Teatroteka is a series of film adaptations of work by young Polish playwrights, produced by Documentary and Feature Film Studios (WFDiF), Poland’s largest state-owned film production company. Teatroteka represents a new way of thinking about adaptations of theatrical works, in both the artistic and the production contexts. The films are created by young artists, oſten making their débuts. With the benefit of the studio’s facilities and technical support they have the opportunity to produce intriguing and innovative work. The idea of the project is to use the poten- tial of film technology to bring to the screen the best in young Polish drama: contempo- rary works, oſten wrien in a “post-dramatic” form, differing in their style and conventions from classical drama. Over the past 15 years, a new generation of authors writing for the stage has emerged in Poland. They have created their own original language, means of expression and form, enriching contemporary drama by addressing issues relevant for young people, and their perspective on the world. Young Polish playwrights deserve to be promoted, so as to reach a broader audi- ence. This is the main goal of the project. Teatroteka is also a space for directors of the younger generation, who, despite having significant achievements in theatre, have thus far lacked opportunities to create their own original audio-visual works. The innovative formula and high artistic quality of the series is established and maintained by producer Włodzimierz Niderhaus and Teatroteka’s Program Council, whose members include Zenon Butkiewicz, Krzysztof Domagalik, and Maciej Wojtyszko. Teatroteka’s screen adaptations are achieving recognition at international festivals, notably the Houston International Film Festival where, in the past three years, Teatroteka produ- ctions have received Platinum, Silver and Gold Remis. Another huge success was the Grand Prix at Two Theatres: Sopot 2015 and a range of other awards at this festival for Teatroteka productions. Additionally, Teatroteka series have been recognized by Teatr magazine as the most important new development in the field of theatre adaptations in Poland. Teatroteka performances are screened in Poland and around the world and since 2017, a dedicated festival Teatroteka Fest presents the latest productions created as part of the annual Teatroteka series. All of these initiatives are quite popular and are appreciated by the audience. Between 2013 and 2018, forty-five original productions were created for the Teatroteka series. This boxed set, which contains ten plays, is the fourth volume in the series, with previous box sets being issued in 2015, 2016, and 2017.
