NAIROBI EAST PRESBYTERY REPORT

TO THE 22ND

GENERAL ASSEMBLY-APRIL 2018

1. PREAMBLE:

The Presbytery is on the eastern side of Nairobi County comprising the larger Embakasi Constituency all the way to Kangundo. The Presbytery Headquarter is at PCEA Kariobangi South grounds. The Presbytery is now 14 years old, having been inaugurated on 2nd February 2004 after the sub-division of the greater Nairobi Presbytery. The Presbytery comprises of 11 Parishes, 1 Nendeni Area and 42 Congregations. Membership is from urban to semi-urban with a population of 25,705. The Presbytery is served by 12 Parochial, 2 Non Parochial and 2 Retired Ministers, 269 active and 46 retired Elders, 14 Evangelists, 3 Youth Coordinators, 13 Secretaries, 4 Accountants/Administrators and 28 Caretakers/Grounds men During the year under review, all Ministers, Elders, Deacons and Church groups have had a cordial relationship and for this reason the Presbytery has been able to overcome many challenges and has realized a tremendous growth both spiritually and numerically.

2. OPERATION FUNDAMENTALS:

(v) Accountants The Presbytery is served by 4 Administrators/Accountants; 1 in the Presbytery

(vi) Secretaries The Presbytery is served by 13 Secretaries, 1 in the Presbytery, 11 in the

Parishes, and 1 in the Dandora Community Centre.

(vii) Caretakers/Grounds men The Presbytery is served by 28 Caretakers and Grounds men in all our

Parishes, 1 in the Presbytery, 27 in the Parishes.

11. LEADERSHIP CAPACITY BUILDING:

(i) Ministers & Spouses – all Parochial, Institutional and Retired Ministers and their spouses attended the Nairobi Region retreat at Kigali, Rwanda from 20th to 24th November 2017.

(ii) Elders – 265 Elders attended an Elders retreat at Ngurndoto Hotel, Arusha,

Tanzania from 21st to 24th June 2017. Members were able to have a forum under which they agreed on various issues regarding the Eldership.

(iii) Evangelists – all Nairobi East evangelists attended a Retreat at Mombasa from

30th August to 2nd September 2017. (iv) Secretaries – all Secretaries in the Presbytery attended a Workshop at Milele

Beach Hotel, Mombasa from 10th to 12th May 2017

(v) Caretakers – All Congregations caretakers attended a consultative workshop at Ruai central Church on 2nd November 2017.

(vi) Pastoral work

All Ministers, Elders and Church groups have been working in harmony and the pastoral work in the whole Presbytery has been progressing well. Holy Communion has been administers frequently in all our congregations and have been able to reach out to the less privileged in our society. The sick in hospitals and homes have been visited.

(vii) Theological Education by Extension (TEE)

Groups of students from our Congregations have graduated with a Higher Diploma in TEE and other classes are going on with Diploma and Higher Diploma classes.

12. SPIRITUAL AND PHYSICAL GROWTH The Presbytery has continued experiencing spiritual and physical growth as highlighted

below:- (i) Spiritual Growth

Presbytery intercessory coordinating Group The intercessory team has continually enhanced spiritual life in

Parishes and Congregations. Deaf Ministry

The deaf ministry at PCEA Kariobangi South has continued with many members joining and has held disability awareness campaign where persons with various disabilities participate in worship service.

Mission Work Mission work has been our key activity in this Presbytery. There

has been tremendous support of Mission work in all our Parishes. Evangelism group has managed to introduce Revival weeks, Keshas, door to door witnessing, worship afternoons and Kigoocho nights which experienced the Spirit of God moving in a mighty way leading 658 people to Christ.

(ii) Physical Growth

The Presbytery Ngundu farm offices were completed and equipped and the Presbytery commenced the goat project that is increasing in numbers.

Building of permanent Sanctuaries is going on in our Parishes and PCEA Njiru Church in Ruai West was dedicated and 3 more were laid the Foundation stone and are working hard to ensure they are completed for dedication by 2018.

Parishes have continued to acquire land such as Kayole and Ruai Central, Ruai west and P.C.E.A Kangundo Nendeni area are in the process of payment of new plots for Tala and Malaa Churches.

13. FINANCIAL SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES The Presbytery has the following SACCO’s and welfare societies in our Parishes. They have continued receiving new members and more are being encouraged on the need to join to boost them financially: -

14. BENCH MARKING The Presbytery divided the Parishes and Nendeni Area into two groups (Tire one & Tire two) according to their membership and financial strength. A bench marking exercise was conducted on the following fields analyzed herewith below and the results were as follows: -

15. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES/SPONSORSHIP

This is involved in assisting the needy and less fortunate in the society through paying school fees, feeding and clothing program among others. In the year under the review the Presbytery gave donations and assisted needy cases as highlighted herewith:-

(i) Board for Social Responsibility (BSR) Donations:- a) Gave over Kshs.342,000/= to assist the needy cases in payment of school fees

from Primary to University level. b) Assisted a physically disabled member from Ruai West with Kshs.220,000/=

towards purchase of a special vehicle for her mobility. c) Gave donations towards the Kajiado disaster coordinated by the head office. d) Assisted Dandora victims who were affected after the elections results were

released during the last General Election. e) The Presbytery intervened to salvage PCEA Tena plots due to disputed

ownership, which were on a verge of being auctioned by donating over Kshs1.5 Million.

(ii) Partnership Board a) The Presbytery is in Partnership with the Nairobi North, Nairobi Central and

the Newton Presbytery (PCUSA). b) PCEA Kayole Parish has continued partnership with Dundee Church, Scotland

and has been having an exchange program where the Parish Minister and 4 Choir members visited Scotland in September 2017 for TEN (10) days.

c) Kayole Parish also has feeding program for destitute children and cater for education of identified cases up to University level.

(iii) Presbyterian Educational Centre (PEC) Soweto, Embakasi This center is situated in Soweto slum of Embakasi. It has a total number of 214 pupils’ in

single stream from baby to class 6. The Centre has been receiving sponsorship from the

Presbytery, Parishes, Congregations, groups and individuals from all over the Presbytery for funding its program.

The Presbytery had a rotational feeding program for all Parishes, Nendeni area and

Presbyterial groups (before restructuring), whereby every month the Presbyterian Educational Centre was visited with donations of foodstuffs, clothing, toiletries and

finances in support of the centre as highlighted herewith:-

(v) PCEA Dandora Community Centre This Centre helps in raising the living standards of the poor within the Center’s area of jurisdiction, through stimulating employment creation. It has a feeding program that caters for needy children who come to school without food for lunch and their Sponsorship program caters for 167 needy children from slum areas around the Centre. It provides essential services to the local community at affordable rates, and conditions, especially at the clinic and operating MPESA services and Jirani agent co-operative. The Centre has continued the Initiation Program for boys in November/December 2017 and the Girls Secondary School is doing well with new students joining every term thus having over 115 students.

16. FINANCE:

Parishes and the Nendeni Area were able to meet Presbytery and Head office cess obligations in time. Presbyterial groups were also able to pay the Head Office, Regional and Presbyterial Cess for year 2016/2017 as tabulated below:-

17. PRESBYTERAL GROUPS & COMMITTEES After the Presbyerial group’s restructuring on July 2017, the Presbytery adhered to the Head office directive and all Church groups were restructured to the Parish level and have continued to actively participate in various activities and mission work as highlighted herewith below:- a. Youth

Commissioned and issued badges to their members.

Held networking engagement with the main objective of uniting and motivating all leaders.

Had sessions for young professionals, Youth summit and Man enough battalion

classes. Organizing and participating in Vocational Bible School programs, holding

seminars, participated in Inter-Parish rallies and get-together parties, prayer

breakfasts, Praise in Worship afternoon, Keshas, talent shows and the annual prayer retreat.

Umoja Parish had a 10 week programme dubbed Mizizi class with 17 youths

graduating in September 2017. All Parishes observed their week in May 2017.

b. Woman’s Guild

Observed the World Day of Prayers in all Parishes. Organized an all ladies rallies, convention and sports day with the aim of

having the ladies come together for fellowship. Held team building which has helped in bonding for all leaders from

congregation’s level. Held leader’s seminar and commissioning in 7 our Parishes in the year under

review. Conducted seminars for class 7 & 8 pupils, secondary and college students

which were very motivating for the teens as they move from one level to the other.

All our Parishes in conjunction with the PCMF held this year’s Alternative Rite of Passage with a total of 114 girls going through the program.

All Parishes observed their week in June 2017.

c. Evangelism Committee Presided over 21 days’ congregational prayers and fasting and spearheaded

prayer sessions in all congregations helping members grow spiritually and standing in the gap for families, the Church and the country at large.

Held crusades, keshas, worship nights, conventions, and door to door evangelism and revival weeks through the support accorded by the Presbytery.

Through its various departments, they have been holding intercessory prayer meetings, praise in worship, discipleship, and follow up meetings and organizing kigoocho nights.

They have observed spiritual growth whereby 658 souls have come to the Lord.

All Parishes observed Nendeni week in September 2017.

d. Christian Education Organized and conducted vocational bible study (VBS) for pupils in April and

August holidays. Held mentorship program for class 8, Secondary and College/University

students. Held seminars for the Youths and TEE program both Diploma and Higher

Diplomas. Held Seminars for members on the role of Christian Education and Pastoral

Program Instruction (PPI). Most Congregations have bookshops stocked with motivational books, Bibles,

hymn books calendars, diaries and other Christian manuals. Parenting seminar and Teen’s mentorship program going on in all our

Parishes. All Parishes observed their week in March 2017.

e. Presbyterian Church Men’s Fellowship (PCMF)

Held Commissioning, Dedication and Admission services in 7 of our Parishes. Have been holding prayer breakfast in most Parishes that help to enhance

bonding among members as well as evangelizing and recruitment of more members to the fellowship.

Has been organizing seminars in conjunction with the Woman’s Guild and Youth to sensitize members on drug abuse and other career guidance to the school leavers.

All our Parishes held this year’s Rite of Passage with a total of 721 boys being initiated.

Facilitated boy child mentorship program as a follow up to the rite of passage.

Many men have been formalizing their wedding which has enabled men to actively participate in Church leadership

f. Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade Have held Physical pillar, inspection and commissioning and mounted Parades

at Parishes and during Presbytery functions. Have Brigade companies, commissioned and Non-commissioned members. Have officers, warrant officers and many children joining the group. Participated in Central Brigade Committee with a good number of officers’

attending. All Parishes observed their week in August 2017.

g. Health Board Committee

Have continued conducting health talks, check-ups for blood sugar, dental and blood pressure in in all our Congregations in the Parishes.

Conducted free screening services especially cancer screening and also teamed up with Government officials on free medical camps at 3 of our Parish.

All Parishes observed their week in October 2017.

h. Church School Have observed a big number of Church school children and teachers joining

the group. Have held commissioning, badge pining ceremonies and parenting seminar for

all members. Participated in Music and Drama festivals up to the National level and

organized class 7 & 8 Seminars with many children attending. Most Parishes have started income generating projects to make work more

effective in the Children’s ministry hence providing snacks for the children during Sunday services.

All Parishes observed their week in December 2017.

i. Justice Peace and Reconciliation Committee (JPRC) Educated members on voter registration and voting during the August/October

2017 elections and organized talks in civic education, general character of a good leader and duties of MCA’s

Worked tirelessly sensitizing members on community policing, peace and security issues.

Enlightening members on constitutional affairs. Career guidance awareness for youths and sensitization forum against alcohol and

drug abuse.

j. Choir Majority of our Congregation Choirs had the Easter cantata. Many are coming up with new songs under the guidance of music directors. Participated in all our Parish and Nendeni Area during services and all

Presbytery events. Conducted Carol services before Christmas in all Congregations. Choirs from most of our congregations have composed songs and released

CDs.

k. Property and Development Committee The installation of electricity in the Presbytery’s Ngundu farm is at advance

levels, which will pave way for the usage of drilled water. The Presbytery through its various Parishes has been able to start and develop

income generating projects such as rental houses, schools, computer colleges, health centers and gymnasiums.

18. ECUMENISM

Umoja Parish had as a tradition held the ecumenical fellowship in partnership with PCEA Unity, PCEA Tena, ACK St. Luke’s and Assumption of Mary Catholic Church Umoja.

The Presbytery embraces Ecumenism and has been participating in National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) at Regional and National levels.

19. STRATEGIC PLAN The Presbytery is in the process of reviewing its Strategic Plan. The key milestones

being:- a) Installation of electricity and commence the usage of drilled water in the Presbytery’s

Ngundu Farm. b) Enhance the Dandora Community Center and Presbyterian Educational Centre (PEC)

management. c) Give the phase lift of Presbyterian Educational Centre (PEC). d) Enhance the organizational capacity among others.

20. ACHIEVEMENTS

Church Worship and Evangelization The Presbytery has achieved spiritual and physical developments as highlighted herewith:

- Formulated and launched the Evangelist Teaching manual. Had a successful restructuring of the Church groups and taking over all the projects

owned by groups. Sub-divided Embakasi Parish that gave birth to Sosian Parish on 20th August 2017. Engaged Church School and Youth Coordinators in 3 of our Parishes thus ensuring

that our young people have people who are able to engage them on spiritual, social and moral issues.

Kayole and Umoja Parishes celebrated 25 and 40 years anniversary respectively. During the celebrations, they visited children’s homes, held medical camps, jubilee weddings and presented gifts and certificates of appreciation to founder members.

Umoja Parish launched a library and a young professional’s forums strengthening various governance structures and increased capacity building for leaders and staff.

Majority of our Parishes have been having encouraging programs such as Ladies, Church School fellowships, Youth Mentorship programs and also joint District fellowships.

Kayole Parish launched Teens services in her two (2) Congregations Kayole, Umoja, Embakasi and Kariobangi South Parishes launched Youth Services

which are doing very well thus increasing membership of Youths in our Churches. Kariobangi South launched the Church Annual Theme from Phillipians 3:10, started

new classes at Kamiti Maximum prison, Industrial Area, Nairobi Medium prison Thika and Meru prisons whereby volunteers visit and share the word with the convicts and the prison officers.

Parishes have been organizing team building for staffs and several training sessions and seminars for Church leaders that greatly empowered the leadership of the Church.

Kariobangi South and Umoja Parishes travelled to the Holy Land (Israel) with many members in attendance and other Parishes planning for more trips in the year 2018.

Our Parishes have been holding special services such as: - Family dinner Home districts and Thanksgiving services.

Vocational Bible School for Church School children program conducted during school holidays targeting the young from 3 to 14 years.

The aged and adult Church School at Umoja Parish for house helps and

guardians. The deaf in Kariobangi South Church with a membership of 126 active

members.

A total of 658 people from all our Congregations came to C hrist; this was through door to door evangelism, Keshas, conventions, crusades, worship afternoons and Kigooco nights.

The Program by the name Man Enough has been going on at Kariobangi South and Umoja Parishes about 200 men have gone through the program and graduated and more are registering for the next program. This helps create awareness of the role of man in the Church and in the society.

Continued meeting the needs of vulnerable people in and out of the Church and sponsoring many needy pupils from primary to post-secondary schools and running a feeding program for destitute children.

We have been able to finish our Cess in good time and payment of 2016/2017 Head office cess is already completed. (See audited report).

Maintaining Partnership with Newton Presbytery USA (PCUSA) and Kayole Parish has continued Partnership with an exchange program with their partners in Dundee, Scotland.

22. FUTURE PLANS Short term

Construction of Presbytery offices. Hold more open-air Crusades, Keshas and door to door evangelism and other outreach

programs. Embracing new membership and using young people in Church leadership and

organizing more seminars for the youths to equip them to fight drug abuse and immoralities.

Enhance Board for Social Responsibility (BSR) to help many emerging cases. Enhance managerial skills for Church projects for proper management. Formulate ways and means of boosting Church groups after restructuring period in the

Parish level. Enhance managerial capacity for Church Academies. Put in place the Human Resource manual to address many emerging issues and staff. Enlighten Church Leaders on corporate governance. Do a well-planned sermon series program to help monitor spiritual growth.

Enhance Children programs and ensure they have essential facilities required. Consolidate all the presbytery Projects through development committees The Presbytery is in the process of recruiting a store keeper cum accountant at

Presbyterian Educational Centre (PEC). Completion and Dedication of Churches that are under construction. Organizing training seminars for leaders, reach out to more members and availing

opportunities for spiritual growth and fellowship. Teaching members on proper tithing and initiating income generating projects to

supplement tithing. Encouraging Church leaders to achieve their target within a time limit and explore

improved ways and means on how the Church must be financially maintained. Strengthen partnership with local and overseas partners. Expanding the feeding program for the orphans and the impoverished children and

sponsor more students at Presbyterian University of East Africa. Long term

Sub - divide the Presbytery into two. Upgrade Kangundo Nendeni Area to be a Parish. Acquire more properties and purchasing land for developments and future extension of

our Parishes. Construct permanent health center and develop commercial plot in Kayole Parish. Opening more congregations and upgrade our Sanctuaries with modern

communication Systems. Construct multipurpose halls in our congregations. Investment in real properties and initiating more income generating projects. Establishing more health outreach programs and expanding and upgrading the

existing clinics. Continuing to sponsor more needy children with Primary and Secondary school

education. Completion of Sanctuaries, office blocks, ablution blocks and perimeter wall for our

Sanctuaries.

23. CONCLUSION We give thanks to the almighty God the Author and the Finisher of our lives for His unlimited

grace, guidance, providence and protection this far. “The Lord is my strength and my shield,

my heart trusts in Him and He helps me, my heart leaps for joy and with my song I praise

Him” Psalms 28:7. We continue to put our trust in God for a brighter future. We most

sincerely appreciate all our Parishes, Nendeni Area, Community Centers, all Church groups and partners for their continued support to the wellbeing of our Presbytery and the entire

Church. We are so grateful to the 21st General Assembly office for your continued support,
