To: Wine and Sparkling Wine Operators in Thailand,

This is to inform you of a new initiative of the Thai – Italian Chamber of Commerce (TICC) in Food and

Beverage area and to request the help we need from you to make it a success. The TICC has created a database for

genuine Italian wines and sparkling wines that have been certified with the DOCG, DOC or IGT marks by Italy which

are available in Thailand. In addition to the wine name, the database indicates the brand name and local distributors

that you can contact to purchase it. For reference, brief descriptions of the DOCG, DOC and IGT marks are available

in Attachment 1.

The initial database content is provided in Attachment 2. It should be noted that this content is far from

being a complete indication of all DOCG, DOC and IGT certified wines available in Thailand. The database will then be

kept up to date by TICC as more certified products become available.

We believe this initiative will be very helpful to Wine and Sparkling Wine operators, both on the supplier side

and the consumer side. The project has been initiated by the TICC within the framework of the Ospitalità Italiana

program. It reflects the suggestions and needs of TICC member companies involved in Ospitalità Italiana. Specifically,

it addresses the need for an easy-to-use tool to put in touch genuine Italian wines buyers, such as restaurants and

bars, with local distributors that offer certified genuine wines.

The number of Italian restaurants in Thailand has been growing very rapidly, particularly in Bangkok, where

there are more than 350 restaurants. The need to differentiate between genuine Italian restaurants and “just-Italian-

inspired” restaurants has grown accordingly.

In addition, interest in genuine Italian wines, previously limited to some expatriates and a few Thais upper-

class, has grown so much that “Italian” wines can be found in most of supermarkets and some convenience stores in

Thailand. Some of these “Italian” products have dubious origin and poor quality. That is why it is important to

protect genuine Italian wines with a certification system, i.e., the DOCG, DOC and IGT system, and a related database

that will be easy to understand and use for wine industry professionals and wine enthusiasts alike.

We would appreciate your indicating to us which additional certified wine and sparkling wine are available in

Thailand through your organization or other distribution channels, so that we may fill out our database. Any

additional suggestion or comment will be welcome.

DOCG, DOC & IGT Italian Wine & Sparkling Wine Certifications

Italian wine labels, just like those from France and Spain, are required by law to show an established set of basic

information (producer name, appellation, vintage, alcohol content and bottle volume). Italy began developing its

official wine classifications in the 1960s, modeled on the French appellation system. The DOC and DOCG categories

were introduced in 1963 (although the latter remain unused until 1982), and the IGT category followed in the early

1990's.

DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) is the highest classification for Italian

wines. It denotes controlled (controllata) production methods and guaranteed (garantita) wine

quality. There are strict rules governing the production of DOCG wines, most obviously the

permitted grape varieties, yield limits, grape ripeness, winemaking procedures and barrel/bottle

maturation. Every DOCG wine is subject to official tasting procedures. To prevent counterfeiting, the bottles have a

numbered government seal across the neck.

DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) is the main tier of Italian wine classification, and

covers almost every traditional Italian wine style. There are around 330 individual DOC titles, each

with a set of laws governing its viticultural zone, permitted grape varieties and wine style. Those

which show consistently high quality earn promotion to DOCG status.

IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) was introduced in 1992, to allow a certain level of freedom to

Italy's winemakers. Prior to 1992, many wines failed to qualify for DOC or DOCG status – not

because they were of low quality, but because they were made from grape varieties (or blends)

not sanctioned under DOC/G laws. The IGT classification focuses on the region of origin, rather

than grape varieties or wine styles.

All of these quality certifications are a valid guarantee for the consumers that want to buy quality wines, which pass

the criteria mentioned above. These certifications are useful also in order to provide protection for the producers

against any imitations and unfair competition. These guidelines are the guarantee of authenticity and quality of

wines.

DOCG, DOC and IGT certifications are issued after a rigorous investigation of the product’s characteristics and the

production method. This assessment involves, at the national level, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry

and at Community level, the Agriculture Committee. The certificated products are recorded in a register managed by

the Commission and made public through the official site.

Italy stands out for the variety and quality of his wines: more than 500 Italian wines have gotten these quality

certification. Italian DOCG, DOC and IGT wines have led Italy to hold a leadership position in the European

Community area. This outstanding number of certified Italian wines is the natural consequence to the peculiarities of

the Italian history and territory, which allowed the creation and maintenance over time of different production

systems and traditions.

The list of Italian wine regions is organized by highest volume of DOCG, DOP & IGT wines distributed in Thailand. TOSCANA: Tuscany is home to some of the world's most notable wine regions. Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano are primarily made with Sangiovese grape whereas the Vernacciagrape is the basis of the white Vernaccia di San Gimignano. When Sangiovese became the required major grape in Chianti during the 1970′s, the other noble grapes (Cab and Merlot) ended up creating a new style of wine: Super Tuscan. As well as being famed for its reds, Tuscany produces some distinguished whites, one of which has achieved DOCG status (Vernaccia di San Gimignano). The region is also home to the eminent dessert wine Vin Santo ('holy wine'), usually comprising Trebbiano grapes which have been air-dried until the start of Holy Week before being made into wine.

VENETO: Veneto is slightly smaller than Italy’s other main wine-producing regions (Piedmont, Tuscany, Lombardy, Puglia and Sicily) yet it generates more wine than any of them. With fruity red Valpolicella complementing its intense Amarone and sweet Recioto counterparts, Veneto is armed with a formidable portfolio of red wines to complement its refreshing whites such as Soave and sparkling Prosecco. Although much of the new vineyard area which supported Veneto’s increased wine output was of questionable viticultural quality, today more than 25% of the region's wine is made and sold under DOC/DOCG titles.

PIEMONTE: in the far north-west of Italy, enjoys an unrivaled seat among the world's very finest wine regions. It is the home of more DOCG wines than any other Italian region, among them such well-known and respected names as Barolo, Barbaresco, and Barbera d’Asti. Although famous for its austere, tannic red wines made from Nebbiolo, Piedmont's greatest success story in the past decade has been sweet, white, sparkling Moscato d’Asti. It is a region which has identified its star grapes, while continuing to experiment with new varieties in the background. Viognier has been trialed by at least one well-respected winery, and the ever-successful Chardonnay is also present in many Piedmont vineyards.

SICILIA: For more than 2500 years Sicily has been a significant center of viticulture in the Mediterranean, although its reputation is not as immaculate and widespread today as it once was. Blessed with consistently bright sunshine and reliably moderate rainfall, the classic Mediterranean climate is ideally suited to the needs of wine-bearing grape vines. Red wines from Sicily are dark, rich and fruit forward because of the warm climate. Nero d’Avola is an awesome red variety that’s worthy of nobility. A large proportion of what remains on the island is used to make Marsala, for which it is joined by the white varieties Grillo and Inzolia.

EMILIA-ROMAGNA: Today, about 15% of wine produced in Emilia-Romagna falls under the region's 20 or so DOC titles, and only a tiny fraction under its two DOCGs (Albana di Romagna and Colli Bolognesi Classico Pignoletto). This is much higher than Italy's prolific southern regions such as Puglia and Sicily, where that figure is closer to 4%, yet much lower than in Veneto, where 25% of all wine is DOC quality or higher. Emilia-Romagna's wine production is divided evenly between whites and reds, the dominant wine varieties being Malvasia and Lambrusco , Trebbiano, Barbera,Bonarda and of course Sangiovese.

FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA: The region's wines stand out noticeably from other Italian wines: they are made using mostly non-traditional grape varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Bianco, but also some quintessentially Italian grapes such as Pinot Grigio and the region's own Picolit. Friuli's signature white grape Friulano creates classic example of these refreshing wines. It was once known as Tocai Friulano but misleading associations with Hungary's prestigious Tokaji wine prompted a change under international law (it is now simply called Tai). Another indigenous grape used to create crisp, lively wines styles is Verduzzo, which is used widely around the region.

LOMBARDIA: Valtellina is within Lombardy, close to Lake Como. Nebbiolo is the red wine produced here but it’s called Chiavennasca; it’s lighter and more ‘pinot’-like than its Piemontese sister. Lombardy also produces some of the best tasting Pinot Noir (they call it Pinot Nero) especially around Oltrepò Pavese. The sparkling wine is called Franciacorta and is made with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes in the same style as Champagne.

TRENTINO-ALTO ADIGE: This region is butted up to the Alps and makes fabulous white wines from Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco, Gewürztraminer and Müller Thurgau (the latter two are sweeter). In Trento, they also produce a sparkling wine made with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that easily rivals the best Champagne.

PUGLIA: The most obviously full-blooded Puglian grapes are Negroamaro and Primitivo, while Verdeca is the only salient example among the whites in this hot, red-dominated region. Primitivo is at home in Manduria and Gioia del Colle, and creates robust, powerful wines known locally as mirr test(hard wine). Negroamaro is more widespread and defines the red wines of the majority of southern Puglia'sDOCs.

ABRUZZO: Montepulciano is the primary red grape in Abruzzo and the wines are called Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. This is a bit confusing because there is also a Vino Nobile di Montepulciano which is a wine from Tuscany made with Sangiovese. Montepulciano (the grape) makes a dark rich wine with high tannins and an herbacious character and is similar to Cabernet Sauvignon. Lacrima is an up-and-coming grape from this area making fruity fun wines that remind me of Syrah.

UMBRIA: Sagrantino is the red grape variety in Umbria that people go crazy over. In Montefalco, you’ll find Sagrantino but there’s also a fair amount of Sangiovese grown in the region. The white grape here is called Grechetto with minerally and zesty qualities similar to Pinot Grigio. The commonly imported white wine from this area is called Orvieto (made with Grechetto, Trebbiano, Malvasia and Chardonnay).

MARCHE: Marche (Mar-kay) is known for their aromatic white wines. Verdicchio is definitely the most common, but Pecorino (the white wine grape, not the cheese) is an extremely special find.

LAZIO: The region’s reputation is mainly based on its white wines, the mainstays being Trebbiano and Malvasia di Candia. Lazio is home of 30 DOC titles, representing a fine collection of wines in which three white DOCs stand out: Castelli Romani (the most important), Frascati (the more renowned and traditional) and Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone (lesser known on international markets).

SARDEGNA: The majority of Sardinian vineyards lie on the western side of the island, which is also where its most location-specific DOCs are found. They line the west coast, running from south to north: Carignano del Sulcis, Vernaccia di Oristano, Malvasia di Bosa and Alghero. Even the large Cagliari DOC, which covers a good proportion of the island's southern half, is strongly biased towards the west coast. The exception to this westerly bias is Vermentino di Gallura, whose catchment area covers the island's north-eastern corner.

BASILICATA: Aglianico is the ‘celebrity’ of the region, the huge range of ‘understudy’ varieties that for years seldom gained attention are now taking centre stage thanks to IGT regulations. There are some very pleasant examples of Moscato, and some superb Malvasia, the best of which come from the Vulture zone and the eastern Bradano Valley. Primitivo, Sangiovese and Montepulciano also do particularly well, as does Bombino Nero.

CAMPANIA: Aglianico is a very high tannin and rustic red wine. Traditionally, it takes about 10 years of aging to be drinkable. Recently Aglianico wines have gained momentum as producers have figured out how to dial back Aglianico’s rugged meaty tannins. That said, there’s nothing more guttural than a 10 year-old traditional Taurasi. Also check out Greco, a refreshing white wine with a bitter almond finish.

MOLISE: finally gained two of its own DOCs, Biferno and Pentro di Isernia, in the 1980s. In 1998, these two DOCs were joined by the newer Molise del Molise DOC, which encompasses the whole region and (unlike its counterparts) also makes sparkling spumante. Several grape varieties reign in this area, including Aglianico, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Falanghina, Montepulciano and the native Tintilia.

CALABRIA: the region is home to 12 DOC titles, although it still lacks a DOCG title. Between them, these 12 cover just 5% of the region's total wine output. Calabria’s most famous wine is Ciro, regrettably the only Calabrian wine to command great respect in the 20th and early 21st centuries. The only other Calabrian wine of any note is sweet, white Greco di Bianco, a dried-grape wine from south-east coast.

VALLE D’AOSTA: The smallest wine region in Italy, in the Alps, producing some Pinot Noir rosé and two regional grapes, Petit Rouge (a red) and Petite Arvine (a white). Aosta is clearly influenced by its neighbors; French is the official second language here, and French grape varieties are just as common here as Italian varieties (Chardonnay and Gamay grow cheek-by-jowl alongside Nebbiolo and Dolcetto).
