starter at guard. She led the team with 67 assists last year and was second in steals with 38 and 3-point baskets made with 30. Nicole Skolnick will join the team after the volleyball season is complete. A four-year, two-sport athlete, Skolnick is a huge rebounding force for the Tigers as she averaged six a game. She recorded 84 rebounds in 14 games, sixth on the team ranking behind fi ve players who played a full season. Joining the Tigers for her senior year is Kalen Carlson who comes to the team after attending Dana College. Carlson was second on the team in points and rebounds per game last year for the Vikings.

The junior class has plenty of varsity experience. Cheryl Braithwait earned All-GPAC honors last year and was the leading scorer from the perimeter with 243 points. Ashley Daily brings a defensive presence and got on a roll late in the season. Kristine Ortmeier returns inside where she averaged 9.4 points and 4.1 rebounds while fi nishing second on the team with 57 assists. Madara Upeniece joined the team in the second half of last year and averaged fi ve points and three rebounds. Andrea Schaaf saw most of her action at the junior varsity level in her fi rst year back from injury. Morgan Dubas will miss this season following an injury in the preseason.

In the sophomore class, fi ve players return that played in at least one varsity game. Savannah Lohmeier averaged three rebounds per game from the point guard position. She had 44 assists. Brittany Luettel played in 25 games and recorded 51 points and will be a versatile player at both guard and forward. Heather Helman, Chelsea Reed and Siteena Ebrahim also saw varsity action last year. Nicole Starns joins the Tigers from Dana College where she played 19 varsity games before an injury cut her season short.

PRESEASON OUTLOOKAlthough the 2010-11 Tigers are coming off a season that was not typical of Doane tradition, the squad has high expectations entering the new year. The combination of returning players and an infl ux of some new talent has Coach Tracee Fairbanks setting high standards for her team.

Three seniors will lead the way for the Tigers this season. Brittany Lurz is a three-year

The Tigers’ schedule will be tough. Doane will face fi ve teams twice during the year that qualifi ed for the NAIA tournament a year ago as well as two others on one occasion. Twelve of the Tigers’ 27 games are against national tournament qualifi ers, including the GPAC opener against defending NAIA champion Northwestern College.

Head Coach Tracee Fairbanks became the Tigers’ head women’s basketball coach in 1999. A 1996 Doane graduate, she currently serves as an assistant professor of mathematics at Doane. She was a guard and captain for the Tigers when they made their fi rst appearance in the Final Four at the NAIA National Tournament. She earned a Master of Education degree from Doane College in 1998.

During Fairbank’s tenure, Doane has had seven All-Americans, 28 Scholar-Athletes, including four in 2003 and 2008 which are the most in Tiger women’s basketball history, and a trip to the NAIA National Tournament in 2005 and 2006.

Fairbanks is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and her efforts as both a coach and teacher have helped Doane rank nationally in the WBCA Academic Top 25 on a consistant basis. The Tigers placed 2nd in the nation with a cumulative GPA of 3.64 in the 2001-02 season and 6th in 2002-03.

Tracee Fairbanks

Head Coach

207-138 Record

Coach Fairbanks strives to install all of the things coaches want in a prominent basketball player: dedication, meeting challenges, teamwork, sportsmanship, and overall competitive spirit. She wants her student-athletes to be prepared on and off the court: not only in being prepared mentally and physically for game situations, but also that they have the overall capacities to prosper in the daily rigors of life off of the court. It is Coach Fairbanks’ aspiration that all her players take something positive from the program and leave a better overall person than when they arrived at Doane.

Tracee and her husband, Jeremy, have two daughters, Brynna and Gracey, and are expecting a third child around tourney time in March 2011.

Rick Schmuecker is in his eighth year as a Tiger assistant. He is in his tenth year at Doane serving in the Sports Information Department.

Prior to Doane, he attended Midland Lutheran College and graduated with a degree in business administration/accounting with a minor in coaching. He served as an undergrad assistant for the women’s program for two years. At MLC, he helped with on-court coaching and fi lm exchange.

At Doane, Schmuecker has served as the guard’s and post’s coach. He works with post position currently after spending four years with the guards. In 2010, he took over the junior varsity program. Shooting fundamentals and defense are two of the main areas that Schmuecker focuses on for the Tiger players. He is in charge of the Tiger’s fi lm exchange and assists in preparing scouting reports on opponents and recruiting, on and off campus.

A member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), he helps organize Doane’s efforts each February to raise awareness for cancer research through The V Foundation and Kay Yow Cancer Research Fund. He also assists in the Doane Volleyball team’s efforts for Dig Pink, raising awareness for breast cancer in October.

Schmuecker is a member of the NAIA-SIDA (Sports Information Director’s Association) and has received numerous awards for Doane publications and Web site content. He is also a member of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Director’s of America), receiving Second Place honors in the Special Event Media Guide category for the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament game program in 2009. He has helped Doane athletes earn fi ve Academic All-American honors in four years as well as several All-District Academic honors.

The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) is an affi liated conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), consisting of 12 private, faith-based colleges and universities in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. Originally founded in 1969 as the Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC), the league retained all six of its charter members - Concordia, Dana, Doane, Hastings, Midland and Nebraska Wesleyan. In 1992, the NIAC added Northwestern and became the Nebraska-Iowa Athletic Conference. Eight years later, Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt, Mount Marty and Sioux Falls joined the conference which became the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) in 2000-2001. Briar Cliff entered the league in 2002-2003 and Morningside became the 13th member starting with the 2003-2004 school year. On June 30, 2010, Dana closed to give the GPAC 12 members.

The GPAC has 17 NAIA National Champions...In 2000-2001 the Northwestern women and men won NAIA Division II National Basketball Championships, while the Doane women shared the outdoor NAIA Track and Field title. 2001-2002 brought two NAIA titles to our league. The Hastings women won the NAIA Division II National Basketball title, while Doane’s women won the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championship outright. In 2002-2003 the GPAC won two more National Championships with the Hastings women repeating as NAIA Division II National Basketball Champions (defeating GPAC foe Dakota Wesleyan in the title game), and the Northwestern men winning the NAIA Division II crown for the second time in three years. The Morningside women’s basketball teams won the 2004 and 2005 titles in front of the hometown Sioux City fans at the Tyson Events Center. In 2006 the Hastings women’s basketball team won their third basketball title in fi ve years. The GPAC won six straight NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championships from 2001 to 2006. Also, in 2006 Dana College claimed the NAIA National Wrestling Championship, while the Nebraska Wesleyan’s men’s golf team won the NCAA III National Title. In the fall of 2006 when Sioux Falls won the Football National Championship in Savannah, Tennessee. The Northwestern women’s basketball team capped a 35-2 season in winning the 2008 NAIA Division II National Championship. The University of Sioux Falls won their second NAIA Football Title in three years by claiming the 2008 National Championship in Rome, Georgia, on December 20. In March of 2009 the Morningside Women’s Basketball team capped a perfect 38-0 season by claiming the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship (defeating GPAC foe Hastings in the title game). On December 19, 2009, the Sioux Falls Football Team Claimed Back-to-Back National Titles and won their fourth overall National Title while capping a 15-0 season in Rome, Georgia. In March of 2010 Northwestern’s women’s basketball team won the NAIA Division II National Championship. The GPAC has now won nine of the last ten NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Championships! The GPAC has many individual NAIA and NCAA Division III National Champions in track and fi eld (Nebraska Wesleyan is dual member of both the NAIA and NCAA Division III).

Corey Westra of Sioux City, Iowa, is the GPAC Commissioner and Information Director.

DOANE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HISTORY

Doane women’s basketball has a long history but the fi rst organized games for intercollegiate varsity action are recorded in 1972-73 when women’s athletics was introduced to Doane College. The Tigers went 1-6 in their fi rst season of competition and it wasn’t until the fi nal game of the year that they picked up a win, a 25-20 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan.

The fi rst 15 years of women’s basketball saw the Tigers fi nish no better than three games over .500 (12-9, 1981-82). Gene Steinmeyer took over the program for the 1984-85 season but saw some tough times in his fi rst three years. However, in his fourth year as Tiger head coach, the program took a complete 180-degree turn. Finishing 10-21 the season before, the Tigers posted a 24-9 record and won the NIAC title. From that moment on, Doane women’s basketball was on the national map.

Steinmeyer’s teams won eight conference titles in an 11-year period and qualifi ed for the NAIA National Tournament seven times. A school record of 31 wins was set in the 1995-96 season, one of three straight years that the Tigers advanced to the Final Four. Steinmeyer ended his coaching tenure at Doane following the 1998-99 season and is the all-time winningest coach with 360 wins and a .719 win percentage.

Tracee (Uldrich) Fairbanks took over the program, replacing her former coach. Fairbanks’ teams have excelled on the court and in the classroom. With fi ve 20-win seasons and numerous Top 25 fi nal rankings, the Tigers have excelled academically with rankings in the WBCA Academic Top 25, including a second place fi nish.

In total, Doane has advanced to nine NAIA National Tournaments and hold an all-time mark of 639-400. NAIA All-American honors have been handed out on 20 occasions as well as 35 NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.

When Thomas Doane, chief civil engineer of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, began building the railroad across Nebraska in the late 1800s, his goal was not only to enhance civilized life for the pioneers, but also to build a liberal arts college on the Nebraska frontier. He and the Congregationalists soon chose the town of Crete, overlooking the Big Blue River, for a college on the plains. The college maintains historical ties with the United Church of Christ. Thomas Doane’s vision of a college in the tradition of Harvard and Yale has become a reality. Fully established in 1872, Doane is Nebraska’s fi rst private liberal arts and sciences college. From the college’s formative years under the tutelage of fi rst president David Brainerd Perry to the current 11th president, Jonathan Brand, the college continues its purpose to educate students to serve and lead in the state, the nation and the world. The Crete campus serves approximately 1,000 residential students on 300 scenic acres. Designated a state arboretum, the once treeless landscape now boasts more than 100 varieties of trees, numerous plantings, ponds, and swans. Additional highlights include the four-year graduation guarantee for students…graduate within four years or the college will pay for a fi fth year of course work. A travel scholarship for students provides opportunities to travel on college-sponsored trips in the U.S. or abroad. Doane College was the fi rst institution in the nation to initiate a warranty for its education graduates to hiring school districts, and guarantees teacher education graduates a position. Doane College also offers three graduate degree programs, including the Master of Arts in Management (MAM), Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC), and Master of Education (MED) in Curriculum and Instruction or Educational Leadership.

Doane Mission Statement Doane College, a comprehensive college in the liberal arts tradition, offers an academic curriculum to stimulate inquiry, enhance knowledge, and promote examination and development of values and perspectives through majors and the liberal arts. The college prepares students by offering academic and co-curricular opportunities to develop abilities and skills needed in and out of the workplace. Doane also provides opportunities for students, faculty and staff to develop and practice leadership skills. Doane College is a private, independent, coeducational college serving both traditional and nontraditional students. The college continues its historical relationship with the United Church of Christ and its tradition of promoting free inquiry. The college offers instruction in the liberal arts and related professional and pre-professional areas leading to the bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, and master’s degrees. At both the undergraduate and graduate levels, Doane is committed to student-centered education characterized by close student-teacher relationships. The college serves students through residential campus programs, off-campus programs, and graduate programs. Doane seeks to attract students, faculty, and staff with diverse geographic, racial, ethnic, religious, economic, and cultural backgrounds. As the college pursues its mission, students will demonstrate the ability: I. To read, listen, write, and speak effectively. II. To think critically. III. To integrate theories with practice. IV. To collect and process information by selecting methods to improve understanding and solve problems. V. To use problem-solving skills effectively. VI. To work with others. VII. To act ethically and to lead responsibly.

DOANE ACADEMIC SUPPORTThe transition from high school to college level academics is a dramatic one, but it need not be traumatic if students make use of the resources Doane College provides through the Academic Support Center (ASC).

In contrast to many students’ high school course experiences, most college level courses demand a whole new study and exam preparation strategy. Most college professors fully expect that students will complete the assigned textbook readings and come to class prepared to ask questions and engage in discussion generated by the reading assignment. Professors’ lectures complement and supplement the required reading assignment, but they are not intended to substitute for required readings.

Likewise, students must attend lectures and labs if they are to gain the full benefi t of their educational opportunity. Completing the assigned readings, attending lectures and labs, being able to record accurate reading/lecture notes and reviewing their notes regularly in preparation for exams and fi nals are all critical to any student’s academic success.

Doane’s Academic Support Center (ASC) provides academic assistance, training and intervention to students who wish to improve their academic performance. The ASC consists of two separate programs: The Doane Learning Center (DLC) and Doane Student Support Services (DSS). Both programs are housed in the Student Services area on the lower level of Perry Campus Center.

The Doane Learning Center is a walk-in center for students wanting to raise their grades or improve their study skills. The program provides academic counseling, peer tutoring, and writing assistance.

Doane Student Support Services (DSS) is a TRIO program, federally funded through the United States Department of Education. It assists eligible students in reaching their academic and personal goals through a variety of activities. Notifi cation of eligibility is sent to new students in the fi rst few weeks of the fall and spring terms and is dependent on American citizenship AND family income level, (or) student disability status or both custodial parents/guardians having less than a four-year degree.

The Doane College athletic facilities continue to change and improve each year.

The George & Sally Haddix Center opened in Fall 2010 and is the home for Doane volleyball, basketball and dance/cheerleading. Now the center point between all athletic facilities, the Haddix Center also hosts the coaches’ offi ces, weight room and fi tness center. You can fi nd interactive computers in the front lobby that will introduce Doane Hall-of-Fame and Honor D receipents. Doane Athletic Club (DAC) memberships allow all members to utilize the weight room and fi tness center as well.

Located on the northeast end of the Doane campus, Fuhrer Field House is home to Tiger indoor track & fi eld. The Field House is also used for early season practices for baseball, softball, and tennis and will serve as an alternate practice facility for volleyball and basketball following the completion of the Haddix Center. The renovation of the athletic training room is the most recent improvement to the facility. Renovations are scheduled to increase the track size to 200 meters while redesigning the layout for tennis courts, batting cages and seating.

Simon Field was constructed in 1929 following a generous gift from G. Eli Simon, a Cambridge, Nebraska, attorney and father of a graduating senior. Simon Field is located on the north side of the campus and is home to the football and soccer teams. Lauritsen Track surrounds the fi eld and is home to the track & fi eld teams.

Field turf was installed in 2000. As part of the renovation, a new outdoor, polyurethane track was also installed. Both the fi eld and track are used by the Crete community and Crete High School. The press box was wired with Internet capabilities in the summer of 2004.

Located on the eastern end of campus, The Den is the alternate home to Doane soccer. The fi rst home of Doane Soccer, The Den is a grass surface used mostly for practices.

The Jose M. & Elizabeth Ledon Ballfi eld Complex opened in March 2007. The complex is located on the east end of campus and is home to Tiger baseball and softball. The facility includes batting cages, a two-story press box and concession stand.

DOANE SPORTS INFORMATIONThe Doane College Sports Information Offi ce is always interested in helping members of the media in their coverage of Tiger Athletics. Athlete features and interviews, credential request, photographs and statistics are available through the sports information offi ce.

Rick Schmuecker joined the Tiger team in August 2001 as Assistant Sports Information Director, following four years as a student at Midland Lutheran College. In May 2006, he was named head of the Sports Information Department by Athletic Director Greg Heier.

At Doane, Rick is seen at all home athletic events, usually in the designated media areas, either keep stats, broadcasting or both. He has received publication honors by the NAIA-SIDA in football and soccer as well as with the Doane athletic Web site. In June 2008, he received 2nd Place honors for the women’s soccer media guide, the highest honor received by himself or Doane through the NAIA-SIDA contests. In 2009, he received 2nd Place in CoSIDA’s Special Events publication for the volleyball post-season game program.

In Fall 2010, Dave Ziola became Assistant Sports Information Director. An assistant cross country and track & fi eld coach, Ziola will specialize in those two sports for the offi ce. He also teaches in the physical education department at Doane.

However, the work that is done could not be completely accomplished without several student workers who also help out with game days and offi ce work. These students are responsible for helping with statistics, running game clocks and setup for games. Their time and commitment is greatly appreciated.

Students working for the sports information offi ce in 2010-11 are: Kelly Baer, Cheryl Braithwait, Ashley Daily, Mindy Dymacek, Kelsie Grgurich, Veronica LeDuc, Jacy Ludwig, Jordan Ludwig, Brittany Luettel, Brittany Lurz, Morgan Dubas, Lisa Lord, Megan Meduna, Cassie Reicks, Brooke Sampson and Madara Upeneice.
