The country’s premier developmen-tal-level skaters will take another step in their journey to realize their potential as top senior athletes when they arrive in North Carolina for the inaugural National High Performance Development Team Camp near Charlotte, Jan. 26–28. More than 180 athletes at the juvenile, intermediate and novice levels made the National Development Team and earned the right to attend the camp based on their placements at the U.S. Sectional Singles Finals, U.S. Pairs Final and U.S. Ice Dance Final in November. “They’ll be exposed to the highest level of off-ice faculty and get a preview of what the top level of skating is like, but at the same time remembering that they are this age and this is what they are needing to learn,” Justin Dillon, director of high perfor-mance development at U.S. Figure Skating, said. “In the jump classes, for example, they will work on their triple jumps and combi-nations — that’s their development piece — while we offer them the best possible
resources to help them along.” “These high-potential athletes should essentially come to the camp one or two years; we want to accelerate them through the system and get them to the junior and senior levels,” Kelly Vogtner, senior director of special projects at U.S. Figure Skating, said. “We’ll help them build a solid founda-tion and accelerate their exposure to Team USA and high-performance programing.” National Development Team athletes will start by watching their senior counter-parts practice and compete at the 2020 TOYOTA U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Greensboro, January 21-26. Skaters will observe their specific discipline alongside a team leader from U.S. Figure Skating. An inspiring athlete welcome and key-note presentation is planned in Greensboro prior to the team being transported to the Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail, about 90 minutes away. The camp features competitive group training, both on and off the ice, which rotates between instruction sessions and sessions where athletes showcase their best skills. On-ice sessions will feature skating
skills, step sequences, performance, jumps, spins, etc., and are unique for each disci-pline. Off-ice sessions will include specialty dance sessions, lifts, sports science, learn-ing from officials, preparation for Team USA and unique performance sessions. Present-ers will include top U.S. specialty coaches, performers from “Cirque du Soleil” and “So You Think You Can Dance International,” sports psychologists, biomechanics experts and former Olympians. Staff from the Unit-ed States Olympic & Paralympic Committee will be there to conduct off-ice testing. The training camp will conclude each night with singles and pairs athletes ob-serving the World Junior Team Selection Camp — a simulated competition from which the team to represent the U.S. at the 2020 ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships will be selected. Simultane-ously, ice dance athletes will participate in a competitive show emceed by Olympic silver medalist Paul Wylie. “U.S. Figure Skating’s International Committee is going to be looking at all of the skaters at the camp and assess their potential,” Vogtner said. “They’ll provide feedback and offer suggestions. “This is a great opportunity for them and is a significant step in their skating jour-ney.”

had the good fortune to stay close to home for their entire 17-year competitive career. With “The Moms” at their side and elite coaches such as Marina Zoueva and Igor Shpilband, and fine facilities nearby, Davis and White put together a magical journey.
They are the longest-tenured ice dance team (1997–2014) in American histo-ry, winning 30 titles in eight senior seasons. In their run-up to the 2014 Olympics, they were undefeated for two seasons.
Davis and White are the first Amer-ican ice dance team to capture Olympic gold (2014) and the first to become World champions, having earned that title twice, in 2011 and 2013.
They remain the only ice dance team in the world to win five consecutive Grand Prix Finals (2009–13), and their six con-secutive U.S. titles (2009–14) are a record. Davis and White are also the first ice dance team to receive all Level 4s for each of their nine elements of the free dance, at 2006 NHK Trophy.
But it was the 2014 Olympics that truly set the team apart.
Coming in as the defending Olympic silver medalists, Davis and White wanted more. In the inaugural Olympic Team Event — with White elected team captain — they chose to skate both segments of the com-petition instead of resting to focus on their individual event. True to form, Davis and White posted record scores to lift Team USA to a bronze medal.
Just days later in their individual event,
Davis and White again shattered Olympic records, defeating training mates and de-fending Olympic champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada.
Longtime role models and supporters of underserved youth, Davis and White were among the first to volunteer for “Classroom Champions” and continue to support the Ronald McDonald House, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Scott Hamil-ton CARES Foundation, Kristi Yamaguchi’s Always Dream Foundation, Figure Skating in Harlem, Figure Skating in Detroit and the Special Olympics. They also played a key role in U.S. Figure Skating’s “Your Voice” athlete safety campaign.
Today, you can find them performing in shows around the world or reporting and giving commentary during skating compe-titions.

tenacity and toughness remain the hall-marks of her career.
As a young athlete coming up the ranks, Meissner kept her eyes on the prize, becoming one of only a handful of skat-ers to win the U.S. novice (2003), junior (2004) and senior (2007) titles. Competing against the likes of Mi-chelle Kwan and Sasha Cohen at the end of their careers and with coach Pam Gregory by her side, Meissner helped usher in the era of big jumps. At the 2005 U.S. Cham-pionships, at age 15, Meissner’s rare triple

The most accomplished ice dance team in U.S. history headlines the U.S. Fig-ure Skating Hall Fame Class of 2020. Meryl Davis and Charlie White, the first American ice dance team to win an Olympic gold medal and a World title, will be formally inducted into the Hall of Fame during an on-ice ceremony at the 2020 Toyota U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Greens-boro, North Carolina.
The six-time U.S. champions will share the spotlight with World and U.S. cham-pion Kimmie Meissner, who was only the second U.S. lady to land a triple Axel in competition, and coaching great Kathy Ca-sey, whose technical expertise provided the pathway to excellence for many top skaters around the world.
MERYL DAVIS AND CHARLIE WHITE By their own account, Meryl Davis and
Charlie White have taken each other’s hand “tens of thousands of times.” Now they will walk hand in hand into the U.S. Figure Skat-ing Hall of Fame.
From the first time the 8-year-old White and 9-year-old Davis were paired on the ice in Michigan to when they stood to-gether on the Olympic podium as champi-ons in Sochi, Russia, Davis and White have shared a remarkable journey. Growing up just minutes from each

Axel earned her the third step on the podium alongside Kwan (gold) and Cohen (silver) and a note in U.S. Figure Skating history: The feat was only the second time an American woman land-ed a triple Axel. In 2006, Meissner joined Cohen and Emily Hughes to form the U.S. Olympic Team. It was a unique expe-rience for the youngest athlete on the U.S. team. Meissner finished sixth at the Games but was determined to do more. On the flight back home to Bal-timore, both of her eardrums were ruptured, making it challenging to train for the 2006 World Championships. But tenacity and grit again won out, as Meissner landed seven triple jumps — including two triple-triple combi-nations — in the free skate to earn the World title. Now holding the mantle of favor-ite, the Towson, Maryland, native also won the 2007 U.S. title and 2007 Four Continents Championships, but injuries prompted her to end her competitive career in 2008. Today, Meissner returns to the U.S. Championships as a coach. Her student Mia Eckels is competing in the junior competition in Greensboro.
KATHY CASEY Olympic and World coach Kathy Casey was as beloved for her exacting nature on the ice as for her playful per-sonality off it. And her natural curiosity fed both. Casey’s career spanned more than 50 years, advancing the biomechanical studies of jumps and helping skaters correct technical aspects of their per-
formances. She was so instrumental in this study that the U.S. Olympic Com-mittee named her its Sports Science Coach of the Year in 2005. Casey’s first coaching job was in 1962 at the Lakewood Winter Club in Tacoma, Washington. While there, she began training Scott Davis, a boy from her hometown of Great Falls, Montana. In 1990, Casey replaced the leg-endary Carlo Fassi as the director of skating for the Broadmoor Skating Club in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where she led the program until 2000. Davis followed Casey to Colorado Springs and went on to win two U.S. titles (1993–94) and compete at three World Championships (1993–95) and the 1994 Olympic Winter Games. Among Casey’s other students were Rosalynn Sumners, Scott Hamilton, Paul Wylie and Jill Trenary. Casey was the official U.S. coach at three Olympics and was well known for her “Kathy Casey Seminars,” held across the world. In 2006, she joined U.S. Figure Skating as director of per-formance enhancement and later sat on its board of directors. But at heart, Casey was always a coach, serving as PSA president from 1989 to 1994 and sitting on the USOC Coaches Committee. The PSA gave her numerous awards and inducted Casey into its Hall of Fame in 2008. Casey died in Colorado Springs on Sept. 16, 2019, at age 79. More than 140 friends and family came from across the United States to attend her “celebration of life,” fittingly held at the World Figure Skating Museum and Hall of Fame, where her U.S. Hall of Fame banner will hang.

Nathan Chen, the 2019 U.S. and World champion, will be presented the Michelle Kwan Trophy as the winner of SKATING magazine’s 2019 Readers’ Choice Award. The presentation will take place during the Skating Spectacular on Jan. 26. Chen became the first skater since Michelle Kwan (2001–03) to win three consecutive SKATING magazine Readers’ Choice Awards. Each year, figure skating fans are asked to vote for the eligible skater(s) whom they believe is most deserving of the award based on the accomplishments of the past season. A total of 4,259 votes were cast during the weeklong period, which started June 27 and ended July 5. He received 63.8 percent of the vote. Chen continued his worldwide domi-nance, winning every competition he com-peted in during the 2018–19 season. The freshman at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, kicked things off by prevail-ing at Skate America and Internationaux de France. Those victories propelled him to the Grand Prix Final in Vancouver, Can-ada, where he repeated as champion.
From there, Chen secured his third consecutive U.S. title in Detroit. He fin-ished with a record margin of victory — 58.21 points. He cleanly landed four quads, two triple-triple combinations and a triple Axel in his free skate; his overall score of 342.22 included perfect 10s for his perfor-mance and interpretation of music. Chen rolled into spring, repeating as World champion in Saitama, Japan. He fin-ished nearly 23 points ahead of two-time and reigning Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan, who claimed silver. He wrapped up his season by leading Team USA to victory at the World Team Trophy in Japan. “Nathan is a once-in-a-generation skater,” SKATING magazine Editor Troy Schwindt said. “This past season is a tes-tament to his greatness. Not only did he win every event, he did so in dominating fashion. Nathan is also a role model off the ice. Being able to excel at an Ivy League school while maintaining his perch atop the skating world speaks to his character and work ethic.”
The Meryl Davis and Charlie White Global Excellence Award will be presented during the Skating Spec-tacular on the final day of the 2020 TOYOTA U.S. Figure Skating Champi-onships in Greensboro, North Carolina. Michigan natives Davis and White, the first U.S. Olympic ice dance cham-pions, presented the inaugural Global Excellence Award to two-time U.S. ice dance champions Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue at the 2019 U.S. Championships in Detroit. The most-recent inductees into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame, Davis and White will again present the coveted bronze sculpture during a break in the action. The Davis and White Glob-al Excellence Award is presented based upon a formula that includes placements/points at the U.S. Cham-pionships and world ranking points from designated international cham-pionship events. Teams must qualify
for the Grand Prix Final to be considered. The senior dance team with the highest com-bined point total receives the trophy. The original bronze sculpture portrays the starting pose of Davis and White’s free dance at the 2014 Olympic Games. Har-old Linke is the sculptor. The trophy will reside at the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in Colora-do Springs, Colorado. Names will be engraved and added to the wood base each year. A silver pin creat-ed by John Abeita of Skate Art in the like-ness of the trophy will be given to each skater from the couple who earns the trophy.

SCHOLASTIC HONORS TEAM
U.S. Figure Skating is once again honored to name 10 of the brightest and most talented skaters to the 2020 U.S. Figure Skating Scholastic Honors Team. An additional seven athletes received honorable mention. Established in 1996 by U.S. Figure Skating, the Scholastic Honors Team recognizes student-athletes who have excelled in their academic pursuits and community involvement, as well as in the sport of figure skating. This year’s winners join more than 270 former Scholastic Honors Team winners in earning the prestigious scholarship. A committee reviewed more than 120 applications for this year’s awards. Each member of the Scholastic Honors Team receives a $3,000 scholarship, a Scholastic Honors Team jacket, a certificate and $1,000 to donate to the charity of their choice, given by the Denver Foundation.

more than $6 million improving the streetscape in front of the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. Unprecedented media coverage, the support of many sponsors and businesses and, equally important, an experienced group of more than 400 volunteers helped make the prior two championship events highly successful. SportsTravel magazine named the 2015 U.S. Championships “Sports Event of the Year” and “Best Amateur Multi-Sport or Multi-Discipline Event.” “For the fan and athlete, the friendliness of the volunteers [recruited by the Greensboro Sports Foundation] gives them the feeling that someone is going to address my problem, if there is one,” Carrow said. After the 2015 event, Kim Strable of the Greensboro Sports Commission said, “Most of the athletes, coaches, officials and U.S. Figure Skating staff were receptive to how we do things. We like to make eye contact, we like to be friendly, we like to be engaging if they want to be engaged. From what I could see, things were mutual.”

North Carolina is home to NASCAR and some of the best college basketball in the country, and it’s a regular stop on the PGA Tour. State native Hill Carrow, the chair of the Organizing Committee for this week’s 2020 TOYOTA U.S. Figure Skating Championships, has helped to add figure skating to the sports fabric of the Tar Heel State. For the third time in this decade, the U.S. Figure Skating Championships will be showcased at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. The event enjoyed a resounding debut in 2011 when nearly 111,000 people walked through the turnstiles, followed by an equally successful return in 2015. Carrow, who grew up in Kinston, has been at the forefront of the event every step of the way. “The Greensboro community
became enamored with the event and would constantly ask me, ‘When is the figure skating event coming back?’” said Carrow, who is the founder and chief executive officer for Sports & Properties, Inc., a sports tourism company that has brought the U.S. Championships and other major national and international events to North Carolina since 2002. Greensboro became an instant destination favorite for several reasons, Carrow said. First, the Greensboro Coliseum served the needs of the entire event in 2011 and 2015, with a main arena for senior and junior competition, a secondary rink for the lower-level skaters and practices, and a fanfest that provided an interactive experience — all under one roof. The venerable building — it was built in 1959 — underwent $24 million in renovations before the 2015 event. Since the 2015 U.S. Championships, the city of Greensboro has spent

encouraged to form his own company, which would promote sports tourism, build the local sports economy, produce sponsorship events and secure naming rights. Successful U.S. Championships in 2007 and 2010 in Spokane, Washington, a mid-sized sports market like Greensboro, helped Carrow’s cause as U.S. Figure Skating expanded its scope to attract bids from other cities. In February 2009, North Carolina was awarded the championships, a first for the state.
‘UNBELIEVABLE’ Carrow, who maintains his UNC Chapel Hill law degree license, admits he’s become a major fan of figure skating after watching the sport’s best athletes compete over the last decade. “To watch what these athletes can do in person is unbelievable,” he said. “It’s so much different than what you see on TV, and even on the big screen above the arena.” Carrow, who is a lifelong athlete and participates in the U.S. Masters Swimming program, said he marvels over the things that three-time and reigning U.S. champion Nathan Chen can do on the ice. Chen won his second consecutive U.S. novice title in
Greensboro in 2011, at age 11. “Nathan Chen is the best athlete in the world,” Carrow said. “He’s the Tiger Woods of our sport.” When asked which skater he would be if he could be any skater, he quickly replied, “A mash-up of Jason Brown and Paul Wylie — Jason, with his energy and crowd-winning personality, and Paul with his eloquence and highly respected reputation.” With the success of the 2011 and 2015 events, expectations are high for the 2020 U.S. Championships. There’s a new format, with the top junior and senior skaters competing for titles at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. The top novice, intermediate and juvenile skaters will take part in the inaugural U.S. Figure Skating National Team High Performance Camp, which will be held Jan. 26–29 at the Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail, North Carolina. The camp will include more than 180 skaters and won’t be open to the public. “We will be working to top our excellent ratings as a previous host,” Carrow said. “In particular, we will be focused on attracting large and enthusiastic crowds of spectators to support the outstanding U.S. Figure Skating athletes who are among the best figure skaters in the world.”
IN THE BEGINNING Carrow’s efforts to bring championship-level figure skating to Greensboro actually started in 1987 when he secured the Olympic Festival for the Research Triangle (Raleigh-Cary and Durham-Chapel Hill). It took eight years, but Carrow was finally able to land the Olympic Festival, which included 4,000 athletes competing in 34 different sports. Nearly 500,000 spectators turned out for the event, which preceded the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary and the 1988 Olympic Summer Games in Seoul. More than 9,000 volunteers worked the 183 ticketed sessions to make the Olympic Festival one of the most successful sporting events in state history. Figure skating events were held at the Greensboro Coliseum and received rave reviews. “We spent several years after that pursuing U.S. Figure Skating and the U.S. Championships,” Carrow said. “The policy back then had been for the local skating clubs to host the event. Being a small market, the numbers were not there.” Carrow remained dauntless. After successful leadership roles at a major Atlanta Olympic Games sponsor and the U.S. Olympic Committee, he was

The 2021 and 2022 TOYOTA U.S. Figure Skating Championships will take place in San Jose, California; and Nashville, Tennessee, U.S. Figure Skating announced on Oct. 30. “The Bay Area has a strong figure skating tradition and has been a great host in recent years, while Nashville has one of the fastest-growing skating markets in the country, and its energetic downtown venue is ready to welcome us back for the first time in many years,” U.S. Figure Skating President Anne Cammett said. The 2021 U.S. Championships, set for Jan. 11–17, returns to San Jose for the fourth time (1996, 2012, 2018). The 2022 U.S. Championships, scheduled for Jan. 3–9, will serve as the final qualifying event prior to selecting and announcing the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team that will represent Team USA at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. Nashville last hosted the U.S. Championships in 1997. “Both events will have great
community support and will be exciting destinations for competitors, coaches, their families and fans,” Cammett said. In San Jose, the event will take place at the SAP Center at San Jose, with Solar4America at San Jose serving as the official practice venue and host of U.S. Figure Skating’s newly established National High Performance Development Team Camp. Bay Area skating greats such as Brian Boitano, Kristi Yamaguchi, Peggy Fleming, Charlie Tickner, Debi Thomas and Rudy Galindo have served as ambassadors for the event in past years; some of them are expected to be on hand for the event, which will serve as a kickoff to U.S. Figure Skating’s 100-year anniversary celebration. “With two state-of-the-art ice venues in SAP Center and Solar4America Ice, and two great partners in the City of San Jose and the San Jose Sports Authority, we look forward to making the 2021 U.S. Championships another high-
profile national event,” Sharks Sports & Entertainment President John Tortora said. The Bridgestone Arena, which opened just prior to the 1997 U.S. Championships in Nashville, will again serve as the host venue. Nashville is home to Olympic champion Scott Hamilton, who founded the Scott Hamilton Skating Academy in Music City. “From my first days working with the Nashville Predators through the Scott Hamilton Skating Academy, I knew we were going to build something unique and special,” Hamilton said. “I also knew there were no limits to the ways we could benefit the skating community at large. “I always knew we would someday host the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and I’m so excited that it’s happening in 2022 and that we’ll get to send off the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team to Beijing. I couldn’t be more excited for the city of Nashville and also for the skating community, as together we will all witness a U.S. Championships like no other.”
