    NEW YORK.

Scarcely had the Carpathia with her survivors of the Titanic catastrophe reachedNew York, than the Senate Investigating Committee held their first meeting at theWaldorf-Astoria H otel. The first witness called was Mr. J. Bruce Ismay, the chairman of the White Star Line, who has been so much blamed in New York in con-nesction with the disaster . Giving evidence on the first day, Mr, Ismay said th at &t

the time h e got into a lifeboat " there w asn't a woman on the boat deck nor any, passenger of any class so far as I could see or hear." Above, Mr. Ism ay, who i^seen in the centre of the photograph with his hand to his chin, is shown giving hiaevidence before the committee. He is also seen in the portrait,(Ellis an aWalery.)

    (From Our Special CoyreaponcJent.)P L Y M O U T H , April 28.Tlie following graphicstories oi the Titanic disaslcr were given to me

    by surviving members of the cri.W who arrivedhere to-day. Each further reveals the heroism ofthose who remained to die,Thomas Threlfall, leading fireman, of 128, St.M a r k ' s - c o f l a g e s , Live rpoo l, said :

" I was in my bunk when the crash came.Jimmy put his head in at the door and said :" ' F o r God's sake ! get up here ! She 's runinto something !'"T h e r e were not th ree of u s in -the crew thatbelieved for an hour afterwards that the shipWould sink. We thoug ht that wh-en (he water ha dfound its level she would still float. _" If ever there were thirty-six Britishers, theywere the engineers of that ship." T h e Yankee saloon "passengers were bravem e n . They put their wives on the boa t. I sawon e woman jump out of a boat to try to get backto her husband on the ship." Many women could have been saved^ andtheir husbands, too, if the women had got m theboats when they were told, and had not clunground their husbands' necks,

"KNEW SHE MUST GO DOWN.""W h e n the boilers broke out of the shij) it wasd r e a d f u l . Mr. Lowe, the fifth officer, was in command of my boat, and I heard him say :" ' Than k God ! Per hap s she will float now withall that weight out of her,'"T h e n she broke again, and we knew slie mustgo down." I was in boat No. 14, We had forty-five womenin it. Mr. Murdo ch, the first bflicer, scut the boata w a y , and he saidthey were the last words Iheard him u tter :' ' ' P u l l away fifty or one hundred yards, andwait for onlers. You must look out for wreck age. '" Before 1 went up to ihe boats the second engineer, Mr. rieslteih, sai d: 'W e have done all wecan . You must get out now.'" Boat No. li , into which I got, was the lastboat but one on the port side and the last but oneto go." Mr. Lowe hail a revolver in his pocket, and Ilieard him say before the boat was launched T" ' Hear in mind. Twill have no dirlv workhere.I will kill two at a ti me '"

"DIED A HERO'S DEATH,"Paddy McGoiigh, leading fireman, said :_ " People fancied in my boat that they could secl i g h t s , and said over and over agai n, crazy-like :'There ' s a light! There 's a ship !''_ We were told when we put off to throw out ourp a i u t c r s , so as to keep close together, as Mr.Murdoch thought we would have a better chanceif we kept in a cluster . Al] the crew wisli todeny the statement that one of the firemen tried tocut the lifebelt off Phillips, the first Marconioperator." Capta in Smith said, as we pulled off: ' Don 'tmind me, men. Save your own lives. God blessyo u i' "" ft was ihe suction of the Titanic when she sankthat the officers talat. ,Iust then a voice said : "Thro w outthat man," but we wero already beinij lowered aviaj',and (ire man remained.Wben she wenf y -should risk their lives in a hoticless eirort.Alfred Crawford, another steward, in his evidence slated that when the Tilanic .struck the iceberg he went below and told Ids passengers todress warmly.M r s , Straus placed her maid in boat No. 8 andpassed a rug lo her, and was about lo get in herself, when suddeuly she turned and Hung her armsaround her husband's neck, saying: " We've beenai l these years together. Where you go I go,"an d refused to get in,

This evidence was followed by an impressivep a u s e , the story arousing i)rof(iuHd emotion, oneor two women being moved fo tears.
