DMITRII MATVEEVICtl SMIRNOV (ON Ills 50TH BIRTllDAY) \ On October 27, 1969, the prominent So~Jat algebraist and Doctor of Physicomatematical Sciences, Professor Dmitrii Matveevich Smirnov, celebrated his fiftieth birthday. Dmitrii Matveevieh was born in a peasant family in the village Shilovo of the Sredski district in the province I~novo. In 1937, after having finished seven classes of secohdar?," school and the pedagogical school, he entered the Ivanovo Pedagogical Institute, which he attended until 1941. After his military courses, from 19~2 onwards, Dmitrii Matveevich took part in World War II. After his demobilization in 1946 he worked in the IvanQv~o Pedagogical Institute. In 1948 Dmitrii Matveevich obtained a postgraduate scholarship under A. I. Mal'tsev, and in 1951 he successfully defended his candidate's thesis in algebra. From 1957 to 1959 Dmitrii Matveevich was Dean of the Mathematical Department, and from J.959 to 1962 he ~.~s head of the Geometry Department at the Ivanovo Pedagogical Institute. Invited by A. I. Mal'tsev, in 1962, he moved to Novosibirsk, where he worked as a lecturer at the Novosibirsk State University. In 1965 Dmitrii Matveevich defended a doctor's thesis; from 1965 until today he has been working as a senior scientific assistant at the Institute of Mathematics, Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and simultaneously as a lecturer; later on he bec~me Professor of the Novosibirsk State University. Dmitrii Matveevich is the author of 27 publications of group theory, ring theory, and the theory of algebraic systems. Three main fields can be distinguished in the studies of Dmitrii Matveevich. The first field is that of the groups of automorphisrns of solvable groups, group rings, and linearly ordered sets. According to A. I, Mal'tsev, Dmitrii Matveevlch is one of the initiators of a comprehensive investigation into the groups of automorphisms. The results achieved by Dmitrii Matveevich on the groups of automor- phisms of solvable groups ~ith finiteness conditions (so-called solvable Ai-groups , introduced.by A. I. Mal'tsev) and the {inite expansions of such groups are well known. Dmitrii Mateevich described a group of automorphisms of the integral group ring Z(G) of the right-ordered group G in terms of groups of auto- morphisnm of the group G itself. On October 27, 1969, the prominent So~Jat a lgebra i s t and Doctor of Phys icomatemat i ca l Sciences, P r o f e s s o r Dmit r i i Matveevich Smirnov, ce lebra ted his fiftieth birthday.

Dmitr i i Matveevieh was born in a peasant family in the village Shilovo of the Sredski d i s t r i c t in the province I ~ n o v o . In 1937, a f ter having finished seven c l a s se s of secohdar?," school and the pedagogical school, he entered the Ivanovo Pedagogical Institute, which he attended until 1941. After his mi l i t a ry courses , f rom 19~2 onwards, Dmitr i i Matveevich took par t in World War II. After his demobil izat ion in 1946 he worked in the IvanQv~o Pedagogical Insti tute. In 1948 Dmitr i i Matveevich obtained a pos tgraduate scholarship under A. I. Mal ' t sev, and in 1951 he successfu l ly defended his candida te ' s thesis in a lgebra . F rom 1957 to 1959 Dmitr i i Matveevich was Dean of the Mathematical Depar tment , and f rom J.959 to 1962 he ~.~s head of the Geomet ry Depar tment at the Ivanovo Pedagogical Inst i tute. The second field of investigations of Dmltrii btatveevich is that of ordered groups (~tth and ~tthout operators). In this field his Investigations into right-ordered groups are of special importance, tti8 re- aults achieved in these studies are -fundamental.

The third field of Dmitrll Matveevtch's Investigations ts connected with the theorem of manifolds of groups and algebraic systems. He obtained, In particular, the following Important theorem offering various possibilities of application: if the factor-group F/A of the frec group F by the normal denominator A con- tains a normal system with factors from a certain manifold V, the group F/V(A), V(A) being a verbal sub- group of group A by the manifold V, will then contain a normal system whose factors are subgroups of the free V groups.

In addition to this, Dmitrtl Matveevich studied the finite approximability of groups and representations of groupa and rings by matrices.

At present Dmltrii Matveevich is occupied with investigations into the theory of algebraic systems in the Institute of Mathematics, Siberian Brar.ch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and delivers nu- merous lectures at the Novosiblrsk University. Severa.l pupils of Dmitrii Matveevieh ha~,,e ob~iv, ed ira- 9 port~at results in the theory of manifolds.

For many years Dmitri i Matveevich had maintained friendly relations with Anatolii Ivanovieh Mal'tsev. After the death of Anatolii Ivanovich he became head of the team of algebraists preparing the publication of A. I. Mal'tsev's monograph "Algebraic Systems."

Dmitrii l~Iatveevich partipates actively in public work, During several years he ~ s the secretary of the Siberian Mathematical Society, the Chairman of the Library Council of the Institute of .Mathematics, and Member of the Library Council of the State Scientific Techa~:~! Library of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Dmitrii ~iatveevich's national merits were acknowledged by five governmental a ~ r d s .

It must be mentioned that Dmitrii Matveevich is of a very steady and calm nature. Considering the great respgnsibility, exactness, and modesty of Dmitrii /~Iatveevieh, as we.It as his genera! good will, it is evidea~ that everybody who is acquainted with Dmitrii Matveevich is fond of being ifi personal contact ~4th him.

The editorial staff of the Siberian Mathematical Journal congratulates Dmitrii Matveevich Smirnov on his anniversary and wishes him good health and success for the future.
