DNMade Made ProjectRetail and Interior Design : Veille et Dissertation Methodology Project DN Made. Session 1.

Before carrying out any research…You have to know what it is that you are trying to find out. Locating and Defining the Issues or Problems you want to work through. This step focuses on uncovering the nature and boundaries of a situation or question.

REMEMBER, THERE IS NO RESEARCH TO DO WITHOUT A SUBJECT, A PROBLEM OR AN OPPORTUNITY.

1. Research MethodThe strategy employed in the collection of data or evidence for analysis to uncover new information or arrive as a better understanding of your subject.

IKEA COOK THIS PAGE FIND THE RIGHT INGREDIENTS AND PLACE ON PAGE.

DATA COLLECTION

The process of gathering, measuring and checking information and having a critical eye. Accurate data collection is primordial. The process of sifting through all research and finding the pertinent elements. Analysing the data correctly is very important. The crossing of information in different types of data to find designer “insights”. This is the most important part of gathering data. This is where your data will lead to innovation. These three elements will allow you to fill gaps and prove hypotheses if you developed them.

2. Research PlanAn outline of the how the data is going to be structured and undertaken, as well as the general plan for collecting, analysing and evaluating data.Creative tools can be used, such as Mind Maps, graphic plans to show the overall big picture.

IKEA COOK THIS PAGE - COOKING THE MEAL ON PARCHMENT PAPER

For this Dissertation, data collection is a study of existing academic literature/market data/statistics from a variety of sources.

Which areas are the most pertinent for you to research? What have others written about your topic? What theories have been advanced or developed by other academics/researchers?What approach/findings have been taken/used by other researchers? The areas of agreement and disagreement by analysing different viewpoints. And, once finished, if there are gaps that you can fill through your own proposed research (see Research Methodology).

PLEASE CREATE YOUR OWN MIND-MAP FOR NEXT TIME.

3. Research Design PlanIs the overview of the plan or the actual steps you will make to carry out your research.Usually a reverse planning to help you keep on track with action points.

IKEA COOK THIS PAGE. PLAN OF WORK TO BE DONE STEPBY-STEP.

4. Research MethodologyIs the Methodology you have proposed and employed using particular method(s) e.g. Interviews, user groups, observations… after finding gaps in your Literature research

IKEA COOK THIS PAGE; A PARTICULAR LAYOUT AND METHOD FOR COOKING YOUR RECIPE.

Research MethodologyOnce the gaps are known.

What is the appropriate method of further investigation that will give the the desired data. What type of data do you now need to obtain - user based data and detailed observations for example…What amount of time do you have at your disposal and your personal competences.Be careful about choosing the method. This is where I can help you consider the best types of research for you to undertake.

SOWhat do you need to eat know?

ANDWhat methods have to be used to obtain the ‘pertinent’ information.

You therefore have to consider the following:The problem (opportunity) that you have uncovered in your Poster Pitch. and the best types of data to research to nourish your Dissertation.

REMEMBER, THERE IS NO RESEARCH TO DO WITHOUT A RESEARCH PROBLEM OR OPPORTUNITY.

Dissertation (The Memoire Made)

• This is an editorial production, a written reflection and analysis based on a related piece of documented and conceptual research in creation in the fields of fine crafts and design, and more particularly in the field of creation leading the project.

• This Dissertation demonstrates a need for reflection and methodology, anchored in a contemporaneity from a question clearly established in a field of crafts and /or design (a research issue).

• The complete text should be no longer than 10,000 signs and characters

• The MADE thesis is an individual work which will be linked to your MADE Project. It provides food for thought on the MADE project and identifies its design positioning and thus puts forward the potential to work on this subject.

• The subject of the MADE Thesis and the MADE Project must therefore be the same.

• The Thesis corresponds to a phase 1 of the project.

• ––> The Dissertation is defended before a jury - 3 people, 2 of whom are external to your course.

The DissertationWeekly sessions to lead you through the Dissertation.

Helping you to:Find the right directions for your Research Methodology.Collect and analyse well your data. Find insights, fill gaps.Combine all data elements to bring you to a problem statement.Develop a succinct title and introduction to your document.Write the body of your document and your associated Bibliography and Appendices.Claire will be helping and guiding you with the graphic form of your Dissertation.

The FormIs also very important.

TheSubject title is important to get you started.

Data Collection - firstly, learn from the past to imagine the future.

The first piece of research you will need to do is an historic timeline.

Parchment paper cooking is not an entirely new idea, so we can’t give IKEA all the credit. The concept has been around ever since our forefathers learnt how to wrap food in leaves/ mud/ bamboo/ whatever.

But most parchment paper is just that – paper – they don’t come with recipes printed on them, with to-size measurements of ingredients. Therefore, we learn from history, but we innovate.

What did we learn about the Hoodie?Different epochs, different uses. Religious - monks, nuns and priests, Ancient Greece, Rome - Women/children hid themselves but they were also the element of surprise - little red riding hood.

The Dark Side - symbols, the grim reaper…

1930s Knickerbocker Knitting Company, now called Champion company invented hoodie of today.Simple, hood, simple fabric, pocket, utilitarian…

Street culture - simple to wear, anonymity, anonymity, ambiguity, disguised intentions,

Power dressing changed with Zuckenberg.

Psychological warmth and protection, in my own shell…

Symbolic - After Trayvon - hoodie protests

How could we place this on a timeline… https://observingleslie.com/magazine/history-of-the-hoodie-timeline-infographichttps://observingleslie.com/magazine/paean-to-the-hoodie

If our subject was around the hoodie how could it inspire us with a new view of it? FLY 'O' FENCING HOODIE

• 1. Understand the general flow of chronological history in relation to your subject.

• 2. See the full picture of a particular era(s) from beginning to end.

• 3. Make connections between individual events and people – and their relation to an era as a whole.

• 4. Grasp the overlapping or concurrency of seemingly unrelated events, contexts or cultures.

• 5. Notice patterns played out in history - socially, politically, technologically…

• 6. Identify cause and effect relationships surrounding historical events.

• 7. Memorize important moments easier.

• 8. Be able to synthesise a large amount of historical information in a relatively simple graphic timeline.

• 9. Design a timeline reminiscent of your subject area which identifies key moments in history clearly and creatively.

• 10. Be able to present your work clearly and succinctly.

Historical timeline. Why?

• LEARNING OBJECTIVES - Students will:

• Understand the historical context surrounding the subject they have chosen in a wider sense.

• Identify the key moments in its’ history – people, places, techniques, developments and innovations…

• Learn from the past to inform the present and future of their subject.

• Build a historical artefact which could eventually be used in their Dissertation using different types of media.

• LEARNING OUTCOMES - Students will be able to:

• Widen their knowledge around their subject in a broader context.

• Highlight where their project could take its place in the (future history) of this subject –

• Position themselves as a designer/creator learning within this wider context.

• Select key information.

• Develop their graphic communication skills and techniques to develop their timeline, online, offline, using different medias, platforms…

• Present their Timeline in a succinct, clear way, highlighting key information of interest to their subject.

The Hybrid Hall…“Entering the home of a London merchant in the 1630s, the space known as "the hall" was a flexible and agile site of intergenerational, hybrid activity. The term was used to describe the main living space, where members of the family and household spent much of their time.

Inventories from the time show items of flexible furniture in a semi-public space, where business meetings took place, children were home-schooled, servants may have slept and parties would have happened. The hall needed to adapt quickly from bedroom to family hub and from day to evening.

Hipsterdom“Hipsterdom” has been around since the ’40s, but the contemporary version that we know today, identifies through the repurposing and usage of vintage clothes, furniture, and technology. The subculture is about rehashing the past to create the future. Walking through the hipster environs of some of the greatest cities in the world, everything looks almost like it’s been taken out of a ’50s Americana textbook.Modern logo design is particularly influenced by hipster ideals. Hand-lettering, geometric shapes and patterns, emblems and badges and stamps. These are all references to the past, repackaged as something entirely new.”

Making coffee through the ages…The first "machine" like appliance used for making coffee was the percolator originating in the 1860s. This technique of coffee making evolved until in the 1920s, vacuum system machines were introduced and coffee makers incorporated pumps and filtering systems.

The groovy 1970s brought about the invention of the Mr. Coffee branded coffee maker. While it may be today's budget brand, Mr. Coffee machines were the first in-home drip brewing system for coffee. This invention helped to spread the popularity of coffee across industrialized populations.
