YOUR ITINERARY
Day 1: Board your overnight flight to Milan!
Day 2: Verona | Venice
Arrive in Milan and Transfer to Venice via Verona
Transfer by way of Romeo and Juliet's Verona, known for its couplets
and Capulets! Here you can see the town's Roman Arena, which
dates back over 2,000 years. You will also find a bronze statue of
Juliet in the tiny courtyard that houses the balcony made famous by
Shakespeare.
Free Time in Verona (time permitting)
Enjoy free time to explore Verona on your own. You might enjoy a visit
to the Arena di Verona, a Roman amphitheater that now hosts
summer opera performances. The Castelvecchio, former home of the
Della Scala princes, is now an art museum housing Northern Italian
masterpieces and relics from Verona's Roman past. Otherwise, enjoy
time at leisure to enjoy Verona's local cuisine, shop or people-watch.
Transfer to Venice
Arrive in magical Venice, home of Marco Polo. Known globally for its
gondoliers and glassware, Venice is also a heady mix of busy piazzas
thronging with pizzerias and cafes, as well as deserted streets
alongside canals that often lead to hidden gems such as churches or
local restaurants serving regional delicacies.
Overnight in Venice
Day 3: Venice
Guided Sightseeing of Venice
Begin your sightseeing of la Serenissima (the city's nickname meaning
“the most serene”) at St. Mark's Square, “the finest drawing room in
Europe,” according to Napoleon. Allegedly buried under the altar of
the basilica are St. Mark's remains, which, in the 11th century, were
smuggled out of Alexandria in a barrel of salt pork to prevent a
thorough search by the city's Muslim guards. Also, see the Grand
Canal and the 324-foot Campanile (Bell Tower), whose steps were
originally built so that a noble could ascend on horseback. Look for
the clock where two bronze figures have been striking the hour for
over 500 years. Venice is also famous for its glassware-you'll see why
during a glassblowing demonstration.
Visit the Doges' Palace
Visit the grand 14th century pink and white Doges' Palace, from
which mighty Venetian dukes once ruled. Here you'll stroll over the
Bridge of Sighs, connecting the palace and its prison. As they
crossed the bridge, prisoners supposedly sighed with perfect
sadness as they regarded their beautiful city for the last time.
Casanova made a daring escape from this prison in 1756. (Please
note that your ticket also includes free entrance to Museo Correr, the
National Archaeological Museum and the Monumental Rooms of the
Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana)
Free Time in Venice
The afternoon is yours to explore wondrous Venezia. Stroll along the
intertwining canals, or venture into the labyrinth of streets crammed
with restaurants and shops. Alternatively, you might wish to take in
the views from the Rialto Bridge. Otherwise, enjoy a truly romantic
experience and ride in one of the city's many gondolas along some of
its finest canals.
Overnight in Venice
Day 4: Florence
Transfer to Florence
Set deep in the heart of Tuscany is one of Italy's jewels. The city of
Florence has delighted visitors for centuries with its remarkable
architecture. Whether sitting by the River Arno, strolling the beautifully
housed streets or viewing the renaissance masterpieces that fill the
city's churches and museums, one can only be astonished by the
feeling of true beauty.
Guided Sightseeing of Florence
Fall under the spell of the powerful Medici family on your guided tour.
See Giotto's Bell Tower and the imposing marble cathedral in the
Piazza del Duomo. Stand before Ghiberti's legendary Gates of
Paradise (so dubbed by Michelangelo), and pass the classical statues
of the Piazza della Signoria- here you can see where Michelangelo's
David originally stood. Later, watch local artisans at work at a local
leather workshop.
Overnight in Florence
Day 5: Cinque Terre
Transfer to Cinque Terre
Continue on to the five villages of Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore,
Vernazza and Montessoro, which comprise the Cinque Terre (five
lands) region. These coastal towns, inaccessible by car, offer a
glimpse back to another age with their quaint vineyards and beautiful
views across the bay of Genoa.
Visit the Cinque Terre
With your tour director, you will explore some of the five villages of
Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore, Vernazza, and Monterosso, which
comprise the Cinque Terre (five lands) region. These coastal towns,
inaccessible by car, offer a glimpse back to another age with their
quaint vineyards and beautiful view across the bay of Genoa
Overnight in Cinque Terre
Day 6: Monaco | French Riviera
Transfer to the French Riviera via Monaco
Travel to the spectacular coastline of the glamorous French Riviera,
land of sparkling waters, waving palm trees and sun-drenched
promenades. Before checking into your hotel, stop in Monaco,
Walking Tour of Monaco
Follow your tour director through Monaco, a speck of a principality
that packs wealth, royalty, and the world's most famous casino into
just 0.8 square miles. The Grimaldi family has ruled Monaco since
1297, making them the longest-reigning family dynasty in Europe. See
the palace and pass by the Cathédrale de Monaco, site of Prince
Rainier's wedding to Grace Kelly in 1956. The cathedral is also the
final resting place of both Prince Rainier and Princess Grace, who was
killed in a car accident in the hills of Monaco in 1982. Catch a glimpse
of the stately casino as you stroll the streets with your tour director.
The aura of mystique that surrounds the Monte-Carlo casino stems in
part from Mata Hari, the professional dancer-turned-Dutch-spy who
once shot a Russian spy inside the ornate landmark.
Arrive in Nice and transfer to the French Riviera
Arrive in Nice, the `Queen of the Riviera.' Many believe the name of
the town, which was founded by Greek mariners in 350 B.C., derives
from a great territorial victory realized here (the Greek word for victory
is nike). You will then transfer to your hotel situated in the glamorous
French Rivera - land of deep blue waters, waving palm trees and sun
drenched promenades. Favored resort of the rich and famous, you
can join the paparazzi on the lookout for celebrities.
Overnight in French Riviera
Day 7: French Riviera
Guided Sightseeing of Nice
Your local guide recounts fascinating anecdotes about Nice's history.
In the Old City, or Vieille Ville, see Nice's highest concentration of
architectural treasures characterized by decorate friezes, bas-reliefs
and trompe-œil. Locals are proud of their past and have pursued an
aggressive policy of preservation and restoration. Walk through the
narrow, winding streets and cobble-stoned alleyways, passing by
colorful outdoor markets, and through tiny squares filled with
boulangeries, pâtisseries, cafés and quaint shops.
Visit a Perfume Factory
Stop in Eze, a small medieval town perched on a cliff high above the
waters of the Mediterranean. Here you'll enjoy a guided tour of a
perfume factory.
Overnight in French Riviera
Day 9: Carcassonne | Barcelona
Travel to Barcelona via Carcassonne
Walking Tour of Carcassonne
Relive medieval times as your Tour Director leads you past the city's
age-old ramparts (which slowly turned to ruin after falling to the
Crusaders in the 13th century). Carcassonne is also home to
Europe's largest and most-complete medieval fortress.
Arrive in Barcelona
Arrive in Barcelona, Spain's second-largest city. As the capital of
fiercely nationalistic Cataluña, Barcelona was the hotbed of resistance
under the rule of General Franco and celebrates its unique identity
through its language, its increasingly influential government, and on
the global stage, as host to the 1992 Olympic Games.
Overnight in Barcelona
Day 10: Barcelona
Guided Sightseeing of Barcelona
Your guided tour takes you past the controversial and still unfinished
La Sagrada Familia (the Church of the Holy Family). This masterpiece
of twisting spires and colorful mosaics was designed by Gaudí, who
estimated it would take 200 years to complete. You'll also stroll the
narrow lanes of the 14th-century Barrio Gótico, the oldest surviving
part of the city. Continue on to Gaudi's masterpiece, the fantasyland
of Parc Guell, complete with a bright mosaic lizard fountain and the
longest bench in the world. Then enjoy a marvelous harbor view from
atop Montjuïc Hill, where much of the 1992 Olympics took place.
Bike Tour of Barcelona
This is your chance to take in the sights and sounds of Barcelona as
you enjoy a wonderful bike tour of the city´s main attractions. Your
tour guide will give you a brief introduction to your day and your fellow
cyclists. You will see Gaudii sites, Parc de la Ciutadella, Barcelona
Cathedral, Arc de Triomphe and many other places!
Tapas Dinner
Tonight you can enjoy the culinary delights of Spain's famous tapas.
Coming from the verb tapar (to cover) you will sample local finger
foods that range from the tame (breads and cheeses) to the
adventurous (exotic meats and seafood). Feasting on tapas is the
quintessential Spanish experience!
