This Kids Count data book is the first to examine statewideindicators of the well being of Nevada's children. The statistical portraitis based on 15 indicators of child well being: (1) percent low birth-weightbabies; (2) infant mortality rate; (3) percent of children in poverty; (4)
percent of children in single-parent families; (5) percent of families inpoverty; (6) teen birth rate; (7) unmarried teen birth rate; (8) percent ofstudents who are high school dropouts; (9) percent of teens not in school orworking; (10) child death rate; (11) child abuse and neglect report rate;(12) number of child deaths from abuse; (13) juvenile violent crime arrestrate; (14) teen violent death rate; and (15) teen suicide rate. The reportprovides a demographic profile of Nevada's children and families, comparesNevada to the rest of the nation with regard to the indicators, displaystrends in Nevada over time, and provides a state and county profile for eachindicator. Findings indicate that: The teen birth rate is rising more quicklyin Nevada than nationally; Nevada ranks fiftieth on the immunization rate of2-year-olds; nearly half the pre-schoolage children are not enrolled inpreschools; the percentage of children living in poverty is increasing; andthe infant mortality rate is improving. The juvenile violent crime arrestrate and teen violent death rate in Nevada are increasing. (KB)
