Jaisalmer: As the na-tion hailed the air pow-er on the 88th IAF Day on Thursday, a fighter plane from the 1971 war kept lying unattended in a corner of the local government museum in want of maintenance.

The Indian Air Force had destroyed 36 Paki-stani tanks using the Hunter Marut fighter aircraft at Longewala during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. The air force had

around 15 years ago gift-ed the plane to the dis-trict administration that placed it at the famous

Hanuman Chauraha for public display but later shifted to a corner of the museum, where visitors

rarely reach. Contribu-tion of the fighter jet in the Longewala battle can be recalled through the scenes of Border movie, which was based on the battle. The fighter jet destroyed the Paki-stani tanks with the break of dawn.

The condition of the war hero plane is getting poorer in the absence of proper maintenance and the possibility of its parts being stolen cannot be ruled out. Col (retd) Bhoj Raj Singh, district

sainik welfare officer, said the war piece and its surrounding area in shambles. “It should be maintained and cared for as a heritage piece. I shall apprise Sainik board chairman of this and ask for some way out to give it a heritage look,” Singh said.During the 1971 Indo-Pakistani war, Pakistani Army came with 59 tanks at night and was confront-ed by Lance Naik Bhai-ron Singh of BSF at the Longewala post.

ith the COV-ID-19 pandemic r e i n f o r c i n g concerns about economic ine-

quality, left-behind com-munities, discrimination, and climate change, there is increasing pressure on corporations to do more than sell a good widget at an affordable price. Re-sponding to the changing public mood, the US Busi-ness Roundtable declared last year that, “Each of our stakeholders is essen-tial. We commit to deliver value to all of them, for the future success of our companies, our communi-ties, and our country.”

But this way of framing the issue is unhelpful. A corporation’s stated ob-jectives should help guide its choices. If all stake-holders are essential, then none are. In an at-tempt to please everyone,

the Business Roundtable will probably end up pleasing no one. Recent evidence even suggests that the corporations that signed on to the group’s “stakeholder capitalism” statement have been more likely to lay off workers in response to the pan-demic, and less likely to donate to relief efforts.

Nevertheless, is the shareholder-centric view propounded by Nobel lau-reate economist Milton Friedman wrong? Fried-man’s rationale was that because managers are em-ployed by shareholders, their duty is to maximize profits – and thus the share price – over time. While this approach was widely embraced by cor-porate executives in the United States and the United Kingdom over the past 50 years, its basic logic was misunderstood.

To many observers, the idea that businesses should favor millionaire investors at the expense of long-term workers is appalling.2

Yet there is a deeper ar-gument for Friedman’s view, based on the recog-nition that managers will not necessarily squeeze everyone else to favor shareholders. Because shareholders get whatev-

er is left over after debt holders are paid their in-terest and workers their wages, management can maximize shareholders’ “residual claim” only if it expands the size of the corporate pie relative to these prior fixed claims on it. To the extent that management must satisfy everyone else before look-ing to shareholder inter-ests, it already does maxi-

mize value for all those who contribute to the firm.

True, some would coun-ter that the imperative to boost quarterly profits leads to cost cutting in ar-eas like worker training. But if companies want to maximize their shares’ value over the long term, they will train workers where needed, encourage sustainable practices from their suppliers when it reduces costs, and fos-ter lasting relationships with customers instead of ripping them off. Put an-other way, even if CEOs do focus primarily on share prices, that doesn’t mean the stock market only rewards actions that boost this quarter’s earn-ings. Amazon showed lit-tle profit for years, but is thriving now precisely because it invested so much in its business.1

Moreover, when quar-terly results do affect share prices, it is often because the short term has been interpreted as a credible reflection of the long term. By the same token, instead of trying to boost short-term profits by sacrificing the long term, corporate managers would do better to explain their strategy and encour-age investor patience. And if market analysts do not buy their argument, perhaps they have a point, and new management may be in order. It is up to good corporate boards to decide, without being swayed by meaningless short-term results. They can certainly encourage managers to take a longer-term view. Vacuous state-ments about serving all stakeholders need never be issued.

RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH UNDER SC SCRUTINY

entre’s undeclared protection to some of its favourite channels dishing out fake news and irresponsible reporting of some events has invited the Supreme Court’s annoyance. The manner in

which some news channels spread hatred with their fake stories about Muslims being super spreaders of Covid-19 after the Tablighi Jamaat incident in Delhi and the Centre’s response has not gone down well with the apex court.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India SA Bobde, Justice AS Bopanna and Justice V. Ramasu-bramanian upbraided the Centre for its affidavit denying any instance of “bad reporting” with regard to the communalization of Tablighi Jamaat which held a congregation at its Nizamuddin markaz in Delhi in March. The mosque had become a Covid hotspot and members of the Tabligh were hounded all over the country. Some news channels persistent-ly telecast anti-Muslim propaganda which led to the detention of foreigners who had been allowed valid visas to participate in the congregation while the government winked at the channels’ fake content.

A similar stand was taken by the Centre when a pro-BJP channel began airing its malicious “UPSC Jihad” programme against Muslims qualifying the civil services. The programme was put on hold after the matter was brought to the Supreme Court’s attention.

In the Tablighi case, the Chief Justice warned the Centre against treating the court lightly for its “brazen and evasive” reply. “How can you say there is no instance of bad reporting in the petition,” the Bench asked as it pointed out that freedom of speech was “one of the most abused right”.

BENGAL KEEPS UP ITS TRADITION OF VIOLENCE

ith elections approaching, West Bengal is witnessing a return to its politics of agitation and violence. Earlier, the pro-tests were by the CPI-M against the Con-gress, then Trinamool Congress (TMC)

and Congress against the CPI-M and now it is the TMC which is bearing the brunt of agitation poli-tics mainly by the BJP but also the CPI-M and the Congress. Mamata Banerjee drove out Tata’s small car project from Singur alleging an unfair deal to farmers whose land was acquired for the project.

On Thursday, the BJP planned a march to the state secretariat, more to demonstrate its strength than to protest against the deteriorating law and order, inept handling of the pandemic, and other issues. As more such protests are planned, the Mamata government has closed down the secre-tariat for two days for sanitization.

With the newly appointed BJP Yuva Morcha pres-ident Tejasvi Surya present at the protest venue along with senior party leaders Kailash Vijayvargiya and Mukul Roy, the protesters allegedly hurled bricks and bombs at the police who lobbed teargas shells and used water cannon to disperse the mob. The clash left several injured. The BJP is unlikely to release the pressure on the TMC government and more such protests are likely in the future. They have been pro-testing ever since losing out to Mamata in the assem-bly election. In 2017 also they had turned Kolkata into a war zone and the violence had leftover 70 injured. The idea is to grab eyeballs and headlines for a sus-tained impact before West Bengal goes to the polls.

W

he societal expectations and traditional gender roles play a big part in why men do not talk about their mental health. This factor is a dam-aging stigma around mental health problems in men.

The notion of ‘manliness’ and the burden of toxic masculinity, where a man is supposed to be tough and in control, for that reason asking for help or reach-ing out when faced with emo-tional difficulties can mean it is seen as a weakness. If men feel pressure to appear strong, this can stop them from opening up about their mental health issues. This can both cause and aggra-vate mental health problems.

Masculinity norms can govern the way men seek help. They can govern the kinds of disclosures men make when they are feeling distressed or they are exposed to stressful events. – there are described as the rules of mas-culinity and may include spe-cific ways men are told they should act – you know, be tough, stay in control, be a provider, etc. When men ad-here rigidly to the kinds of norms that encourage them to not share their emotions, to be sort of relentlessly self-reliant without seeking the help or support of others, they can have poorer mental health outcomes, particular-ly more depressive symptom-atology because doing so cuts them off I think from the so-cial networks and social sup-ports that might help them get through a difficult time.

Hence, males who endorse more traditional norms (such as self-reliance i.e. prefer to solve problems themselves and not to ask others for help and the im-portance of emotional control) maybe less willing to discuss their health concerns. In rela-tion to mental health, it may be the case that men with mental health problems experience considerable shame and stigma and thus feel like they are not able to openly discuss their

problems with mental health care professionals.

However, this does not mean that men are invulner-able to mental illnesses. De-pression, anxiety, eating dis-orders, stress, and low self-esteem, as well as conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, are all expe-rienced by men too and are significantly more at risk of attempting suicide than women. Men and women can develop most of the same mental disorders and condi-tions but may experience dif-ferent symptoms. Some symptoms include:

z Anger, irritability, or aggressivenessz Visible changes in mood, energy level, or appetitez Increased or reduced sleep patternsz Issues with concentration or feeling restlessz Increased levels of worry or stressz Misuse of alcohol and/or drugsz Prolonged periods of sadness or hopelessnessz Suicidal thoughtsz Engaging in high-risk activitiesz Aches, headaches, digestive problems without a clear medical causez Impairment in social, occupational, and other important areas of functioning.

The offensive image of a man being a “sissy” or “femi-

nine” if they are emotional or talk about their feelings can be seriously devastating and further discourages many men from expressing themselves emotionally due to their fear of being judged. Suppressing emotions and masking distress, are often start early in life and have been linked to less willing-ness by boys and men to seek help which results in more risk-taking and aggression — possibly harming them-selves and those with whom they interact.

The pressure of being over-ambitious for a man and danger-ously affect their mental health to the point where stress leads to a number of mental issues such as anxiety and depression.

The stereotypes that men should struggle for ultimate financial victory and work around-the-clock to get it is completely bru-tal for their well-being and re-grettably, high rates of mental health issues come from middle-aged working men, who have been overworked for most of their lives.

There are a number of so-lutions to challenge and shat-ter the beliefs of toxic mascu-linity factor in to break men-tal health stigmas for men. Firstly, the obstacle that is created for venting emotion-al needs to be smashed straightaway. The best way to do this is to become the change-maker by expressing yourself and how you feel in your friend groups and cir-cles. Crying should never be assigned to a gender, that is an outstandingly false no-tion. We must also bring vul-nerability, as a basic princi-ple of emotional strength, into the structure of mascu-linity. In fact, it is progressive for men to see each other’s resilience, as it will sanction them to relieve stress and negative feelings, rather than accumulating them up. It is also crucial to motivate them to share their feelings and emotions with you, and when they do, provide the moral support that they need in-stead of patronizing them.

Hathras: The accused in the Hathras incident have written to the Su-perintendent of Police alleging they have been framed in the case and have urged for an inves-tigation for justice to be delivered in the matter. The letter, written on October 7, in Hindi, states that the four ac-cused had been framed on the basis of “false claims” of indulging in sexual acts and then manhandling the girl, leading to her death.

Sandeep, an accused, further stated that he was friends with the vic-tim, and the two also used to talk with the girl over the phone. “On the day of the incident I met her in the fields, she was accompanied by her mother and brother. Upon her telling me I re-turned to my house and started giving water to the animals along with my father. Later on, I got to know from the villag-ers that her mother and brother have beaten her up due to her friendship with me, due to which

she received serious in-juries,” the letter read.

Big industrial push:.. for investment. He also stressed on the devel-opment of facilities in backward areas. “Pos-sibilities of developing a separate industrial area for the migrant Rajasthanis should be explored so that the mi-grants whose indus-tries are affected dur-ing this period of Coro-na pandemic, can be re-lieved. Migrant Ra-jasthanis have an un-breakable relationship with the state. In such a situation, it is the re-sponsibility of the state government to understand their prob-lems and try to over-come them,” Gehlot stressed.

The Chief Minister said that a new MSME Act has been intro-duced in the state to fa-cilitate entrepreneurs

and make the way for investment easier. “In this, entrepreneurs do not need any approval for 3 years and this has made it easier to start an enterprise. In the new industrial policy, many types of dis-counts have been given to entrepreneurs so that investment can be increased in the state. Along with improve-ment in One Stop Shop Scheme, Single Win-dow Act, other steps and policies taken by the state government will make the road of investment easy in the state, the economy will gain momentum and at the same time youth will get employment, he said.

Meanwhile, Indus-tries Minister Parsadi Lal Meena said that the development of 23 new industrial areas is

a major achievement of the state govern-ment. He said that in 2019-20, a revenue of Rs 1400 crore has been earned by RIICO from the sale of more than 1200 plots. “Entrepre-neurs are showing in-terest in buying plots of RIICO industrial ar-eas even in this phase of Corona pandemic. e-auction system im-plemented by the pre-sent government has brought transparency and has made the en-trepreneurs quite com-fortable.,” he said.

Chairman of RIICO, Kuldeep Ranka said that a policy frame-work has been pre-pared to provide a con-ducive investment cli-mate to small and me-dium entrepreneurs in the state. “At present, there are 349 industri-al areas, with the addi-

tion of 23 new indus-trial areas, their num-ber will now become 372. New industrial clusters are being de-veloped according to DMIC and Gas Grid,” he said.

MPs, MLAs and oth-er people’s representa-tives were also present during the foundation stone laying ceremony, through VC.

Freedom of... The court also sought affidavit from a secre-tary-level officer with details of steps taken in past to stop moti-vated media reporting in such cases.

Senior advocate Du-shyant Dave, appear-ing for the Jamaat, told the court that the Centre in its affidavit has stated petitioners were trying to muzzle freedom of speech and

expression.“Freedom of speech

and expression is the most abused right in recent times,” the bench, also compris-ing Justices A S Bo-panna and V Ramasu-bramanian, said.

“They are free to make any averment in their affidavit, like you are free to make any argument you want,” it added.

The petitions will be taken up after two weeks.

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind had moved the apex court on April 6 seeking directions to prevent what it claimed was the com-munalisation of the Nizamuddin Markaz issue by certain sec-tions of the print and electronic media.

The Centre had filed its affidavit in

the matter on August 7, stating that the spread of Covid-19 among attendees of the Jamaat, attacks on health workers by some sections, etc, were all matters of fact and that “news reports based on facts… cannot be cen-sored”.

It also said that the plea raised grievances against “certain sec-tion of media” with-out naming any and “certain news re-ports” without pro-ducing these reports. Instead, it “merely re-lied upon ‘certain fact check news reports’ to contend that entire media is perpetrating communal disharmo-ny and hatred towards Muslims, and is there-fore required to be censured/gagged”, the government said.

AMIT SHAH SHARES PM MODI’S 3 ‘MANTRAS’ FOR COVID CAUTIONNew Delhi: As Cov-id-19 tally went past the 68 lakh-mark in the country, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday shared Prime Minister Naren-dra Modi’s three ‘man-tras’ for precaution and safety.

Taking to Twitter to share his thoughts, the Minister urged people to “wear a mask, keep two yards distance and wash hands frequently” as ad-vised by the Prime Min-ister earlier in the day.

Terming Modi’s call as a safety ‘mantra’, Shah stressed the need to follow the Covid mes-sage delivered by him at a time when India’s Covid-19 tally has reached 68,35,655 and 1,05,526 fatalities have occurred on Thursday with a fresh spike of 78,524 cases in the last 24 hours.

“Only three mantras for safety against Co-rona: wear a mask, keep a two-yard dis-tance and wash hands frequently. My appeal to all is to consider this call of @narendramodi

ji as a safety mantra to not only protect your-self but also your fam-ily, friends and col-leagues,” Shah tweeted in Hindi.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister emphasised on people driven to fight against Covid-19, and appealed to people to unite to

fight the disease. “Let us Unite to fight Co-rona! Let us always remember: Wear a mask, wash hands, fol-low social distancing, practice ‘Do Gaj Ki Doori’. Together, we will succeed and to-gether, we will win against COVID-19,” Modi tweeted. —Agencies

Kulbhushan case:India slams Pak New Delhi: India on Thursday once again hit out at Pakistan for failing to provide unim-peded, unconditional access to Kulbhushan Jadhav saying that Pa-kistan has failed to ad-dress the core issues in the case.

Earlier, Pakistan re-jected India’s demand that an Indian lawyer or a Queen’s counsel be ap-pointed for Jadhav to ensure a free and fair trial, whereas the Inter-national Court of Jus-tice (ICJ) had in July 2019 ruled that Pakistan must undertake an “ef-fective review and re-consideration” in the Jadhav case and also grant consular access to India Ministry of Ex-ternal Affairs spokes-

person Anurag Shrivas-tava in his weekly me-dia briefing today said “Pakistan has failed to respond on the core is-sues pertaining to the (Kulbhushan Jadhav) case. The core issues are the provision of all documents related to this case and providing unimpeded, uncondi-tional and unhindered counselor access to Kulbhushan Jadhav”

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson further added “These issues have to be ad-dressed if we have to have an effective review & reconsideration, as ordered by the Interna-tional Court of Justice. Pakistan must show its intention to deliver on these issues”. —ANI

New Delhi/Jaipur: The Supreme Court, while refusing to inter-fere with a plea to ex-tend the dates for Jaipur, Jodhpur and Kota municipal corpo-ration elections, on Thursday directed the Rajasthan Election Commission to notify the election programme within one week.

The state govern-ment’s plea (SLP) chal-lenging the Rajasthan High Court’s decision to hold the elections to the newly created six municipal corpora-tions of Jaipur, Jodh-pur and Kota by 31 Oc-tober, was heard in the Supreme Court on

Thursday. The Supreme Court

while refusing to stay the High Court verdict also refused to postpone the election dates.

A bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar asked the Rajasthan government to file an application for extend-ing the date of munici-pal polls.

The state govern-ment had moved the apex court challenging the Rajasthan High Court order dismissing its application for ex-tending the poll dates from October 31, 2020, to March 20, 2021, for Jaipur, Jodhpur and Kota municipal corpo-rations.

During the hearing,

the bench observed that it will not interfere with the High Court order but asked the govern-ment to approach the High Court and con-vince it.

“No further indul-gence is required from this court. Go and con-vince the High Court to give you further time. First, notify the elec-

tion and then go to the High Court. Explain to the High Court why the election in October is not possible,” the bench noted.

The top court also took into the submis-sion of the State Elec-tion Commission that it is already in the pro-cess of conducting the Panchayat elections.

Recently, the High Court while rejecting the application moved by the state government had directed that the elections should be completed by October 31.

The civil polls in the three municipal corpo-rations were due in No-vember 2019 but were first postponed for de-limitation of wards, following the govern-ment decision to bifur-cate the corporations in the three and then again due to the COV-ID-19 pandemic.

The government had then assured the court that the elections would be held within six months.

TAREEKH PE TAREEKH! Rajasthan High Court has extended the time of Corpo-ration elections thrice till now. HC had issued an order on March 18 and postponed the polls for the next six weeks from April 17. After that on April 28 this period was once again extended to 31 August. The High Court had once again extended the date of elections on July 31 for the third time on the application of the state government till October 31. The civil polls in the three municipal corporations were due in November 2019, but were first postponed for delimitation of wards, and then again due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jaipur: After Supreme Court refused to give re-lief to the state govern-ment on municipal elec-tions, Chief Whip Ma-hesh Joshi said that the government and party are prepared for the elec-tions and appropriate ac-tion will be taken after examining the order. He said that we were expect-ing apex court will give relief to the state govern-ment. He said that when a candidate contests mu-nicipal elections, his team plays an important role. Talking to reporters

at PCC, Joshi said ensur-ing social distancing in urban areas will be a challenge during the elections. Three cities—Jaipur, Kota and Jodh-pur—where the local bodies elections are to be held have high number of corona positive cases and government is con-cerned about the spread.

ODD ONE OUT! IAS OFFICER ARTIKA SHUKLA FAILS TO GET A CONFIRMATION

Jaipur: It is first of its kind matter in state’s IAS history when a new IAS has not been given confirmation in service.

The current matter pertains to 2016 batch officer Artika Shukla and even though the Un-ion Government has is-sued confirmation for all remaining 109 IAS officials of 2016 batch, only Shukla has been left out which means 8 out of 9 IAS candidates from Rajasthan have been confirmed.

The remaining eight individuals are—Tina

Dabi, A Shafi Khan, JS Sandhu, Pratap Singh, Amit Yadav, Dr Manju, Ravindra Goswami and Rohitashva Singh.

Meanwhile Artika Shukla is serving cur-rently as additional commissioner Commer-cial Taxes.

K n o w l e d g e a b l e

sources claim that a po-lice investigation is on-going against Artika in a criminal FIR after a woman doctor from Ajmer—Jyotsana Ran-ga—registered FIR claiming that Shukla beat her up and misbe-haved with her while causing disruption in

state work. The incident alleged-

ly occurred on April 22 when Artika was serv-ing as SDM Ajmer. Gov-ernment doctor Jyot-sana was taking sam-ples from an area of the city along with her team and the duo entered in a dispute over sampling.

The dispute turned into a brawl and later the doctor, through an istagasa in CJM Court, registered FIR against Artika.

Jyotsana was sup-ported by all the doctors in Ajmer but on Arti-ka’s appeal, the ADJ Court put a stay on the

FIR. However, Jyotsana then approached the High Court which stayed the ADJ court’s orders and directed the police to register FIR.

Now on the HC’s or-der, an investigation has been initiated against Artika and although she has been trans-ferred from Ajmer to Jaipur, she will not be given the benefit of pro-motion till the time she is accorded the confir-mation. Artika is an IAS of AGMUT cadre and after her marriage she has come to Ra-jasthan on inter-cadre deputation.

Politicians throng Birla’s home to offer condolencesGul Mohammed

Kota: Condolences con-tinue to pour in for Lok Sabha speaker Om Bir-la, whose father Shrikrishna Birla passed away recently. On Thursday as well politicians and people from all walks of life reached Birla’s Dada Bari residence in Kota and offered tributes to late Birla. Gadhwal MP Tirath Singh, RS mem-ber Prabhat Jha, BJP National Secretary Vi-

nod Sonkar, former BJP ministers Kiran Maheshwari & Anita Bhadel, Rajkumari Gurjar, Pabbaram Vish-noi, Pratap Singh Sing-hvi, Ashok Parnami,

Rajpal Singh Shekha-wat, Home Guard DG Rajiv Dasaut were among some prominent people who reached LS Speaker’s residence to offer their condolences.

New Delhi: They say politics is the art of sending subtle message or hints to your oppo-nent without it ever be-ing made obvious to the people while keeping it too ‘crisp’ so that the op-ponent realises the ac-tual meaning of the ‘hints’. It is believed that a good politician is one who keeps an open eye for these messages so that he knows the min-ute details of what the opponent is thinking and planning. By that standard, Sachin Pilot’s

‘visit’ to Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s home town has sent an array of mixed messages for ‘relevant’ political cir-cles in state.

The manner in which Pilot reached Jodhpur on Thursday was noth-ing short of ‘victory parade’ since the former deputy CM reached at the head of not one or two vehicles, or a dozen vehicles rather a hun-dred vehicles and al-most thrice the number of individuals as that of the vehicles!

Pilot had gone to Jodhpur to express his

condolences to the fam-ily of BJP stalwart late Jaswant Singh Jasol. And in fact Pilot wasn’t ‘alone’ too as senior and renowned leaders from the state’s polity, like

Rameshwar Dudi, Deep-endra Singh Shekhawat, Ved Prakash Solanki, Mukesh Bhakar and others too accompanied him and the entire en-tourage was accorded

grand welcomes all along the way especially at Dudu, Kishangarh, Ajmer, Beawar and oth-er spots.

Upon reaching ‘Jasol House’, Pilot supporters

started raising slogans in favor of their leader and at one point it ap-peared as if the ‘leader’ had come to address a public rally leading to election! While Pilot and his ‘entourage’ ex-pressed their condolenc-es over passing away of Jaswant Singh, a few senior Congress leaders from Jodhpur and in fact those from across state, upon knowing of the ‘developments’ in Jodhpur, expressed their displeasure over the entire episode ob-serving that it was not right to ‘showcase’ pow-

er at a time when he has gone to express grief on the passing of a national leader. This is not the tradition of Marwar to make any pomp & show or garland the leader at the time of condolences.

“It wasn’t an election meeting, rather a prayer meet for Singh, what then as the use and pur-pose of this extravagant show of strength?” par-ty members questioned. Interestingly, another curious aspect was that even BJP leaders like Gajendra Singh Shekha-wat and Satish Poonia, also travelled to Jodh-

pur the very same day as Pilot and this situation, is also being seen with much interest by politi-cal observers.

But it wasn’t that Pi-lot made his ‘presence’ felt for just one purpose, however, he made sure that he sends a positive message to his support-ers too and therefore he made a beeline for a supporter’s home where he had lunch and later pushed off to Delhi by flight from Jodhpur air-port, where once again the entourage followed him to see off the ‘be-loved’ leader!

Pilot’s Jodhpur pomp during condolence draws ire from Congmen!

FOREST DEPARTMENT REVIEW MEETING : Form ‘Rajasthan State Forest Development Corporation within 3 months, Gehlot instructsNaresh Sharma

Jaipur: Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has said that conservation of wildlife and expansion of forests is very impor-tant for the balance of environment. “The so-cial forestry scheme launched during the time of former PM In-dira Gandhi, to expand the forest area in the state, should be revived, as the plantation cam-paign can be made suc-cessful only with maxi-mum public participa-

tion. Moreover, a new forest policy should also be formed within three months time,” Gehlot directed while holding a review meeting of For-est Department at the Chief Minister’s resi-dence on Thursday.

“If the general public understands impor-tance of forests and their participation in plantation will be en-sured, then we will be able to achieve the goal of expansion of forests. For this, the Forest De-partment officials

should coordinate with the district administra-tion to create an envi-ronment to plant and take care of maximum number of trees up to village-dhani. For the

purpose the coopera-tion of Rural Develop-ment and Panchayati Raj Department, Educa-tion Department and NGOs etc. can be tak-en,” Gehlot said.

The Chief Minister said that special empha-sis should be given on nursery development to make plantation pro-gram effective. He said that people should be

encouraged to prepare nurseries at local level. “This will allow plants to be available as per requirement for planta-tion. Also, employment opportunities will be available to people. Plants with medicinal properties should be planted in coordination with Ayurveda depart-ment. This will also pro-vide additional income to department,” he said.

Moreover, Gehlot di-rected that the work of planting local species of plants should be sped

up by removing the Ju-liflora and for this, “a plan should be prepared by meeting with the De-partment of Rural De-velopment and Pan-chayati Raj,” he said.

The CM said that in order to increase pro-ductivity of forests, in-crease in production of timber, bamboo and small forest produce, it was announced to con-stitute the ‘Rajasthan State Forest Develop-ment Corporation’ in this year’s budget. The Forest Department

should constitute this corporation within three months. He said that the department should also ensure re-munerative price of small forest produce.

Reviewing Rantham-bore, Sariska and Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve, he said that state government is very serious about con-servation of tigers. Forest department should not observe any lacunae in conserva-tion of wildlife includ-ing tigers.

New Delhi: There is a good news for Congress men in Rajasthan. Newly appointed state incharge Ajay Maken’s health has improved over the past few days after he went into self quarantine, effectively putting on hold several important issues that needed to be addressed. As Maken went into quarantine, he put on hold his meeting with leaders and legisla-tors. Moreover, neither did he take part in the AICC meetings, nor did he tour Rajasthan and in fact had to can-cel his visits.

Party workers from Rajasthan are eagerly awaiting Maken’s ‘return’ since after Rajya Sab-ha election and po-litical turmoil, min-ister incharge of dis-tricts have been as-suring workers that appointments would be done soon. But with each passing day, the discontent in party’s work force is increasing. Such is the situation that even eighteen MLAs

are also awaiting Maken’s ‘revival’ in the hope that they will also be accorded some position in po-litical appointments of cabinet reshuffle.

Maken is the mem-ber of the three mem-ber committee on Ra-jasthan issues and al-though he has been continuously in touch with leaders in Ra-jasthan through calls, the work has not gath-ered momentum. In fact CM Ashok Ge-hlot was scheduled to travel to New Delhi on 26th September where he would have met the three mem-ber committee and held discussions on various issues, how-ever with Ahmed Pa-tel also falling ill, Ge-hlot changes his plan.

Udaipur: Three ac-cused of a scam involv-ing the sale of the five star Laxmi Vilas Palace hotel, Udaipur ap-peared in CBI court to furnish bonds as di-rected by high court.

Ashish Guha, MD of Lazard India Limited, Jyotsna Suri, MD of Bharat Hotels Limit-ed, and Kantilal Kar-amsey appeared before the court and fur-nished the bonds.

The high court had on 22 September stayed their arrest issued by the CBI court and asked them to appear before the CBI court to furnish the bonds.

Another accused and former union minister Arun Shourie has the time to furnish bond till October 15, whereas the Supreme Court has given a relief to Pradeep Baijal, on the ground of health and stayed the high court order to appear before

the CBI court to fur-nish bond.

The case pertains to the sale of public sec-tor Indian Tourism De-velopment Corpora-tion’s Laxmi Vilas Pal-ace Hotel to a private firm around two dec-ades ago.

The property was

sold to Bharat Hotels Ltd for Rs 7.52 crore when Shourie was the minister in charge of divestment in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre.

During a prelimi-nary investigation by

the CBI, the property was valued at Rs 252 crore, suggesting a loss of Rs 244 crore to the exchequer.

A special CBI court ordered the registra-tion of an FIR against former Union disin-vestment minister Arun Shourie, the de-partment’s former sec-retary Pradip Baijal, Lazard India Ltd man-aging director Ashish Guha, valuer Kantilal Karamsey and Bharat Hotels director Jyot-sana Suri over the sale.

The accused ap-proached the high court after arrest war-rants were issued against them by the lower court last month.

Jaipur: While the Jaipur police has regis-tered FIR against Sachin Pilot’s PR manager and a senior journalist from Rajasthan, the state-ments of the duo could not be registered on Thursday, as perhaps the Jaipur police deemed it fit to first issue notices to both the individuals un-der section 41(a), after which the formal legal proceedings will be car-ried out. Meanwhile, sources in Pilot camp have hinted that in the next 3-4 days, a FR or clo-sure report in the matter will be filed. However, there was no official con-firmation on the same.

employees of agency Hansa Research Group- contracted by BARC to carry out the research. They in turn were paying certain households selected as barometers for calcu-lating TRPs to keep certain channels like Republic switched on to show higher TRPs,” Singh said.

Republic TV soon put out a statement denying the allegations, saying it will file criminal defa-mation case against the

Mumbai Police Com-missioner. “Republic will fight back, Repub-lic will continue its in-vestigation into the Su-shant Singh Rajput case, the Palghar case and any other case,” the statement read.

Republic TV also aired another FIR with the portion of the state-ment of the employee (Relationship Manager) of the Hansa Research Group, where he says that he used to insti-gate and offer money to panel homes, with Bar-o-Meter, in order

to increase the TRP of India Today and other channels.

Meanwhile, Singh further said some households were being paid as much as Rs 500 per day to keep particu-lar channels on.

“In some cases, peo-

ple who did not under-stand English were keeping English chan-nels like Republic on through the day. We have recorded their statements,” the Com-missioner said.

As per police, it was Hansa and BARC that

first spotted “unusual trends” in TRPs follow-ing which they ap-proached the police. The crime branch then registered an FIR at Kandivali police station on charges of cheating and criminal breach of trust, following which they arrested a former employee of Hansa and his associate.

The Commissioner said that by manipulat-ing TRPs, the accused caused losses to adver-tisers and other news channels who would suffer from lower TRPs

as compared to these channels. “The TV ad-vertisement industry is worth Rs 30,000 – 40,000 crores,” he said.

BARC, that functions under the Ministry of Information and Broad-casting and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), has in-stalled approximately 30,000 barometers in various parts of the country based on which it awards ratings to var-ious TV channels. Based on these ratings, advertisers pay for their advertisement.

BLACK AND WHITEWHITEhe elegance and charm that black and white photography brings to a photograph, coloured photographs cannot re-ally deliver the same thing. If you ever no-

tice, most of the intense photo-graphs will be in a black and white format- this helps in cap-turing and conveying the emo-tions to-the-point, and a colour-ful photo distracts the eye to focus on everything else, except the message that the photo is trying to convey.

Portraits, landscapes and any abstract photo can be a great idea for black and white conversions. For all the bud-ding photographers out there, there are a few tips and tricks to attain that best shot, if you are opting for black and white photography.

Texture, shape and con-trast: Keep looking for these three things everywhere you go, since they would be the point of focus in this type of photography. Since the colours are not involved, the contrast, shape and texture of the image is what going to make it look unique.

Always shoot in RAW + JPEG: This is something that helps in getting out the right tone of the image. The best thing is, it can be adjusted ac-cording to your wish, so you can set the mood according to what you want.

Capture uniqueness: If you want to be an expert in what you do, you have to think out of the box; in this case, click out of the box. Open the creative eye of your mind and start search-ing for angles and shots which others cannot think of easily.

Now that we are already talk-ing about black and white pho-tos, do you remember the ‘Black and White Challenge’ that went

viral on social media dur-ing the lockdown period? Yes, we’re talking about the one that went extremely vi-ral. Women all across the glove posted monochrome pictures of themselves on their social media handles to promote women empower-ment, accompanied by the hashtags- #ChallengeAccept-ed and #WomenSupporting-

Women. The main purpose of this challenge was to show solidarity and sup-port to other women across the world. Why black and white? Well, be-cause the emotions cannot be ex-pressed as well in

other formats, as they can be

portrayed in black and white!

T

City First explains the beauty of ‘Black and White Photography’ and why it is the most elegant and referred way of capturing emotions, rather than colour photography!

She was comforted and was given fluids and some-thing to eat. A while later her anxiety and restless-ness increased. She also started complaining of stomach pain. As the situ-ation was developing, I asked the lead to a page for a doctor.

By sheer Providence and divine destiny of this would be newborn, there were two very accom-plished doctors on board. One of them Dr Nagaraj is a plastic surgeon who works in King Fahd hospi-tal in Riyadh and the oth-er Dr Shailaja a Gynae-cologist and an Obstetrics surgeon, heading the fetal medicine department in Cloud Nine hospital.

We were near Jaipur, cruising at FL 390.

She was initially diag-nosed with Gastric pain or just Constipation and the doctors felt that she would be fine. However, her discomfort and rest-lessness kept getting worse. Both doctors were in constant attendance. I spoke to the lady doctor who assured me that she

is watching her carefully.A little later North of

Bhopal, came to know that she has started bleeding followed by the shattering news that she has suffered an abortion.

Forward galley and the Lav were swiftly and effi-ciently converted into a makeshift ward/ labour room taking all precau-tions by an excellent team of cabin crew who rose to the requirements of the occasion.

They were very bril-liantly supported by sev-eral Captains and Crew travelling ACM and Dead Head. I was waiting for one final update from the doctors to decide on my next course of action.

As I was mulling over this disheartening piece of news, heard and no-

ticed a sudden increase in the activity levels in the cabin- screaming, shouting, clapping, and a faint cry of what sound-ed like a newborn- it was a baby boy!

From a feeling of deep sadness, it turned to a feeling of intense joy- nev-er witnessed fortunes turning so swiftly and so miraculously!

Don’t think there was a single soul on board who didn’t have goosebumps on him or her at this mo-ment. So the youngster was born on Cloud Nine with the help of a doctor from Cloud Nine! The baby was premature and there was not much clari-ty on how many months pregnant she was- could have been anything- she had earlier mentioned 5

months?My decision-making

skills were getting tested with rapidly unfolding situations! Although the doctors confirmed to me that the mother and child are doing well, things could again worsen any moment!

Nagpur was 500m in TS, .Indore had a closure, Hy-derabad was the best op-tion to divert in case of any new contingency. At the bottom of my heart, I was hoping and praying that the youngster holds on for another hour and a bit, he did well, much bet-ter than expected at his ripe old age of 5 mins!

I didn’t want her to land up in Hyderabad in this COVID times and with a premature baby- she was travelling alone.

In my address to the pas-sengers, I informed them that, “We have an extra passenger on board.” POB was also revised. plenty of congratulatory calls on air on Nagpur, Chennai and Bangalore frequencies. Nagpur gave me direct BL552 for Ban-galore 27L from just south of Bhopal- enjoyed the uninterrupted high-speed run.

Post landing Birth on Board form was filled, don’t think it has ever been filled in a domestic flight in India ever- and it is most appropriately ti-tled FFS 007.

On the ground amidst all the frenzy, I could sense a genuine sense of happi-ness and joy amongst all present, KIAL staff, Aster Clinic staff, in all the

gloom surrounding us, people were looking for a reason to celebrate and they got one.

There were banners, chocolates, gifts- and the brave mother was given a rousing reception!

Met 007! Had a look at

his face, of course, he was unaffected by all the com-motion around him, by now he was an hour and a half old.

As for me, I couldn’t have asked for a happier Air Force Day eve!

Kristen Stewart, who is current-ly in a relationship with Dylan Meyer, spoke candidly about the pressure of dating in the

public eye during her interview.”The first time I ever dated a girl, I was immediately being asked if I was a lesbian. And it’s like, ‘God, I’m 21

years old,” Stewart revealed while adding she felt like maybe there were things that have hurt peo-ple she’s been with.

Kristen immediately clari-fied that it’s not because she felt ashamed of being “open-ly gay” but because she didn’t like giving herself to

the public, in a way. For the 30-year-old actress, it felt like

such “thievery” while she termed that particular period of time as being “sort of cagey.” —Agency

PRESSURE OF DATING

Love is LoveD

an Levy is calling out Comedy Central India. The 37-year-old Schitt’s Creek actor spoke out after the network’s social media account removed a scene that included

two men kissing. “You showed the kiss between two women, you showed the kiss between a wom-an and a man, then removed the kiss between two men? This is a show about the power of in-clusivity. The censorship of gay intimacy is making a harmful statement against that message #loveislove,” he wrote in re-sponse. In the clip, his character David plays spin the bottle alongside Dustin Milligan‘s Ted, as well as Emily Hampshire‘s Stevie, An-nie Murphy‘s Alexis and Noah Reid‘s char-acter Patrick. CITY BUZZ

mid the pandemic, World Post Office Day is a great oppor-tunity to pay tribute to the postal opera-tors, postal workers and everyone else

involved in delivering mails.World Post Day is observed

every year on 9 October. Be-fore the digital communica-tion came into our lives, sending letters by post was the only option and if it was an urgent message - it was the telegraph, which revolu-tionized long-distance com-munication. World Post Day was declared by the 1969 Uni-versal Postal Congress in To-kyo to mark the anniversary of the Universal Postal Un-ion’s (UPU) creation in 1874.

The day is being celebrated to bring awareness about the role of people engaged in postal services. Historically posts have a big contribution to the development of busi-nesses and economic activi-ties globally. Universal Postal Union (UPU) paved the way

for efficient postal services and it became an agency of the United Nations in 1948.

Director-General of the Univer-sal Postal

Union, Bishar Hussein said that we all need to recognize the incredible

sacrifices made by postal opera-

tors and

their staff during the global COVID-19 pan-

demic. Some workers trag-ically lost their lives; others confronted life-changing damage to their health. He also added, “since our earli-est beginnings, we have over-come wars, natural disasters and pestilence. We have al-ways delivered. The year 2020, however, was the year that the postal industry showed the world its resil-ience, its determination, and the invaluable role it plays in every society. We showed we are more than a mail.”

COMPLEX SURGERY treated wellCITY FIRST

A 36-year-old father of 2 young kids, was brought to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital Heart

Centre, Jaipur on 8 October 2020, in critical condition to the trained eye Dr MA Chishti, Di-rector Heart Surgery Depart-ment. On diagnose, it was appar-ent that he had Marfan’s Syn-drome. It is a rare and life-threatening disease. Surgery is challenging and complex. Aortic dissection occurs in 1-3 patients per lac population in a year.

The operation aimed to re-place, repair and restore circu-lation to all parts of the body including the heart. The opera-tion took about 8 hours to com-plete and was done bloodlessly.
