DermapenDermapenPresident’s message
Dear Members, Greetings from Executive Committee of KN IADVL. I am pleased to note that the subsequent edition of DERMAPEN is ready to hit the racks.
KN IADVL is one of the most vibrant state branches of IADVL. In the past and present, it has become the role model for other state branches by launching unique social and academic programs like vitiligo rath and theme based CMEs and Workshops. We continue this tradition in this academic year too by rolling out programs like Sarathi - A soft skill development program for clinic staff and a connect program for family physicians, pediatricians and gynecologists to educate them about basic dermatology conditions which can be treated at their level and to refer such cases when needed to a dermatologist of their locality and also showcase advances made in the field of dermatology particularly cosmetology and dermatosurgery.
Many of our members have brought laurels to KN IADVL through their publications, participation in international conferences and by assuming key positions at National IADVL. I congratulate and wish them good luck to achieve new heights in the future.
I am proud and happy to share that we are hosting DERMACON 2019 in the month of January 2019 which for the first time is getting elevated to international level, truly termed as DERMACON INTERNATIONAL 2019 - Bengaluru. This conference is further expected to change the way conferencing is done in India, akin to the land mark conferences of 2000 and 2009.
I take this opportunity to thank all my EC members, all committees and each and every member of KN IADVL for providing timely inputs and cooperation for the smooth functioning of the association activities.

From the Editor’s desk
It gives me immense pleasure to bring out this edition
of Dermapen with all the activities and achievements of
our KN branch of IADVL.
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce to
you the member friendly initiatives taken up by IADVL
and promoted by our branch. These include the new and
revamped IADVL website, IADVL DermaApp, E goups, E
voting, Digital library and the DVL trust. E-voting is going to
be the only form of voting from 2018, completely replacing
the ballot paper version. I thank the members who have
enrolled themselves in these initiatives and request others
to get enrolled in all these initiatives.
I also take pride in presenting to you the unique
program initiated by IADVL KN; ‘Sarathi’- a soft skill
development program for the clinic staff. In addition to
these programmes, IADVL KN has also actively participated
in various community dermatology activities during the
World AIDS day, Leprosy day and World skin health day.
I thank all the district co-ordinators who have actively
participated in the various activities and provided the
inputs necessary in editing the Dermapen.
I request all members to update us about your individual
achievements and the achievements of other members,
and also the events being held by your department and
sister societies.
Dr Nagesh TS Dr Namitha Chathra
Editor, Dermapen Assistant editor
From the Honorary General Secretary’s deskDear Members,
Continuing with its tradition,
IADVL Karnataka has a flurry of
activities lined up for this year too.
In addition to the regular activities,
a lot of novel initiatives have taken
place this year. A programme for soft skills development for
the staff of IADVL KN members (SARATHI), appointment of
a legal adviser to address the legal issues of the association
and its members are among the unique initiatives for this
year. Also, we are coming up with print versions of both our
journals this year onwards. Creation of an active Practice
management cell to take up practice related issues is also on
the top of the agenda for this year.
IADVL offers a number of grants and awards to
its members both at the central and the state levels.
Unfortunately, IADVL KN members are not utilising these
benefits, mainly because of their lack of interest in applying.
I request the sister society presidents and secretaries to
actively identify and motivate the eligible members from
their respective societies to apply for these benefits.
IADVL also gives generous grants to conduct academic
programs like DERMA BASICS, DERMAADVANCE, SIG
Workshops etc. I request all medical colleges to host any
one of these IADVL activities at least once in two years, in
addition to the regularly conducted CMEs.
From this year onwards, voting in the IADVL elections
is possible only through E voting. I request all members to
enrol as E voters at the earliest, if not done already.
We have created member’s whatsapp groups for
reaching out to all members. I request all members to join
these groups.
I thank the dynamic president of IADVL KN,
Dr BS Chandrashekhar, for his guidance and support in all
our activities. I also thank all the EC members of IADVL
KN, the Editorial teams of DERMAPEN and WEBSITE,
Presidents and Secretaries of Sister Societies and all the
coordinators- district, zonal and state for their constant
support.Long live IADVL
Dr Manjunath R. Honorary Secretary General

Minutes of meetingMinutes of EC meeting held on
17th November The EC meeting of IADVL Karnataka was held on
November 17th 2017, during DERMAZONE South and
CUTICON KN at the VIP lounge of Father Muller Convention
Centre, Mangalore from 7:30 to 8:30 pm.
Dr Arun Inamadar, President, KN IADVL branch welcomed
the gathering and started the meeting. Dr Shashikumar B.
M., Hon. Gen Sec, presented the Secretary’s report, which
was accepted. Dr Manjunath R. presented the treasurer’s
report. Dr Venkatram Mysore suggested that the income
and expenditure of each conference must be mentioned
separately in the report. He also suggested that EC should
try to get IT exemption for IADVL KN on lines of Bangalore
Dermatology Society. Dr Manjunath Shenoy suggested
that when educational grant is received from pharma
companies for three years for a programme, an annual
percent of increase should be there to compensate for the
increase in expenses each year. Dr Umashankar suggested
to have only e-version of DERMAPEN to save on the printing
expenses. Dr Chandrashekar opined to continue the print
versions as advertisements in DERMAPENS can be a source
of income to the association. Dr Venkatram enquired if the
treasurer’s report has been submitted to finance committee,
and opined that financial transactions of more than one lakh
should be referred to the finance committee.
Academy report was presented by Dr Raghunatha
S. The steroid survey has been done in 14 centres, and
the plan is to extend it to all medical colleges. Initially a
pilot report to be published from the available data. The
postgraduate manual is ready for print. Pharma companies
want to print the book and have distribution rights.
Dr Venkatram suggested that it can be given to a publisher
who can give it to pharma companies for distribution,
IADVL KN will receive royalties for that. Dr Chandrashekar
suggested to elevate the PG manual to national level
and then release an e version of the book. Dr Venkatram
suggested a copy can be sent to international societies a
part of the IADVL international outreach programme.
Dr Inamadar suggested to have a cross sectional survey
for diseases like vitiligo and psoriasis, involving all the medical
colleges taking the help of community department.
Two issues of the journal CDR has been released with
one supplement on dermatophytosis which has been
well accepted by dermatologists. Dr Raghunath urged all
members to submit more original articles to the journal so
that it can be indexed at the earliest. The plan is to have
the journal indexed by Copernicus by 2019, as submissions
will increase once indexed.
Dr Ravi Rathod submitted CUTICON 2016 reports which
were accepted. Dr Raghunath Reddy briefed about the
preparations for DERMACON INTERNATIONAL 2019.
Gadag dermatology society bid for CUTICON 2019 and
was accepted by the EC, subject to acceptance by AGBM.
Dr Chandrashekar B S proposed Madikeri as venue
for MIDCUTICON. It was decided to let the EC decide on
a venue. Dr Venkataram insisted this should be strictly for
practitioners and exclude postgraduates.
St. John’s Medical College has requested to permit
them to host DERMAADVANCE 2019, DERMABASICS 2019
will be hosted by Yenepoya Medical College Mangalore,
and 2020 by Basaveshwara Medical college Chitradurga.
As Dr Umashankar has been elected as the Gen Secretary
of national IADVL 2018-20, it was suggested that he remain
as vice president for this term. Dr Satish Pai B is the President
elect, and Dr Shashikumar B M vice president.
Dr Narendra Kamath has suggested to review and
update the SOP which were framed in 2009. A committee
to be formed to do the same.
Dr Venkatram Mysore suggested to have a DERMASEWA
App, which will facilitate communication between
physicians and dermatologists in remote areas where
there is a lacuna for dermatologists. Many members had
queries regarding the same which were answered by Dr
Venkataram and Dr B S Chandrashekar. It was decided by
EC to take up the project on a pilot basis in one place and
then expand to other places depending on the results,
after approval in AGBM..
Dr Manjunath Kollegal suggested to have an IADVL KN
legal, ethical and social media cell to address the ethical
issues in view of the KPME act.
Dr B S Chandrashekar proposed to make some changes
in the existing divisions of zones, as some districts were
not part of the zone, to facilitate easier communications.
Dermapen May 20185
Each district will have a district coordinator who will
coordinate with the respective zonal co-ordinators for
IADVL KN activities. A meeting to be held shortly involving
all the coordinators to discuss the plans.
A proposal was made to have a leprosy training centre
in a central place like Bangalore or Hubballi, where leprosy
patients will receive treament and other measures such as
reconstructive surgeries and help in rehabilitation.
Dr Chandrashekar B S proposed for the association to
pay 50% of DVL trust amount to enroll more members in
it, or make it part of conference registration and also to
appoint an insurance agent to meet the dermatologists
across the state and enroll them in this. Dr Venkatram
Mysore said that the DVL trust as a product was not
attractive and offered small compensation.
Dr Chandrashekar suggested to have a mentorship
programme on lines of national IADVL to guide young
dermatologists. Other proposals were IADVL directory, to

educational grants.
Dr Umashankar opined the permission of GB to be
sought to change the auditor for the next year as it is
expensive. Dr Mysore said the auditor should not be
changed everytime the secretary changes and maintaining
the same auditor helps in keeping all documents safe with
one person. Dr Chandrashekar B S recommended BDS
auditor Mr Pradeep as IADVL KN is planning to apply for
tax exemption under 80 G. The house agreed to authorize
Dr B S Chandrashekar to negotiate with the auditor Mr

points :
= Plan to initiate programme which will run for three
years or more.
= District coordinators to be involved in all activities of
IADVL KN which will help to disseminate information
and carry out the IADVL activities successfully in all
districts.
= DERMA SEWA app- to create an app to fill
the lacunae in few areas where there are no
dermatologists, help connect the primary
care physicians to local dermatologists. Many
members like Dr Purushotham, Dr YM Shivakumar,
Dr Tukaram Sori opposed the app, they felt it
might hinder the practise of local dermatologists
if advice was given to physicians through the app.
a few members felt that physicians might misuse
the app and not refer patients to dermatologists.
It was proposed by Dr Venkatram Mysore to start
the app in one district, as a pilot project if the
dermatologists of the district agree, and then assess.
Dr Umashankar suggested the app can be used to
educate the physicians regarding common conditions
rather than prescribing medicines.
= To have a leprosy rehabilitation centre in Hubli or
Bangalore, for the rehabilitation and treatment of
leprosy patients
= Mentorship programme to help and guide junior
dermatologists
= Psoriasis and vitiligo registry
= To strengthen practice management cell, to make a
list of procedures whuich are applicable for GST so
that it will be uniform in Karnataka
= To motivate more members to avail benefits of DVL
trust, to allocate funds from the association for
enrolling members,
= To get 80 G status for IADVL Karnataka.
The meeting concluded with vote of thanks from
Dr Shashikumar.

Minutes of combined EC and CC meeting of IADVL Karnataka at Hotel Citrine,
Bengaluru on 17/12/2017.The first combined CC-EC meeting after taking over by
the office bearers of 2017-18 was held at Hotel Citrine, Bengaluru on Sunday 17th December 2017 from 9.30 AM to 1.00PM. Eighteen members attended the meeting.

He said that enrolling all IADVL KN members as E voters is essential because from 2018, E voting will be the only form of voting. He also stressed the need for a membership drive because approximately 300 dermatologists across Karnataka are still not enrolled as IADVL members.
Treasurer’s report was presented. Members were informed that IADVL Karnataka’s new bank account is being opened at Kotak Mahindra Bank , Kollegal. DERMAZONE SOUTH 2017, Mangaluru – provisional accounts were presented. It was informed that a total savings of 24 -27 Lakhs was expected after the pending Pharma payments come in.
