1901 Logan LaunchHeritage Vessel Restored Elegance

Logan Brothers laid her keel in 1899 and launched her in 1901. Three skin heart kauri construction each skin thickness approx 1 inch thick (25-17mm) the first two skins diagonal and the outer shin

fore and aft making a strong and thanks to Kauri timber pickled in brine ( salt water) she has outlasted generations of owners some of whom have lavished love, care & dollars to keep her in the condition that you see today.

Originally commissioned and built for Archibald Weir of Moeraki she was powered by a 26HP Oil (Diesel) engine a huge amount of power in 1901 and was rigged as a schooner. Her first job in a long carrerr was to tow the fishing boats of Moeraki out to sea at dawn and return them in the evening as the wind often dies down in the South Otago. She subsequently was employed in Dunedin 1902 to 1915 running a Passenger Ferry service out to Broad bay and Porto Bello there was always competition for clientele and many near and actual collisions occurred. During WW1 she was laid up at Porto Bello and after 1920 she was converted to a fishing boat and spent much time working out of Dunedin and other ports finally ending up abandoned on the mud flats of Otago Harbour where she was rescued and rebuilt as a fishing boat. Subsequently from 1986 she was a tourist draw card in Akaroa taking day trippers and overnight voyages to the many bays around Banks Peninsula in survey as a sailing Schooner. Since then she has been revitalised by new enthusiasts who have always been careful to retain the essence of the heritage vessel.

Now powered by a 1950 95Hp Gardner 5L3 diesel mated to a 2UC gearbox she has an appropriate and very reliable heart. Cruising at between 7-8 knots the Gardner is revving at only 750RPM making its unique sound from the dry stack exhause. She will make passages at a leisurely speed that will allow you to enjoy the experience while using an economical 8 Litres per hour (approx) dependent on sea conditions.

In the Deckhouse or Deck Saloon as it may be termed today we are at Moerangi Central, Helm Station, Dining and relaxing area, and aft the fully equipped galley. Heated in inclement weather by a Dickinson diesel heater this is a very good place to be a far cry from the original little box in the original vessel but styles in keeping with the look and feel of the period.

The Galley is compact but has most appliances to hand. A 2 Burner gas stove with Oven and grill, hot and cold pressure fresh water from an 800 litre tank and a large fridge. Plenty of storage and a very good outlook as well as being at the centre of conversation in the Deck Saloon.

Moving forward downstairs we find a private double berth cabin comfortable and spacious where the owner can see the original strong construction of the three skin hull, 200mm x 80mm heart kauri stringers and all.

The ensuite has a modern Raritan Multi flush heads and vanity hand basin all is well appointed. A full size shower is also plumbed in separately. And Opposite is a single berth currently used as a stlorage area.

The aft double berth cabin is huge and there is room here to customise the area as the new owner requires. Again the original construction can be seen strong and secure.

In between the two cabins and under the Deck Saloon is the home of the 5L3 Gardner a slow revving (up to 850 RPM Max) 95 HP with loads of torque required to swing a 4 blade propeller that is around 900mm in diameter giving the vessel an easy cruising speed of 7-8 knots at 750 RPM and approx 8 Litre per hour or under 1 litre per nautical mile imagine travelling from Whangaparoa to Port Fitzroy on Great Barrier Island a distance of 45 nautical miles on approx 45 litres of fuel (approx $70) in 6 hours incredible economy and a relaxing journey with the Auto Pilot in control and Skipper on watch.

The 60 metres of 12mm chain and CQR anchor provide secure attachment to the seabed in all conditions and the samson post enable one to moor to the marina or jettys with rease.

The aft deck has a raised house that accommodates dinghy chocks for the 2.7 RIB and the counter is a pleasant area. High bulwarks provide on board security in a seaway and the sailing mast spars and rig are there for those who wish to set it up.

In summary, this is a unique piece of New Zealand history, a 113 year old heritage classic built by Logan Brothers in their signature triple skin heart kauri restored by and cared for by her several owners over the years and presented with modern equipment and conveniences to make her an easy to use everyday launch. A sea kindly hull powered appropriately and able to ride out most everything the New Zealand Coastal weather can throw at her. Accompanying her is a written history, newspaper and magazine articles that are a slice of Kiwi life.

Truly a unique purchase opportunity, a vessel that has a real heart and a great feel to her.
