Most of the lighting fixtures in our countries are outdated and obsolete.

The recovery of energy efficiency appears to be a major factor in the consideration of the LED source as an alternative to the existing one.

The use of LED technology in the municipal area can be used for street lighting fixtures but also for lighting road bike paths, walkways, gardens, parks, common areas, parking lots, etc..

When we speak about percentage energy saving of the LED fixture to

the standard existing lamp, we mean how much the new LED light can

save giving as a target the respect of the lighting class of the

EN13201.

Until few times ago, the choice of one light fixture rather then another

was made considering aesthetic and performances. Sometimes this

choice appears exceeded.

If, for example, sphere light fixtures are replaced ( emitting on 360°)

the recovery of the energy efficient will be probably the max. possible.

We can therefore say that the use of LED light fixtures can improve the

efficiency between 30 and 70% depending on the individual case.

How much you can save in percentage terms by replacing the existing lighting with LED technology?


Using LED lights on new systems can achieve interesting saving levels in consideration of the 2 following issue:

Reduction of one lighting category thanks to the high colorimetric index ( italian law UNI11248 )

Actual availability of led fixtures with “real” efficiency of more then 70 Lm/Watt

Since there is no rules on which information have to appear on the catalog of the LED streetlight manufacturers or importers, we assist to a different and sometimes misleading information..

The efficiency declared in the catalog (for example 100lm/watt or 5500 lm/watt if the lamp has 55 Leds) is related to the LED efficiency at the JCT of 25°C ( as declared by the manufacturer) or to the lamp in working conditions ?

Therefore, the LED efficiency is inversely proportional to the Junction Temperature It is surely important using LEDs with high efficiency but it is also important that the

lamp is equipped with a good heatsink so that the Led can keep a high level of performances.


Another important factor is the expectation in the life of the LED and also here it is necessary to clarify some important matters.

The life of the LEDs depends on several factors: Kind and Brand of the used LED. On the market are probably

thousands of manufacturers but only some of them can guarantee reliability, performance over the time.

As the LED is driven and heat sinked. The junction temperature is the key to understand how long can work the led.

The LED package and which reliability has the led once mounted on the printed circuit board.

3. Life time of the LED

LED life can change from 50.000 to more then 100.000 hrs according

to which kind of led is used and from the junction temperature.

The life of the Led fixture depends not only on the above mentioned

factors but also on which kind of led driver is used and if additional

electronic circuit are present.

A led driver is reliable if it is certified and if the MTBF is declared.

3. Conclusion


The reduction of maintenance costs is referred basically to the life of the LED source, which we have evaluated in 3-6 times greater then the traditional sources.

The reduction of the maintenance is also given by the fact the the Led is a cold light, meaning that the light going our of the lamp is cool. For that reason it attracts less insects.

Several studies argue that there are many advantages of the LED light

compared on the old light.

We will mention few of them without make specific comments since the technical aspects of the vision can be debated.
