Brrrrrrr! Just as our grandmother’s predicted, the large crop of berries that have festooned our bushes this autumn have led to what is sure to be a harsh winter. The preceeding milder months may well have spoiled us but as we throw another dog on the bed to keep us warm you can’t help but wish for sunnier climes. Whilst we all enjoy a walk in the crisp, fresh air, the realities of winter such as scraping the car of ice and heating bills that would make an oligarch wince.

So thank heavens for this issue of dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL where we are determinedly pushing the practicalities of the colder climate to the back of our minds, and focusing on all things festive, all things fun and all things fabulous about winter.

Firstly we catch up with actress Denise Welch and her artist Lincoln Townley at the launch of his new exhibition at Midland’s gallery Antidote Art, an establishment fast gaining a reputation for showing innovative and exciting new work. Denise and Lincoln spoke to us incredibly openly about dealing with addiction, living life under the scrutiny of the media and how they are both moving forward with their careers. You’ll find that on page 18.

We’re a gregarious lot here at the magazine HQ so we’ve loved looking at what the best dressed partygoers will be wearing this season as well as finding out a few tips on how to go from desk to disco with ease from those experts in the know- see our style section starting on page 18 It’s not all about self-indulgent shopping though, as we’re always in the mood to give and to receive. Our wonderful gift guides for him, (p30) for her (p24) and the little ones (p34) are full of inspiration for your nearest and dearest so start making your lists for them and for you!

Meanwhile, for those of us who find the best way to deal with Winter is to leave it behind, we visit Langkawi in Malaysia for a spot of unwinding and relaxation and pop across the pond to the Big Apple, see our packed travel section starting on page 42!

This issue is also crammed full of competitions to brighten up the darkest of days and our full dairy and culture section are sure to fill those long nights with something worthwhile and interesting.

So fling off your thermals, crank up the heating and enjoy this new edition of dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL. We’ll see you in 2015- when it better be warmer!

W I N T E R D R I V I N G A D V I C E F R O M I A u TO u KAs the nights draw in and the weather turns colder, motorists can be caught out by changeable weather conditions. Falling temperatures, shorter daylight hours and the increasing likelihood of rain and snow can leave drivers at greater risk of suffering mechanical errors or breaking down if they fail to thoroughly maintain their vehicle.

Kamran Saleem, who owns iAuto UK in Solihull and Coventry, is offering motorists the following advice to ensure their vehicle is properly prepared for weather variables:

• Check tyre tread condition frequently. Good quality tread sheds snow, ice and grime from the road quicker, providing better traction and improved safety

• Change your oil. Clean, high quality engine oil goes a long way in protecting the engine in a cold start

• Monitor the air pressure in your tyres. Pressures drop in cooler air temperatures and flat tyres mean poor fuel economy and quicker wear.

• Check your lights. With the number of daylight hours decreasing, make sure your headlights and tail lights have functioning bulbs and are aimed correctly

• Keep your windscreen wiper reservoir topped up. You’ll need to use your wipers more frequently over the winter months so if they’re starting to wear down then now’s the time to change them.

• Look after your battery. It will be under increased demand when using your wipers, heater and headlights more frequently.

Page 7: dluxe Birmingham & Solihull Winter '14

www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk

7

• Check your antifreeze levels. Engine damage caused through cold weather conditions can be expensive to repair. The cooling system needs a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water in the winter months for maximum protection

Top Tip. • Depress the clutch pedal when starting your car on a cold day to ease the strain on your starter engine.

Clean, masculine and monochrome, the Grumhe brand epitomises strength and sophistication and it’s born and bred here in Birmingham. It’s a product that evokes a sense of originality for the modern man.

The brainchild of Robert Hallmark, a corporate solicitor who left the world of law to build and design his own quality British-made products, the Gruhme signature fragrance is sensual and aromatic. A woody accord with top notes of juniper berry, organic black peppercorn, bergamot, lemon and lavender, a heart of patchouli and cedar, on a base of oakwood amber musks interlaced with traces of cumin, celery seed and petitgrain making this a stocking filler must have.

Struggling to save the men under his command from starvation, from cholera and from beatings, he receives a letter that will change his life forever.

Denise Welch and Lincoln Townley are a very public couple. Their relationship has been the subject of tabloid titillation, gossip, rumour and scandalous speculation whilst behind closed doors they have fought their demons together to emerge focused and united.

dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL spoke exclusively to the showbiz couple about how hard it is to succeed when the world wants you to fail.

“The problem is, and they told me this, your misery sells more papers, Denise.” It’s an incredibly sad thing to hear from someone as bright and high spirited as Denise Welch is today. We’re talking ahead of her artist

husband (and toy-boy) Lincoln Townley’s launch party at Antidote Art in Lutterworth near Rugby, a gallery only too keen to display the work of the enfant terrible of Soho. His work continues to take inspiration from the dark and destructive period in which he and Denise first met - and this exhibition is an exclusive to Antidote Art outside of the Capital.

“Of course we met in Soho,” says Lincoln, who’s sat in a black sequinned jacket with wife Denise in matching sequins an hour before the show’s VIP opening. “It was around about 6 in the morning, so you can imagine what we were like back then...(he pauses)...Denise explains it very well, actually,” he defers graciously. “Yes, it was

6 o’ clock in the morning, apparently...” she says in her trademark North Eastern accent, which is still strong despite home being a combination of London and Manchester for many years. “I’d been deserted by my friends; they couldn’t find me. I was somewhere, I don’t know where, and in our minds Lincoln and I thought that our eyes caught each other across a crowded room and we gravitated towards each other. But our friend Meryl, who actually introduced us, said that we were the only two left in the club together…”

Denise makes it clear that this was no affair, “My then husband and I had already separated, but we just hadn’t chosen to go public about it at the time.” The intensity of the media at this time was exacerbated

dluxe

spotlight

Page 19: dluxe Birmingham & Solihull Winter '14

by Denise’s appearance and success on Celebrity Big Brother, which she went on to win. “That was a hollow victory to me. I don’t regret it because it was a catalyst for me turning things around. There was a lot of thinking time in there and I just thought, okay, things have got to change. That’s when we realised we were in love with each other and that it wasn’t going to work with alcohol and things.”

“We were down such a dark path that we knew we wouldn’t survive, not just talking about the state of our lives, but we knew we wouldn’t survive the relationship if we kept on drinking,” adds Lincoln. “We were both in bad places and we were both ready to stop,” states Denise simply. “It had all descended

into the darkness and, I think, for me, there’s no box unticked of things I haven’t done. I think we anchored each other, and we’re now, well, Lincoln’s nearly two years sober and I’m two and a half.”

These dark days however are about to envelope us all as the inaugural show at Antidote Art is inspired by his times in Soho as a functioning alcoholic and the ‘go to’ man for everything, connecting city bankers with every form of sin. By his own admission, Soho made him want to drink more, snort more, fight more and f*ck more and he has detailed his addiction in a compelling book called ‘The Hunger’.

“It is a shocking book,” says Denise, “but I don’t think I was shocked by it although some of it was hard to read. It just makes me incredibly proud of who he is today.”

“A lot of the art is inspired from that dark period ‘The Hunger’ is set in,” states Lincoln. “I’ve always painted; it was my Grandfather, in fact, who taught me how to paint, but the works are definitely visuals of that time although it is evolving; now there’s much more about the better sides of life rather than looking through the eyes of an addict.”

Within the show is a fascinating collection called ‘Banker’, which is a series of distorted portraits of the super-rich bankers blowing bonuses on excess after excess. “You would have these guys coming to the club and consuming and wanting more and more. It was all about consumption. You’d get more girls looking at you if you spent more money on bigger bottles of champagne, it was all about being seen. We would offer ‘celebration packs’ which were like £15k and would be four bottles of champagne and a private dancer. I remember there was this one guy with the private dancers - bearing in mind you’re not allowed to touch the girls - in a private booth and his bill at the end of the night was £75,000 and he didn’t flinch.” It is little wonder then that Lincoln found inspiration from such scenarios.

Moving forward Lincoln’s work is much more focused on the positives of life: his sobriety and marriage to Denise being part of that. “We couldn’t be happier, we’ve never regretted getting sober for a day, don’t miss it…” says Denise before Lincoln adds “I was a bad alcoholic and it got to that point where I thought we’ve got something here, in this relationship, it’s something worth giving it up for.”

Along their path to sobriety both Denise and Lincoln decided it best to step out of the public eye; “I had to pull my head down from the parapet. I was really scarred by a couple of magazines, so am very careful now when we talk and who we talk to,” admits Denise.

We are honoured today, as she takes us further into her confidence and talks of her new acting projects, getting back to the kind of work she loves including a new high profile series called ‘Boy meets Girl’ for the BBC; a comedy about transition featuring a transgender lead. She continues, “At the moment we’re both so focused on work we go out as rarely as possible. “We’ll always leave by the time

everyone starts to jump on the table and stuff if we do,“ laughs Lincoln. “That’s the great thing about being sober together, is that, when everyone starts getting pissed, we leave.” “And normally, no one even notices” laughs Denise.

The Lincoln Townley Art Collection is available exclusively at Antidote Art, 31 High Street, Lutterworth.

GROOMING: festive

fragrancesGuarantee a queue under the mistletoe with the most stylish signature scents. JOHN PAUL MCGUIRK, PRIVATE SHOPPER AT HARVEY NICHOLS, selects his favourite fragrances for the festive season.

If last year’s Christmas jumper didn’t survive the spring closet cull then it’s time to invest in a little bit of irony. The key this year is embellishment.

This scent is exactly what you’d expect from such a cult fashion brand – modern and manly! Opening with the aromatic freshness of santolina and vibrant resin, there are distinctive notes of opoponax myrrh and amber.

Yet another gem from Tom Ford, this fragrance has been created with two deeply iconic Arabian ingredients: flowery rose contrasted with oud, the most prized wood in perfumery. It’s noble, luxurious and distinctive ... exactly what a signature scent should be.

Dsquared2 Wild EDT, £59 (100ml):

Tom Ford Oud Fleur EDP, £215

Valentino Uomo EDT, £46

As with its predecessors, 01 and 02, Molecule 03 is an homage to the single scent ingredient, or aroma-chemical. Celebrated perfumer Geza Schoen takes niche fragrance line back to its roots with an androgynous masterpiece.

Aromatic and smooth, the notes are bergamot and myrtle; roasted coffee beans, chocolate and hazelnut; and leather and cedar. The result is a super sophisticated scent.

This year will see the brand new ‘Snow White and the Chuckle Beans’ take to the stage for a series of enchanting performances taking place every weekend from Saturday 22nd November right up

until Christmas. Cadbury World will be spreading some festive cheer with a whole host of themed activities for all ages to enjoy.

The live pantomime is based on the much-loved children’s tale, with a unique chocolatey twist, as Cadbury World’s own chuckle beans race to save the day. Laughter, participation and festive spirit are at the heart of the magical story, with five shows taking place every Saturday and Sunday.

Children will also be able to pay a visit to a very special guest, as Santa flies in from the North Pole to take up residence in his magical themed grotto. With a sack full of Christmas gifts to hand out to young visitors, children will have the chance to meet with the jolly man himself, before taking home a small piece of the magic.

A ROUNDED EDUCATION We all want our children to enjoy school and to achieve success. At King Edward VI High School for Girls, girls from all over the Midlands are welcome; many gifted girls from less privileged backgrounds come to KEHS thanks to generous bursaries and scholarships, which helps give the close-knit school its unique atmosphere.

The quirky eccentrics are as much at home here as the sporting aces, the budding actresses and the academic superstars. All students are encouraged to push the boundaries of their knowledge and pursue their individual interests and talents. In addition to outstanding results, the school aims to offer a rounded education to girls in a friendly, nurturing environment.

Girls at KEHS are smiling, helpful, highly intelligent and intellectually curious. Much of the curriculum is designed to stimulate the girls beyond ‘traditional’ subjects. Extra-curricular activities provide something for every taste from sport and Outward Bound activities to origami and astronomy; if the club doesn’t exist, girls are encouraged to create it!

Oates & Co are the new girls in town and they are making some big friends already with their range of beautiful, simple, unique homeware, designer gifts from across the globe and unusual vintage products they’ve sourced themselves - some from local designer/makers.

Created with passion by local entrepreneurs, Jane Oates and Sylvia Manser, the online emporium is a treasure trove of home-loveliness featuring many items and brands not on the high street.

We push the duo to name one of their favourite finds: the Norm Architects designed salt and pepper bottle grinders feature highly as “they are simple, very clean and work beautifully with a ceramic grinder, which seems to be infinitely adjustable. They are proper pepper grinders with more bite than normal”.

And this seems to be their ethos: inspiring items and gorgeous gifts that are out of the norm and that little bit special. Just like us.

INTO THE BLACK…It is true! Fanfare of trumpets and roll of drums…Birmingham City Centre has come full circle and developers are scouring the City for sites to build residential properties. This is phenomenally exciting after such challenging times and clearly shows the confidence within the Birmingham property market place. The Metal Works, located in the Jewellery Quarter and being built by Delph (a London based developer) has launched, late this summer, to great aplomb. With a high quality finish to these apartments the Metal Works is setting new standards across the city. After an incredibly busy September in City Centre lettings who is surprised that commercial confidence has returned? The residential lettings market is extremely buoyant and rental prices are increasing which is a welcome relief for investor landlords and those accidental landlords who are beginning to see a solid return on their property investments. Surely a bonus for any landlord?

And why was September so busy? Well, lettings in Birmingham City Centre is a cyclical market with July to September traditionally being the busiest times for the lettings market. However, with an increasing growing number of students, an incredible influx of Chinese students and post graduates as well as professionals re-locating to Birmingham to work for companies such as Deloitte, Deutsche Bank and English Heritage demand, for rental property, was at an all time high. Landlords have benefitted from increasing monthly rentals and low void periods which only adds to the reason as to why Birmingham is a great place to invest.

Across the country Birmingham City Centre is becoming the preferred location for

professional Landlords to invest. Accord Lets, in Birmingham City Centre, have seen a large number of London investors purchasing rental property in the City Centre. Jack Simpson, West Midlands Area Lettings Director for Countrywide Plc, said ‘London investors have a two-for-one mentality in Birmingham City Centre versus London prices and can borrow less resulting in the simple factor of more profit at the end of every month with less financial risk. Our southern investors also appear to have a long-term focus with regards to Birmingham City Centre. They are being creative with the presentation of their rental properties with a higher standard of furniture appealing to Tenants and we are experiencing longer tenancy terms. With void periods at an all time low within our business (less than a week for the months July to October) this is fantastic news for all our landlords.’ The erection of the John Lewis sign on the new New Street commercial development is a key indication that the face of Birmingham City Centre is changing for the better. What Landlord can’t afford to capitalise on this?

TO LET

Paul Sherrington, Senior lettings Branch Manager for Accord Lets in Birmingham City Centre answers Landlord questions:

Q: Do I have to have my property professionally cleaned at the start of a new Tenancy?

A: This is not a legal requirement of any Tenancy within the UK. However, we would recommend that properties are professionally cleaned. This ensures that a tenancy starts on a good footing and a positive note. The fact that the property has been professionally cleaned should be highlighted in the independent inventory so the property would need to be returned to the Landlord, at the end of the Tenancy, in this condition. As a Landlord you can also ask your lettings agent to add a clause to the Tenancy Agreement which would state that the property has to be professionally cleaned at the end of the Tenancy. This would ensure that, for further Tenancies, the cost of a professional clean is met by the previous Tenant and not by the Landlord thus minimising your costs.

Q: What happens if my tenant is consistently late paying their rent?

A: If your agent is collecting the rent then, more often than not, a phone call to a lazy Tenant will stop late rent payments. However, if the problem is a growing concern legal notices namely Section 8 and 21 can be served to the Tenant and you can take possession of the property again and re-let it. By choosing this route I would suggest you speak to your lettings agent and also take independent legal advice to ensure these legal notices are served correctly.

Q: In the City Centre who will clean the windows of my Property?

A: More often than not, in large blocks that are looked after by a Managing Agent, the Tenant is responsible for cleaning internally and the Managing Agent will clean the externals. The cost of these external cleans will normally be included within the service charge of the building but it is worth checking with your managing agent.

love langkawi

After a run of international headlines recently, I was reticent about visiting Malaysia, but after just six days, it’s not only opened my mind and my eyes, but changed the way I will holiday forever...writes dluxe BIRMINGHAM & SOLIHULL’S Kevin Urquhart.

The minute you step out of Langkawi airport, you are hit by the humidity. Any thoughts of the cold weather back in Blighty are forgotten as our 15-minute transfer takes us past paddy fields with the obligatory grazing water buffalo and houses on stilts. It might sound naive, but I’m quickly struck that I’m somewhere very different; very foreign. A hot and steamy jungle Paradise, if you will, that is made up of 99 islands at high tide, or 105 at low tide. Langkawi - translated locally as Eagle Rock - is almost half Mangrove (tropical rainforest by the sea) and it’s widely believed that it was this island collection and Mangrove swamps that saved the island from the tsunami, when it hit at low tide.

This six day, two centre holiday begins at the Meritus Pelangi on Cenang Beach, which is spectacular. The 35-acre beach resort and spa sits amidst a lush tropical, beachfront location. 352 guestrooms and suites are housed in clusters of single and double-storey wooden chalets built on stilts. Each boast spacious verandas overlooking stunning views of the ocean (like mine) or the surrounding landscaped gardens and pools. Although a huge resort, it feels intimate.

Step outside of the air-conditioned hotel resort and you’re transported to a different world of sounds, smells and, of course, the humidity, which can hit 90%. Authentic roti chani stalls (a local delicacy a bit like a very light naan with fried egg centre) is yours for around 4.50 ringit (roughly 90p) and rub shoulders with Starbucks, which is very much at Westernised prices so considered a luxury treat. It’s this melange and juxtaposition of clashing cultures that makes Malaysia so beguiling - and nowhere more so than the weekly Night Market in Kuah, which is a short taxi ride from the hotel. Here, hundreds of stalls sell the finest street food in to the depths of the night that has the locals out in force - always a good sign. And so cheap.

But many guests of the Meritus Pelangi never leave the resort and it’s not difficult to understand why. What strikes me is the quietness of the resort; aside from the occasional jet ski or landing aircraft - it’s becoming more renowned - the only sound is the gentle lapping of the ocean as it caresses the white blonde sands. It makes for the most incredible backdrop to my seaside jog.

After a morning idly swimming and snoozing on the beach, it’s time for our al fresco cookery demonstration, which I still manage to be late for. I’m never late, so must be adopting a Malaysian mindset. The spice route is the reason behind the fusion of spices that ended in

Malaysia. Under the watchful eye of the Executive Chef, we prepare the meat and spices, herbs and natural flavourings such as Galangal (ginger variety), candle nuts and lemongrass. It was the most flavoursome, deeply spiced dish I’ve ever had the chance to eat - and I’m rubbish at cooking. Will food ever be this good again?

As you get older and (hopefully) wiser, tastes change and the idea of multi-site travelling must be done in style, if it is to be entertained at all. Thankfully, our second hotel of the trip is the world-renowned, The Danna. It represents old school, 5-star, colonial splendour appealing to the international jet-set, as well as being a favourite of many visiting Royals and celebrities. The Danna is well located to take advantage of some fantastic local attractions. A must-visit is the Langkawi Cable Car, which we head straight for, as the weather can (and has) been changeable - September is part of their low season, albeit that temperatures never fall below 25-degrees. It’s said that on a clear day, you can see Thailand as well as a stunning 360-degree panoramic of Langkawi from the 708meter viewing platform. Sadly, cloud stopped play, so viewing is restricted at the very top, but it is no less of an experience.

Whether it’s the altitude or the unwinding of the previous three days, but we decide it’s high time we had some cocktails pre-dinner. Thankfully, their Planters restaurant is seductively lit, so we pretend not to see each other slur. The food at this a la carte restaurant is incredible, but the portions are sized (we are later told) for the American and German markets where more is more, so either take elasticated pants, willpower, Rennies or all three. Also highly recommended - both by me and Trip Advisor - is the neighbouring, Privilege restaurant, at the Marina next door. Their tasting menu is sublime.

After a night of excess, I make up for it with (slightly hungover) pre-breakfast yoga on the beach. Taken under the shade of the trees, the high flying birds and the gentle lapping of waves make a stunning setting for the hour long class. A magical start to the morning. A post-yoga stroll later had me feeling a bit Bridget Jones’y but without the angst. If simple truths are shared, this is one seriously pretty place; so much so I turned off Facebook so I could concentrate on the peace and solitude.

As is becoming a rule on a trip like this, simple relaxation is balanced with incredible activities and, quite possibly, the most essential thing to do whilst vacationing in Langkawi is the Mangrove trip: the yin to the yang.

The 5000 years old Eco system of the Mangroves is fiercely revered and carries a UNESCO status, so that there can never be over-development of the island for fear of destroying the delicate balance.

It is the Mangrove waters that make the seas around Langkawi milky. If you are looking for good diving sites, they do exist at Pulau Payar island, which is one hour by ferry but considered the best snorkelling site in Malaysia.

I am slathered in both sun lotion and mosquito repellent: not an attractive combo but best be prepared as this is a 4-hour, 21km round trip up the Kilim River that takes you in to the deepest Mangrove. I feel like David Attenborough, as I see native monkeys. These notorious pink-loving pickpockets are attracted to human males - it’s a testosterone thing – so avoid eye contact. Being Alpha male does come with considerable advantage: a harem to plunder that can see the number one monkey copulate 35 times in one day. Truly the King of the Swingers.

Sometimes a bottle nosed dolphin will shelter in the Mangrove. This is a sure sign for fishermen that there is bad weather on its way. Sure enough, we see a school of dolphins swim around and past us, signalling that very fact. Not more than thirty minutes later and we were glad of our ponchos for protection against the monsoon storm. We take refuge and refuelling at the Hole in the Wall floating restaurant. The simple but tasty broth and chicken/rice was made all the more special by the Thunderclaps and torrential downpour: it once again reminded you were in jungle territory.

In low season aka rainy season, it’s fair to say it’s one day on, one day off when it comes to weather. But that didn’t detrimentally affect our enjoyment - where and when else do you get the enforced opportunity to go an explore? In fact, this changeable weather is perfect for discovering Langkawi, as when the sun comes out, it’s fierce.

The mixture of adventure and relaxation, cooking and culture is what I will remember most about this trip and one that will inspire how I holiday (and eat) in future. After immersing myself in the Malaysian way of life an ordinary holiday will no longer do and it is with the heaviest of hearts that I bid Langkawi farewell. But not goodbye.

The end of the festive season signals the tail end of Britain’s notoriously wet and gloomy winter. With spirits low and temperatures even lower, what better way to shake off the post-Christmas blues than by hitching a ride with United Airlines and touching down in the land of opportunity and gorgeous cosmopolitan chic – New York City! We’ll race you there…

New York, New York: a sprawling mega city of yellow taxi cabs, gargantuan sky scrapers, and all round American style. As the song says “if you can make it here, you’ll make it anywhere” and now, with Birmingham’s exclusive flights courtesy of United Airlines, it just got a whole lot easier to get there!

Birmingham’s only transatlantic airline, United Airlines offers over 21 daily non-stop flights to the US from the UK and has ferried a whopping 1.5 million customers to the land of the free in their 16- year partnership! Part of the Star Alliance group, United Airlines offers an impressive range of business and economy class seating that’s perfect for connoisseurs of the continent and all designed to ensure you arrive stateside in style and sophistication.

United Airlines Economy flights come fully equipped with a choice of fresh breakfast, lunch, and dinner, depending on what time you’re flying, a whole library of film and TV shows to

browse through, perfect for an inflight Sex and the City marathon to get you in the mood. All flights include complimentary fresh juices and coffee as well as a variety of wines, beers and spirits available to purchase. At the business end of United Airlines, passengers are cocooned in luxurious leather with 180 degree reclining seats, 15.5 inch touch screen monitors, and an extensive, and complimentary wine list to choose from. Passengers can also make use of the noise-reduction headsets and Philosophy-brand skin care products ensuring a relaxed, pampered and radiant you steps off the plane. For those

wanting to make use of the flight to catch up on some paperwork can even access on-board wifi via BusinessFirst, or if you’re like us, you can simply tweet from the sky! #perfection.

So eight hours later, feeling relaxed and refreshed it’s time to touch down in Newark Liberty International Airport, a short 25 minute trip from the glistening heart of New York City. So, where to go? What to do?

“IT’S SAFE TO SAY THAT WHATEVER YOU’RE

LOOKING FOR, NEW YORK HAS IT”

Not only that, it darn well flaunts it. In the same way that London is split into neighbouring boroughs, New York is composed of 5 uniquely distinct areas: The Bronx, Brookyln, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island – each offering its own individual flavour to the overall New York palette. Whatever you’re looking for, it’s worth bearing in mind two key tourist tips:

1) Get a map – nothing will prepare you for the sheer scale of New York City, but believe us, it’s HUGE! Ambling along sides streets in the hope of bumping into Central Perk really isn’t the way. So grab yourself a map and head off into the Big Apple with a least a vague idea of where you’re going to avoid wasting time in the city that never sleeps!

2) Understand the grid system – it really isn’t as hard as you think it is, it just seems it…we promise. In the same way that traversing the London Underground seems insane but actually it all makes sense eventually, navigating New York is pretty much the same. East to West are all Avenues, North to South are all Streets. It seems daunting, but a short wander around tends to be all it takes and before you know it you’ll be scampering ‘two blocks East’ like a seasoned pro.

Jaguar continues its astounding rebirth with the launch of the XE sports saloon; the driver’s car that’s set with the task of stealing small saloon sales from the likes of Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Streamlined styling and a luxurious interior sit astride an incredibly light recycled aluminium chassis to ensure outstanding dynamics and exceptional fuel consumption; essential in today’s environmentally focused marketplace.

Manufacturing of the aluminium-intensive Jaguar XE occurs at Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull plant in an all-new facility. Part of a £1.5bn investment, this flexible, purpose-built site will create 1,700 UK jobs. Jaguar’s world-leading expertise in aluminium structure engineering enables exceptional fuel consumption and emissions figures: with the new Ingenium diesel engines, achieving 75mpg and 99g/km CO2 the XE is the most efficient Jaguar ever. Power fans are not deprived though thanks to the range topping Powered by the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine from the acclaimed Jaguar F-TYPE, the XE S is capable of 0-60mph in just 4.9 seconds.

All that power is easily controlled thanks to some of the most advanced driver assistance systems available. All Surface Progress Control (ASPC), developed through decades of Jaguar Land Rover experience in off-road traction systems, can electronically gain traction in seconds and is ideal for use

on low-grip surfaces, such as snow-covered roads.

Laser projection technology enables the XE’s optional head-up display to generate sharp, high-contrast colour graphics (such as vehicle speed and navigation) retaining clarity even in direct sunlight whilst a forward facing stereo camera is mounted behind the front windscreen to give a 3D view of the road ahead: this highly accurate data is used for functions including autonomous emergency braking and a lane departure warning system.

As technologically advanced and up to date as the XE is, it is instantly recognisable as a Jaguar with its aluminium skin formed around the fundamental principles of perfect proportions and aerodynamic efficiency. The strongly-sculpted bonnet creates a taut, muscular appearance whilst the very steeply raked windscreen and rising waistline accentuate the streamlined, coupé-like profile, adding to the sense of movement. Signature ‘J-Blade’ running lights up front are complimented by rear lights inspired by the iconic E type; a horizontal line intersecting a roundel, a feature also present on the F-TYPE sports car.

An impressive drag coefficient of just 0.26Cd makes the XE the most aerodynamic Jaguar yet and has been achieved by features that amplify each improvement made. Innovations include front bumper ducts

which channel laminar airflow over the surface of the front wheels to reduce drag combined with lightweight under-floor panels running back to the rear silencer to create an almost perfectly smooth surface, significantly reducing drag aiding both performance and economy.

Expectations raised by the XE’s beautiful exterior styling are exceeded once inside. The spacious cabin cocoons front seat passengers with a deep centre console, creating a cockpit-like feel. The 8-inch touchscreen for the new takes centre stage in the sweeping curves of the instrument panel. On models equipped with automatic transmissions, Jaguar’s unique rotary drive selector rises up from the centre console making the care feel alive.

Contour-hugging front seats, available in a range of premium fabrics and fine grade leathers, are mounted low, creating a sports-car like driving position. The XE proves that sleek, streamlined styling and interior space need not be mutually exclusive. All occupants enjoy generous amounts of head and legroom, and the deeply scalloped seatbacks liberate even more space for passengers seated in the rear of the XE.

On the dashboard Jaguar’s new InControl infotainment system takes centre stage: its innovative 8-inch touchscreen brings fast, intuitive access to all features and functions – and iOS and Android smartphone apps. It

also controls the XE’s optional Laser Head-Up Display, a first for Jaguar, which projects high-contrast colour images directly in the driver’s line of sight. The virtual images appear to ‘float’ two metres in front of the driver. Displaying information such as speed, turn-by-turn navigation instructions, traffic signs, and cruise control settings in this way means that the driver’s eyes remain focused where they’re needed most: the road ahead.

All models come well equipped with Satellite Navigation, cruise control, DAB digital radio and multi-function soft grain leather steering wheel whilst the Portfolio model adds premium soft grain Windsor leather with herringbone perforations, Meridian audio system, 10 way electric front seats, Bi-Xenon headlamps with LED signature DRLs and 18” alloy wheels (except on 163PS engines). For those wanting to accentuate the sporting style of their XE the R Sport and S models feature a subtle rear spoiler, chrome treatment for the side power vents. sports suspension and a race-inspired interior respectively. The S model adds such trinkets as enlarged air intakes hint for supercharged V6 engine, side sill extensions and red brake callipers.

Prices for the XE start at £26,995 for the 2.0i Petrol SE Auto with the range topping 3.0i S model costing £44,870 on the road.

NEW YEAR NEW YOU!

After the Christmas blow-out. boost your immunity with a natural approach to detoxing writes Janey Lee Grace.

Delay breakfast and start your day with a fresh green juice, it’s the quickest way to get copious amounts of dark green leafy veg into your system. Juice a small apple to sweeten and then throw in whatever you have, a chunk of cucumber, celery, broccoli (masses of vitamin C in the stalk) spinach, kale, a bit of lemon and a chunk of fresh ginger. Advocado makes it creamy. Serve over ice. You may also want to add a shot of Live Wheatgrass, Buy the frozen wheatgrass shots from Northants company Live Wheatgrass – delivered to your door for around one pound a day - it’s like health insurance in a shot glass. www.livewheatgrass.co.uk

If you feel as if you have a cold coming on, boost your immune system with Ovivo Wellness, take a shot a day for seven days, you’ll be amazed how it wards off the lurgy. Its Olive Leaf extract renowned for its immune boosting properties but it actually tastes nice.

For digestive problems Peppermint tea is great (or fresh ginger) and if you (god forbid) still have a hangover whizz up a smoothie, 2 teaspoons of honey (preferably organic wild honey) half a banana, 3 teaspoons natural yoghurt, half a cup of chopped papaya, and a cup of milk or rice milk, and serve over ice – or just have a large spoonful of Manuka Honey!

Pamper yourself during your ‘new you’ detox too. Take relaxing baths, add Himalayan salt or sea salt and a generous amount of Aromatherapy bath salts from Sensara Kolure. www.sensarakolure.com

Indulge in a scented candle but ditch the petrochemical ones – try the Indulgence essential oil natural candles from Aroma Naturals www.aromanatural.co.uk

Moisturise all over with the cheapest and best moisturiser for all skin types – Tiana raw organic extra virgin coconut oil, you only need a tiny amount. It’s available from from Holland and Barrett. Ditch the chemicals in your personal care and cleaning products too, most of us are swimming in a kind of ‘toxic soup’ of artificial fragrances which can lead to insomnia, allergies, respiratory problems and more. You’ll probably sleep better and have less headaches (important if you are detoxing) and definitely save a small fortune – plus you can tick the ‘eco’ box. Opt for simple old style cleaning with a microfibre cloth and some bicarbonate of soda, white vinegar is a must and if you want something a little more antibacterial for the loo seat use a drop of Tea Tree Oil.

Above all, do something that lifts your spirits, whether that’s a long walk or just holing up and watching a comedy, - s t u d i e s everywhere show that happiness is the best antidote to disease. Make a conscious choice to smile and practice gratitude.

Happy New Year!

It’s the time of year when you start to think about making changes. Whether you’re thinking of joining a

gym, starting the five-two diet, going on the wagon (well at least cutting back on the alcohol for a couple

of weeks) or simply making a radical change to your own personal style, now is the time to do it.

THIN ON TOP?

But it need not be the beginning of the end as there are numerous reasons for hair to thin for both men and women, many of which will right themselves in time. However, in the short term, thinning hair can be managed to make the most of what you have.

Trichologist of 20 years Sally-Ann Tarver MIT.FTTS of the Cotswold Trichology Centre in Worcestershire says “Check your stress levels, your diet and lifestyle (for example, any extreme weightloss programme or liquid protein replacement) and have a health check with your doctor. Anything from thyroid problems to the menopause can contribute to thinning hair. Also are you on any medication? Side effects need to be ruled out.”

So what can be done to manage the situation?

Here we look at two treatments for thinning hair readily available on the High Street.

Hair thinning and loss. Not many people want to admit to it, let alone talk about it. In men it can be a natural and expected part of the ageing process, however for women it can be a taboo subject.

Birmingham’s boutique hotel

is planning on some big changes in the New

Year and you’re invited in to see the fantastic new-look hotel.

Not long after the clock strikes midnight, the team at Malmaison will get to work on creating a shiny new Bar and Brasserie ready for your 2015 celebrations. A complete overhaul of the hotel’s first floor, this will include a brand new dining area complete with booths and a revamped Private Dining Room. The new-look Chez Mal will be finished by the end of January and will welcome a new French-inspired menu, whilst also serving signature dishes like the New York Strip Steak and Mac ‘n’ Cheese.

Alongside this, the Bar will also be transformed with the removal of the existing red columns and raised seating area. The main change will be an entrance direct from The Mailbox Mall, making it even easier to stop by for a cocktail whilst enjoying some designer retail therapy. The outside entrance will remain, and the patio will also undergo a slight makeover in the hope of some early spring sun. This work will take place throughout January and by mid-February you should be able to raise a glass to the new Mal Bar.

If you’re planning to stay overnight, 30 Club rooms will also get a makeover with the introduction of coffee machines

and uber-comfy Eames Chairs. With a swanky new interior, including comfy cushions, fur throws and luxurious new carpets, these rooms will have people lining up at the doors.

Fear not, though, Malmaison will remain open during the works so you can still enjoy your breakfast meetings, quick lunches, after work drinks and big dinners.

Winter is well and truly here but the last thing you want to do is hibernate, especially when there are so many new eateries opening their doors across the city. Don’t forget about your old favourites though, keep up to date with your culinary city at www.msdeliciouspr.blogspot.com

The team from Opus hopes to infuse the best elements of Europe in Birmingham with their third venture, Bar Opus in Colmore Business District.

Situated at the foot of Colmore Row’s iconic One Snowhill building, the stylish city bar is the latest venture from the team behind Opus at Cornwall Street and Café Opus at Ikon and will provide a blend of European culture with the perfect spot for a post-work refreshment.

Inside, a giant clock with a nod to the iconic Musee d’Orsay timepiece pays homage to the site’s original use as a train station whilst the trademark diamond-shape wallpaper found across Opus’ venues will again be adorning the walls.

Open from 7am, a range of breakfast, lunch and ‘after five’ dishes will be available for those seeking a bite to eat, whilst the Opus team have commissioned an eponymous beer to be served – a 4.2% ABV Bavarian lager made by German brewers Kaltenburg – and will stock a range of premium spirits which includes local gin Langley’s No8.

The buzz of European cafés is reflected in the late morning and lunch options, with classic favourites, light salads and one-pot warmers. Mains such as slow braised free-range pork cheeks (£10.50), Brixham Bay bouillabaisse (£13.50) and lamb hotpot (£14.50) should entice diners throughout the day.

Edgbaston Village seems to be fast becoming a hot bed of great eating and drinking establishments with the recent opening of The High Field.

The former Art Deco villa on High Field Road has been transformed into a spacious gastro pub with a buzzing bar and modern dining space with lots of natural daylight. I loved the elegant dining furniture – especially the beautiful, hand-upholstered curvy chairs in country scene fabrics that oozed comfort.

The owners, Peach Pubs have gone to great lengths to bring a smart country gastropub to the city. The restaurant has views over a long leafy garden planted with several varieties of Warwickshire apple trees; and an orangery with dramatic bi-fold doors opening onto a series of sunny terraces.

Head chef Dean Jeffers, has created some inventive seasonal dishes to go onto the all day menu. My top choices are the Free-range Cotswold Chicken, Walnuts, Apples & Cider with Creamy Mash (£15.00) and the Lobster Shepherd’s Pie with Buttered Peas & Lobster Bisque (£20.00). Food is served from breakfast right through the day.

The High Field has already proved to be hugely popular this autumn and really does feel like a home away from home. www.highfieldedgbaston.co.ukT

SABAI SABAIThe popular restaurant hosted a double celebration this winter to mark the 10th birthday of their Moseley branch as well as Thailand’s Loy Krathong festival.

Loy Krathong is one of the many traditional festivals of Thailand, when Thais pay respect to the goddess of the waters by floating candlelit offerings on all the waterways around their kingdom. The word “Loy” literally means “to float” and “Krathong” means a raft. The handcrafted rafts are intricately decorated with folded banana leaves, candles, flowers and incense sticks.

Owners Torquil and Juree Chidwick, will be marking it with their local customers with a special event at their Harborne branch as well as introducing a new Celebration Tasting Menu. Having sampled this seven course feast, you will never have seen dishes from the Far East more elegantly presented, classically prepared or exquisitely flavoured than you do here.

Dishes include a great chunky monkfish in green curry; a succulent stack of lamb chops with garlic and peppercorn; seabass in a great spicy mango and apple sauce and roast duck in a sweet and tangy tamarind sauce. The menu is priced at £35 or £55 to include six wine flights.

Having been stuck for ideas for where to dine one weekend I appealed to my twitter followers for inspiration. And up popped a dinner suggestion to dine at Henry Wong’s in Harborne, which made me happier than a laughing Buddha!

For 30 years now, Henry Wong has been a mainstay of Harborne's culinary scene, long before the district gained its contemporary reputation as a hub of gastronomic delights. That a restaurant can thrive after thirty years is testament to the constant striving to the best it can be, as directed by owner Parm Rai and under the watchful eye of Executive Chef, Ricky Wu.

The stylish restaurant, which recently benefited from a refurbishment, provides a rarefied experience: intricately-detailed dishes are presented with a care and attention that sets Henry Wong apart from the city's lesser Cantonese establishments. It's a recipe for success and couple this with their cocktail and champagne bar and you appreciate what keeps the cognoscenti coming back time and again.

As is our way, we turned up half an hour late for our table (oops), but host Marianne kindly still accommodated us on this busy Friday night. The place was full within the hour and the attentive staff were bustling around as fast as they could do to please the steady stream of eager customers.

Our ever so helpful waiter, Shine, regaled us with his cocktail suggestions and offered us something fruity and bubbly to start with - a fabulous hibiscus Bellini complete with flower. Hubby had the lychee Margarita, decorated with a plump juicy lychee fruit, which was equally wonderful.

Henry Wong’s has a real elegance to the place, but was also very lively due to the full house this particular Friday night. The menu is mouth-watering with easy navigation and a mix of classic Chinese dishes sit alongside contemporary signature dishes by the Executive Chef, if you're looking to tantalise your tastebuds!

We ordered a whole manner of dim sum to begin our feast with.

The platter for two consisted of crispy vegetable won ton, steamed dumplings and mini chunks of spare ribs. These plump bits of cubed meat were juicy and much more elegant to eat than the long ribs we’re used to. As well as some sweet crispy seaweed, we enjoyed a generous portion of pan-fried scallops served with garlic & vinegar sauce on a platter. It's a mix that doesn't sound like it should work, but it absolutely does!

Our mains were a tasty portion of honey pepper chicken with Singapore noodles and a loin of lamb made with chilli & garlic, which was cooked so well it was soft, moist and full of flavour.

Desserts are also something of a treat; if you've a sweet-tooth, try the Salted Caramel and Chocolate Cheesecake. As a cheesecake connoisseur, this is often the sign of a good restaurant and Henry Wong came up trumps again. The firm salted caramel mousse at the heart of the cheesecake was a gorgeous surprise and one of the most more'ish desserts I've had in ages. I wonder if they do dessert and coffee if you're just passing through?

All in all, Henry Wong is a wonderful fine-dining Cantonese restaurant that leaves its rivals standing thanks to its convivial atmosphere, exceptional food and accomplished cocktails. Its thirty year heritage has given this venue a laid-back confidence - it knows who it is and what it is - and this is translated into your dining experience. For me, Cantonese food has rarely been more exquisitely flavoured and I just kick myself that I had never visited sooner.

I fully intend to be back in January with the launch of their new season Taster Menu, which sounds amazing: Scallop Yuk Sung; Aromatic Duck Roll; Honey Pepper King Prawn; Seabass Fillet with Asparagus and Sirloin Steak with Chilli & Pepper served on a bed of crispy noodles. After a week of turkey, my tastebuds will be screaming out for something special and what better place than Henry Wong. Highly recommended.

Fancy a long weekend with great food & drink? Then try Belgium, one of the most underrated travel destinations in Europe. Cheaper than Paris but with an amazing array of medieval buildings, Brussels is a modern capital city with a laidback atmosphere – brilliant for pottering around cool boutiques and little farmers markets, taking breaks at charming cafes and restaurants.

With an incredibly quick flight from East Midlands Airport, in just 45 minutes you’re landed in Brussels and ready to be exploring the streets. bmi regional flies up to three times a day direct from East Midlands Airport to Brussels and at £80 one way it’s very affordable (see bmiregional.com).

We started our tour in the charming medieval university town of Ghent, which is about an hour away from Brussels (regular trains run from the airport station). Ghent is like the Belgian Cambridge – lots of cyclists, quaint cobbled streets and people punting down the waterways that traditionally provided the town with its trade in agricultural goods. However, now you are more likely to find tourists and students in the town, viewing its fab quay area, sampling the local produce and visiting the world famous cathedral. An amazing destination for a weekend break, Ghent is a great place to stroll around – small enough to be entirely walkable but still with lots to see. We stayed at the excellent and rather luxurious NH Gent Belfort, which had comfy beds, huge modern rooms and an excellent buffet breakfast.

For a funky yet informal meal, try the Belga Queen – situated in the beautifully lit and renovated quay area, the Belga Queen is located in a renovated 13th Century dockside building that has dealt with everything from grain to beer. With a contemporary take on traditional cuisine, we were treated to Weaver fish with a trio of Peas, the tiny local shrimp, oodles of wine and a fab locally produced elderflower liqueur called Roomer. From the main square it is a short walk to the pub and bar district, including the Smallest Bar in Gent, which is teeming with locals and students, all of whom were very friendly. The

bars are open into the small hours, and the city feels safe and welcoming.

The following morning we set about finding out about what Belgium is famous for – chocolate! Arriving at the Chocolato emporium, we were greeted by every sort of chocolate imaginable – drinking chocolate in a huge array of flavours (and lactose free for me), individual dainties and huge bars. The chocolatier, who had given up a lucrative career in banking to follow his dream, got us into aprons and in front of the chocolate machine, which pours a permanent stream of melted chocolate – mmm! We were instructed in making our own little flavoured chocolates, which we got to take home with us, as well as taste and be educated in different flavours and types of chocolate.

Then it was straight from chocolate onto a three-course lunch of more traditional Belgian food at Stadsrestaurant, consisting of Hinkelspel, a deep fried cheese croquette, followed by an organic beef stew marinated in Leffe beer, salad and French fries, all rounded off by an enormous tiramisu. By this time we all rolled out of the restaurant and off for a much needed walking tour. The tour allowed us to soak up the arts and retail scene in Ghent, with a funky graffiti street where taggers and artists alike can express themselves in a free and legal way, and a great retro café with a fun chandelier made of old Barbie dolls. The gut-busting itinerary then continued with a five-course beer themed extravaganza at Les Brigittines, an excellent traditional Belgian restaurant, although it is fair to say that by the time we had reached Beer Sorbet, we’d all had enough!

The following morning after a light breakfast at the Hotel Pantone (a hotel themed on the Pantone scale of colour) we explored the centre of Brussels, taking in the rather spectacular Medieval square, some great markets and excellent boutiques. If you are into the independent retail scene, then Belgium is the place to be, as both Ghent and Brussels boasts some fab boutiques, many with a vintage or pre-loved theme.

However, we were here to eat not shop so after the mandatory two hours, we stopped for more food at L’Amour Fou, a modern American diner with amazing burgers, rosemary fried potatoes and the BEST BANOFFEE PIE IN THE UNIVERSE! This is a great place for families as it is laidback and provides a safe separate playroom for the kids to run off their dinner.

But no such time for us, we were off on a tour of the rather fascinating Art Nouveau architecture in the city, many of which are still residential properties, and add a truly beautiful aspect to the sprawling modern capital. However one thing was missing – we hadn’t had any waffles, so we crammed in a quick waffles and hot toffee sauce at the station before making our way home.

A great gastro getaway for grown ups, Brussels and Ghent have it all – food, drink, friendly atmosphere and loads to see and do. A must visit for all fans of the weekend city break.

LINCOLN TOWNLEY AT ANTIDOTE

Bad boy writer and artist Lincoln Townley has brought his unique style to Leicestershire as he exhibits his first art collection at Antidote Art in Lutterworth. Townley, author of the infamous ‘The Hunger’ novel, which documents his wild lifestyle whilst working for one of the country’s best known strip clubs, translates the decadence and darkness of that world into a collection of captivating contemporary images.

Following a spectacularly successful launch in London, Lincoln chose Lutterworth’s Antidote Art to show the collection and represent his interests outside of the capital.

Sabai Sabai hosted a double celebration to mark the 10th birthday of their moseley branch as well as Thailand's Loy krathong festival.

Thailand’s Loy krathong is one of the many traditional festivals of Thailand with the word “Loy” literally meaning “to float” and “Krathong” meaning a raft. It is an evening when Thais pay respect to the goddess of the waters by floating candlelit

One of birmingham’s most iconic drinking venues, The bubble Lounge at Hotel du Vin, has had something of a facelift over recent weeks, although on closer inspection this is more evolution that revolution. general manager, Tony Elvin, explains; “When we told guests we were planning a refurbishment of the bubble Lounge we were somewhat taken about by their sheer panic, ‘No, don’t touch anything!! they said’, but after 14 years of long lunches and even longer evenings the lustre had faded on the artwork, the sofas were worn and expectations had moved on; people need to power their array of laptops, phones and tablets, for example”.

It was key to maintain the character of the bar but add some comfort and practicality, so the design team have replaced all of the furniture, raised the height of the seating and tables so people can eat comfortably, plus they’ve added power points all around the bar - an essential for their day time business crowd - given the ‘back bar’ a redesign, added another till and spent some time restoring the original artwork. mel Holmes, the artist that created the Café Florin feel of the bubble Lounge fourteen years ago, even returned to the hotel to clean and restore the champagne-themed wall panels. “We talked about going for something more radical, but our guests were very much against it and on reflection we decided they were right. It is already special, we just need to give it some love”, says Tony.

Something else that remains unchanged is the extensive and eclectic wine list, as well as their impressive array of wines by the glass, spirits, cocktails and bottled beers. The bubble Lounge, located to the left of the main entrance stocks a wealth of beverages from around the globe for your enjoyment, well matched by a knowledgeable team to talk you through all the weird and wonderful bottles on display, as we found out at one of their recent tasting events.

The old bubble Lounge is revived and refreshed, much as you will be if you pay it a visit this Winter.

An internationally acclaimed super model, who has graced catwalks in milan, New York, Paris and Tokyo, has returned to birmingham to launch a range of men’s jewellery.

James Smith has teamed up with uk jewellery designer Terry Eleftheriou to design and create a collection of 15-20 men’s jewellery items – terryterry4jamessmith – which has now launched and is available from www.terryterry.co.uk.

James, 23, and originally from Shropshire said: “Terry and I had always talked about our love of fashion and one day potentially designing our own range and

had initially thought of producing t-shirts. Terry has established himself with his jewellery in the UK and jewellery does not conflict with any of the other fashion labels I work with so it just seemed the perfect idea to launch our own range.”

The pair launched the range with a VIP party at Hotel La Tour.

martineau Place and Help Harry Help Others (HHHO) have broken a world record, constructing the world’s longest chain of beads.

With a final distance of an impressive 9,500 metres, the new record smashed the previous record of 8,668 metres. After a construction process which took over a week from start to finish, the impressive bracelet was pieced together on the roof of martineau Place claiming the record title in Harry moseley’s name.

michele Jones, centre manager at martineau Place, said: “It is a fantastic feeling to have achieved the record, especially after contending with the great british weather! Although we had to deviate from the original plan of wrapping the bracelet around the building, it’s been a fantastic team effort to pull this off and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with such a fantastic local charity.”

georgie moseley, Harry’s mother and chairman of HHHO, added: “Harry would be extremely chuffed to be a record breaker, so we hope we’ve done him proud.”Supporters of the charity who donated to the official Martineau Place Justgiving page ahead of the attempt will be rewarded with a bracelet, made up with official world record beating beads.

Donations are still being accepted at www.justgiving.com/martineauplace.

We chat to local lad and star of Jersey Boys Sam Ferriday ahead of the shows run this winter at The New Alexandra Theatre.

What drew you to the role of Bob Gaudio?I first saw the show on broadway with its original cast. I can remember turning to my dad saying how much I’d love to be a part of it once I was out of drama school. At that time I was looking closely at the swing member of the cast Norm Waxman who had various roles but also played drums on stage,

and being a drummer myself I saw myself suited to that part. I loved the show so much as it wasn’t your typical piece of musical theatre, this was first and foremost a play that was supported with music. Never did I think I’d actually be playing bob gaudio one day!

How much did you know about Frankie Valli and the Seasons before you got the part?I came into this show as a fan - I simply love their music, it’s timeless. When I was young I was introduced to the group’s music on a family outing up the Wrekin. During the car journey, my Nan put a cassette tape on and told me to listen. I heard the guitar intro, the drum fill and was swept away with the vocals of Frankie. This was the first song of the Four Seasons I’d ever heard and it was the classic, Sherry. The history of these guys was something I was never aware of until after I saw JERSEY bOYS - little did I know they had a great story to tell!

I was fortunate to meet Frankie and bob gaudio in Nashville when I went along to the Ryman Auditorium to see Frankie perform. That night I chased gaudio into a lift telling him I was about to play him, and he took me backstage to meet Frankie.

What do you find most challenging about the show? The biggest challenge is the vocals. my part has the second highest vocals to Frankie’s falsetto range and my voice knows it! To be able to perform this show eight times a week, you need a lot of water and rest. When it comes to dancing, although I like to think myself as a bit of a mover, being 6’2” I still sometimes feel a bit awkward! However our incredible Associate Choreographer Danny Austin brought me up to speed and made me feel at ease.

Which part of the show do you enjoy the most? The end of what we call the “big three” is a highlight - this is where you see us as a band at the height of our success. Also when Frankie sings Can’t Take my Eyes Off You which is a part where I am not even speaking but watching from the bridge. There’s a point in the song where Frankie and bob gaudio connect, and whilst we are simply looking at each other from afar, we are surrounded by an incredible atmosphere.

What will audiences take away with them after seeing the show? This is the true story, a rags to riches story showing the highs and lows of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. The music is a big reason why so many people come along in the first place, although many don’t realise how many hits they had and how many they will recognize. The audience will leave this show humming all night long!

Are you looking forward to performing to a home crowd?I can’t wait to be at the New Alexandra. This is the theatre I came to in my youth when I was first introduced to acting and the stage. I’ve seen so many shows here and it holds lots of fond memories. To have the opportunity to get up on that stage in front of what is pretty much a home crowd for me is one I am looking forward to. It’s going to be a very special end to the year!

High tea, high fashion and high spirits were in order at the Hyatt Regency birmingham as the city’s style lovers were treated to an evening of delicious high tea and fashion, all in aid of birmingham Children’s Hospital.

The fashion show consisted of the latest autumn and winter looks, modelled by ‘real women’ from the midlands.

The event raised £565 through ticket donations and an impressive raffle draw, which will go towards providing care for the patients at Hyatt’s charity partner, birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Elizabeth martin, director of events for Hyatt Regency Hotel, says: “It was wonderful to see women of all ages and all sizes coming together to share their passion for fashion and we’d like to thank all of our partners who contributed to making the event such a huge success.

“We’re delighted to have raised so much money for our charity partner. We feel really passionate about the support birmingham Children’s Hospital gives to patients and their families and we are looking forward to working closely with the team again for future fundraising events.

Stylist Libby Walton provided her expertise styling the models’ outfits whilst Image consultant, Tiffany Stafford, choreographed the show with maison grace from Captain Tortue and Classy Rags in bearwood supplying the models’ clothing. Puro Hair, based in birmingham City Centre, styled the models’ hair on the night and the Hyatt provided its Amala Spa staff to treat guests to complimentary hand massages.

Debonair Venue Styling was in charge of the Art Deco themed decoration, Arbonne International did the models’ makeup and gastrocard helped to promote the event.

LUCKY STRIKERI bet you’re on cloud nine aren’t you?

A. It’s just been unbelievable – as a lifelong Blues supporter, being a part of the set up, and now part of the first team, is a dream come true for me. My family live locally and their support, plus the support of the Club’s Academy system help keep you grounded.

You are quite a family man aren’t you?

Yes, I still live with my Mum and my sister, and they don’t let me get too big for my boots! I’ve been part of the Academy system since the U10s, and the club provides tremendous support.

How is it to live such a public existence at such a young age?

I’m very aware of my position as a role model for other young people. I’m always careful on social media and when I go into town. Misbehaving isn’t really an option with our training schedule and the healthy lifestyle we have to lead!

Who have been the main inspirations in your career so far?

In the Club, Nathan Redmond has been a mentor, friend and someone to aspire to – it’s been so helpful to have those sorts of players to look up to. On a global stage, I just love Christiano Ronaldo - he’s so talented and such a star; he’s on a different level to everyone else.

What has been the highlight of your career to date?

Oh, my first goal for the First team definitely! It was last season against

Blackburn, and it wasn’t a 30 yard strike or anything, but it trickled across the line and it was the proudest moment of my life

What do you like to do away from football?

The training and the matches keep you so busy and you need to take care of yourself - eat and drink right and have plenty of rest. However, I like going into Birmingham City Centre when I can – I like the Arcadian and places like Star City. I also particularly like movies – I like keeping up with the new releases, horror movies and comedies are my favourites.

You have achieved your dream early in life. What advice you would give to other young people?

Firstly, work hard – everyone thinks football is so glamorous and it can be, but they forget the unsocial hours, the constant training and the restrictions on your diet. It is very hard work. And whatever you want to do, you will have to be prepared to work hard to get there. Secondly, believe in yourself - if you have determination and talent, you can make it.

So what’s next for Demerai Gray?

Well, I take everything one step at a time. My first job is to secure my place in the first team, then I want to aim for the England U21s. I was fortunate enough to be picked to play in Germany for the U19s, which was a great experience, so now I want to move onto the larger stage of the U21s. And who knows? Maybe the senior team in time – that would be incredible. However, I just take it one day at a time – football is an amazing career but it is unpredictable and can be over in a flash.

Demerai Gray might be the Midlands’ luckiest 19 year old – not only is he the emerging star of Birmingham City Football Club’s first team but he is part of the England U19 set up AND he got Player of the Year Award from the Blues Players’ Academy. So how has he managed it?

Birmingham City Football Club are offering dluxe readers the chance to win a VIP hospitality package for four people including match tickets, a three-course meal in the Jasper Carrott suite at St. Andrew’s and a stadium tour.
