In addition , the Getty Center has relied on the contributions of volunteers in its education department. Commonly known as docents, educational volunteers help visitors learn about the many gardens, art exhibits, and educational opportunities at the Getty Center and Getty Villa. Gallery docents lead tours for the general public, including large groups of K-12 students. Similarly, site docents oversee the Family Room and Sketching Gallery and lead tours of the gardens and architecture. Training for gallery docents typically takes place on weekends during the winter months, while site docents usually train on Saturdays during the summer.
