Who are We?

The Doctoral School in Plant Sciences, University Paris-Sud includes research institutes from Paris and the southern suburbs of Paris associated with INRA (Agronomic Institute), the CNRS (National Science Council Basic Research Institute) University Paris-Sud and other Universities. It comprises about 120 PhD students, of which approximately 40% are foreign (other European countries, China, North Africa, India, …). Our students do research in the most challenging areas of plant sciences • genetics, genomics and

bioinformatics• molecular and cellular bio-

logy of plant physiology and development

• plant ecology and adapta-tions to their biotic or abiotic environments

•ecosystem functioning. This Doctoral School is involved in international teaching and training networks, student exchanges and annual scientific meetings with Graduate schools in Plant Sciences from The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and the United Kingdom.

Our graduate students are funded from several sources: Doctoral fellowships are provided by the French ministry of education, the regional council, INRA, CNRS or industry, or by national or international funding bodies. We hold an open compe-tition for French ministry fellowships, open to anyone with a master's degree or equivalent who is motivated to carry out excellent research in plant sciences. To apply you need the agreement and support of a supervisor whose project has been approved by the doctoral school scientific council. Other fellowships are advertised directly by the supervisors.

The Doctoral School wants PhD students to carry out the best thesis possible. It helps with university administrative details and it also provides participants with opportunities to acquire non-scientific knowledge and transferable skills required for a successful career in academia and beyond.

During their thesis, our PhD students are embedded in a lively and internatio-nal community of approx. 700 researchers, potentially the largest consortium of research, teaching and training, focused on plant biology in France, with the highest impact in this field.

Our students are also encouraged to actively participate in the PhD student as-sociation "Doc en Herbe", to teach in the first years of University or to present science to a broad public.

Most of our students achieve a successful career within or outside of academia.
