Introduction 7

devolo dLAN 200 AV Wireless N

2.2 What is WLAN?WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) refers to the useof radio technology to network computers and otherdevices. While it is possible to wirelessly connect com-puters in pairs (peer-to-peer, p2p), a central accesspoint is required to set up a network of multiple devic-es. Such access points are frequently combined in asingle device with modems for Internet access androuters to manage network traffic.

The wireless network established by an access pointusing a specific channel (from 1 to 13) and name (SSID)has a limited range. The range of the access point, which is also known as a "radio cell", is impeded bybuilding walls. In some cases, stable connections areoften only possible between WLAN devices within asingle room.

As it is not possible to rely on hardware such as net-work cables (in a LAN) or household wiring (in a dLAN)to control access to a WLAN, wireless networking nat-urally presents special security challenges. WLANstherefore use a number of security measures, such as aconcealed network name, data encryption and accesscontrol via the MAC addresses of the network adapt-ers.

2 IntroductiondLAN is an intelligent, secure technology that lets youset up a home network easily, quickly and economical-ly via your household electrical wiring, without theneed for complex and expensive dedicated cabling. The available performance and effort required for theinstallation also compares favourably to traditionalmethods—dLAN technology now attains speeds youwould expect from other LAN technologies, and install-ing it is a breeze!

2.1 What exactly is dLAN? dLAN (direct Local Area Network) uses the householdpower grid to transfer data between computersequipped with suitable adapters and other networkcomponents. As a result, any power outlet can be usedas a network access point. The data is modulated priorto transfer and sent as a signal via household powerlines. State-of-the-art technology ensures that thepower and data networks do not interfere with one an-other. Networking via dLAN is fast and secure. Thedata is encrypted using a key to prevent easy intercep-tion by third parties.

Page 9: dLAN 200 AV Wireless N - devolo€¦ · Introduction 7 devolo dLAN 200 AV Wireless N 2Introduction dLAN is an intelligent, secure technology that lets you set up a home network easily,

2.4 Example applicationThe dLAN 200 AV Wireless N is a WLAN access pointand makes the dLAN network connected via the mainsoutlet available wirelessly to other client devices, suchas laptops, IP radios or IP telephones.

This is particularly practical if not all client stations arewithin range of a WLAN access point, for examplebecause concrete walls disrupt the signal. With dLAN,however, various rooms can be easily connected viathe mains supply. And using adLAN 200 AV Wireless N, you can quickly and easilyturn every mains outlet into a WLAN connection withexcellent reception quality.

The following illustration shows how thedLAN 200 AV Wireless N is used to establish a connec-tion to the Internet and within the home network foradditional dLAN 200 AV devices and a router.

2.3 What does the adapter offer you?

With the dLAN 200 AV Wireless N, you can quicklyand easily establish connections between WLAN, dLANand LAN:

As a WLAN access point, the adapter establishescommunication between your WLAN devices andan existing LAN or dLAN network. In this way, forexample, you can expand your wireless network inno time to rooms that otherwise could not bereached by wireless.

As a dLAN device, the dLAN 200 AV Wireless Nhas three LAN jacks for directly connecting threenetwork devices to the dLAN.

By combining the LAN, dLAN and WLAN stand-ards, you will become totally independent of exist-ing network access points. Instead, you arecompletely free to connect all your devices eithervia a power supply socket, LAN or wirelessly. Bysimply reconnecting yourdLAN 200 AV Wireless N, you can expand orreconfigure your home network at any time, e.g.simply by taking the adapter along into anotherroom to work.

Network configuration 29

devolo dLAN 200 AV Wireless N

In the factory defaults of thedLAN 200 AV Wireless N, the WLANfunction is enabled and the WPA2 WLANencryption is set with the security ID asthe standard WLAN key. You will find the16-character security ID on the label onthe back of the housing.

For operation as an access point, a (transmission)channel must be specified. There are 13 channelsavailable. We recommend keeping the default settingAuto, since in this setting the dLAN 200 AV Wireless Nselects the channel regularly and independently. Inother words, if the last connected station logs out, asearch for a suitable channel is carried out immediate-ly. If no stations are connected, the device automatical-ly selects a channel every 15 minutes.

The SSID specifies the name of your wireless network. You can see this name when logging onto the WLANand thereby identify the correct subnet. If you enablethe Hide SSID option, your wireless network remainshidden. In this case, potential network users mustknow the exact SSID and enter it manually to be ableto set up a connection.

4.5.1 Access pointSince the dLAN 200 AV Wireless N acts as an accesspoint, you have to configure various parameters foryour wireless network. If you would like, you can com-pletely shut off the WLAN part of yourdLAN 200 AV Wireless N, e.g. if you want to operate itexclusively as a simple dLAN device via the built-inEthernet connections. To do so, switch off the EnableWLAN option under Status overview WLAN sta-tions, or simply press the WLAN ON/OFF button onthe housing.

Keep in mind that after saving this set-ting, you will be disconnected from anyexisting wireless connection to thedLAN 200 AV Wireless N. In this case, configure the device via Ethernet ordLAN.

When activating the encryption, make sure that theWLAN settings (SSID, encryption mode and encryptionkey) of the access point always correspond to the set-tings of the clients, as otherwise you will be (uninten-tionally) excluding devices from your network.

Page 31: dLAN 200 AV Wireless N - devolo€¦ · Introduction 7 devolo dLAN 200 AV Wireless N 2Introduction dLAN is an intelligent, secure technology that lets you set up a home network easily,

into hexadecimal format first (as with WEP).Under Mode, you can limit access of clients to thedLAN 200 AV Wireless N to the method you haveselected.

Save all modified settings before leaving this configu-ration area again.

You should always encrypt the connec-tions in your WLAN. Otherwise anyonewithin range could penetrate into yourhome network and, for example, shareyour Internet connection. Always selectthe better WPA2 encryption method ifpossible. Use WEP only if one of yourwireless terminal devices does not op-erate with a better standard.

30 Network configuration

devolo dLAN 200 AV Wireless N

Some WLAN adapters have difficulty con-necting to such hidden wireless networks. Ifthe connection to a hidden SSID poses prob-lems, first try to set up the connection with avisible SSID and only then try to hide it.

Without encryption, not only are all data transmittedfrom client computers to the dLAN 200 AV Wireless Nin your wireless network without protection, but thereis also no password prompt to establish the connec-tion. If no other security measures were set up, such asa WLAN filter (see Chapter 4.5.2 WLAN filters), thirdparties can gain access to your network at any timeand, for example, share your Internet connection. Usu-ally this happens without you noticing it.

To secure the data transmission in your wireless net-work there are two security standards available.

The older and weaker WEP standard can protectcommunication with the help of a key havingeither 10 or 26 characters. To do so, enter aseries of hexadecimal characters with the corre-sponding number of characters into the Key field.

The state-of-the-art WPA and WPA2 (Wi-Fi Pro-tected Access) methods allow individualised keysconsisting of letters and numbers with a lengthof up to 63 characters. You can simply enter thisusing the keyboard, without having to convert it

You can easily determine the MAC address of a Win-dows computer by opening the window with the com-mand prompt under Start All Programs Accessories Command Prompt. Enter the com-mand IPCONFIG /ALL here. The MAC address is dis-played under the designation Physical address.

After entering the MAC addresses, do not forget toclick the Save button. If the entered values are incor-rect (e.g. because the colons are missing), a corre-sponding error message is displayed.

Keep in mind that you also have to en-ter the MAC address of your own com-puter if you are connected to thedLAN 200 AV Wireless N not via theEthernet port, but via WLAN. Other-wise you will block your own access tothe device via WLAN by activating theWLAN filter!

The WLAN filter should be used only asan additional option. By using it youcould limit access to your wireless net-work, but without encryption it wouldbe relatively easy for third parties toeavesdrop on all of your data transmis-sions.

To use the WLAN filter, enable the option Enable fil-ters. Now you can enter various network devices bymeans of what is known as your MAC address for ac-cess to your dLAN 200 AV Wireless N. Confirm eachentry with Add. Network devices or stations connectedto your dLAN 200 AV Wireless N are automatically list-ed, that is, to enable an already connected station forthe dLAN 200 AV Wireless N, simply select the MACaddress of the respective device and confirm it withAdd. This then appears under Approved WLAN sta-tions. To remove an enabled station, select its MACaddress and confirm it with Delete.

The MAC address designates the hardwareinterface of each individual network deviceuniquely (e.g. the WLAN adapter of a com-puter or the Ethernet port of a printer). It con-sists of six double-digit hexadecimalnumbers, each separated by a colon (e.g.00:0B:3B:37:9D:C4). The MAC address is onthe housing of the device.

4.5.3 WLAN time controlTo be able to use the WLAN time con-trol, the option Retrieve date and timeautomatically must be enabled underDevice configuration Date and time. Anactive Internet connection is also re-quired. (see 4.4.4 Time server)

To be able to use the WLAN time control, enable theoption Enable time control. The time control auto-matically switches your wireless network on and off atcertain times of the day.

You can define two time periods during which yourwireless network is to be enabled for each weekday. Then the time control automatically switches the wire-less network on or off.

Keep in mind that, as long as thedLAN 200 AV Wireless N registers con-nected stations, the wireless networkremains enabled. The wireless net-work is not switched off until the laststation has logged off.

5.1 dLAN Cockpitdevolo dLAN Cockpit is a monitoring and encryptionprogram that detects all reachable dLAN AV devices inyour home network and combines them in a securenetwork. Due to its logical graphic design, thedLAN Cockpit is easy and intuitive to operate. Afterinstalling the devolo software, it can be found in theStart Programs devolo program group.

5 Security in the dLANBefore you can use the dLAN 200 AV Wireless N inyour dLAN network, first you have to connect it to otherdLAN 200 AV devices as a home network. Two specificpieces of information are especially important for this:

Shared use of a dLAN password results in a delim-ited dLAN network.

Shared use of the dLAN password serves as accesscontrol to the dLAN network as well as theencryption, and thereby the interception protec-tion, of the transmitted data.

The dLAN password can be specified automatically viathe encryption button or manually using thedLAN Cockpit program. Please note the following ba-sic principle when choosing your encryption method:

In dLAN 200 AV networks, data encryption is assimple as touching a button, since all corre-sponding dLAN 200 AV devices areequipped with an encryption button.

For dLAN 200 AV networks that include deviceswith and without encryption buttons, dataencryption must be set up using the dLAN Cock-pit.
