SOUTH PORTLAND - Irving Clarence Prout, 85, of ' Anthoine Street died Sunday at a Portland hospital. ·

He was born in Waterbury, Conn., son o( Charles li and Edna Roberts Proul He attended Waterbury ' schools and was a graduate of South Portland High School.

During World War D and the ~rean War, Mr. Prout . served in the Army, and received several commendations.

He retired from the Maine Anny National Guard as a warrant officer.

He had been owner and operator of South Portland Fming Station Inc. since 1954.

He attended Methodist churches, was a 32nd degree member of Hiram Masonic Lodge and a member of Kora Temple Shrine.

1 He was a volunteer firefighter in South Portland for many years with Engine 8.

His wife, Dorothy Rockwell Prout, died in 1980. Surviving are a son, H. Rockwell Prout of Cape

Elizabeth; a sister, Carol Thuotte of South Portland; and a grandson, Jade Michael Prout of Cape Elizabeth.

• A private service will be held Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hobbs Funeral Home.

Kenneth /1 Prouty Sr., 86, of 17 Partridge Hoaa, founder ol the Portland Taxpayers 1\Ssociation, died Friday at a Portland hospital.

Mr. Prouly, who ser.•ed as the association's first president until he stepped down at age 79, organized the group to protest escalating Portland taxes. The associa­tion has evolved into Portland's largest organized government watchdog group, and its members regularly monitor Cily Council spending practices.

"We've all seen taxes gp up and up and up C\lel)' year," he told the Evening Express in 1983. "We plan to do some research into 11ve ry aspect of city government and if possi· ble get government ~g on a business­like basis. We'll do just about anything we can to liet the tax rate down." l Mr. Prouly added he bad a strong interest in local government for years and decided it was time to get involved

"' know so many peo-J!Ie are hurting," he said.

"An awful lot of peop.le who ha~ businesses and nice homes are thinking about selling their homes and moving out of town because of taxes."

Mr. Prouly was a memJJer of the WOOdtOi'dS coogre: gational Church and sponsored Boy Scout activities in the chW'Ch. He also served as representative to the Pine Tree Council, Boy Scouts of America.

He was a member of the Baskohegan Lodge of Masons in Danforth, the Scottish Rites Bodies or

Portland, and Kora Temple Shrine of Lewiston. He was a Conner member of the Kora Shrine clubs of Portland and Auburn-Lewiston. the Gorham Counlly Club, the Port· land Rotary Club and Woodfords Club of Portland

Surviving are a son, Kenneth A. Jr. of Boxford, Mass.: and two grandsons.

His wife, Freda Weaver, died in 1989. A gra\'eside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday

in the Memorial Garden section of Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Hay Funeral Home,
