New Westminster Abbey Window Is Unveiled

Westminster Abbey has recently unveiled a new stained glass window designed by David

Hockney and commissioned to celebrate the reign of Her Majesty The Queen.

It depicts a vividly coloured country scene reflecting The Queen’s deep affection and connection to the countryside.

The new window in the Abbey’s north transept, which was plain glass until now, is called formally The Queen’s Window.

David Hockney is one of the most influential artists of The Queen’s reign and his contribu-tion has been recognised with an Order of Merit and a Companion of Honour award. This is his first work in stained glass.

The brief to the artist was to provide something symbolic or representational of the subject, rather than a heraldic or figurative design, and for it to be recognisable as his work.

Hockney’s response was to design a country scene, set within his beloved Yorkshire

featuring hawthorn blossom, using his distinct colour palette of yellow, red, blue, pink, orange and greens. The subject reflects the Queen as a countrywoman and her widespread delight in, and yearning for, the countryside.

Stained glass artists and craftspeople at Barley Studio created the window using traditional techniques, working with the artist to translate his vision into glass. Barley Studio is a leading stained glass studio of over forty years based in York.

The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, said: “I’m very pleased that David Hockney accepted my invitation to design this window which is a celebration of the reign of Her Majesty The Queen. What he has produced is directly accessible with wonderful colours. It is a country scene to honour a woman who loves her country.”

The window was dedicated formally by the Dean in the presence of the artist, his family, friends and invited guests early in October.

ALL THE NEWS YOU NEED ON OUR ROYAL FAMILY

www.royallife.co.uk

Welcome to another Royal Wedding issue of Royal Life, and whilst the marriage of Princess Eugenie to her long-time boyfriend Jack Brooksbank was not as high profile an affair

as Prince Harry’s marriage to Meghan Markle in May, it was still a spectacular, star-studded celebration.

On Prince Harry’s wedding day he became a Duke and his new wife became the Duchess of Sussex. Princess Eugenie and her new husband do not, however, inherit any new titles because only sons and grandsons of the monarch receive Royal dukedoms. So when Princess Eugenie (born Princess Eugenie Victoria Helena of York) got married, there was no precedent for her to be named the duchess of any realm. And as a female, she isn’t eligible to inherit her father’s Dukedom of York.

It is the Queen’s prerogative to make an exception, but this was always going to be unlikely. While Her Majesty is very fond of both Princess Eugenie and her older sister, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie is not engaged full-time in the career of being a member of the Royal Family - and she has said that it already “bugs” her being called a Princess!

Talking of inherited titles brings us neatly to the subject of Prince Harry and Meghan’s baby news. The official announcement was made by the Palace two days after Princess Eugenie’s wedding, by which time the happy couple were already half a world away in Australia - you can check out their amazing adventures down under in this very issue.

The bookmakers have already started taking bets on what the name of the child will be, with Victoria and Alice leading the list of girls’ names and Albert tied with Arthur and Philip if it’s a boy.

As for the title that the new arrival inherits, well if Prince Harry and Meghan’s baby is a boy, it will automatically be given the title of The Earl of Dumbarton. This is a title that was given to Prince Harry by the Queen on the day of his wedding.

If the Royals have a daughter, she could well be called by the title of Lady Mountbatten-Windsor. Any subsequent sons would be named Lord Mountbatten-Windsor. We are all still in the dark as to when Meghan’s baby is due but the media seem to have settled on April for some reason. Well, for one reason actually, a deduction worthy of Hercule Poirot, and you can decide for yourselves what you think of it.

Whilst supporting Prince Harry at an Invictus Games event in Australia, the mother-to-be was looking elegant as usual in a white jacket over her black shirt. She wore beautiful jewellery to finish off the look - and the eyes of clue-seekers were drawn towards the rings on her right hand. Meghan wore three stacked rings, each with a gemstone, which have led to much speculation that it had a special meaning to do with the baby’s birth.

As Meghan’s birthday is in August and Prince Harry’s is in September, some thought the green and blue gems at the top and bottom of the stack were their birthstones of green peridot and blue sapphire. The gem sandwiched in the middle band looks to be diamond, which is the birthstone of the month of April. It’s as good a clue as any, but we prefer to wait for the official announcement, which we are sure will not be long now. Allan Bryce, Editor

PRINCESS EUGENIE & JACK BROOKSBANK

THE CELEBRATIONS CONTINUE WITH

A STAR-STUDDED ROYAL WEDDINGYou wait years for a Royal Wedding and then two

come along in the same year. Royal Life reports on

another majestic marriage ceremony to remember…

On May 19th, 2018, Prince Harry married Meghan Markle at St. George’s Chapel. Then on October 12th wedding bells

rang out at the same historical Windsor Castle venue for the marriage of Princess Eugenie and her long-term partner Jack Brooksbank.

The Royal Family was out in force for the event, with Princess Eugenie’s grandparents the Queen and Prince Philip in attendance alongside Prince Charles, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Princess Eugenie looked stunning on the day in an elegant and classic ivory dress, designed by British-based Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos, and wearing the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara, lent to her by the Queen, with diamond and emerald drop earrings, gifted to her by the Groom.

The Queen is said to have taken a lead in the organisation of the day and was joined by her 97-year-old husband, Prince Philip, who seemed in good spirits. The nation’s longest-reigning monarch looked radiant in an ice blue Angela Kelly coat and hat - with large gold and diamond buttons and an ice blue and peach scalloped lamé dress.

Until the last minute it was not certain Prince Philip would attend, having retired from public life and still recovering from hip replacement

surgery. There were loud cheers when he was first spotted sitting next to the Queen in the car.

As expected, the Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex did not overshadow the bride on the day, though they were both the epitome of style as usual. The Duchess of Cambridge wore a raspberry-hued Alexander McQueen dress to the wedding, while the Duchess of Sussex looked equally stunning in a streamlined navy Givenchy coat dress. Meanwhile, Prince Charles arrived without his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, who was reportedly attending a Scottish school event.

Many celebrity guests were in attendance too, including Pixie Geldof, comedian Jimmy Carr, writer Julian Fellowes, artist Tracey Emin, singer Ellie Goulding, actress Liv Tyler, comedian Stephen Fry, Australian singer Holly Candy (Valance), singer James Blunt, models Cara Delevingne, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell and Hollywood actress Demi Moore.

HERE COMES THE BRIDEThe bride travelled to St George’s Chapel in a 1977 Rolls Royce Phantom VI - the same car that Catherine Middleton travelled to Westminster Abbey in - accompanied by her father. The Rolls Royce was presented to the Queen in 1978 for her Silver Jubilee by the Society of Motor Manufac-turers and Traders.

Onlookers waved small union flags as the bride ascended the steps with the Duke of York, who at one stage moved to help fix his daughter’s train.

Meanwhile, Sarah Ferguson was quick to greet Royal fans when she arrived for her daughter’s wedding before heading into the chapel with Princess Beatrice, her sister’s Maid of Honour.

As with 2018’s previous Royal Wedding, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, acted as pageboy and bridesmaid. Princess Charlotte waved enthu-siastically at the crowds as they approached the chapel, though negotiating the steps in the high winds proved tricky. Princess Charlotte struggled to keep balance, while pageboy Louis de Givenchy - son of family friends - took a tumble.

Some of the youngsters were seen giggling and joking before walking down the aisle, appearing to imitate the royal trumpeters. However, Prince George held his hand over his ear as the musicians heralded Princess Eugenie’s arrival. Other bridesmaids and pageboys included Theodora Williams - daughter of pop star Robbie Williams and Ayda Field (who were also in attendance), Zara and Mike Tindall’s spirited four-year-old Mia, Peter and Autumn Phillips’s daughters Savannah and Isla, and Princess Eugenie’s goddaughter Maud Windsor. However there was no sign of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s baby son, Prince Louis, still too young to attend the event.

A MOVING CEREMONYPrincess Eugenie could not hide her excitement as she walked down the aisle with her proud father Prince Andrew before greeting her groom, who appeared to wipe away tears at the altar.

Overcome with emotion at the first sight of his beautiful bride, Mr. Brooksbank, 32, told Eugenie “you look perfect” when the couple met at the altar during the moving ceremony, packed with an 850-strong congregation of celebrities, Royals and VIP guests.

Princess Eugenie’s dress featured a neckline that folded around the shoulders to a low back that draped into a flowing full-length train. Princess Eugenie specifically requested the low back feature, to show off her scars following back surgery at the age of 12 to correct scoliosis.

The dress also included a number of symbols that were meaningful to Princess Eugenie as motifs, including a thistle for Scotland acknowl-edging the couple’s fondness for Balmoral, a Shamrock for Ireland as a nod to the bride’s Ferguson family, the York Rose and ivy represent-ing the couple’s home.

In a nod to tradition, the bride’s wedding bouquet contained an evergreen shrub plucked from the private retreat of Queen Victoria. The floral arrangement also featured sprigs of myrtle taken from the terraced walls of Osborne House, the Isle of Wight home of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

The couple’s Order of Service had previously revealed that Mr. Brooksbank would not be wearing a ring and Princess Eugenie would not promise to obey her husband. It also highlighted Mr. Brooksbank’s unusual middle name - Stamp.

The groom said: “I Jack Christopher Stamp take thee Eugenie Victoria Helena to my wedded wife.”

The bride and groom chose a traditional marriage ceremony, which featured language such as “thou” and “thee” instead of “you”.

David Conner, the Dean of Windsor, officiated over the vows and delivered the address. Maid of Honour Princess Beatrice, who was wearing a royal blue outfit by Ralph and Russo and a headband style hat by Sarah Cant, read a touching extract from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel The Great Gatsby during the ceremony.

The choir also sang a Gaelic Blessing, and Italian singer-songwriter Andrea Bocelli performed Bach’s Ave Maria.

Afterwards the happy couple shared two shy kisses on the steps just outside the chapel before they boarded the Scottish State Coach for a public ride around Windsor. As they left the castle, they passed the Galilee Porch at St. George’s Chapel where they were waved off by other senior members of the Royal Family, including the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The carriage continued on to Windsor High Street, giving the couple the opportunity to see the well-wishers lining the streets.

A ROYAL RECEPTIONFollowing the couple’s fairytale ride they returned to Windsor Castle to continue the wedding festivities at a Royal luncheon hosted by the Queen. The lunch, a stand-up reception, was held in the Waterloo Chamber, the Grand Reception Room in the castle, and attended by 800 guests including all of the members of the Royal Family present at the wedding.

The couple’s wedding cake was mounted on a gold stand. The five-tier centrepiece, made of layers of red velvet and chocolate, was covered in white icing and featured the bride and groom’s initials E and J in golden monograms around the base. The cake, crafted by London-based cake designer Sophie Cabot, was decorated with orange leaves and dark green ivy sugar work. Buckingham Palace said it was inspired by the rich colours of autumn.

Royal Wedding guests were given burgundy goodie bags emblazoned with luxurious golden embroidery of the couple’s initials. They contained

a commemorative shortbread and a big chocolate coin representing Windsor Castle, a rain poncho in case bad weather struck and a fridge magnet to keep memories of the day in their minds.

Both Princess Eugenie’s father, Prince Andrew, Duke of York and Jack gave speeches during the reception. Prince Andrew had a little fun at his new son-in-law’s expense during his speech and had the crowd chuckling.

“The Duke told a story about their dog Jack (a Norfolk terrier),” a source at the wedding revealed. “One day, I think it was early in the relationship, he shouted ‘Jack, get off the chair!’ And the dog didn’t move. But Jack did!”

The Duke of York then “gave Jack a big hug at the end of his speech,” the source added.

After the reception the happy couple made the three-mile drive to their evening reception at the Royal Lodge, Prince Andrew’s royal residence that he shares with his ex Sarah Ferguson.

Similar to Prince Harry and Meghan, Princess Eugenie and her new husband made the journey in style in a swanky gunmetal-colored Aston Martin DB10 sedan. The slick vehicle was one of eight models for the 2015 007 film Spectre.

Aston Martin wished the newlyweds well in a special tweet on its official Twitter account that read, “Congratulations to Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank. Leaving Windsor Castle in the Aston Martin DB10, built especially for James Bond.

AN EVENING CELEBRATIONAfter wearing her hair up in an intricate bun for the wedding ceremony, the bride chose to let her shoulder length tresses down in loose waves for the evening celebration, accessorising with a hair slide that belonged to her grandmother, the Queen.

Adding the perfect finishing touch to her look was a pair of diamond and emerald drop earrings, which were a wedding gift from her new husband.

The wedding night party for 300 family and friends was by all accounts full of wild dancing, humorous and emotion-filled speeches, with liveried waiters serving gourmet pizza and bespoke cocktails. Guests also drank margaritas made with Casamigos tequila. The groom is a U.K. brand ambassador for the brand, co-founded by George Clooney.

At one point Robbie Williams took to the stage to encourage guests to join in singing some of his most famous songs. Princess Eugenie also joined supermodels Kate Moss, Carla Delevingne and Naomi Campbell in a ‘fake catwalk’ routine on the dance floor.

Like the bride and groom’s wedding cake, the evening reception had an autumn theme, with gorgeous red, orange and yellow floral presenta-tions. Princess Eugenie’s mother, Sarah, Duchess of York, changed out of the knee-length green dress she wore to the wedding ceremony into a lighter green gown for the evening reception.

The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales did not attend the event, and neither did the Duke and Duchess of Sussex because they were due to head off on their first international tour the following day. It was also later reported that Meghan might have told the new bride her baby news at the event – two days before the official palace announcement. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did attend however and reportedly “had a great time.”

THE PARTY GOES ONThe party ended at 5.30am on Saturday morning but up to 500 guests continued to celebrate at a 12-hour fairground-themed event starting in the afternoon. This featured bands, a Ferris wheel, a merry-go-round, dodgems, ice cream vans, popcorn stalls and a coconut shy.

As celebrities partied the night away, stunning official photographs were released. The pictures, taken by photographer Alex Bramall, included a black and white image of the couple sharing a kiss during the carriage procession.

Another shot captured the bride in an elegant Zac Posen silk gown as she headed to the evening reception with her new husband.

Another official picture of the bridal party captured a beaming Prince George next to his sister Princess Charlotte as Mr Brooksbank rested his hand on the shoulder of Theodora, the daughter of Robbie Williams and Ayda Field.

And a group photo taken in the White Drawing Room at Windsor showed both the bride and groom’s families. RL

ROYAL NEWS

ROYALLIFENEWSA roundup of the very latest Royal news and happenings, including a new honour for the

Duchess of Cambridge, a gala concert for Prince Charles and much, much more…

Her Majesty is back from her Balmoral break and out and about again. October saw her paying a

visit to The Lexicon shopping centre in Bracknell to see how the town centre has been regenerated.

The Lexicon represents one of the biggest town centre regenerations in the UK. In addition to 70 new shops and restaurants, improvements have also been made to the existing High Street buildings and local landmark, The Bull Public House, has been restored and extended. During the visit, The Queen toured the new development and met town planners, architects, builders and council

representatives who had been involved in the Bracknell town development project, before greeting hundreds of well-wishers who had come out to welcome her.

The Queen also paid a visit to Fenwick department store where she met store directors and management teams from British High Street retailers. It was hats and handbags galore as the Queen viewed displays of British merchandise and spoke to shop assistants.

At the end of the tour Her Majesty heard music from the Berkshire Maestros Band and unveiled a plaque to commemorate this very special day for Bracknell.

V&A Visit for The Duchess of CambridgeThe Duchess of Cambridge

recently opened the Victoria and Albert Museum’s new

photography centre in her first visit to the museum since becoming its first Royal Patron in March 2018.

The Victoria and Albert Museum, known as the V&A, is the world’s largest museum of decorative arts and design. Its new Photography Centre follows the transfer of the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) Collection and includes thousands of photographs, camera equipment and journals. The new collection has allowed the museum to redesign its telling of the story of photography, enabling a vivid experience for visitors to travel back to the beginnings of the art form in the early 20th century and forward into the present day.

During the Duchess’s visit, curators took a moment to show their Royal guest a coronet worn by Queen Victoria. At the end of the brief tour, the Duchess of Cambridge unveiled a plaque to mark the opening of the new Photography Centre.

The Centre is now open to the general public and will more than double the space dedicated to photography at the Museum.

Buckingham Palace Gala to mark the Prince of Wales’ 70th Birthday

Dame Judi Dench, Sir Kenneth Branagh and Stephen Fry entertained hundreds of guests at a recent celebration for the Prince of Wales’ upcoming 70th birthday.

The event, held in Buckingham Palace on October 25th, was to recognise Prince Charles’s support for the arts.

Fry thanked the Prince of Wales, who is patron of more than 70 artistic organisations, for the support he has given to the industry, as well as offering some advice.

“The autumn of our years can be most fruitful,” he told the Prince. “Everyone who works in the field of arts in this country knows how extremely and freakishly lucky we are that our Prince of Wales has such a genuine knowledge of, unquenchable thirst for, and understanding of the role and value of the arts in our public and our personal lives.”

At a time when the country is questioning its place in the world “more quizzically and uncertainly than we have for some time”, the strength of our arts should remain a “source of pride”, he continued.

Around 300 guests watched performances from the Royal Opera House and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Excerpts of Shakespeare plays were performed for Prince Charles and the guests, with Dame Judy playing Titania in a piece from A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Sir Kenneth delivered the opening prologue from Henry V at the beginning of the gala show. Actor Simon Beale and singer Sir Bryn Terfel also performed.

After the show, which was held in the Palace’s ballroom, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall met performers.

Organisations which Prince Charles is a patron of include the Royal College of Music, the Royal Opera, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Television Society.

The King and Queen of the Netherlands recently paid a state

visit to the UK aimed at strengthening the bonds between the two nations. The Queen welcomed King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima to Britain during a ceremony full of pomp and pageantry. The visiting head of state kissed the Queen warmly on both cheeks and clasped her hands with his, a gesture that was repeated by his wife. On Horse Guards Parade, the King - making his first official trip to the UK - was also greeted by Britain’s political leaders including Prime Minister Theresa May, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and the Home Secretary Sajid Javid. The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall had escorted King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima from the Dutch embassy to Whitehall.

Waiting on King Henry VIII’s former jousting yard was the guard of honour formed by the 1st Battalion, Coldstream Guards, in their scarlet tunics and bearskins.

Nearby was the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment in their shining breastplates and plumed helmets, and

the Band of the Household Cavalry. The faint sound of royal gun salutes could be heard during the ceremonial greeting - 41 volleys fired by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery in Green Park to mark the official welcome, and a further 41 fired by the Honourable Artillery Company from their position near the Tower of London.

The Royal party left Horse Guards Parade in a carriage procession with the Queen and the King travelling in the Diamond Jubilee state coach.

The visiting head of state had offered the Queen his arm in assistance before she climbed the carriage’s steps but she politely declined.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall followed in the Australian state coach with Queen Maxima. Later, the traditional exchange of gifts saw the Queen present her guests with a bound album

celebrating ties between the Netherlands and the UK, and the Royal houses of each country.

During the recent visit of the King and Queen of the Netherlands, the Duchess of Cambridge attended a

state dinner at Buckingham Palace where she wore an Alexander McQueen gown, the famous Lover’s Knot tiara (which was previously worn by Princess Diana), and a diamond and pearl necklace first owned by Queen Alexandra in the 19th century. But her most impressive accessory was pinned to her dress: the Royal Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II.

The honour is given by the Queen at her discretion to members of the Royal Family as a reward for their service. The badge usually includes a small portrait of the monarch painted on ivory, surrounded by diamonds, and placed over a ribbon, and is only worn at formal events, like the state dinner. According to Debrett’s, an etiquette authority, it’s common to wear decorations of order at royal or state occasions, including those in the presence of the Queen.

Two of the Queen’s daughters-in-law have received the Royal Victorian Order, which are awards “made personally by The Queen, for services to the Sovereign,” according to the Palace. Sophie, Countess of Wessex (wife of Prince Edward) was appointed in 2010 and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall (wife of Prince Charles) followed in 2012. The honour is denoted by a deep blue sash, which Camilla was wearing at the banquet.

The Duke of Cambridge recently joined the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) at the Culham Science Centre near Oxford for a

glimpse of a potentially world-changing energy project. The Duke was at Culham to mark the end of

construction of the UK’s new nuclear fusion experiment, MAST Upgrade.

His Royal Highness heard about the latest developments and research into nuclear fusion – the power source of the Sun – and how it could be commercialised to provide huge amounts of low-carbon electricity.

Prince William was given a tour of a machine capable of creating artificial stars and stood yards away from the MAST Upgrade chamber where temperatures of 50 million degrees C will be created – three times hotter than the Sun - before running a test of a ‘plasma’, the hot gas that will form inside MAST Upgrade when it operates.

The UK Atomic Energy Authority runs the UK’s national fusion research lab at Culham and its £50 million MAST Upgrade device will put Britain at the forefront of international research when it begins operating in 2019.

The Queen recently visited the Royal Air Force Club’s premises in Piccadilly,

London, just round the corner from Buckingham Palace, to mark its centenary year.

The RAF Club, which is open to former and serving officers of the Royal Air Force, was founded in 1918 and formally opened its doors in 1922 when it was visited by King George V and Queen Mary.

The Queen has been Patron of the Club since 1952, and during the visit Her Majesty opened the new wing, which houses amenities including a fitness suite and business centre.

Following a tour of the Club, The Queen unveiled a new stained-glass window, which was designed to commemorate women

in the Royal Air Force. The new artwork has been created by artist and designer Helen Whittaker, and aims to highlight the development of female roles in the RAF over its 100 years.

Her Majesty was able to meet some female representatives from the RAF, including Jo Salter, who was Britain’s first female fast jet pilot, who flew Tornado’s with 617 Squadron.

The visit then finished with an unveiling of a new portrait of The Queen that been commissioned to celebrate the Club’s 100th Birthday. Started in February 2018 and set in the White Drawing Room of Windsor Castle, the portrait was painted by Benjamin Sullivan – who won the BP Portrait Award in 2017.

The Prince of Wales spoke to paramedics about their mental wellbeing during a recent visit to the London Ambulance Service (LAS).

Prince Charles visited the headquarters of the UK’s busiest ambulance service in Waterloo Road, south London, and spoke to call handlers and nurses as well as leaving staff “super impressed” by his role in a defibrillator demonstration. He also met a new team dedicated to helping people in mental health crises.

Community defibrillation manager Lynsey Grant was delighted when the Prince joined in with her defibrillation demonstration. He zapped a dummy with electricity in the heart-starting demonstration.

Ms Grant said Prince Charles was trained in CPR and was genuinely interested in the life-saving practice.

Prince Charles also spoke with team members forming a “mental health joint response car” which LAS said was the first team of its kind in the country.

It hopes the rapid-response team will reduce stress on ambulances, with nearly 10% of emergency calls to LAS from people experiencing mental health problems.

Heather Lawrence, chair of LAS, said it was a privilege to introduce Prince Charles to her staff.

His visit comes about 18 months after his son, the Duke of Sussex, visited the 999 control room at LAS to talk about wellbeing. Prince Harry’s visit was part of the Heads Together campaign he founded with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Prince William Meets Rescue Divers

The Duke of Cambridge recently hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace to recognise the extraordinary contribution made by British rescue divers and support

staff to the Tham Luang cave rescue effort in Thailand earlier this year.

On 23 June, the football team were trapped in a flash flood inside Tham Luang, 4km from the cave’s entrance. An international effort including British cave divers transported the boys through flooded, narrow sections of the cave in the dark using guide ropes, rescuing them all.

His Royal Highness first met Christopher Jewell, Lance Corporal Connor Roe, Jim Warny and Martin Holroyd, who helped bring the trapped boys through the system of chambers

and flooded passages to safety before being introduced to staff who provided support for the divers during the rescue mission. This vital group helped with everything from sourcing dive equipment to booking flights, arranging visas, providing medical advice and fundraising.

The reception was organised in association with Mountain Rescue England and Wales, of whom The Duke is Patron, and the British Cave Rescue Council.

Wedding Celebration At Windsor Castle

‘A Royal Wedding: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’ is a new exhibition at Windsor Castle, which celebrates the May nuptials of Meghan and Prince Harry in Windsor

- an event watched by millions around the world.Meghan’s couture designer wedding dress will take centre

stage at the exhibition, alongside Prince Harry’s outfit and those of the bridesmaids and pageboys.

Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy designed the Duchess of Sussex’s gorgeous gown. Featuring a bateau neckline and a cropped sleeve, the full outfit, including Meghan’s shoes, and her five-metre veil decorated with hand-embroidered flowers which paid tribute to the 53 countries of the Commonwealth, will be on display in a large glass box.

Prince Harry’s wedding outfit, a frockcoat uniform of the Household Cavalry, will be on display beside Meghan’s dress.

Caroline de Guitar, senior curator of decorative arts at the Royal Collection Trust, said: “This is a unique opportunity to see those outfits…worn on such a special day and actually in the surroundings where they were worn here at Windsor Castle.”

Also on show, will be the diamond and platinum bandeau tiara the royal bride wore on the day. The Queen lent Meghan the tiara to wear on her wedding day - it was originally made in 1932 for the Queen’s grandmother, Queen Mary.

Visitors can listen to the couple talk about their wedding day in a recording made for the exhibition.

The Duchess explains in the recording: “When it came to the tiara on the day, I was very fortunate to be able to chose this gorgeous art deco style bandeau tiara.

“Harry and I had gone to Buckingham Palace to meet with her Majesty the Queen to select one of the options that were there which was an incredibly surreal day as you can imagine.”

The outfits will be exhibited alongside Prince George’s pageboy outfit and Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress.

‘A Royal Wedding: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’ is open now and runs at Windsor Castle until January 19th.

It will then move to the Palace of Holyroodhouse from June 14 to October 6, 2019.

HIGHLIGHTING ANIMAL CONSERVATION

PRINCE WILLIAM’S AFRICAN TOUR

The Duke of Cambridge recently embarked on a solo visit to Africa,

where he took part in a series of engagements embracing his role

as President for charities United For Wildlife and Tusk Trust,

which both protect endangered species on the continent…

PRINCE WILLIAM’S AFRICAN TOUR

During their seven years of married life, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have often embarked on Royal tours together.

But there are certain tours and projects that they keep close to their hearts and therefore often tackle them alone.

For example, the Duchess has been a staunch champion of mental health rights, especially for children, while her husband has followed in his father Prince Charles’ footsteps as a campaigner on behalf of wildlife and the environment.

So it was that Prince William’s working visit to Namibia, Tanzania, and Kenya at the end of September was a solo venture designed to help bring attention to animal conservation efforts in those nations.

The private working trip was made ahead of the 2018 conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade hosted by the UK Government on 11th and 12th October 2018.

It wasn’t designed to be a high profile tour, and the Prince’s schedule was not publicised in advance. But he was to meet key figures in his travels and once more experience the remote beauty of the African landscape first hand.

DEEPLY SADDENEDPrior to embarking on the week-long tour, the Duke of Cambridge set his stall out early, attending an event for the Royal African Society (RAS), where he spoke about his passion for stamping out the illegal wildlife trade.

A patron of RAS since taking over the role from his grandmother in 2016, Prince William told the assembled crowd that “Africa’s wildlife is suffering as well as its people.” He added, “Like so many others, I am deeply saddened by the numbers of elephant, rhino and pangolin who have been illegally slaughtered for their tusks, horns and scales. But the illegal wildlife trade also has a devastating human impact.

“Communities see their tourist livelihoods threatened. And the proceeds of the illegal wildlife trade fund broader criminal networks and threaten security.”

This, he said, is why he remained so committed to doing anything and everything he can to end what he called a “global crime.”

Prince William has been travelling back and forth to Africa since his childhood, first falling in love with the continent alongside his mother, Princess Diana.

“Africa is both the oldest and the youngest continent in the world, being both the birthplace of humankind and the continent with the youngest population,” he said. “My patronage of the Royal African Society is an honour and I will certainly continue to be a passionate advocate for Africa here in the UK.”

POACHING PROBLEMAfter departing Heathrow on Sunday September 23rd on a specially branded plane carrying the message #EndWildlifeCrime, Prince William began his tour with two days in Namibia in southwest Africa, a country distinguished by the Namib Desert along its Atlantic Ocean coast. It is home to diverse wildlife, including a significant cheetah population. Poaching has always been a problem in Namibia but the figures are declining thanks to the hard work of the country’s anti-poaching unit.

Prince William met with Namibia’s Vice President Nangolo Mbumba at the Old State House in the Namibian capital, Windhoek, and after posing for photographers; they held private talks, which included discussions on poaching and climate change.

Just days earlier, Mr. Mbumba gave a speech urging people to take climate change more seriously. The Duke of Cambridge also met other politicians at the start of his trip including Namibia’s Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta, and his deputy, Bernadette Jagger. The Duke of Cambridge and the Vice President were all smiles as they exchanged gifts to mark the first royal visit to Namibia since the Queen’s tour of the country in 1991. Prince William handed over a photograph of his grandmother during her stay in the country while Mr. Mbumba presented his guest with a sculpture of a rhino.

Other events on this leg of the Prince’s trip included a reception at the residence of the British High Com-missioner, Kate Airey, celebrating the ties between the UK and Namibia.

Speaking at the reception, the Prince said that his wife was “immensely jealous” that she was unable to join him on the trip. And he joked, “Particularly as I’m looking forward to a few good, uninterrupted sleeps away from my wonderful children.”

On a more serious note he used the speech to praise Namibia in joining the Commonwealth Clean Oceans Alliance and working to reduce plastics. Prince William’s visit was very much focused on conserva-tion. “This is an issue very close to my heart and I know it is a deep matter of pride to you all,” he said.

Despite his vow to sleep well, the Royal was actually up by 5am the following day and out in the mountainous countryside of the Kunene region, eventually spotting an elusive black rhino. The Prince also took time to meet with those from the Kunene People’s Park Initiative, which provides Namibian communities with greater control and benefits from their wildlife.

He said afterwards: “I was staggered by the beauty and sheer remoteness of this incredible landscape. And I was humbled by the dedication of the rangers who protect the unique population of desert rhino from poachers.

“Whatever approach we take to end wildlife crime, it must be based on evidence of what works on the ground with local communities. This is why I wanted to come to Namibia – to listen and learn.”

PRINCE WILLIAM’S AFRICAN TOUR

SMART MOVESTanzania is home to the African elephants, rhinos and other wildlife population that are facing threats from syndicates of local as well as international poachers, and it was the next stop on the Duke of Cambridge’s African tour.

He arrived there on September 26th, where his engagements included a meeting with the country’s president, John Magufuli and a tour of Dar es Salaam, a major city and commercial port on Tanzania’s Indian Ocean coast, which is one of the busiest ports in Africa.

The Duke also visited Mpingo House, offices of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, where he learned more about the work Tanzania was doing to combat the illegal wildlife trade with support from the UK Government.

His next destination was Mkomazi National Park, a magnificent 3,500 square kilometre national park in Northern Tanzania within sight of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest summit. While in the region, Prince William also visited the College of African Wildlife Management, where he took part in an exercise as part of SMART training at the college being supported by United for Wildlife and implemented by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).

SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) is a multi-pronged approach for maximising the ef-fectiveness of anti-poaching activities using an app for smartphones and tablets that allows rangers and other frontline conservationists to collect, store, communicate, and analyse data on illegal activities, biodiversity, patrol routes, and management actions.

A BRUSH WITH THE MILITARYOn the last leg of his trip, Prince William visited Kenya, the beautiful East African nation where he proposed to the then Kate Middleton back in 2010. There was nothing romantic about this visit though, and while there he stopped in on the Irish Guards, 1st Battalion at the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK).

The second in the line to the throne - who served in the British military from 2006-2013 ending his career as a Royal Air Force rescue helicopter pilot - visited in combat fatigues in his role as Colonel General of the Irish Guards, and upon stepping off a helicopter, the Royal was met by British High Com-missioner to Kenya, Nic Hailey. Then, after meeting with Kenyan Defense Forces, he joined more than 100 soldiers in the bush for military drills.

Prince William seemed to be in his element here, sharing stories and chatting with Irish soldiers during the visit.

“For us today is really about an Irish guards officer visiting the Irish guards in his capacity as colonel of the regiment. He’s always welcome and it’s lovely when he comes to see us,” said Lt. Col

PRINCE WILLIAM’S AFRICAN TOUR

Jonathan Palmer, commander of the 1st Battalion Irish Guards, stationed in Nanyuki, some 200 km from Nairobi.

After this Prince William met with a local soccer team at Kinamba, and got a special surprise while handing out Aston Villa FC jerseys to the team, getting a hug from a player who was named after him. The moment was a break in protocol for Prince William as members of the public are only supposed to shake hands with the Royal Family. But as expected, he responded as warmly as his late mother would have done.

AN IMPASSIONED SPEECHBack home in London on October 11th, the Duke of Cambridge convened the 2018 conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade. The international event, which spans two days, builds on the success of the U.K. summit in 2014, when 42 countries signed a joint declaration to tackle a crime that sees thousands of animals at risk of extinction killed each year.

A video was screened showing him visiting wildlife projects in Tanzania and highlighting conservationist work in Dar es Salaam Port and at Mkomazi National Park. Then Prince William gave an impassioned keynote speech in which he said: “More than a 1,000 rangers have been killed in line of duty over the past decade protecting elephants, rhinos and other endangered animals. But punishment for illegal wildlife trade is still not harsh enough. Lawmakers and judges must make sure the penalties are higher than the rewards,”

But it was not easy to stop organised poachers, he admitted: “They are the same groups who move drugs, people and weapons. These systems are sophisticated, co-ordinated and adaptable and professional. They innovate faster than we can and exploit weaknesses in our system.”

Rather than prioritize illegal wildlife trade over combatting people trafficking and weapons and drugs smuggling, Prince William urged governments to acknowledge the link between the crimes. He said reducing the shipment of drugs and guns across national borders would also reduce wildlife trafficking.

Finally he noted, “My plea to protect this delicate balance between growing human populations and diminishing endangered wildlife is not purely emotional. It makes economic sense. Poaching is an economic crime against ordinary people and their future.

“It is heartbreaking to think that by the time my children, George, Charlotte and Louis, are in their 20s, elephants, rhinos and tigers might well be extinct in the wild. I for one am not willing to look my children in the eye and say that we were the generation that let this happen on our watch.” RL

A founding member of the Carpet Foundation the company produces carpet for Foundation the company produces carpet for both the residential and commercial markets and has won numerous industry awards.

On 1st January 2013, Victoria Carpets was granted a Royal Warrant to Her Majesty The Queen. They have been carpeting the Royal Households for a number of years, and also supplied the red carpet for

the Royal Wedding of Prince William to Catherine Middleton in April 2011.

ENTERPRISING PARTNERSVictoria Carpets Limited was founded in 1895 in the Scottish town of Kirkcaldy, where the company began trading as a small tapestry and printing operation from premises in Victoria Street - hence the distinctive name. The founders were three enterprising partners - George Anton, Alexander Hamilton and John Johnson - who subsequently looked further afield for the development of the business, eventually deciding on Kidderminster, Britain’s premier carpet manufacturing town.

So it was that in 1900 the weaving plant was relocated from Scotland to the Worces-tershire town - the mill being situated on the River Stour, which was used as a source of power. Even then, staff loyalty was at a premium. The story goes that many of a premium. The story goes that many of the company’s employees actually walked the whole distance from Kirkcaldy to Kidderminster in order to keep their jobs when the plant moved!

After the First World War, Victoria Carpets then proceeded to build up its manufacturing capability incorporate

more than 50 looms - though by the 1940’s subsequent changes in fashion saw the end of the company’s production of printed tapestry carpets. There had also been a fundamental change in the managerial structure of the company. In 1920 John Johnson retired and by 1927 Alexander Hamilton had died - so leaving George Anton and his family to manage the business.

During the early 1930’s, Victoria Carpets went on to enjoy rapid growth by virtue of a forward looking marketing policy which saw the company supplying plain Wilton carpet in 40 inch widths to the new motor industry. Among the clients were such prestigious names as Rolls Royce and Bentley. At the same time, the company consolidated its position as a manufacturer of domestic Axminster carpets and proceeded to build up a sizeable plant of Gripper Axminster looms until the advent of the Second World War halted production. Like many other War halted production. Like many other factories, it was used as a munitions plant to support the war effort until 1945.

In 1953, therefore, Victoria Carpets established a new carpet plant in Dandenong, Australia, with the aim of consolidating the parent company’s export trade to that country. The 1950’s also saw the company move into the field of tufted carpets - an American innovation, which subsequently took the UK market by storm.

In 1956, Victoria Carpets duly installed the first of its tufted looms at the Kidderminster factory, so paving the way for major expansion. This led, in 1963, to the construction of a purpose-built factory in nearby Worcester Road. Significantly enough, the same year also saw the

company floated on the Stock Exchange where its shares trade in the ‘Household Goods & Textiles’ sector under the name of Victoria PLC (VCP).

Today it is the largest manufacturer of carpet in the UK and the second largest in Australia, as well as the largest manufacturer of underlay in both countries.

Victoria Carpets Ltd, the proud parent company of Victoria Plc, continue to enjoy a position in the UK market as a highly recognised brand of quality, and as a committed UK manufacturer. The Victoria Group, with a turnover in excess of 400 million, are the leading broad-based flooring group in Europe and Australasia, encompassing 18 manufacturers in all.

THEIR FIRST INTERNATIONAL TOUR TOGETHER

THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF SUSSEX DOWN UNDERPrince Harry and wife Meghan recently embarked on an epic 16-day tour of Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand. We report on the first leg of that tour, seven days touring Australia and the launch of 2018’s Invictus Games…

5353

THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF SUSSEX

P rince Harry and wife Meghan’s first Royal tour together started with the happy news that the newlyweds were expecting their first baby.

If anything this increased the public excitement to see the Duke and Duchess of Sussex travel the world together before they start a family…

Kensington Palace said in a statement: “There is a long history of friendship between the Royal Family and Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand, and their links with the UK are extensive.

“The Duke and Duchess are very much looking forward to experiencing the unique cultures and customs of those four Commonwealth countries and have asked that this tour allow them opportunities to meet as many Australians, Fijians, Tongans, and New Zealanders as possible.”

DAY ONEThe first official day of the Australian tour began with the couple arriving at Admiralty House in Sydney just after 9am, and meeting the Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and his wife Lady Cosgrove - who presented them with a number of little gifts, including a stuffed kangaroo and a pair of Akubra hats.

They then headed off to their first engagement at nearby Taronga Zoo, arriving at about 10.30am to be greeted by New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian. During the visit, the Royals were introduced to a pair of koala joeys named in their honour. The newborn koalas were named ahead of their nuptials in May as an early wedding present from NSW.

The pair were on hand to help open a new research and education facility for students, and meet with conservation scientists before boarding the

The Duke and Duchess were helped off the boat by minders and ushered up a path and into the Opera House through a stage door. They held hands and smiled to crowd, with Meghan pushing her hair out of her face.

After watching a rehearsal from the Bangarra Dance Theatre inside the Opera House, the Duke and Duchess appeared on the steps of the western boardwalk just after 12.30pm and were met by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

Helicopters whirled in the skies and fans waving Australian flags cheered as the pair slowly made their way down a barricaded walkway, surrounded by minders. Exceeding the allotted 15 minutes for the walk, they stopped to chat to Royal fans and accepted flowers, stuffed toys and artwork.

The pair went from the Opera House back to Admiralty House in Kirribilli later in the afternoon, where they joined a reception hosted by the Gover-where they joined a reception hosted by the Gover-where they joined a reception hosted by the Governor-General. Having started the day wearing a cream dress by Australian designer Karen Gee, Meghan changed outfits for the final official event of the couple’s whirlwind day, this time choosing a green Brandon Maxwell pleated button-up shirt dress.

It was here that Prince Harry spoke his first official words on the tour, and it was a typically Australian one.

“G’day your Excellency, ladies and gentlemen, it is obviously great to be back in Australia,” he said.

“Especially even more so this is my wife’s first visit here, so I’m very excited to show her this incredible country of yours. Perhaps not Kangaroo Flats military training area in Darwin though - probably the last time I go there.”

He continued: “We’re both absolutely delighted to be here and really impressed to see you serving beer and tea at an afternoon reception in true Aussie style. Genuinely thank you for the incredibly warm welcome and the chance to meet so many Aussies from all walks of life and we also genuinely couldn’t think a better place to announce the upcoming baby.”

Prince Harry did not give any hints away as to what the sex of the baby was, pausing before saying, “be it a boy or a girl”.

He also said he was grateful to the Australian government for hosting the Invictus Games which the country has embraced with great enthusiasm.

“Australia is of course home to some of the world’s best sporting talent but what you are about to see during these Invictus Games will quite literally astound you,” he said.

“A demonstration of the power of the human spirit, the power of sport to change lives and the power of feeling part of all of this from the stands. There really is something for everyone.”

DAY TWOThe second day of their tour saw Prince Harry and Meghan fly to rural Dubbo in New South Wales, an hour’s flight north-west from Sydney, to find out how locals were coping with two years of almost no rain.

However, the heavens opened for their arrival and one section of their programme at a local school had to be abandoned as thunder and lightning struck.

The couple struggled with flies throughout the day, with Prince Harry even doing a strange swatting dance to shoo them away.

Never afraid to have a bit of fun, the Prince made the playful moves when being introduced to the Royal Flying Doctor Service soon after they arrived at the Dubbo Airport. “The flies are friendly in Dubbo too,” Harry was told before doing his dance and blowing air at the woman introducing them after she told him they were blow flies.

In Dubbo’s Victoria Park where thousands had travelled hours for a “picnic party”, the couple got soaked and Meghan held an umbrella over her husband’s head as he addressed the crowds.

Describing the rain as a “gift”, he praised the resilience of the city and its people following the barren period.

He said: “You people are the salt of the earth, hard working and as tough as they come. I know that life has not been easy. You have just lived through two years of drought.”

To laughter from the crowd, he said: “Despite recent welcome rain, it is going to take a lot more and a long time to recover. You are all the

The Royal couple also visited a farm near Dubbo, where they met the Woodleys, a five generation farming family.

Meghan brought along a loaf of banana bread, packed with chocolate chips and a touch of ginger, which she had cooked the previous night in the kitchen at Sydney’s Admiralty House, the mansion home of the Governor-General of Australia. The cake was three-quarters eaten before the Royal couple had even left. The Duchess also brought a tin of Fortnum and Mason Royal Blend tea.

The youngest member of the Mountain View Farm family, 13-month-old Ruby Carroll, was the star of the show over tea in the garden, where the extended family gathered for a relaxed chat with the Royal couple.

After making a fuss of Ruby, the Duchess spoke to the child’s mother Emily Carroll, 33, about her own pregnancy.

Mrs. Carroll said: “Meghan told me that she’s feeling pretty good so far, which is great, and that she’s running on adrenaline. She said they’re doing 76 engagements in 16 days, with maybe one rest in the middle.”

Earlier in the morning, the Woodley sisters had helped round up their cattle for the Duke and Duchess to feed, enticing them with hay on the back of a pick up truck. The royal couple had gamely seized the heavy buckets of cotton seed to pour onto small piles of hay for the Angus cows and their Angus/Speckle Parks crossbreed calves.

a Dubbo high school for their last engagement in the regional city. A smiling Prince Harry and Meghan were greeted by the Dubbo College Senior Campus principal and 2018 and 2019 school captains.

Meghan joked with school captains who greeted them saying she hoped they didn’t mind standing in the rain. After the official greeting, the couple then briefly parted ways. Prince Harry headed off to meet young men from the Clontarf Foundation and Meghan made her way to the Girls Academy.

Both the Clontarf Foundation and Girls Academy aim to improve the education, life skills, self-esteem and employment prospects of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women. Both programmes are embedded in schools nationwide.

The couple talked to students in the programmes but the poor weather prevented them from heading out to the school oval to watch touch football and netball drills.

DAY THREEOn the third day of their tour Down Under, Prince Harry and Meghan arrived in Melbourne, the Victorian capital, on their way to visit the state’s Governor, and spent time meeting and greeting a crowd of eager monarchists who began gathering near Government House well before dawn. The pair arrived holding hands to meet thousands gathered on the grounds of the city’s Royal Botanic Gardens.

While most of the crowd could hardly contain their excitement when approached by the newlyweds, one girl in particular broke down in happy tears after the Prince pulled her in for a sweet embrace.

“Prince Harry just hugged me,” 19-year-old India Brown said. “It was just such an opportunity and I just went for it. I didn’t expect it to happen because it’s actually against protocol.”

“I said ‘I know it’s against Royal protocol but can I please have a hug?’” Brown recounted. “He hugged me and I burst into tears. He just said ‘Oh you’re going to get me in trouble.’”

The Duchess of Sussex wore a navy dress by Australian designer Dion Lee and matching Manolo suede heels, and she carried a Gucci’s Sylvie mini chain clutch.

There was one thing almost every person in the crowd had in common - an umbrella. Even though the parents-to-be were able to bring drought-break-the parents-to-be were able to bring drought-break-the parents-to-be were able to bring drought-breaking rain to Dubbo, they couldn’t drag the sun to Melbourne.

At a reception with the Governor of Victoria, Linda Dessau, the Royals met with a number of young Victorian innovators behind projects such as a “telepresence robot” which helps hospitalised children attend school.

They then visited Charcoal Lane, an Indigenous social enterprise restaurant, where they dined on chargrilled kangaroo, wild boar and barramundi. Meghan has previously said she tries to eat Vegan

during the week but was clearly making an exception on this trip.

Before the meal the Duke and Duchess visited the kitchen, where executive chef Greg Hampton talked them through a range of unusual herbs and spices and Prince Harry enjoyed a taste of the Tasmanian Pepper, which comes with a kick. The chef suggested that the pregnant Duchess should avoid following Prince Harry’s example. “I don’t want to freak you out,” he said.

After lunch, the Duke and Duchess took a tram to South Melbourne where they were greeted with a giant canvas sign hanging from a balcony congratu-lating Meghan on her pregnancy.

They next stopped off at Albert Park Primary School to meet children involved in environmental projects. While there they watched an Aussie Rules (a contact sport between two teams of eighteen players) display from Victoria’s This Girl Can empowerment campaign. At one point, after some gentle persuasion, the Duchess took the ball and laughed nervously as she gingerly threw it to one of the women, saying” “I’m not sure I did it right.”

The pair then rounded off their day with a trip to the beach, where they heard about the work of the BeachPatrol who work to keep the foreshores clean. Meghan, who had changed into a black Club Monaco dress, and Prince Harry also spoke to lifeguards before making their way back to the airport, and a flight back to Sydney.

DAY FOURIt was back to the beach for the Royals the following day, and this time their destination was Sydney’s famed tourist haven, Bondi Beach, where they were met with screams and cheers from Royal fans.

As always, the Duchess was immaculately turned out, wearing a stripy sundress by Paris-based Australian designer Martin Grant.

The duo were greeted by Grant Trebilco and Sam Schumacher, founders of OneWave, a colourfully dressed local surfing community group dedicated to raising awareness for mental health and well-being in an engaging way.

Meghan and Prince Harry were offered leis (garlands) to spice up their own outfits - although the Prince still joked that he felt “underdressed.” They took part in the “Fluro Friday” session, where people of all ages share their experiences of mental health issues, in an “anti bad vibe circle.”

The couple also had the opportunity to interact with others enjoying yoga, a favourite activity of Meghan’s, and surfing, and Prince Harry even helped wax a surfboard. The couple then met the lifeguard stars of TV show Bondi Rescue including lifeguard Jake Nolan, who noted he had previously met Prince Harry on Bondi Beach.

Mr. Nolan said: “He said that he’d met us before

- he came by the tower. We had a bit of a laugh because last time he was here he was out for a run and he said ‘Last time I was a bit sweaty when I met you’.”

The Royal pair then made a surprise unannounced visit to Macarthur Girls High School in Parramatta. Only the head teacher, her deputy and the groundsman knew about the visit and the whole school erupted in shrieks and cheers as Prince Harry and Meghan walked into the assembly.

They first watched a group of dancers perform to the Frankie Goes To Hollywood version of ‘The Power of Love,’ and then spent time talking to the year nines about the girls’ social justice project and youth empowerment.

They also heard about the NRL’s League in Harmony programme, which aims to unite and empower young people to be advocates of positive change in their communities.

It was then time for the last engagement of the day, and Prince Harry left his new bride behind for obvious reasons as he opened the fourth annual Invictus Games in style by climbing Australia’s iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Dressed in a black shirt with the logo of the sporting event he helped to kick start in 2014, Prince Harry ascended the 134 meter (439 foot) high landmark in beautifully sunny weather, accompanied by Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison and a number of veterans and competitors from the upcoming event.

The Invictus Games are a multi-sport event spe-cifically held for wounded or disabled veterans to participate in, and this is the first time they have been held in Australia, after events in the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Eighteen different countries will be taking part in the 2018 Invictus Games, including Poland for the first time.

DAY FIVE As Saturday October 20th dawned, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex took a moment during their whistle-stop tour of Australia to remember those who had served their country in war. In the morning, the Royal couple attended a ceremony to unveil the renovated Anzac Memorial in Sydney’s Hyde Park. Prince Harry donned the tropical dress of his regiment, the Blues and Royals, with medals, Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order badge and sword, while Meghan wore an Emilia Wickstead dress and Philip Treacy hat.

That evening saw the opening ceremony of the 2018 Invictus Games. 45 years ago to the day, Prince Harry’s grandmother the Queen opened Sydney’s iconic Opera House. Now it was the Prince’s turn to stand beneath the famous sails and open the games, which he created four years ago.

“You are the optimistic generation. You are the

new generation of service and you are the role models to us all.,” he told competitors.

The Duke thanked Australians for welcoming him and wife Meghan (who on this occasion wore a coat by former X-Files star turned fashion designer, Gillian Anderson) and said they were happy to celebrate the news of their “newest addition” with the country.

He then gave a special message to the country.“I have a mission for all of you Aussies. And it’s

not how many shrimps you can put on the barbie,” he joked.

“Our competitors have made it to these games, most of them travelling from many thousands of miles away.

“It’s your job to cheer them on and share their stories. It’s your privilege to watch in the stands or with your friends and families around the television. It’s your responsibility to make sure your children know how amazing these guys and girls really are.”

The crowd gave the Prince a standing ovation and cheered as he left the stage.

The wet weather which had earlier threatened to wash out the event failed to dampen the spirit of athletes who filed into the evening ceremony after severe thunder storms lashed the Harbour and delayed the opening by over an hour.

The spectacular opening ceremony included traditional Aboriginal dancing and performances from Australian favourites like Kate Ceberano and Lee Kernaghan, but it was Magda Szubanski who stole the show.

Giving the Royal couple the full Aussie treatment, the much-loved comedian burst onto the stage dressed in character as her famous Kath & Kim alter ego Sharon Strzelecki.

As attendees who recognised the character laughed and cheered, the comedian joked she had “crossed the Nullarbor” by foot to arrive in the Harbour City to volunteer at this week’s Invictus Games. The ceremony also featured addresses from Governor-general Sir Peter Cosgrove, Prime Minister Scott Morrison and NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

DAY SIXThe Duke and Duchess of Sussex were due to spend Sunday at Invictus Games events in and around Sydney Harbour, but Meghan decided not to join her husband in attending the morning Invictus cycling medal presentation in Sydney’s Domain.

Instead, she chose to rest back at Admiralty House while the Prince handed out medals.

As he left the medal ceremony and walked past the NSW Art Gallery, disappointed onlookers yelled out “Harry, where’s Meghan?”

He told the crowd: “She’s resting at home. Being pregnant takes its toll.”

However, the Duchess was well enough to join her husband and Prime Minister Scott Morrison at his Invictus reception lunch at the Pavilion Restaurant in the Domain, where she also met with children and athletes.

Prince Harry greeted her with a kiss as she emerged from a car driven up to the Pavilion. Mr. Morrison and his family welcomed the pair and the Prince shook hands with the PM’s excited daughters.

Prince Harry was later seen on the back veranda of the restaurant giving a speech, and the couple then set sail in the afternoon, taking to the water in Sydney Harbour to watch the Invictus Games sailing final up close and personal.

The Royals, both wearing the grey, yellow and black Invictus team coloured jacket, chatted animatedly with their fellow sailors aboard the sailboat Hunky Dory.

After taking in the event, the newlyweds arrived back at Admiralty House, the official residence of the Governor-General, hand-in-hand.

And later the 37-year-old mum-to-be showed no sign of her tiredness, looking radiant in a black dress and smiling graciously during the couple’s final public appearance in the city, a function for the Invictus Games Foundation at Government House.

DAY SEVENOn the last day of the Australian leg of the Royal tour Prince Harry spoke of his concern for Meghan’s health and revealed that she would be taking a step back from the limelight.

They flew to Fraser Island in Queensland in the morning, but Meghan did not attend any engagements, resting while Prince Harry met with traditional owners of the land and park rangers.

The Royal couple stepped off the plane together holding hands as Meghan went into one car and Prince Harry went into another. He then boarded a barge to take him to his first few engagements of the day, while Meghan hopped on a tour boat to take her to another area of the island.

Located about 800 miles from Sydney, Fraser Island, also known as K’gari, by the locals, is the largest sand island in the world, and has a total of 206,970 acres of protected forest.

Prince Harry’s first stop was Pile Valley, the only rainforest in the world that grows out of the sand, with towering 50-metre tall Satinay trees. During his first engagement of the day, Prince Harry met the Premier of Queensland and the Traditional Owners of the island, known as the Butchulla people.

He then took part in a traditional Welcome to Country Smoking Ceremony and unveiled a plaque for the dedication of the Forests of K’gari to the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy (a unique network of forest conservation initiatives, which involves all 53 countries of the Commonwealth).

The Royal guest then visited one of Fraser Island’s iconic lakes to meet with local elders and national park rangers to learn all about the island’s natural beauty, rich history, biodiversity and cultural significance.

Next he travelled to the beach to learn about the history of the island’s logging trade, as well as its use as a training base for the Australian Z Special Unit during World War II.

Prince Harry’s final destination was Kingfisher Bay, where he was reunited with Meghan.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex appeared to be in great spirits as they enjoyed a public walkabout along the jetty at the exclusive Kingfisher Bay resort where Meghan had spent her day.

Meghan wore a floaty linen dress by American eco-friendly brand Reformation and sweetly cradled her growing bump as she took in the views across the Kingfisher Jetty.

The parents-to-be were given gifts including flowers and bears during the walkabout. The Duke was taken by a sign reading “Rangas rule”, an Australian slang reference to his ginger hair.

Then it was time to bid farewell to Australia as the couple made their way to Hervey Bay airport for a flight to Fiji, the next stop on their itinerary.

We will bring you full coverage of that, and the remainder of their exciting 16-day tour down under, in the very next issue of Royal Life! RL

PRINCE HARRYCONNECTING WITH THE COUNTRYSIDE

PRINCE CHARLES IN NORTHUMBERLAND

AND SCOTLANDOn the eve of his 70th birthday, the Prince of Wales

embarked on a whirlwind tour of Northumberland with a series of visits to iconic destinations such as Hadrian’s Wall

and Hexham Abbey. He also headed north of the border to collect a very special cask of malt whisky…

75

75ROYAL LIFE

Prince Charles turns 70 on November 14th but he doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. In fact he has been busier than ever of late, and as

usual he packed a great deal into a two-day visit to Northumberland in mid September…

At the start of his tour His Royal Highness was welcomed by the Northumberland National Park Authority (NNPA) to commemorate the official opening of The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre on Hadrian’s Wall.

The Prince was given a guided tour of the award-winning building, which includes an 86-bed Youth Hostel operated by YHA (England and Wales).

The Sill is the UK’s first dedicated National Landscape Discovery Centre and provides a gateway to inspire and enable people of all ages to understand and explore the iconic landscapes, history, culture and heritage of Northumberland.

To mark his visit, The Prince of Wales unveiled a commemorative stone on the centre’s Whin Sill grassland roof and took time to enjoy the iconic view of the Hadrian’s Wall UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Glen Sanderson, NNPA chairman, said: “We were honoured to welcome His Royal Highness to join us in celebrating The Sill and its purpose of connecting people with our wonderful countryside. The Sill provides an important opportunity for people to explore, understand and nurture our landscapes and the people, heritage and wildlife that shape them.”

During the tour, Prince Charles met local school children from St Agnes School in Ryton and Henshaw Primary School in Bardon Mill, along with several Sill project partners and local stakeholders.

The Prince’s next stop was a visit to the farmers’ market in Hexham and then a tour of Hexham Abbey. Hundreds of people lined the Market Place, as the

Prince was welcomed to the town by the Mayor of Hexham.

The heir to the throne visited stalls selling locally produced and sourced items and chatted to traders about their goods. He sampled one or two items and took away a number of Northumberland goodie bags.

Elys Poppy, aka the Sauce Queen, had even made a special HRH delicacy, which she named Royal Blue – a combination of Cropwell Bishop Stilton, white truffle and white wine.

At the abbey, the Prince heard about 84 medieval panel paintings, which are of national significance and about a new charitable group, which will support future care and maintenance of the stunning building.

Rector of Hexham Canon Dagmar Winter said: “It was a huge honour for the whole town to have the Prince of Wales visiting us, and a very special day for Hexham Abbey as we introduced him to the abbey and its remarkable treasures.”

PROTECTING ICONIC SPECIESFollowing Hexham, the busy Royal visited Kirkharle, the birthplace of famed gardener Lancelot Capability Brown, where he attended a reception for beneficia-ries and supporters of the Upper Teesdale Agricul-tural Support Services group, which was marking its 25th anniversary.

Prince Charles concluded his first day with a trip to Kielder Salmon Centre and Hatchery, at Kielder Water and Forest Park.

He was given a tour of the facility, including the new £100,000 visitor centre which was due to open to the public later in the month.

The three-month refurbishment has created a more interactive experience for visitors and allows them to get up close with the salmon and other species the centre aims to protect, including the critically endangered freshwater pearl mussel.

The new visitor centre includes a natural North East river environment aquarium showcasing salmon and other local river species; videos revealing the behind the scenes work at the centre to protect iconic species; a prehistoric salmon fossil dig; a quiz and brass rubbings to unveil interesting information about the salmon; new and improved outside spaces and pearl mussel breeding beds; and a circular salmon walk around the local area.

The Environment Agency’s Richard Bond, who has been manager of Kielder Salmon Centre since 1995, said: “We were absolutely delighted to be able to show the Prince of Wales around our conser-vation centre which aims to protect this incredible, iconic fish.

“We also explained the innovative work we are doing to hand-rear one of the UK’s most endangered species, the freshwater pearl mussel, which is absolutely vital to our river systems and in great decline.

“He was interested to hear about the improvements to the River Tyne, which has gone from a heavily-polluted industrial river to one of the best salmon rivers in the country thanks to improvements to water quality and conservation efforts from ourselves and our partners.”

A REMARKABLE PLACEHis Royal Highness’ first stop on the second day of his tour was Coquetdale in Northumberland National Park, where he learned about the juniper restoration project at the farm.

The Prince planted a juniper bush and Mary Gough, farming and rural enterprise officer at the park, said it was an “absolute honour” to host the Prince of Wales. She said: “It was lovely to see him out in the national park. The Prince has a massive passion for the countryside and conservation with all the good work of the charities he supports. It was wonderful to see that put into action here in Northumberland.”

Prince Charles then was given a guided tour of Moorland Spirit Company’s Hepple Gin distillery, who have helped develop the juniper programme along with Northumberland National Park, Newcastle University and Hepple Whitefield Farm.

The project sees at least 200 seedlings planted on the moors each year, and the company’s aim was to use the juniper at the heart of their gin.

The Prince of Wales sampled a few sips of Hepple Gin in the form of a martini, and owner and managing director Walter Riddell said it was a “thrill” to guide royalty around the distillery. “He is a great supporter of rural businesses and from where we are sometimes it’s difficult to get the message out. He is very at home in this sort of place and was clever and charming.”

Mr. Riddell added: “I think he liked the gin but I think it was a little early in the morning.”

walked from Alnwick Castle, where he had stayed the night, down to the Alnwick Gardens. Flanked by the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, he met with volunteers from the Elderberries drop-in centre.

Then he visited the annual Alnwick Garden Party, the first of which in 2011 was attended by the Queen and Prince Philip.

Around 500 guests from across the county were invited for their efforts as carers or volunteers. The Duchess said: “This is a really special garden party and we’re so grateful to have Your Royal Highness honouring us. We’ve really come here to thank you for everything that you do to make Northumberland such a wonderful place in which to live. Today is all about thanking you and showing you that your good work hasn’t gone unappreciated.”

The Prince of Wales said: “I was very touched to be asked by the Duchess to come to this great event. I know my parents came here a few years ago to the very first one. It has been an enormous pleasure to meet some of you.

“For me coming here to Northumberland, which is such a special county, all I can say is it makes me unbelievably proud just to see what you’re all doing and the way in which you help to keep this county so very special.

“This remarkable place and this garden, of which I’ve been patron now for quite a long time, I know this whole operation here has made a huge difference to the whole area so I also wanted to pay my compliments to the Duchess for what she does.”

A GREAT ACHIEVEMENTIn late September, Prince Charles was out and about again, this time on a visit to Scotland, where he is known as the Duke of Rothesay. The Prince of Wales visited Peterhead in Aberdeen where he attended the official opening ceremony of a new state-of-the-art fish market and described it as “a great achievement.”It replaces the former market at Merchants Quay and is part of Peterhead Port Authority’s £51 million project to redevelop the harbour.

The Prince said he was “very glad” to be able to join everyone in the opening of “this very important new fish market facility”.

He added: “If I may just add my warmest congrat-ulations to all those who played such an important part in building this new development, and above all in delivering it on time and on budget. That I think is a great achievement. This new market I’m sure will make a huge difference to, not only the local economy here in Peterhead, but also more widely in this part of Scotland.”

Prince Charles was back north of the border again in October, on this occasion to visit the Royal Lochnagar Distillery on Royal Deeside to be formally presented with a rare cask of single malt Scotch whisky that was laid down 30 years ago as a gift to him.

THE PRINCE OF WALES – RECENT TOURS

He toured the distillery and met employees, including one who worked at Royal Lochnagar when the cask was filled in 1988, before tasting the whisky.

The cask was originally a gift to His Royal Highness to mark the 140th anniversary of the first royal visit to Royal Lochnagar by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1848. The Prince generously donated the cask to be bottled and sold in aid of his charity, The Prince’s Foundation, and its new project, The Carriage in Ballater, a bistro and tearoom at the village’s restored Old Royal Station.

Diageo director Ewan Andrew, who received the Royal guest at the distillery, said: “We are delighted to have welcomed His Royal Highness and to formally hand over this special cask, which will become the oldest single cask bottling of Royal Lochnagar Scotch whisky. We are particularly pleased that this will support the local community in Royal Deeside, which is so important to Royal Lochnagar and our people who live and work here.’

The Prince’s Foundation has already announced its intention to invest the proceeds in local projects that will provide employment and training opportunities for local people, as well as attracting visitors to the area. Earlier this year, The Prince’s Foundation opened The Carriage, a destination tearoom and bistro that is the latest of The Prince’s Foundation’s projects to help Ballater regain its footing after a fire that destroyed the Old Royal Station in 2015 and flooding in the village later that year. Royal Lochnagar Distillery will also offer support by providing Scotch whisky education to trainees on The Prince’s Foundation’s Get Into Hospitality programme at The Carriage.

While visiting Royal Lochnagar, The Duke of Rothesay was invited to fill and sign a new cask that will now be laid down and matured at the distillery for His Royal Highness’s future charitable activity.

After unveiling a plaque to commemorate the day, His Royal Highness was presented with a 70th birthday gift, which included a set of coasters, made by the cop-persmiths and engineers at Diageo Abercrombie in Alloa using copper from the wash still that would have been in operation at Royal Lochnagar when the whisky was distilled in 1988.

They were accompanied by four glasses made by QEST Johnnie Walker Scholar Daniel Durnin, in a box made of larch from The Duke of Rothesay’s Birkhall estate.

As Prince Charles’ landmark birthday approached, it was reported that the Queen was planning a lavish party to celebrate his special day. A source revealed that hundreds of invites had been sent out for the event, which was due to be held in the State Rooms of Buckingham Palace.

Magazine deadlines mean we can’t bring you all of the details of the Prince’s celebrations, which include an appearance in a TV documentary and the release of an official portrait to mark the big day, but we will catch up with all of that in our very next issue! RL

ROYAL WEDDINGS AT WINDSOR

As Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank become the latest Royal Couple to wed at Windsor. We take a look back

at Windsor’s previous Royal brides and grooms…

87

87ROYAL LIFE

Westminster Abbey may be the venue of choice for a high profile Royal Wedding, but Windsor has proven just as popular

a choice over the years. There have been 16 Royal Weddings at Westminster Abbey since 1100 but the wedding of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank goes into the record books as the 17th Royal Wedding at Windsor (though not all took place within castle grounds) in the last 150 years!

The very first of these took place on March 10, 1863, when Prince Albert married Princess Alexandra of Denmark there. The future Edward VII, known to his family as ‘Bertie’, met Danish Princess Alexandra in 1861 at the Cathedral in Speyer, Germany and proposed on the 9 September 1862. The wedding took place at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, and was witnessed by his mother, Queen Victoria who was seated in the Catherine of Aragon closet and wearing a black mourning dress – her beloved husband, Albert, Prince Consort, had died of typhoid fever in December 1861.

Five of Queen Victoria’s nine children were to be married at Windsor, the next on July 5 1866 when Prince Albert’s younger sister Princess Helena wed Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein in a small ceremony in Windsor’s Private Chapel. Princess Helena was given away by her mother, Queen Victoria, who relieved her black mourning dress with a white cap that draped over her back.

ROYAL WEDDINGS AT WINDSOR

The marriage was a success despite the fact that the groom was 15 years older than the bride, and Princess Helena’s interest in nursing led to her becoming one of the founding members of the British Red Cross.

Next to take a trip to the altar at Windsor was Queen Victoria’s sixth child, Princess Louise, who wed the Marquess of Lorne, heir to the Dukedom of Argyll, on March 21, 1871. On the day of the wedding, the crowd outside St. George’s Chapel was so large that, for the first time, policemen had to form chain barriers to keep control.

The bride, generally regarded as the Queen’s most beautiful daughter, wore a wedding veil of Honiton lace that she designed herself and was escorted into the chapel by her mother and her two eldest brothers – the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Edinburgh. On this occasion it was reported that the crimson rubies and blues of the Garter Star relieved the severe black of Queen Victoria’s mourning dress.

EXPENSIVE GIFTSOn March 13, 1879, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, was married in St. George’s Chapel to Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia. He was Queen Victoria’s seventh child, and eventually served as Governor General of Canada. The couple received a large number of expensive gifts, including a diamond tiara and a pearl and diamond pendant from the Queen.

The following year saw the nuptials of Princess Frederica of Hanover and Luitbert, Von Pawel Rammingen, who were both born in Germany but chose to be married in Windsor on April 24, 1880. After their marriage they lived in an apartment at Hampton Court and were frequent guests of Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle and Osborne House. Princess Federica was involved in numerous charitable activities and after her death in 1926, aged 78, she was buried in the Royal Vault at St. George’s Chapel.

The last of Queen Victoria’s children to marry at Windsor Castle was Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, the monarch’s eighth child and youngest son. His marriage to Princess Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont took place in St. George’s Chapel on April 27, 1882, but Leopold suffered from the blood disorder haemophilia, which led to his death at age thirty, just two years later.

25 years after her parents married at Windsor, Princess Helena’s daughter Princess Marie Louise of Schleswig-Holstein exchanged vows with Prince Aribert of Anhalt on July 6 1891. The groom was the third son of Frederick I, Duke of Anhalt and Princess Antoinette of Saxe-Altenberg.

Princess Alice Mary of Albany, Princess Mary Louise’s cousin, also chose Windsor Castle as her wedding venue when she married Prince Alexander of Teck on February 10, 1904. The bride was the daughter of Prince Leopold and Princess Helena, while the groom was the brother of Princess Mary,

Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), and his bride, Princess Alexandra of Denmark, after their wedding in 1863Below: The marriage of the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, in 1863 to Alexandra of Denmark(Photo by Design Pics Inc/REX/Shutterstock)

later Queen Mary, consort of King George V.In 1905 Queen Victoria’s granddaughter Princess

Margaret of Connaught also followed in the footsteps of her parents, the Duke of Connaught and Princess Louise Margaret, by choosing to marry at Windsor Castle.

She had met her husband-to-be, Prince Gustaf Adolph of Sweden when they were both visiting Egypt, and after marrying on June 15, 1905, they honeymooned in Ireland before settling in Sweden. One of Princess Margaret’s wedding presents was the Connaught tiara, which remains in the Swedish Royal Jewellery Collection today.

A LONG HIATUSThe next Royal Wedding at Windsor was to be the last there for almost 40 years, during which time Britain would suffer the hardship and terrors of two World Wars. The first of these was already underway when Lady Helena Cambridge wed Major John Gibbs on September 2, 1919. Lady Helena was the daughter of Adolphus Cambridge, a great-grandson of King George III, and younger brother of Queen Mary. Adolphus was formerly the Duke of Teck but gave up his German titles in 1917 to become the 1st Marquess of Cambridge.

It wasn’t until December 14, 1957 that wedding bells once more rang out in the grounds of Windsor Castle. On this occasion, it was for the marriage of Anne Abel Smith, the daughter of Princess May of Teck (and great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria), to Scottish politician David Liddell-Grainger.

It was to be almost another 40 years before St.

George’s Chapel hosted its next Royal Wedding. When Lady Helen Windsor married Timothy Taylor on July 18, 1992, she was wearing a dress designed by Catherine Walker inspired by the architecture of the wedding venue. The bride was the daughter of The Duke of Kent, a first cousin of the Queen, and the groom was an art dealer.

A ROYAL DEPARTUREMoving into more modern times, June 19, 1999 saw Prince Edward, the Queen’s youngest child, and Sophie Rhys-Jones choosing St. George’s Chapel as a wedding venue – a departure from the large, formal weddings of his brothers at Westminster Abbey, though of course the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York acted as his supporters during the service. After the ceremony, the newly married couple rode in an open, horse-drawn carriage around the town of Windsor in what has now become something of a tradition. Prince Edward was created The Earl of Wessex on the morning of the ceremony, and the couple was then known as the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

When the Prince of Wales married Lady Diana Spencer on July 29, 1981 at St. Paul’s Cathedral it was one of the biggest Royal Weddings in living history. Sadly, as we all know, things didn’t work out between them and they divorced on August 28, 1996.

The Prince’s engagement to Camilla Parker Bowles was announced on February 10, 2005, and the couple was married on April 9, 2005 in a civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall – such a ceremony was permitted

to take place within the Castle. The Service of Prayer and Dedication that

followed was attended by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, and was led by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Three years later, on May 17, 2008, Peter Phillips, the eldest child of the Princess Royal and the Queen’s first grandson, married Canadian management consultant Autumn Kelly at St. George’s Chapel. The couple became engaged in July 2007 after meeting at the Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2003. Before their marriage Autumn converted from Roman Catholicism to join the Church of England. They are now parents to Savannah and Isla Phillips.

And to bring our history of Windsor weddings up to date we surely don’t have to remind you that on May 19, 2018 the Duke and Duchess of Sussex chose St George’s Chapel as the venue for their wedding, which involved 2,640 members of the public invited to watch from the grounds of Windsor Castle. Following the ceremony, the newlyweds took part in a carriage procession through Windsor town and up the iconic Long Walk.

When will we see another Royal Wedding at Windsor? It possibly depends on Princess Beatrice now, but since she split from her long-time boyfriend Dave Clark in 2016 it seems unlikely she will be following in her sister’s footsteps any day soon! RL

THE DREAM TEAMThe new Duchess of Sussex has hit the ground running in her new

Royal role, and husband Prince Harry has been just as busy with some of his favourite charities…

AN EXTRAORDINARY REIGN CONTINUES

The Queen has ruled for longer than any other Monarch in British history, becoming a much loved and respected figure across

the globe. Her extraordinary reign has seen her travel more widely than any other monarch, undertaking many historic overseas visits. Known for her sense of duty and her devotion to a life of service, she has been an important figurehead for the UK and the Commonwealth during times of enormous social change.

Even at her advanced age, Her Majesty continues to carry out a full programme of engagements, from visits to charities and schools, to hosting visiting Heads of State, to leading the nation in Remembrance and celebratory events - all supported by other members of the Royal Family.

Such an event took place on July 10th when Her Majesty joined other Royals to celebrate 100 years of Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) in a spectacular ceremony that included a huge flypast of around 100 aircraft.

Her appearance came one day after the monarch and her husband, Prince Philip, 97, missed the christening of their sixth great-grandchild, Prince Louis. Both have been scaling back their public and private engagements in recent years.

It was reported that the decision to miss the christening was not made for health reasons and was mutually agreed to by the Queen and Prince Louis’ parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, some time ago.

THE DREAM TEAM

Having joined the ranks of the British monarchy, the former Meghan Markle is settling very nicely into her role as the

Duchess of Sussex. In early June it was revealed that her first official role as a working member of the Royal Family would be in becoming part of the Royal Foundation, the organisation launched in 2011 by Prince Harry and Prince William.

The Foundation’s full name was The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, but Companies House was asked to change it to The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

In fact Meghan started working with the Foundation before her wedding on May 19th. In February she joined Prince William, Catherine and Prince Harry on stage at the first Royal Foundation Forum to update the public on their projects, and she has spoken enthusiastically about the work done by the organisation.

She said: “For me it’s very important to hit the ground running, even if it’s doing it quietly behind the scenes, which is what I’ve focused my energy on thus far.”

In July, the month before her 37th birthday, Meghan was definitely not behind the scenes as she brought Hollywood glamour to an event honouring Nelson Mandela in London.

She looked every inch the superstar in a sleeveless, trench-style dress by Canadian label Nonie teamed with a Mulberry “Clifton” bag, Dior “Essence 70” pumps and white quartz stud earrings by Birks.

Prince Harry wore a grey suit as he attended the free exhibition depicting the life of Mr Mandela

AN EXTRAORDINARY REIGN CONTINUES

AN EXTRAORDINARY REIGN CONTINUES

A TIRELESS MONARCH

As busy as ever at the age of 92, Her Majesty the Queen recently led a spectacular celebration of 100 years of Britain’s Royal Air Force and hosted a private tea at

Windsor Castle for President Donald Trump and his wife Melania – on her day off!

NAME OF FEATUREIn the next issue of ROYAL LIFE2018 has been quite a year for the British Royal

Family, what with two big Royal Weddings, the birth of Prince Louis, and Lena Elizabeth Tindall

to Princess Anne’s daughter Zara Philips, as well as the announcement that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expecting their first child together.

So now we know that 2019 will bring another Royal baby, which is something to get excited about, and there has been much speculation recently that 2019 might also be the year that Her Majesty the Queen finally ends her record-breaking reign and hands the throne to her son, Prince Charles.

We actually doubt that, but we will be reporting on the Prince of Wales’ milestone 70th birthday and wondering what lies ahead for Britain’s longest ever king-in-wait-ing (the record was previously held by William IV, who became king at 64 years and 10 months after his brother George IV died in 1830).

We will also be continuing our exhaustive coverage of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s epic tour Down Under. Print deadlines meant we were unable to bring you the full tour in a single magazine, but having the extra space next time round means we can bring you all of the most spectacular pictures of their time in Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand. After the happy couple return, they will no doubt be spending Christmas at Sandringham with the Queen and the rest of the Royal Family, so expect some delightful pictures from their Christmas morning church gathering that you will be able to see online at our website at www.royallife.com.

So don’t miss the next great issue of Royal Life, the best magazine for fans of the British monarchy. Why not subscribe today?
