PREFACE

TO BE A NAVAJO, stemed from a class writing project involving stories of thechildren's experience at home and is revised and designed to provide culturallyrelevant and interesting reading material in Navajo for Navajo speaking children. It hopefully will encourage them, and others, to read, instill pride in being aNavajo, and be easily understandable to other Navajo readers.

During classroom instruction, the Dine Bizaad is presented separatelyfrom the secondary language to avoid confusion between the sound system of thenative and the English languages.

About Spring Dn Baa Hane'

There is a beautiful sun coming from the east.

And it rises on the tlee, hogan, horse, house,

and it rises on the boy.

The mountain is just like Ice Cream Hill.

A boy is riding a horse. The horse eats grass.

And there is a dog barking at the boy.

About My Family Shighan Baa Hane'

In the snow, my little sister went to herd

sheep with my brother. My grandmother

is in the hogan looking out the window,

watching to see that the sheep come back.

My mother arid father went to the store to buy

My mother came back from the store and

she said, "Where are the kids?" My

mother went to her grandmother's house

and her grandmother said, "They went to

In Summer Cheryl and I cook for our grand-mother and family. We cook in the shad&house. When my family and I go to ourgrandmother's house, my brother alwaysgoes to the high, high rocks and plays overthere. We call the rocks sidewalks. Overbeside the house are my mother and father'spick ups. I am putting the dishes on the tableto eat from them and we eat good food.Cheryl is making fry bread. When we arefinished making fry bread we call our familyto eat the food. After we wash the dishes,we go out to play with our brothers. We playfollow the leader. This is a story about time

We have two houses and one hogan.

And we have two trees.

The bus is going to school.

And the car is going to the store.

The sun is going up,

The horse is walking on the mountain.

There are three summer schools on the hill.

There is my father's pickup beside the

hogan. That hogan is my grandmother's

hogan and the house, too. My grandmother

has some water. My father came to my

grandmother's house. It is raining outside,

This Is About My Family and In The Summer

I have twelve people in my family. Their name's

are Kee, George(yazhi), Alice, Julia, Pete, Betty,

Jack, George(tso), Elouise, Virgil, Bessie and

Shirley. My mother's name is Mae; my father's

name is George Paulson. My mother has six boys

and six girls. Some of them are not married and

some are married. I am the last one in my family.

When we get home on Friday, we herd the sheep from

in the morning to in the evening and we feed the

little lambs. They have their mother's too, just

like us. Then, when it was Summer School, I tell

my mother and father that I want to go to the Summer

School, so, I can learn how to write and how to be a

good student.
