About IIFTIndian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) was set up on 2nd of

May, 1963 as an Institution with a focus on foreign trade

related research and training.

Since its inception, the Institute has evolved and undergone

major transformations and has, over the years, broadened

the scope and dimensions of its academic activity that now

encompasses the full spectrum of international business.

Today, the Institute, in its 54th year of existence, is widely

recognized for its knowledge and resource base, with rich

heritage and strong alumni network both in India and

abroad.

The ever evolving character of the foreign trade sector

continuously throws up new opportunities and challenges

which the Institute in its own way attempts to face by

redelineating the contours of its activities.

IIFT postal stamp was released by the then Hon’ble Prime

Minister of India to commemorate the Golden Jubilee Year of IIFT.

The Golden Jubilee Year of IIFT was marked by the inspiring

address of the Hon’ble President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, on IIFT foundation day followed by IIFT stamp release ceremony chaired by then Hon’ble Prime Minister of

India and concluded with convocation which was graced by

the Hon’ble Vice President of India, Md. Hamid Ansari.

Industry related electives under the course curriculum is taught by industry leaders such as Google, Capgemini, and

The ever-changing global and domestic

environments and their interactions with each other have

necessitated a structured understanding of the International

Business Environment for any global manager. The MBA

(International Business) is a foundation course that provides

a professional and structured approach to develop

candidates into competent business executives who can

satisfy the ever-growing requirement for professionals, who

are qualified to function as International Business Managers.

MBA (IB), the flagship programme of IIFT, spans over a period

of two years and is a fully-residential programme. IIFT is

known for its academic rigor with courses laying equal

emphasis on international implications of every concept.

This very aspect of the curriculum at IIFT gives the

participants an edge over other management students

wherein they are sensitized about international issues and

develop into global managers.

New Delhi Campus

Located in Qutab Institutional Area, over-looking green

ridge and historical Qutab Minar, the IIFT Campus is

considered to be one of the finest in the country. The campus

spread over 6.5 acres of land houses two academic blocks

and two residential blocks for students and visiting faculty.

Be it the imposing structure of the ‘atrium`, the mystic beauty

of the sculpture design, bronze statue called “Wings of

Wisdom”, or the splendor of the campus in full bloom in

winter, it never fails to impress the visitors.

This holistic development is achieved through an intricately

designed course structure which keeps evolving year after

year. The courses at IIFT are structured and inter-twined in

such a manner so as to provide the perfect blend of each and

every aspect of the management curriculum. This is further

supplemented by port visits, summer projects, live projects,

a social awareness programme, symposia, cultural events

community service activities, sports and different club

activities, each of which adds to the academic concepts and

provides the candidates the opportunity to apply various

Admission Process

At IIFT, we strive to achieve the same through a rigorous

admission procedure involving an intensive written exam,

group discussion, essay writing and finally an interview.

More than 50000 applicants apply for the entrance exam

and undergo a rigorous selection process at IIFT.

Kolkata Campus:

Located just off the Eastern Metropolitan Highway in the

“City of Joy”, IIFT Kolkata campus is considered to be one of

the finest in the eastern part of the Country. Spread over 7

acres the campus houses academic block, admin block, two

residential blocks for students and visiting faculty. The

campus itself is a very picturesque with artistically designed

buildings and well maintained plush gardens and water

bodies.

MDP Division has emerged as a knowledge resource division catering to the needs of managers and executives at all

levels from the government, Public Sectors and Corporate both in India and abroad. This division has been instrumental in

training more than 49,500 participants. The division offers wide spectrum of MDPs in different areas of international business

touch with recent corporate requirements for Business Development which are shared with the students.

Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), ITPO, KVIC etc.

• In-Service/Mid-Career Training Programmes for Central Civil Services: Conducting various programmes for serving All

India Service officers like IAS, IPS, ITS etc.

• Training Programmes for Probationers/officer trainees of various Central Civil Services: Conducting full

time/attachment programmes for probationers/officer trainees of various central civil services like Indian Foreign

Service, Indian Trade Service, Indian Revenue Service, Indian Economic Service etc. on regular basis for past many years.

• Human Resource Development Programmes of States: Various programmes are conducted for capacity development of

ITI Principals/Employment Exchange officers un-der Ministry of Labour & Employment. Similarly, some programmes

have been conducted for the faculty of agricultural universities of states.

African Countries, Govt. of Nepal etc.

IIFT has leveraged technology to offer hybrid programmes & online programmes in order to reach out to participants all across

India.

The Niryat Bandhu Scheme was announced as part of Foreign Trade Policy 2009-14 on 13th October, 2011 to focus on mentoring

the first generation entrepreneurs in the field of international trade.

The major components of the Scheme are us under:

• Preparation and development of material for use of new IEC holders and its printing• Training of new entrepreneurs (IEC holders) every month in each RA• Training/meetings/seminars at towns of export Excellence on specific topic

• Seminars at industry associations, universities, management schools, etc.

• Capacity Building of ITS/DGFT officers• Development of Business Excellence Support Team (DGFT - BEST)

Research has always been a strong focus at IIFT. Research holds great significance in the growth of the institute asit provides a

strong pervasive interface between creation of knowledge and training.

Research activities are undertaken both as part of in-house research programmes and at the instance of client institutions, which

includes Central and State Governments, PSUs and International Organizations like World Bank, FAO, International Trade Centre,

UNCTAD,WTO, UNIDO, UNESCAP and Ministry of Commerce & Industry.

Moreover, it has developed substantial consulting competence in addressing issues in International Business and building Corporate Strategies.

The institute till date carried out more than 700 research studies and awarded 7 doctoral degrees to its successful research students.

Prestigious institutions, national and global organizations have been regularly consulting IIFT on matters pertaining to

International Business.

These organizations include FICCI, RBI, CII, FIEO, CID, QCI-Harvard University, European Union, USAID, UNDP, ESCAP, Commonwealth Secretariat, German Development Institute, IFC-World Bank.

Centre for International Trade in Technology (CITT)

Centre for WTO Studies

Set up in 2001 with financial and technical support from DSIR

and Government of India, CITT’s foremost purpose is to

actualize India’s potential in technology trade and address

the intricacies involved.

The activities of the Centre are designed to sensitize

policymakers and industry on technology and trade

interface issues and opportunities. The Centre is focused on

activities related to policy research and capacity building for

relevant technology identification, investments and

assimilation by trade stakeholders in India.

The focus of Centre for International Trade in Technology is

to:

1. Sensitize Government about the importance of

technology exports and the need for enabling a proactive

regime.

2. Provide support to the corporate sector by providing

access torelevant global commercial intelligence of priority

markets.

3. Contribute towards capacity building in the domain of

innovation led commerce.

The Centre for WTO Studies was set up with the support of

the Department of Commerce, Government of India, in the

year 1999. The Centre was established at IIFT in November

2002.

The activities undertaken by the Centre for WTO Studies seek

to achieve three broad objectives:

(i) To assist India’s trade negotiators and policy makers

in participating effectively in the WTO and at the

related multilateral trade negotiations;

(ii) To enhance the understanding of key trade issues

among stakeholders through outreach and

dissemination activities; and

(iii) To develop capacities within India and in other

developing countries for analyzing WTO and other

trade-related issues through training programmes.

In its various activities the Centre has collaborated with inter-

governmental organizations including the WTO, UNCTAD,

UNESCAP, South Centre, Commonwealth Secretariat etc.

THE MSME CENTRE

AACSB Accreditation

Keeping in view that the MSME sector would continue to

play a crucial role in our globalizing economy towards

national development, the institute had setup the MSME

centre for almost a decade now in order to provide

continuous support to this sector by conducting Training

Programs, provision of Business Intelligence services

through comprehensive information hub and acting as a

catalyst for interfacing with other concerned and associated

institutions and organizations.

The MSME Centre had worked very closely with Himachal

Government to establish Regional Centre for MSME Studies

at Shimla to enhance export competitiveness of the State.

One of the recent initiatives of the Center is establishment of

Incubation cell in the name of KITTES: Knowledge for

Innovation in Trade and Technology for Entrepreneurial

Startups.

KITTES aims at creating export startups through its Export

Advisory Pro-gram, up gradation of trade support services,

access to finance, networking; market information service

and market linkages targeting IIFT Alumnus, corporate and

MSME units helping them to take a leap into international

markets.

Indian Institute Of Foreign Trade is in the process of

achieving the acclaimed AACSB International

(Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business)

Accreditation.

AACSB is a non profit membership organization of

educational institutions, businesses, and other entities

devoted to the advancement of management education.

IIFT has been its member for two years and its eligibility

application to enter the AACSB Accreditation process has

been approved.

Currently, IIFT is developing the Initial Self Evaluation Report

(ISER) under the mentorship of Dr. BM. Purwanto, Vice Dean,

Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah

Mada.

The International Collaborations & Capacity Development (ICCD) Division of IIFT plays an important role in the Institute through

various activities

? Establishing academic ties with domestic and international-al universities / institutions to enable student exchange,

faculty exchange and/or joint training and research pro-grams.

? Conducting customized programmes for international students and executives.

? Hosting interactive information sessions for visiting delegations of students, academicians and policy makers from

different countries.

? Obtaining and leveraging membership of renowned domestic and international organizations to strengthen academic

standards and collaborations.

? Facilitating participation of faculty in National and Inter-national training programmes and conferences.

IIFT Student Exchange Programme is an outcome of the Institute’s academic collaboration with some of the leading institutions

across the world. Every year around 30 students from IIFT go to study in designated universities abroad and around same number

of foreign students come to IIFT for one or two trimester. The programme helps the participant gain international exposure in a

multi-cultural setting. Upon completion of the programme the participants gain from multi cultural peer group interactions as

well as exposure to world class and renowned international faculty and from the unique and rigorous pedagogy of the concerned

institution.

IIFT also conducts customized programmes in the area of “Doing Business in India” for various international Universities, as well as

corporate executives. IIFT has already conducted programmes for Universities in Germany, Netherlands and New Zealand.

The Africa Initiative

• Indian Institute of Foreign Trade has an illustrious legacy as a Centre of Excellence in terms of imparting training and

conducting research regarding business across the globe.

• In this regard, Africa features as an area of specific focus and importance given the massive potential of the continent due to

the availability of growing markets and seemingly boundless resources.

• International Projects Division (IPD) has been conceived to be a dedicated body for conducting academic and research

oriented activities with a special focus on Africa. Its primary objectives are as follows:

1. Conduct Capacity Development Programmes on International Business for African countries

2. Establish the India Africa Institute of Foreign Trade (IAIFT) in Kampala, Uganda for African countries

3. Conduct off-campus programmes internationally

4. Conduct Study Tours for African Companies to India and Indian companies to Africa

• Institute of Finance Management, Tanzania was established in 1972 to offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses for

research and consultancy services in Finance and related subjects.

• IIFT’s MBA(International Business) programme started out in the year 2000 in collaboration with Institute of Finance

Management (IFM), Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.

• It commenced so as to train and produce professionals to help facilitate Tanzania’s emergence in international markets.

• Over time, the MBA(IB) program offered by IIFT from the IFM campus in Dar-es-Salaam, has evolved beyond Tanzania and

now is the most sought after program in the field of management across Africa. The program has enabled IIFT and India to be

an active partner in Africa’s growth story of the past decade.

• The International Trade Conclave, 2016 was hosted by IIFT on 24th September, 2016 in Dubai.

It was inaugurated by Anurag Bhushan, Consul-General of India in Dubai.

• Ajay Mathur, CEO of ETA commodities and head of the Dubai Chapter of IIFT was one of the chief guests at the event.

• The topic of the conclave was “India-Gulf strategic partnership in trade and investment: Challenges and future roadmap”. Dr.

Jaydeep Mukherjee, who was the faculty coordinator for the conclave talked about aggressive investments by India in GCC

countries.

• The conclave witnessed participation from industry leaders in trade sector and illustrious alumni of IIFT based in Dubai and

UAE.

• The event served as a platform for leadership across domains for eminent leaders to share their business acumen and

valuable opinions on select themes with the future leaders of the industry, the

IIFT hosted The International Trade Conclave, 2016 on 24th September, 2016 Dubai.

5th EIITF Conference

5th EIITF- Empirical Issues in International Trade & Finance was hosted at Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Kolkata campus

during 16th- 17th December 2016.

The conference was inaugurated by Mr. A.K. Bhalla, IAS (1986 batch); Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT); Director,

Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Dr. R M Joshi, Professor and Chairperson, International Projects Division with IIFT, Dr. Vijaya Katti,

Professor at IIFT, Dr. K Rangarajan, Center head at IIFT Kolkata Head- Centre for MSME Studies; and many other noted dignitaries.

“International Trade at Transaction Level and Effects of Global Recession” was chosen as the theme of 5th EIITF Conference

which was discussed through 4 different sub themes throughout 2 days of conference namely Transactional level analysis of

International Trade, Global recession and Finance, Trade Facilitation, Functional level analysis.

The conference also witnessed 3 policy forums based on namely “EASE OF DOING BUSINESS- CUSTOMS, PORTS & LOGISTICS

INFRASTRUCTURE”, “INVESTMENT RULES AND POLICY IN THE ASIA- PACIFIC REGION: CURRENT ISSUES, INDIA’S EMERGING

LEADERSHIP, AND FUTURE PROSPECTS” & “IMPACT OF BREXIT IN INDIA”.

A total of 58Technical papers were presented in 16 Technical Sessions in 2 days of Conference. The papers were presented by

Quo Vadis- The Management and Cultural Fest of IIFT Quo Vadis saw a footfall of 5000+ over three days from B-schools and undergraduate colleges across the nation. The theme for Quo Vadis 2017 was ‘Youth Empowerment’. This year the college hosted renowned Bollywood playback singer, Mohit Chauhan, Rock Band, Sifar and stand-up comedian Biswa Kalyan Rath across three scintillating nights. In the 3 days span, IIFT saw 12 cultural and 7 management events. Taking this spirit of fervor further, we hosted “Hip Hop International regionals” seeing some of India’s best dance crews fight it out to win over the audience and a ticket to the World Championships USA.

TEDx IIFT DelhiTED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a global community that encourages people from every discipline and culture to engage with ideas and each other, both online and at TED and TEDx events around the world, all year long. With the hope of capturing the essence of TED - that of sparking connections and kindling deep conversations through the vibrant mixture of online and live content, we continued our success of TEDx 2015, at IIFT Delhi on October 22, 2016 with the theme of 'Ignite'. The speakers this year were Manu Kumar Jain, Sanjay Sethi, Shweta Tripathi, Anand Sinha, Dr. Anurupa Roy, Arunachalam Muruganantham, Sreemoyee Piu Kundu, Sahil Vaidya and Chirag Gander .

UWLUltimate Warriors League or UWL is the event every IIFTian eagerly waits for. The week-long event lights up the campus to its charming best. Over 100 players went under the hammer to form 4 squads namely, Eastern Gladiators, Southern Stallions, Mumbai Mafia and Aryan Juggernauts. The campus saw some fierce Marketing campaigns by all the teams to gather maximum support. Southern Stallions emerged victorious after a hard-fought week with Eastern Gladiators emerging as First Runners-Up.

Mock, Stalk, Quarrel – The Book Launch Event by Literary CellThe book launch of Mock, Stalk, Quarrel, a literally gem contributed to by multiple prodigious authors who descended on our campus to unveil their collaborative effort. The students of IIFT got to showcase their creative chops by participating in the writing competition set forth for them by the authors. The winners were then felicitated during the book launch which saw witty conversation between the students and the authors with a healthy spattering of laughter and fun. It was an event that brought the literary world to our doorsteps and provided chance to connoisseurs of books here to interact with the veterans and learn through this exposure.

Dr. Deepankar Sinha

Dr. Deepankar Sinha, Associate Professor, is a Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, and M.Sc. Dr. Biswajit Nag

Dr. Nag, an Associate Professor at IIFT, has been with IIFT for the past 18 years and has a wide range of publications in the areas of International trade and Industrial Economics. He has worked in consulting assignments with esteemed organizations like UN-ESCAP, ADB, EU, DFID and others. He has done extensive research on Trade Policy & Development including WTO, Private Sector Development, International Production Network, Trade Facilitation, and International Business including Strategy issues. Currently, he is working on Global Value Chain and Trade & Technology interface. Dr. Nag has authored the book "My World with Rafiki: An Economic Travelogue and Miscellany”. The book reflects the author's own way of detailing the importance of culture, history, business practices and role of economic policies as part of his teaching at IIFT and other places. It is full of anecdotal evidences and analysis related to international business.

Dr. Basanta K. Sahu

Dr. Basanta Sahu has about 20 years of academic experiences and currently he teaches Economics at Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi. He was a visiting Chair Professor (Economics) at Tel Aviv University (2012-13) and previously worked with reputed institutes including Indian Institute of Management (Lucknow), Sambalpur University; Institute of Economic Growth, NIPFP and NABARD. He is a Sr. Fellow (Honorarly) at Indtitute of Social Science. His major reseach areas cover agriculture, household risk coping, water, drought, food insecurity, gender, microfinance and, development issues and trade & development. Some of his major research projects are funded by the World Bank, ADB, IRRI, ICSSR, Planning Commission, Govt. of India. He has more than 40 research publications and actively participated in major policy debates and analysis at national and international level. International Academy of Social Sciences (USA) has honored him ‘Academician of Social Sciences’ (the highest award of IASS) in 2014. He is also reciepent of ‘Varat Vikas Award’ in 2016.
