Codes of Practice give detailed practical guidance on how to comply with requirementsand obligations under work health and safety laws.

Safe Work Australia’s Code of Practice for Excavation details how to safely workaround essential services such as pipes, cables or other assets located underground.Within the Code of Practice is Regulation 304.

Regulation 304: Before commencing excavation work, a person conducting abusiness or undertaking with management or control of the workplace must takeall reasonable steps to obtain current underground services information thatrelates to the workplace and areas adjacent to the workplace. The person mustprovide this information to all persons carrying out the excavation work andensure it is readily available for inspection under the WHS Act until theexcavation is completed or, if there is a notifiable incident relating to theexcavation, 2 years after the incident occurs.

SA Water Corrections Address

SA Water now have a plans correction address available to excavators to report anyplan inaccuracies.

On the cover letter that is sent out with SA Water’s Dial Before You Dig plans, you willfind the following:

‘For further enquiries or assistance with interpretation of plans and search content, orto report any obvious errors with the data provided, please contact our Dial Before YouDig support team via email dialbeforeyoudig@sawater.com.au’.

Mobile Web Service

The Dial Before You Dig Mobile Web Service is simply our main websiteconfigured to fit on a smaller (mobile) device. So long as your device istouch screen and has internet access, the Mobile Web Service is usableon mobile smartphone and tablet devices, regardless of operatingsystem or device type.

Users accessing the 1100.com.au site from any mobile device willautomatically transfer to the mobile version of the website, so there is no need todownload a separate app for access. The current Dial Before You Dig iPhone app willcontinue to be supported for users with iPhones and iPads.

These mobile solutions mean you can now use the GPS capabilities of your phone todetermine the worksite location when lodging your enquiry from a mobile device. This isparticularly useful when working in regional areas to help pinpoint your exact location. 

Note: You must be a registered user of DBYD to use the mobile service. Users cannot register on the mobile device,

so you will need to login on a desktop device or contact the Call Centre if not already registered.

Do you regularly promote the 4 P's?

Everyone has a Duty of Care around underground pipes and cables when digging orexcavating. There is an easy way to ensure you take all the right steps in making yourexcavation project a success. Just follow the 4 P’s of Safe Excavation.

PlanPlan your job. Use the Dial Before You Dig service at least two business days beforeyour job is due to begin to ensure you have the correct information you need to carryout a safe project.

PotholePotholing (hand digging) is a method to assist in establishing the exact location of allunderground infrastructure.

ProtectProtecting and supporting the exposed infrastructure is the responsibility of theexavator. Always erect safety barriers in areas at risk to protect undergroundnetworks.

ProceedBUT only when you have planned, potholed and put the protective measures in place.
