All courses at York St John have a fee applied to them and for most undergraduate programmes these fee will be £3,375 for the academic year 2011/2012.

If you wish to you can decide to self fund this and you can pay the fees in an one-off payment upfront or in three instalments in November, January and May.

If you cannot afford to self fund your study then you may need to apply for a loan to cover the costs of fees. A tuition fee loan will cover the entire cost of the course and it is awarded to everyone as it is not assessed against household income.

If you are an English student you can apply through Student Finance England for a Loan. If you are not an English student then please click here for further information.

Tuition fee loans are paid directly to York St John and the amount you borrow is then added to your overall loan which you start paying back once you are earning over £15,00 per year.

Everyone is entitled to some help through Student Loans but the amount you receive is dependent upon your income.

Help with living costs can be spilt into two categories – maintenance grant and maintenance loan.

BUDGETING

Click to continue or click here to return to contents page.

If you wish to exit and return to desktop click here.

It is very important that you produce a budget before coming to University as it will help you be able to make key decisions such as where to live etc.

They key to budgeting is to try and be as honest as you can be with your figures as your budget will only be as good as the information you put in.

Your budget is simply a calculation of income minus expenditure. The table below shows the what can count as income and expenditure but it is by no means exhaustive.

Income Expenditure

Maintenance Grant Rent/Accommodation

Maintenance Loan Course costs (books etc)

Wages Food and Drink

Parental Contribution Bills

Socialising

If your budget shows that your expenditure is more that your income you have a deficit. If this is the case then you need to look at where you can save on expenditure or increase income.

If you need to look at saving money check out websites like moneysavingexpert.com for hints and tips. Also keep a look out for University events and where you see our Money Doctors you know you may be able to save some money.

All the information on the previous slides has been relevant to the academic year 2011/12.

In the academic year 2012/13 the amount of money Universities will receive is to be reduced as part of the Governments saving measures.

The consequence of this is tuition fees will have to rise.

We do not yet know what the tuition fees for 2012/13 will be.

To get the most up to date information for the academic year 2012/13 keep checking our website as we update this as soon as any developments occur.
