Fraud and scam prevention workshop Oct. 18
SIXES - The last Curry Contra Dance of the yearwill be held from 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, atthe Sixes Grange.Karen Olson will be caller for this event, which is
sponsored by the South Coast Folk Society, and livemusic is enthusiastically provided by theOutstanding Open Band made up of musicians fromup and down the coast. Side of the Tide MorrisDancers will entertain during a break in the Contradancing, jingling their bells, stamping their feet andclacking their staves together in their delightfullyrowdy dance.
Participants don’t need to bring a partner to a con-tra dance. If they do, they can expect a lot of part-ner changes throughout the evening. Those attend-ing also do not need to know how to dance. Thecaller will walk the dancers through the stepsbefore the band takes up their instruments.This year’s Curry Contra Dances were funded by agenerous grant from the Curry County CulturalCoalition and the Oregon Cultural Trust. Candlelight vigil plannedto raise awareness
BANDON - At 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17,First Baptist Church of Bandon will host acandlelight vigil at the flag pole in front ofOcean Crest Elementary School to help raisecommunity awareness of the severe drug prob-lem in the community and in the schools.Ocean Crest Elementary is located at 1040
Allegheny Ave. SW in Bandon.Intended to honor those lives who have been
lost or harmed through the use of illegal sub-stances, legal drugs such as alcohol and tobac-co, and the abuse of prescription medication,this vigil will include speakers and testi-monies, statistics and prayers for the safety ofBandon residents and kids.First Baptist Church also hopes to raise aware-ness of the current efforts to combat the drugproblem in Coos County, including the newly-formed Bandon Educational Foundation which
is currently exploring options for bringingdrug education and/or counseling to Bandon'sschools. First Baptist Church supports andhopes to work closely with these efforts, aswell as raise awareness of the needed commu-nity support, both financially and materially.This candlelight vigil is timed to dovetail withNational Red Ribbon Week, which runs fromOct. 23-31, this year’s theme being “Life isYour Journey - Travel Drug Free.”The event is open to the public and organizersare hoping to make a splash with a largeturnout.
