INTRODUCTION - GATE

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an All India Examinationadministered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institutes of Technology and the Institute of Science, Bangalore, on behalf of National Coordinating Board-GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

GATE is an ONLINE Computer Based Test (CBT) examination which is held in January and February.

Admission to all Post Graduate Programmes with MHRD and other Government Scholarship / Assistantship in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science at Engineering Colleges / Institutes in India are open only to those who qualify throughGATE.

More importantly, GATE precentile score is valid for Doctorate programmes in relevant branches of Science.

GATE qualified candidates in the engineering disciplines are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories.

As a matter of practice, GATE score is used as a tool by PSU’s and GovernmentOrganisations to shortlist candidates for employment purposes.

Government Organisations / PSUs prescribe GATE qualification as a requirement for applying to the post of a Scientist / Engineer. Some such organisations are BPCL, BHEL, IOCL, NTPC, ONGC, HPCL, Power Grid India etc.

ELIGIBILITY - GATE

QUALIFYING DEGREE FOR GATE :

a) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Architecture and those who are in the final year of such programmes.

b) Master’s degree holders in any branch of Science / Mathematics / Statistics / Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final year of such programmes.

c) Candidates in the 2nd year or higher year of the Post B.Sc. Four Year Integrated Master’s Degree programme in Engineering / Technology or in the fourth or higher year of Five year Integrated Master’s degree and Dual Degree Programmes in Engineering / Technology.

d) Candidates with professional qualifications like AMIE, examination (recognised by UPSC / AICTE as equivalent to B.E / B.Tech for purpose of employment) and those who have completed Section A or equivalent of such professional courses.

STRUCTURE OF GATE

1) All candidates of GATE will appear in a single paper of 3 hrs duration consisting of 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks.

Each GATE paper shall have a common General Aptitude (GA) component carrying 15 marks.

STRUCTURE OF GATECandidates qualified in XE or XL papers are required to be interviewed by the admitting institute to assess their suitability for a particular programme.

The choice of the paper is the responsibility of the candidate. However, some guidelinesare suggested below :

a) Candidates are expected to appear in the paper appropriate to the discipline of their qualifying degree. However the candidate is free to choose any paper according to his / her admission plan, keeping in mind the eligibility criteria of the institutions in which they wish to seek admission.

b) Candidates studying in the fourth year of Five year Integrated M.Tech / Dual Degree programmes are treated at par with those in the final year of Four Year B.E / B.Tech. programme and are expected to appear in the paper appropriate to the discipline of their qualifying degree.

c) At present, students in the Integrated Master’s Degree and Dual Degree programmes in Engineering / Technology are eligible to appear in GATE in order to qualify for the postgraduate scholarship in their own institutions only. They are not eligible for admission to a fresh M.E. / M.Tech. programme.

d) The GATE paper will have Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Answer Questions. The questions will be of 1 or 2 marks each. For a 1 mark question, 1/3 marks will be deducted for a wrong answer. For a 2 mark question, 2/3 marks will be deducted for a wrong answer.

There will be no negative marking for a Numerical Answer Question.

GATE SCORE

GATE score card is valid for three years only from the date of announcement of GATE result.

The 2022 ELITE - GATE Question Bank will comprise of Solutions / Answers / Hints of selectedquestions from previous TWENTY EIGHT YEARS GATE PAPERS, 1990 - 2018.

In case of Production & Industrial Engineering the Question Bank will comprise of 1990-1994 &2001 - 2018 PI papers and 1995 - 2000 ME papers since PI was a part of ME.

NOTE : In case of Botany, Zoology in XL group and Biotechnology, there will be only Course Material and no Question Bank for GATE 2022.

The Question Bank will be provided in 6 volumes.

There will be 5 volumes on General Aptitude (GA).

The important point to be noted is that these questions and solutions will help to improveyour basics thoroughly.
