Sites Involved in Transport
Previous experience with/results from European R&D&I projects • DLR is an associate member of Shift2Rail JU • In Shift2Rail Cross-Cutting Activities and Activities in Innovation
Programs for Advanced Traffic Management & Control Systems Cost-efficient, Sustainable and Reliable High-Capacity Infrastructure Technologies for Sustainable & Attractive European Freight
• Previous projects: Roll2Rail, In2Rail, EUROSYSLIB

• Selected research topics from Roll2Rail:
Mass estimation based on topology optimization
Close-to-wheel direct drive for rail vehicles
Train-to-train communication of high-speed trains
• Continuation of research from previous projects in H2020, esp. in Roll2Rail • Research on rail vehicle technologies, such as
Hybrid propulsion technology (e.g. for battery electric or fuel cell vehicles) Technologies required for autonomous driving for
operation of regional/commuter trains on rural lines wagonload freight traffic (single wagons)
Research themes which the DLR is interested in exploring under Horizon 2020
> Successful R&I in Europe: 8th European Networking Event > Sebastian Streit > 2-3 March 2017

Example – Application of hybrid propulsions for emission-free train operation on non-electrified lines
• 46% of railway lines were non electrified in 2012 service typically provided by diesel traction with significant CO2-, NOx and particle emissions
• As part of the Helmholtz Association the DLR is periodically evaluated by international and independent experts
• DLR transfers knowledge from aerospace to rail and road transport
• DLR conducts applied research at TRL 1-6 and transfers technology to industry (e.g. fuel cell operated Alstom Coradia iLint)
The DLR’s scientific and technological expertise

Major facilities (e.g.) • Dynamic crash test facility for vehicle components • Aerodynamic test facilities for road and rail vehicles • Stationary experimental platform for thermal and
acoustic comfort in trains • Technical railway laboratories: RailSiTe© and RailSET • Bimodal test vehicle RailDriVE©
(Train tunnel simulation facility)
