Doing the Dewey with our friendsThis presentation is geared towards upper elementary through middle schools students in grades 4-8. This presentation is designed to be an introduction to who Melvil Dewey is and his creation of the Dewey Decimal System. Through this presentation the students will have the opportunity to navigate and explore the power point on their own, allowing for discovery and practice at each students individual pace. Each student will participate in a Pre and Post test to determine their level of understanding.This presentation was presented to a group of teachers kids ranging from 5th through 8th grades in an after school setting. On average the students scored 80% on the pre-test. Their scores improved on average to 90% after the pre-test. The students reported that they enjoyed being able to explore and visit the links on their own and seemed to enjoy learning about the Dewey Decimal System.2Pre TestPlease record your answers on the score sheet provided.

This is Melvil DeweyClick here to learn more about Mr. DeweyMelvil Dewey (1851-1931) was the youngest of five children and was born in a small town in New York. As a child, he loved to organize and sort things and was very good at math. He invented the Dewey decimal classification system for books in 1876 which libraries all around the world now use to organize their books.

4What is the Dewey Decimal Classification SystemThe Dewey Decimal Classification System is a system that organizes nonfiction books by subject matter. Books are assigned numbers from 001 to 999 and are arranged on the shelves by these numbers. This number is referred to as the books call number. The Dewey Decimal Classification System is the most widely used classification system in the world. Libraries in more than 135 countries use the Dewey Decimal Classification System and it has been translated into over thirty languages.
