmarks these old lines leave on young bodies. Tattoo isthe painting on body which has been drawn since pasttimes. Its origin is a tacit communication language, aform of art which is buried deep in history.
Sign is older than letter and in the archaic language oftattoo, meanings of symbols are read. The tradition oftattoo carries the signs of beliefs and culture livedthousands of years ago. It is a deep mark left on humanbody by pain, fear, joy and hope, but mostly desire.
These lines that reach today from thousands of years
ago, still speak the language of tales, myths andlegends in Anatolia, especially in Mesopotamia, in Urfa,Viranşehir and Mardin for instance. While the marks ofold times on old bodies are being erased quietly, newmarks, new paintings appear on younger bodies.
Do these new signs, which appear to be strangers to thehistory of these lands, create a new language that turnsits face to the West? In the sense of their equivalences inlife and the meanings they bear, do the traditional linesof sacred, belief, and desire and the rough and colorfulpaintings that resemble the chaos of modern lifeseparate or join together?
THE LANGUAGE OF THE TATTOO seeks answers to all ofthese questions.

Produced by
Muhammet SIMSEK
documentary
THE PAST IS A WOUND IN MY HEART is the story of the
immigration of labour force from Turkey to Germany
fifty years ago.
Mehmet Ali Zaimoğlu is an immigrant who went to
Germany in 1961 as a worker. When he was retired after
40 years, he preferred to live in Germany. TRT sent an
invitation to 50 immigrants in order to revive the first
train journey from Istanbul to Munich in 1961, which is
also a symbolic start of the immigration to Germany.
Mehmet Ali Zaimoğlu is among the retired immigrants
who had joined the first journey and received the
invitation. The new journey means a new adventure for
Mehmet Ali Zaimoğlu. His wife also joins him in this
journey, where the couple will have the opportunity to
travel also to their past along with the new excitements
and close friendships. The cheer and happiness of the
new journey will accompany the sad success story of the
couple. The train leaving from Turkey passes through
Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Austria. It
arrives in Munich in five days, where a surprise awaits

WILD ANATOLIAN HORSES YILKI ATLARI

Bayram Ali YANGIN
documentary
As a tradition in Anatolia, once the work of vineyards
and orchards and harvest are completed, in order to
decrease the expenses, the villagers set the horses free
to the wild. These horses are called “jades.” These jades
soon became one with the nature. They proliferated in
their natural environment and produced groups. But
then they faced dangers, and now their numbers went
down to hundreds. Partly they can be seen running wild
in groups.
Our camera-crew observed them in their natural
habitat. They witnessed the fierce behavior among the
group leaders and how they endured against thirst
along with their struggle against heat in the day and
cold in the night. They observed how they reacted
against wolf pack raids, and watched how the colts
behaved.
But they were not alone during this observation. There
were foreign and local tourists who were also curious
about their life in the wild.
The first episode of the Jades went by like this.
The second episode of this documentary will be
produced in the winter season. The second episode will
cover the fight of these horses against snowstorms and
freezing cold.

WOODEN MOSQUES FROM YESTERDAY TO TODAYDUNDEN BUGUNE AHSAP CAMILER
Produced by

documentary
Every living creature indispensably exists in this world.
But expressing his existence to future generations is
only specific to mankind.
We work, we produce and we leave our works to the
future.
Such is woodwork, the work of Anatolian people from
yesterday to tomorrow.
Wood is a cradle to their children, a coffin to their dead
and a sanctuary to their prayers.
WOODEN MOSQUES FROM YESTERDAY TO TODAY is the
story of an adventure. It comprises wooden mosques
which were built with a traditional building technique
called “Çantı”, similar to the dovetail technique,
starting during the period of the Turkish principalities,
continuing with the Seljuk Turks and having vanished
today.
The program also shows mosques with wooden pillars
whose number has dropped down to 11 within time.
The efforts to protect these invaluable cultural works
from the impact of time, nature and technology never
wear off.

What does the traditional music tell us besides
presenting anthropologic data on a time where the soul
of the epoch (Zeitgeist) is alienated? What does the
traditional music, that is the deepest voice of cultures,
mean for us?
In fact, like anything else, music is not independent
from your story. Every nation would like to show that its
voice is worthy of being heard.
Ethno-Rhythm gives the opportunity to see that the
history of traditional music and that of nations follow
parallel roads.
Ethno-Rhythm suggests you cultural and historical
readings through a “local”, “Turkish” point of view by
showing the similarities between the cultures and the
traditional music of different countries.
Ethno-Rhythm is a documentary on the history of

On every channel, in every newspaper, you can find
some important health advice from some attending

Have you ever wondered how the doctors who always

We not only wondered, but also dropped by their houses
and kitchens and asked them the question personally.
This is how My Doctor’s Kitchen was born. In each

he/she cooked personally.
One of the most enjoyable episodes was when we were

Even though he defines himself as a ‘humble village
musician’, the UNESCO has already chosen him as a
“Living Human Treasure”.
Hayri DEV who lives in the Gökçeyaka Village of Çameli
District in Denizli has transformed the interesting music
that the women of the western Taurus mountains make
in order to encourage their men.
He started playing the 3-stringed instrument which he
always carries around with himself and his whistle pipe
which has been always in his inner pocket since he fell
in love with the daughter of his neighbour while being
a shepherd in the mountains at the age of 13.
Since that day, he performs the music he learned from
his grandfather and father to bring the goats to the
plains and to chat amiably with his fellow shepherd
friends.
This is the story of the interesting life of Hayri DEV who
has been chosen “Living Human Treasure” by UNESCO.
His music was dicovered by the musicologist Jerome
Cler from the University of Sorbonne in 1992.

The well-known story of the Hatay region within
Antakya started thousands of years ago. Routes of
tribes, who immigrated from Africa to Asia and Europe,
had passed through Anatolia and of course through this
region; while civilizations were established and
demolished, lots of heritages had mixed with each
other. That’s why this geographical region has been
reflecting for many centuries ethnical, cultural and
religious colors and voices in harmony.
Antakya is situated on the junction where East meets
West. It at the same time is a center, from where
Christianity has started to spread. The Cave Church of St.
Peter, located at the skirts of mount Starius, 2 kms from
the city center, was originally a natural cave, carved
into a church, and is now one of Christianity’s oldest
churches. It was there, that the converts were called
Christians for the first time in history.
The church is an important center, where one of the12
Apostles, Peter tried to spread Christianity following

The inventions of paper and pen are two of the most
significant occurrences in the history of culture. There is
no doubt, that they play a crucial role in the
permanence of knowledge.
There have been times, when these two objects became
more than just a means of knowledge. They have turned
into a form of art in masterly hands. And people,
burned in the fire of knowledge, gave their lives on the
road to transmit it. Sometimes paper and pen turned
into ashes in the hands of people who were afraid of
knowledge. But Phoenix gathered up the ashes and
scattered them again to the children of knowledge, so
that paper and pen again became mediators for the
dreamers of eternity.
The 4-episode documentary The Confidant of the

Jerusalem: Stone and People brings the story of peace
and tranquility the city has had in its history of 4000
years. The film underlines that nearly all of these
peaceful times were lived under the reign of the Turks in
general and the Ottoman Empire in particular.
Contrary to modern media, which shows Jerusalem in
the center of conflicts, this documentary shows that
peace is nevertheless possible in this city, which is
considered to be sacred by the three world religions.
On the other hand, it corrects the misbelief, that not
only the Ottoman period is to be remembered when we
talk of Turks and Jerusalem together, that there are also
other Turkish states that ruled over Jerusalem, like the
Tulunids, the Palestinian Seljuqis, the Khwarezmian
Dynasty and of course the Mamelukes.
Jerusalem: Stone and People consists of 13 episodes,
each of which independently visits sacred places,
makes a trip to the history and culture of Muslims,
Christians and Jews. Watch all of these through the
window of turkish-islamic tradition – a heritage of the

decreasing in number day by day in Anatolia. The
water mill is one of the first and most important
technological inventions of mankind and is also a rich
cultural heritage.
This documentary tells about the stories of two different
water mills in two different villages. In the village of
Akkaya in Giresun, the mills are operated by women
whose leaving for the mills involves certain rituals. In
the mills, where wheat, corn and barley are ground into
flour, the most important concept is the miller’s right.
The water mills constructed by benevolent people are
left to the use of villagers, and the villagers don’t make
any payment for using them. Whereas the miller in
Tortum-Erzurum operates under a system of trade
based on miller’s right – a kind of a barter-system.
In Erzurum, in some occassions a mill serves as a
cultural center and even as a center of entertainment.
This documentary reflects the mill culture as it is
narrated by the villagers themselves.

The history of rose is as old as the history of mankind. In
the course of time, Isparta and its vicinity have become
a magnificent rose garden where the roses which yield
the best oil in the world are being planted. Among the
manufacturers of rose oil, the local peasants of Isparta
take the first place in the world.
The process of yielding the oil is an adventure in itself.
This process, during which the delicate pink rose tries to
yield its oil without losing the smell of its leaves, is really
a hard and long adventure. The rose neither has the
patience to wait nor likes the rush. While yielding its oil,
it acts coyly. Since the grower knows how coy it is, he
shows a great patience.
Abdullah Yıldırım who lives in the village of Büyük
Hacılar in Isparta, has spent his years for growing and
trading roses. This documentary shows within a daily
routine of the family Yıldırım the diffuculties of this
work, the growth of the rose, the picking up process, the
older and the latest techniques for producing oil, and its
exportation. And in the meanwhile, we witness the
hopes of his family on the magnificent leaves of pink.

In search of the answer to these questions, we’llwitness how the masters devoted their lives and hearts tothis craft, and how they transferred their feelings, hopesand desires to that new piece of work they handled.
The Secret Of The Master reflects the world of the oldmasters of Grand Bazaar. Located in Istanbul, the GrandBazaar is one of the oldest and largest bazaars in the worldand it gives shelter to a 500 years old tradition of Turkishjewellery. We experience this design tradition with respectto the creation of a ring called “Divanhane Çivisi” (Nail ofthe Palace Parlor), which is one of the traditional jewelleriesof the Ottomans.
Actually, what the masters produce is not a merely preciousring. It is just a new piece of work produced as the outcomeof a very old system of work created by the joint efforts ofexperienced masters of the Grand Bazaar. In order to haveothers like something, they first have to like it themselves. The essence of this secret based on patience andconfidenceis linked with the power of the tradition enjoyed.

The Ottoman Empire after being collapsed wasreplaced by the young Turkish Republic. The lastarticles of the Treaty of Lausanne signed on July24,1923, delineated Turkey’s present borders.
On March 3,1924, The Turkish Grand National Assembly
passed a law, putting an end to the caliphate, thus to the
last tie between the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish
Republic. Under this law, the caliphate was abolished
and Sultan Abdulmecid and his family exiled. There
were 36 men, 48 women and 60 children, a total of 144
people, i.e., 144 members of the Ottoman dynasty. Each
person had been given 1000 British Sterling and a
passport valid through one year. There was a notation
on each passport which said that it could only be used
for exit from the country of issuance.
A train at the Sirkeci Station departed on the evening of
March 5, and at the same time a ship pulled up anchor
at a nearby wharf, the train was headed for Switzerland
while the ship was going to sail to Beirut. The sound of
the train whistle at a quarter to nine seemed to
announce the fact that the members of the dynasty that
had ruled over three continents for six centuries had to
leave.
They were now stateless and neither was there a
Sultanate. From then on, others would go on to write
history. As for their history, it would be completely
different than the one before.

“I am not inside of the time

Four watch-makers living in the world of antique clocks.
Their lives are far away from hurries, since they lead a
calm life without any boundaries of time. They prefer
solid and hermit lives. Compared to ordinary people
they perceive time differently and lead it accordingly.
Clocks are not only instruments for measuring time.
When you meet these people, time changes, it slows
down. You feel yourself out of your life, flowing down
the current of a smooth river. If you are in television
business, then this may turn into a problem. While you
swagger in their quiet world, you also have to
accelerate for your occupation. Furthermore, you have
to challenge with their hermit personalities. It is almost
impossible to crack their hard shell, touch their core and
make them express their feelings without ‘using any
words.’ Because they just live without speaking. During
the interviews, you get only a few words from them.
Actually you are far away from their vast knowledge of
time and clocks. You can only record their love for clocks
and how they started their careers.
