Making Connections = Increasing Awareness

Page 8: DLI in Action. Putting Teen Pregnancy on Pause Champion Forrest Alton SC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy

1. Created a postcard series (Core 84) so constituents could show they are part of the Core 84% of South Carolinians who support comprehensive sex education. More than 365 postcards have been sent to elected Legislators and Superintendents.

2. DLI alumni have been hosts of our annual fundraiser and awareness event at Pearlz in Columbia: Rhonda Midgette, Clare Folio Morris, Charles Weathers, Lee Pearson, and Alan Cooper.

3. In 2012, Mayor Steve Benjamin declared May Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month in the City of Columbia.

4. SC Campaign staff presented to Greenwood Rotary Club (85 people) because of Richard Whiting.

5. Alan Cooper interviewed Forrest for his publications – Midlandsbiz.com, Upstatebiz.com, and LowCountrybiz.com, which reached 12,000 people across the state.

6. Andy Brack has covered the issue of teen pregnancy prevention in the Statehouse Report multiple times.

7. Howard Boyd and Stewart Spinx sponsored a breakfast in Greenville County for community leaders.

What else have we been doing?

Page 9: DLI in Action. Putting Teen Pregnancy on Pause Champion Forrest Alton SC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy

1. Continue to advocate for implementation of age-appropriate, research proven sex education in our public schools.

Become part of the “CORE 84”

2. Continue to raise awareness of this issue and encourage communities to move to action!

Do you have a community group we can speak to?

Where do we go from here?

RESEARCH TELLS US…*Reading and literacy are foundational to school and life success;

Early reading aloud makes a difference. Exposure to words in books at a very young age can change the achievement trajectory for students (Hart & Risley, Meaningful Differences, 1995);

Independent reading matters. As few as 15 minutes per day has been shown to impact reading achievement (response to National Reading Panel, 2004);

* Poverty affects both early reading in the home, as well as access to books for independent reading.

LIVI’s LIBRARY:

Building readers one child at a time

Page 36: DLI in Action. Putting Teen Pregnancy on Pause Champion Forrest Alton SC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy

OUR OWN SC RESEARCH TELLS US …

*Children born into conditions where the following risk factors are present are more likely to experience school failure by age 9:

1 in 5 children in SC lives in poverty; 4 in 10 of these children are NOT successful by grade 3 1 in 4 children in SC is born to a mother with less than a high school education; these children are nearly TWICE as likely to experience early school failure

1 in 8 children in SC is born to a teen mother; nearly 40% of these children are low achievers by age 9

3% of children in SC suffer from abuse or neglect before age 3; 52% of these children are unsuccessful by grade 3

Page 37: DLI in Action. Putting Teen Pregnancy on Pause Champion Forrest Alton SC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy

SUCCESSFUL LITERACY and EARLY READING INITIATIVES …

*Meet families and children where they go every day(school, child care, doctor, church, library);

*Should focus on early childhood and primary reading to have the greatest effect on student achievement;

*Need to be sustainable and not “one time events;”

*Are relationship-based and locally-driven; should be “glued together” to reach families effectively.

“Sharing Livi’s love of reading”

Page 39: DLI in Action. Putting Teen Pregnancy on Pause Champion Forrest Alton SC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy

You can help. The idea is so simple…

Through community partnerships, Livi’s Library collects gently-used, high quality children’s books for children birth to age 12.

Volunteers sort and host “free book fairs” at schools and preschools; or place Livi’s Library bookcases in areas where our most vulnerable children and families are served.

Each child selects two free books to take home and keep, building her independent reading collection.
