BELIEVE: Hope

Welcome

As We Gather What does it mean that love “is always hopeful?” We use the word “hope” regularly. “I hope

I get the job.” “I hope I have the money.” “I hope I have enough to retire.” So, our KEY

QUESTION for today is: How do I deal with the hardships and struggles of life? As we look

closely at the virtue of hope, it is important to understand clearly what faith is. When we

choose to exercise faith, we have no idea of what is coming ahead, but we believe God

knows, and we believe he has the future in His control — no matter what. The KEY VERSE

for today tells us, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the

inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.”

(Hebrews 6:19-20) Therefore, we can say our KEY IDEA together, I can deal with the

hardships of life because of the hope I have in Jesus Christ.

Old Testament Reading Isaiah 40:25–31 25

To whom then will you compare me,

that I should be like him? says the Holy One. 26

Lift up your eyes on high and see:

who created these?

He who brings out their host by number,

calling them all by name,

by the greatness of his might,

and because he is strong in power

not one is missing. 27

Why do you say, O Jacob,

and speak, O Israel,

“My way is hidden from the LORD,

and my right is disregarded by my God”? 28

Have you not known? Have you not heard?

The LORD is the everlasting God,

the Creator of the ends of the earth.

He does not faint or grow weary;

his understanding is unsearchable. 29

He gives power to the faint,

and to him who has no might he increases strength. 30

Even youths shall faint and be weary,

and young men shall fall exhausted; 31

but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength;

they shall mount up with wings like eagles;

they shall run and not be weary;

they shall walk and not faint.

P This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Epistle Hebrews 6:16–20

16For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an

oath is final for confirmation. 17

So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs

of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, 18

so

that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled

for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. 19

We have

this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind

the curtain, 20

where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest

forever after the order of Melchizedek.

P This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel Luke 2:25–35 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the second chapter.

C Glory to You, O Lord.

25

Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was

righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26

And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he

had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27

And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents

brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, 28

he took him up

in his arms and blessed God and said,

29“Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace,

according to your word; 30

for my eyes have seen your salvation

31

that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32

a light for revelation to the Gentiles,

and for glory to your people Israel.”

33

And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. 34

And Simeon

blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and

rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed 35

(and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C Praise to You, O Christ.

Sermon: "BELIEVE: Hope" by Pastor Mark Airey

Sermon Notes:

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Page 13 August 4th, 2019

Nicene Creed C I believe in one God,

the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth

and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the only-begotten Son of God,

begotten of His Father before all worlds,

God of God, Light of Light,

very God of very God,

begotten, not made,

being of one substance with the Father,

by whom all things were made;

who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven

and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary

and was made man;

and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.

He suffered and was buried.

And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures

and ascended into heaven

and sits at the right hand of the Father.

And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,

whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord and giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,

who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,

I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,

and I look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of the Church

SACRAMENT

Communion Confession C In celebrating the Lord's Supper we recognize the Biblical teaching that this is not

merely a representation of Christ, but the real presence of His Body, and His Blood

in the bread and the wine. We also recognize that in the Supper we receive

forgiveness of sins, strength and unity with fellow confessing and communing

Christians.

Preface P The Lord be with you.

C And also with you.

P Lift up your hearts.

C We lift them to the Lord.

P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Prayer of Thanksgiving P Thank You, Father in heaven, for You are good and Your faithfulness endures to all

generations. You were faithful to Abraham and Sarah, giving them a promise and a

purpose. You were faithful to Moses and the Israelites and You set them free from

slavery and gave them a land of promise. You were faithful to the prophets when they

spoke Your Word to stubborn and ungrateful people. In Your steadfast love, You were

faithful in sending Jesus, Your only Son, to make Yourself known to us and to transform

our lives. You are faithful in providing us with Christ’s body and blood to forgive our

sins and to put down our old selves and call for the new self in Christ. For Your

faithfulness, which endures to all generations, we make a joyful noise of thanks and

praise to You, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Page 16 August 4th, 2019

The Words of Our Lord P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had

given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T

body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He

gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T

blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it,

in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He

comes.

C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and

to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your

blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension

into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom

and teach us to pray:

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Page 17 August 4th, 2019

Lord's Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth

as it is in heaven;

give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini P The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C Amen. Please Be Seated
