If it takes a special combination of circumstances to create a knockout soul singer, it needs near impossible happenstance to uncover one. Ms Murphy – the fiery and heartbreaking stage persona of Karen Andrews – has found out first-hand how such circumstances fall into place. From her childhood kicking around housing commission ‘burbs outside Sydney, to the flashbulbs of primetime on The Voice, it’s been a long and arduous road to her debut before the nation. But it all becomes clear why in the celebratory brass tones of Ms Murphy’s debut single, Ritual Union, and in the song’s first vocal notes … “deep as a river yet calling to the heavens”. A blindsiding cover of the 2011 Indie hit from Swedish outfit Little Dragon, Ritual Union teams Ms Murphy up with club-hopping gang The Bamboos, and their ringleader (the song’s producer) Lance Ferguson, to deliver something quite unexpected and very out of the ordinary. It was in a hall – a church hall – that Ms Murphy discovered the depths of her voice. As a young woman she dedicated herself to gospel hymns, and was called upon to lead the church band as music director. This was a natural fit after growing up around her mother’s large Polynesian family, which instilled in her the power of music in bringing people together. This leadership role also informed, in large part, Ms Murphy’s musical education. She calls upon the music she loved as a young girl – soul and old-school R&B. In the crowded Andrews’ family home in Koonawarra, a young Ms Murphy listened to her brother’s Motown records and to the satin voice of Stevie Wonder. Singing along to such golden hits, interposed with traditional Polynesian songs, was simply part of everyday family life. “It was very mature music for my age – and for where I grew up, too,” Ms Murphy says. “So I grew up fast, musically.” The great influences Ms Murphy took from those records can be heard in Ritual Union. The song is hand-raising revelry, brimming with heartache. “A lot of the Motown records sound happy, but if you actually look at the lyrics, they’re quite heartbreaking,” she says. “They were able to fuse a lot of joy and sorrow, and that’s very clever and unique, and it’s uncommon to do that easily.”
Watch Ms Murphy perform songs off her album at the Main Stage at 9pm

They say stars are born not made and there’s no denying Ella Hooper has always been special. The Victoria-born artist is a singer-songwriter, radio presenter and TV personality. She was 13 when she emerged onto the entertainment scene as the lead singer of Killing Heidi with older brother Jesse in 1996.The rise and rise of the Hooper siblings started from humble beginnings. They grew up in the small rural township Violet Town, 175km north of Melbourne with a population of 950. As the children of an English teacher and a drama teacher, Ella was encouraged to develop her songwriting skills while Jesse became a guitarist very early on.After nishing Violet Town Primary School, Ella travelled 27km by bus to attend Benalla College until Year 11.She wrote and performed songs for a 1996 Triple J competition and won with a song called Kettle then moved to Melbourne when Killing Heidi was signed to a record label. Ella left secondary schooling to concentrate on touring Killing Heidi after the release of their rst single, Weir, which peaked at number six on the Australian charts in August 1999. Killing Heidi’s biggest hits also included Mascara and Live Without It. At the peak of Killing Heidi’s success, Ella won four ARIA Awards in 2000 including Album of the Year for Re ector, Best Group, Breakthrough Artist – Album and Best Rock Group. The siblings were awarded an APRA in 2001 for Songwriter of the Year. The band broke up in 2006 and Ella and Jesse performed at small venues as an acoustic band called The Verses.Ella is now a radio presenter on 2DayFM and she is one of the two captains in the revival of the ABC television show Spicks and Specks. She released her rst solo single Low High in 2012 with producer Jan Skubizewski (Owl Eyes, Illy, Way Of The Eagle) in his Collingwood studio.Ella’s third single, The Red Shoes, was release in June along with her debut album In Tongues.

It’s been a whirlwind 12 months for Melbourne’s favourite sons of song, the Pierce Brothers. Their buzzing live act recently sold out four shows at Shebeen, also gigs at Cherry Bar, Ding Dong and Westernport Hotel. Comprising of brothers Jack and Pat, the Pierce boys are also celebrating their incredible debut on the ARIA charts, landing at number 21 with their EP, The Night Tree, and a place on the top five Alt iTunes chart. The ARIA makes them the highest selling independent act in Australia and highest ARIA chart debut for a local act – an impressive feat for the twins, who have no label or major radio play under their belts. The first single from the release, It’s My Fault, captures the world‐class harmonies, pop hooks and unique melody that is sending these two soaring to new heights. In the past 12 months, the charismatic indie‐folk duo have played shows to thousands of fans in Australia and Europe. On their travels they‘ve sold more than 25,000 CDs, a staggering one-year result, and all independently. With a particularly huge fanbase in the Netherlands due to radio play on 3FM, plus their addition to the sold-out international Lowlands festival lineup, 2014 is fast becoming the year of Pierce Brothers. This is a great Aussie music story that is only just beginning – from busking on Bourke Street, Melbourne to an around the world journey. The buzz on the street about Pierce Brothers is exploding.
The Pierce Brothers will take to the Main Stage at 7pm

Darren Middleton is best known for his previous manifestation as guitarist and songwriter for Australian band Powder nger. The much-loved band played its last show in late 2010 and, unsurprisingly, Darren has spent some time in a creative and emotional wilderness. For 20 years, Powder nger was as much about who he was as what he did. When the time was right, Darren emerged from the creative trough and started working as a producer from a new home in the creative hub of downtown Melbourne. From here the rst seeds were planted for his debut solo album Translations. Translations is classic alternative pop, music that lives somewhere between the worlds of The Beatles and Elliot Smith.
AdamnotEve magazine critics raved about its release: “Middleton has clearly confronted some demons,” one states. “‘I may not know where this will lead,’ he sings in the David Bridie-like Failing Now, ‘…cause everything that I believed in is failing now’. Middleton has not only survived the Powder nger split but has grown beyond it. Nothing has been lost in these translations and a lot has been gained,” the critic said.Another wrote: “The beautiful, concise, straight up-and-down production of Translations is breathtakingly clear and sits together perfectly. Each small part of every track is obviously thought about very intricately, as everything seems to just fall handsomely into place … a joy.” See Darren Middleton on the Main Stage at 5pm

If Melbourne’s alternative rock band Zoophyte sounds familiar, it’s probably because they’ve been writing music and playing gigs since 2004. Always evolving, the band’s indelible sounds, unmistakable raw vocals and interesting guitar interplay, have helped build a reputation as an explosive live act.The band has shared stages with the likes of Eskimo Joe, Grinspoon, You Am I, and INXS. The four-piece unit’s breakthrough in 2012 came with the release of the album Somewhere Elsewhere, from which three singles – Let You Go, Early Mourning and Free The Light – were released.
Feverishly determined to never make the same record twice, the band bunkered down in the studio for the rst half of 2014 and have resurfaced with a brand new production. Elaborating on the large sounds of previous releases, the results are something different, yet still Zoophyte, with their raw energy and dark romantic sound, remain the hallmark. Being engineered and produced with Cam Trewin and mastered by Brian Lucey, you can expect a bolder, edgier, bigger sound from the Zoophyte boys, including their rst single The Empire.Hear the new single live on the Main Stage at 6pm

It features more than 20 dragons, some with wing spans of up to 14 metres; Viking warriors; and world-class circus artists and acrobats, performing against state-of-the-art, wall-to- oor immersive projections measuring more than 1860 square metres. The scope and scale of the rest of the production is equally awe-inspiring. Cutting-edge video and projection design transforms each arena into a stunning fantasy world. Special effects and soaring music complete the journey into other worlds. The animatronic technology and large-scale cinematic projections interact seamlessly with the live actors to bring the stories of worlds beyond reality to life.

A couple who have taken advantage of the service Choice Fresh Meals offers are Jack and Mavis Kennedy. Both 86, the couple decided to try Choice Fresh Meals after Mavis had heard good reports from friends. “I belong to seniors and we began talking about meals one day and someone said they were using the company and we decided to give it a try”, Mavis said.
“The main reason we did it was that if anything happens to me, Jack would struggle to carry on with preparing food. And the same goes for me if something happened to Jack. It’s a nice break from cooking every night and they have a large choice of meals…everyone has something they don’t like, so it is nice to have a good range to choose from.”
“We have tried a few different services, but we are very happy with Choice Fresh Meals,” Mavis said.
“It’s conveniently delivered to us by Choice Fresh Meals who also now deliver fresh bread and milk and I look forward to not having to cook for the three nights… it’s a nice break.
