English & Urdu Text : Khalid IqbalPresentation : Shoaib Sobani

He looked to be an ordinary young man. General impressions about him were of astudious and hardworking guy...the one who follows the parental instructions inletter and spirit. “Return home right away after the college”. He used to come backhome while riding the famous “ZA” (wagon prevalently called Zeenat Aman inthose times). The ambiance and colors of Dow perhaps never enchanted him. Hehad small moustaches quite unlike Hitler and a fast-paced style of conversationwhich made him distinctive.

After graduation Salahuddin proceeded to England. He did his MRCP in the leastpossible time to return to Dow to join as an Assistant Professor in a medical unit.An illustrious carrier awaited him and he never looked back since then. He neverwent after positions… but the positions chased him. AssociateProfessor...Professor...Head of the Department of Medicine...Principal of DowMedical College…Pro-Vice chancellor of Dow University.

A charismatic phenomenon in reality! Time proved that he was not ‘Afsar” byname but a indisputable ‘Afsar” of the highest quality.

The day Dow was declared a University there was a shift of paradigm. Speedyacademic and infrastructural changes had to be put on track on war footings.Salahuddin was a front man of this extremely difficult process.

Salahuddin has generated a mammoth private practice in Karachi. A source of envyand inspiration at the same time. He is a physician to many but to most of hispatients he has become a faith healer with a supernatural touch which woulddiminish their agonies.

Nobody here in Karachi has been spared of the violent activities. Salahuddin alsobecame a victim of terrorism. Allah saved him…he is now in good health. CurrentlySalahuddin Afsar is the Professor of Medicine at the DUHS and is busy designing thecore curriculum.

Thanks Shoaib for another "star" from our batch. This one shines brighter than most. I have known him as a soft spoken and quiet gentleman. Would never have thought he would become the principal of our alma mater, he wasn't the go getter type. But like you said, Afsari followed Afsar, call it "ism-e-ba- mussamma". Congratulations Afsar for all what you did for our alma mater and continue to do so. I wish you all the success. With warm regards, Bashir. What can I say about you my chap!have known you with great affection from a babbling entertaining buddy as a student, to a thoughtful, hard-working, focused and single-minded educational reformer as 'headmaster' of DMC. You are a friend and a half in all your colours. Happiness, peace and determination be always with you.Munir

I have been with Afsar from DJ College and then on to DMC and back to DMC/CHK in this teaching job that we both are doing at present. We have been through good and difficult time together. I still remember his help everytime I called him during my difficult time of the Cardiac Event 15 years back. I always valued his concerns during my illness. He has been extremely helpful to me while he was Principal of DMC. Afsar is a CHUPA-RUSTAM and I have seen him creeping his way up . He has a sweet family , with both son and daughter doing extremely well. It is a real nice feeling to see Afsar CARING AND LOOKING after his mother.I wish you all the more success Afsar.Idrees Adhi

Shoaib,Excellent write up on SalahuddinAfsar. I still remember good old days when we use to have a lot of fun with Salauddin and Mahmood UlHaq. They use to hang out together . Good old days will never come back.We wish him and his family all the best.Tariq Vakani

We are all proud of Salahuddin's achievements. I had the privilege of meeting him in Nov 2009 in Karachi when he kindly invited me, Naheed, Fauzia, Idrees and Shah Zaman to his house. It was a memorable evening. Salahuddin is a visionary and has made enormous contributions (in spite of strong opposition) in reforming the medical education. He is a role model for all of us.Shamim
