Human Activities and Global Warming

Humans had first affected global warming some eight thousand years ago with the start of agriculture. Due to the clearing of the forests for agriculture, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increased drastically. Since the industrial revolution, humankind also contributes to the increase of carbon dioxide by the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas, petrol) to obtain energy. For instance, carbon dioxide is released by power plants, factories, and cars.

•List at least 2 human activities that increase the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

• Agriculture: deforestation, burning the forest

• Industrialization: Burning fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, coal) in power plants, factories, cars, etc.

The Effects of Global Warming

Increasing global temperatures is melting the ice cap and rising the sea levels, which will cause the flooding of coastal areas. Also global warming is changing the climate: it has changed the amount and patterns of precipitation, and increased the frequency, duration, and intensity of other extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts, heat waves, hurricanes and tornadoes.

Other effects of global warming include loss of biodiversity, endanger and extinction of species, and migration of species. For instance, diseases like malaria are returning into areas where they have been extinguished earlier.

5. List at least 4 effects of global warming.

Global Warming Solutions

We have the practical solutions at hand to dramatically reduce our carbon emissions and slow the pace of global warming.•Reduce CO2 emissions. We must significantly reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emissions we are putting into the atmosphere.

a) Expand the use of renewable energy and transform our energy system to one that is cleaner and less dependent on coal and other fossil fuels.

b) Increase vehicle fuel efficiency, support public transportation and car pooling.c) Place limits on the amount of carbon that polluters are allowed to emit.d) Build a clean energy economy by investing in efficient energy technologies, such as solar energy.

•Stop DeforestationReducing tropical deforestation can significantly lower global warming emissions and — together with efforts to reduce emissions from fossil fuels — plays an integral role in a comprehensive long-term solution to global warming.

6. List at least 2 actions to effectively stop Global Warming?

1. Reduce the CO2 emissions to atmosphere a) Reduce the use of fossil fuelsb) Use of clean alternative energy sources i.e. solar energyc) Increase vehicle fuel efficiency, support public transportation and car pooling.

2. Reforestation: photosynthesis removes CO2 from the atmosphere

1) Some scientists are urging that immediate action be taken to stop activities that contribute to global warming.  Discuss the effects of global warming on the environment and describe some human activities that may contribute to it. Your answer must include: (1) an explanation of what is meant by the term "global warming"(2) one human activity that is thought to be a major contributor to global warming and an explanation of how it may contribute to the problem(3) one negative effect of global warming if it continues for many years

Objective: Understand Causes, Effects and Solutions of Global Warming?Key Words:

1) Global warming is the rise in Earth’s average temperature over time.

2) One human activity that contributes to global warming is:• burning fossil fuels in power plants, factories and cars.• deforestation

3) One negative effect of global warming is:• Melting of polar ice caps will cause major flooding• Climate change will cause desertification, droughts, hurricanes, and tornados.• Global warming will cause some species will become endangered or extinct

2) State one environmental impact of reduced funding for public transportation (trains, city buses, school buses, etc.) on future generations. Explain your answer.

Reduced funding for public transportation will increase the amount of cars on the roads, therefore, CO2 emissions to the air will increase, then, Earth’s average temperature will increase.

In conclusion, it will contribute to Global Warming.

3. To reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, it has been suggested that we take the following two actions:

a) Increase the number of trees through reforestation, OR

b) Protect animals so that their numbers increase.

Using one or more complete sentences:

(a) For each statement, identify whether or not the action will contribute to reducing the CO2 level of the atmosphere

(b) For each statement, explain why the action will have the effect described in part (a) on the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere..

(a) Reforestation will reduce atmospheric CO2 because plants take in CO2 from the atmosphere by photosynthesis.

(b) The increase of animal population will increase atmospheric CO2 because animals produce CO2 by cell respiration.

4. Scientists have discovered a link between deforestation and global warming. Write a paragraph that explain what is meant by the terms deforestation and global warming, then describe the connection between the two.

Trees can use carbon dioxide during photosynthesis to make carbohydrates. The carbohydrates are used to make new cells and tissues. These tissues last for the life of the tree, keeping the carbon dioxide “stored” for a long time.

Deforestation is the removal of large numbers of trees from a forested area.

Global warming is the rise in Earth’s average temperature over time.

Deforestation increases global warming because CO2 remains in the air and it is not removed by photosynthesis.

Page 19: Do Now: What do you already know about global warming? Objective: Understand Causes, Effects and Solutions of Global Warming Key Words: concentration,

Two negative effects of global warming are

•Sea level may rise flooding coastal areas and killing many animals, plants, and humans.

•Climate change: It will become hotter and some organisms will not be able to live in the increased heat.

•Migration: Some organisms will not be able to live in parts of the world where they now live due to climate changes or warming.

6) The reading passage suggests that scientists believe there to be a relationship between an increase in atmospheric CO2 and global warming.

Using one or more complete sentences, state two specific potential negative effects of such a warming trend on the living environment of Earth. Be sure to specify how each of the effects you suggest will have a negative effect on the environment.
