OPPOSITION TO THE BIBLE

“The Word of God has never wanted enemies to oppose, and, if possible, to extirpate it. They have given out a law concerning Scripture, as Pharaoh did the midwives, concerning the Hebrew women’s children, to strangle it in the birth; but God has preserved this blessed Book inviolable to this day. The devil and his agents have been blowing at Scripture light, but could never blow it out; a clear sign that it was lighted from heaven.”

-Thomas Watson

PRESUPPOSITIONS

• There is one Triune God who has chosen to reveal Himself to man.

• All men are sinners.

• God is the one who reveals the truth, through His word, by the Holy Spirit, to those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ.

WHY STUDY THE BIBLE?

Resistance to temptation: I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

-Ps 119:11

Conviction of sin: For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. -Heb 4:12

Enduring truth: The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. -Isa 40:8

WHY STUDY THE BIBLE?

Effective purpose:

For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. -Isa 55:10-11

WHY STUDY THE BIBLE?

Firm foundation:

Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.

- Matt 7:24-27

WHY STUDY THE BIBLE?

God’s wisdom for living:

And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.

- 1 Thess 2:13
