Eid Mubarak!

With the heat officially in full force, it’s time to break out your bathing suits and get ready to find your own chill this summer. While a lot of us turn into hermits and hide inside our air-conditioned cocoons this time of the year; we’ve decided to shake things up with a Summer issue that’s filled to the brim with funtivities.

It’s Eid season and families all over Jeddah are gearing up to celebrate what is arguably our biggest holiday. After Eid, for those of you heading out of the country: may your passports be with you; and for those staying in: we’ve got you covered. We have come up with a list of fun activities for you. Don’t forget to check out the videos we have through our AR+ app and see the lengths we’ll go to keep you entertained.

For the foodies among you, let us be your guide as you navigate your way through the best restaurants in Jeddah. As you can tell, we’ve stuffed this issue with enough activities to last you the entire summer.

There’s no excuse not to take advantage of your city this month. Our mission here is to help you connect with your city and to create memories of a life lived to its full potential.

TIFFANY UNVEILED SPECIAL INITIATIVE FOR THE HOLY MONTH Tiffany revealed a special partnership

with Dar Al Hekma to activate the Keys for a Cause initiative, which underlines

the importance of education as the most powerful asset enabling women to “unlock their potentials.” From June 4 –

Sept. 30, everyone can visit Tiffany & Co. at Jeddah Boulevard to contribute to the

cause by donating SR 250 in exchange for a symbolic key or receiving one upon

making a purchase of SR 2,500 and above. All proceeds will go to the

university’s scholarship fund.

THE UBER KIRI PROJECTUber launched a Ramadan project this year by partnering up with Kiri to help share iftar. It involved delivering food boxes packed by customers for free by moving the choice slider to “UberKIRI” on the app. This would automatically have a driver head the customer’s way to collect the packages.

Reporting Crimes and Incidents Just a Click AwayThe Public Security Department launched a mobile app called “Kulluna Amn” (the security of all of us) that helps make reporting crimes/incidents easier for citizens and expatriates in Saudi.

It allows users to attach pictures, video

and audio files and choose the incident location. You can report accidents, crimes, bad driving behavior etc. It can even help you if someone parks behind your car and leaves, blocking your way. You just have to take a photo of the car and the license plate and upload it via this app and they should be able to fine the owner of the car. This app intends to help facilitate rescue efforts and limit damages and losses in cases of accidents or crimes.

Doroob’s global campaign honors refugees and invites people to share how to give or seek refuge. By Sumaiyya Naseem

DOROOB’S SEEKINGREFUGE CAMPAIGN

Stage OneThe Chalkboard Conversation helped the public practice emotional intelligence. Chalkboards were set up in various campaigns and organizations for people to give their perspective on the ways they seek or provide refuge. The heartfelt responses showed their emotional intimacy in caring for others.

In honor of the United Nations World Refuge Day, Doroob collaborated with Six Seconds to launch the global campaign, Seeking Refuge.

In the light of geopolitical tensions, Doroob’s campaign highlights the giving and seeking of refuge as a shared human experience. Doroob’s campaign objective was to empower the youth and Doroob Ambassadors, and to raise awareness about emotional intelligence.

The Seeking Refuge campaign took place on

an impressive global scale with 410 Seeking Refuge volunteer facilitators and over 18,000 participants.

Stage TwoThe Seeking Refuge Dialogue brought together people from various walks of life actively involved in helping refugees. They learnt how to use emotional intelligence as a tool during challenging times, how to increase empathy and mutual understanding, and how to be a more compassionate change-maker.

PlacesWe explore the authentic Hijazi architectural wonders of Al Balad, reflecting Jeddah’s heritage and traditional Hijazi life. As we journey through the streets and alleys, we can see the hustle and bustle of Jeddah’s downtown district. The eldery men of the community sitting outside the mayor’s office, their daily hangout, playing cards, ballot and gossiping. The journey deep into the Red Sea showcases the breathtaking marine life, fish, dolphins and coral reefs, living in harmony with one of the many shipwrecks full of forgotten history.

FoodFor thousands of years, Jeddah has been a trade hotspot, with its perfect geographical location, encouraging merchants from the Southeast of Asia, Africa and Europe to flock towards her.Today, Hijazi food is a unique blend that appeals to everyone internationally. Its earliest influences include the Afghani, Indian, Turkish and Ottoman kitchens. Food at Twina, a seafood restaurant, exemplifies the cuisine of the past, present and future. Being a coastal city, hospitality is an inherent quality in the people of Hijaz; doors are always open for visitors, hot food ready whenever needed and qahwa ready to be served.

LanguageThe influence of international visitors, from the neighboring Gulf countries, traversed various aspects of the culture, including language. The Hijazi tongue, a much softer and flexible dialect of Saudi Arabic, appeals to many and can be easily understood. Apart from a Hijazi pronunciation, the words stay true to their standard Arabic counterpart.

BUDGETING WITH RANA JAN

MANAGE YOUR TRANSIT Try to save by alternating between regional airlines or low cost airlines for your connecting flight.

B U S I N E S S

USE DIFFERENT SEARCH ENGINES Do not depend on airline and hotel websites only. Travel search engines could yield better offers.

CONSIDER DIFFERENT DATES Avoid weekends if possible; one day before or after saves you a good sum.

The Author:Rana JanFinance graduate with

experience in banking, treasury, financial planning and corporate banking relationship management. Email: [email protected]

BENEFIT FROM YOUR MILEAGE If you are not registered in any airline mileage program, it’s about time you do. Reaching high points will give you access to first class lounge regardless where your seat on the plane is.

Revise your travel shopping behaviors to make room for more pocket money.

“FLEXIBLE BOOKING”

option will always have

an added cost, but I

recommend you go for it

and pay extra, since there

is always a risk of losing

your money due to sudden

change in plans.

ON THE PLANE For flights of six hours or less, aim for economy or premium. Flying on higher classes is not essential provided you are healthy.

PLAN YOUR SEARCH WELL IN ADVANCE

(Generally 30 – 45 days earlier).

Check for fares on a frequent basis for cost comparisons and promotions. The same applies for hotel bookings.

IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE FIVE STARS Consider dropping the idea of a five star hotel. Filter your search to affordable boutique hotels with high cleanliness standards.

projects focusing on the Gulf region.

She has also taken part in R20, which discussed climate change

and is currently an associate professor

in KAU; the list goes on.

Web: sens.org.sa

Main Concern: Conserving the environment and creating social involvement in her endeavors at SENS to protect the surroundings.

She explains, “SENS were pioneers in the field of environmental voluntary work here in the Kingdom. People wrongly assume that anything related to the environment falls solely within governmental duties and dismiss their own individual responsibility. Our first environmental campaign started with three volunteers, but expanded rapidly to 30,000. We even organized the first woman and child environmental workshop.”

She continues, “I aspire to help raise the coming generations with the correct understanding and appreciation of preserving the environment. This way, when they grow older, they will always have a green approach in whichever path they choose to take.”

Major 2016 SENS Plans: Extracurricular school educational programs to raise eco-awareness.

“What makes this program special is that it is Saudi-catered, but simultaneously

adheres to international standards. The program is an extracurricular activities segment that raises students’ awareness of the importance of the environment; it even incorporates programs for parents and school staff,” she elaborates.

“The programs discuss a variety of issues, such as preserving the aquatic ecosystem, climate change, pollution, health and the environment and so much more. Each topic is assigned to a specific grade from KG, primary and intermediate.”

Environmental Focus Nowadays: Green Technology

Aburas relates, “Green technology is being used around the world. Climate change is significantly connected to industrialization; this is why businesses must shift to green or greener solutions. The abundance of new technology to help the environment has surfaced and we should seriously take them into consideration.”

ART TALK With Hamza Jamjoom

How did you begin?I was very interested in arts ever since the early stages of my life. I took that interest a step forward when I majored in Islamic educational art during my BA. I then completed my MA in ceramics in the UK.

I am currently working as a lecturer in the university and I’ve gained so much from teaching. What’s the concept behind your art?I often draw connections from within the multi-cultural world around me. Our society is a rich source of inspiration; therefore, I am often informed by it. This results in producing artworks that labor as a social commentary. I connect with Arabic calligraphy as a strong representation of my identity.

What are your plans or goals for the future? On the academic level, pursuing a PhD in my field of specialization is something I am seriously considering. As for my studio/art practice, I have been

Highlighting the Beauty of

Hanan Kamal has followed her passion to even the top of buildings. She is a multi-talented person who uses graffiti as her medium for expression. She describes herself as a dreamer with “a different and epic imagination.”

On her beginnings, Kamal says, “I started drawing at 9 years old… I found a way to spread my thoughts on paper until I improved and

then paper wasn’t enough for me anymore. So I started using different materials to express my art, one of which was walls.” She designates graffiti as, “strong, loud and limitless;” to her it requires “infinite creativity.” Unfortunately, graffiti has been deeply linked to males, as the most well-known names in this arena are of men. Kamal responds to that by naming some of the most talented graffiti female artists out there, “Mad C, Steffi Bow, Lady Jay, Faith 47, Maya Hayuk, Swoon, Hera, Miss Van, Myla, Cbloxx, Christina Angelina are all influential female graffiti artists. I even chose my graffiti name, Pink In, to support all females around the world and also to prove that we can do anything. For me, Pink In

doesn’t only stand for the color but also for feminine power.” Kamal also responds to some people’s views of graffiti being an eye soar and a mean of sabotage. She has chosen to be its voice and to cement its stature as a unique form of art, and not simply scribbles on walls. She relates, “Even though, most people still think that graffiti art ruins the environment and should be a crime, others are supporting us and believe it really looks good.” People can see Kamal’s art around Jeddah like at Al Rawdah Park, Flamingo Mall, Red Sea Mall and Obhur.

Hanan Kamal wishes to spread her art everywhere and give women their rightful place in the graffiti arena.

Who is Maan Balila? By profession I’m an architect and by passion, a musician. I play five instruments and write/record music at my home studio usually for fun, and sometimes publish it online.

How did you get into composing and recording music?

It all started 16 years ago. A school friend whose dad owned a music shop lent me an electric guitar and we started learning with one another. I eventually found myself on drums because it's the best stress reliever. I started playing covers of other people's songs and soon afterwards realized I can make my own versions, so I eventually started writing my own music. My friends encouraged me to publish it online, and thus the Soundcloud page started in 2011.

Your compositions are usually rock-oriented. Why have you chosen this specific genre to work with?

I find that I express myself best playing rock music. It's high-energy, loud, full of emotions and doesn't limit itself with too many musical rules. CO

you did a rock version of the saudi national anthem. how did you come up with the idea?

It was a gift for my best friend. We grew up listening to Punk Rock, and I thought he'd enjoy this version and it was a lot of fun to make.

It says you’re a Falafel Sandwich on your Twitter. Why not consider being a shawarma?

I admit, I'm not a fan of shawarma. I don't like meat in general; but falafel? Oh man, falafel is my fuel. First comes falafel, then everything else.

What has been your favorite performance moment to date?

Germany was a truly humbling experience. They were very genuine and helpful with their comments and criticism of my playing technique afterwards. Another moment was a compliment I received from a kind old lady after a performance. She approached me as I walked off stage and said, "Your drum playing is graceful; you play drums as if you were playing the piano." Her comment helped me understand the difference between musicianship and showmanship.

The up and coming movie producer is blazing a trail in the world of film; already adding to her name the Oscar-nominated movie, Theeb as a visual effects production manager.

Ever since childhood, Shaheen wanted to work in film. She later attended the Academy of Art University in the US. She says, “Attending the Academy of Art University, helped clarify exactly which part in production I wanted to be involved in. As

GET THE KIDS IN THE KITCHEN and Have Some Fun!

Page 47: DJ Issue 90

Mix the batter and sprinkle some fun with your little ones. By Anne-Marie Argile

Baking is an integral part of cooking. Spending time with your children in the kitchen is not just great fun but the perfect opportunity for them to learn about cooking. The smell of baking, the excitement of seeing cakes as they come out of the oven and the joy of eating them will help inspire a healthy interest in food.

Allow plenty of time. Let them get involved as much as possible. Choosing recipes and helping with the shopping can be as much fun as the actual cooking and eating. Remember that scraping the bowl and licking the spoon is the chef’s prerogative, not to mention the best bit!

Keep it simple. Choose a recipe that is suitable for the age and attention span of your child. Use quick and easy recipes for young children, saving the more creative and complicated ones for the older children to experiment with.

It’s going to get messy! It’s a fact, smaller hands won’t be as accurate when it comes to weighing, cracking eggs and spooning cake mixture, but so what if your kitchen descends into chaos under a cloud of flour? It’s all part of the fun.

Need inspiration? The internet is full of fun baking ideas but cook books are a great resource with inspiring pictures. Kids will love flicking through the pages and choosing what to make. Look at cookbooks designed especially for them.

Get creative. When it comes to decorating cakes, colorful icing, sprinkles and sweets spark the imagination. Themes are fun to follow too: characters, pirates, butterflies and all things pretty work well. But remember, perfection is not the aim; having fun and making something delicious that your children will want to eat is.

Understanding the power of outdoor serenity and campsite calmness.

Eyes open, there is an unfamiliar moment as I take in what is overhead. Sometimes it’s the roof of my tent, the stars or a shelter I have put together. The sleeping bag is restrictive but then I realize its warmth and I am grateful. Nothing but quiet around camp as I get to my feet and start putting together a fire and getting the coffee that was soaking overnight on it.

The morning quiet around a campsite is my favorite part of any camping trip. I’m an early riser even by camping standards and before the movement of the day I enjoy the moment of solitude that I get out of it.

Paul Tillich said, “Language has created the word ‘loneliness’ to express the pain of being alone. And it

Embrace the Comfort of the Outdoors

has created the word solitude to express the glory of being alone.” That aspect of camping is one I enjoy thoroughly, whether I am camping in a group setting or alone. There are so many different facets to camping; some we think of ahead of time and some that pleasantly surprise us. But the only way we will ever find them out and how we will react to them is by getting out there.

that is so important to our heritage as a species. That’s not to say that we should all be vanishing off into the woods or desert to pursue a simpler life. But there is value in intermittently straying from our sedentary existence.

Before intimidating any reader we have to mention that starting small is natural for all of us. Don’t let experienced outdoorsmen make you feel like you have to go on a solo walkabout with nothing but your underwear. Start with what makes you comfortable but I encourage everyone to strive for progress. In a digital age where we are bombarded with messages and told a million ways of how to do things, we have to blaze our own trail.

Without getting overly romantic about the outdoors, there is simply no shortage of positives to being out in nature. In a group setting you learn teamwork and efficiency as tasks have to be taken care of or the group will potentially go without food or shelter (not always a bad thing).

Alone you will gain an incredible sense of confidence and pride. My bushcraft instructor Tim Smith would always say to me, “convenience is the enemy of self-reliance.” In an increasingly modern world there is an impotence that comes with the trappings of gadgetry and technology. Bringing it back to the basics of a life in the outdoors gives us a sense of empowerment

Trying to get away from the cold and rainy days of Manchester, Nouf Al Osaimi decided to go on holiday to Sharm El Sheikh one day and enjoy the beaches, but fate had other plans. Her friends convinced her to go on a boat excursion, which included a diving spot, changing her life goals forever. With Sharm El Sheikh being the starting point, in 2009 she went back to complete her basic PADI certifications, followed by PADI’s Rescue Diver and Divemaster certifications in Jeddah; eventually becoming a scuba diver instructor in 2013 by completing the instructor development course.

Al Osaimi wanted to provide a platform for women to be motivated and experience the wonders of underwater life of the Red Sea like she did, and that’s how Pink Bubbles came about. Its concept is to serve as a club for the rising demand of females to learn scuba diving and to spread environmental and marine awareness among the community. By getting women involved in diving, she hopes to expose them to an exciting hobby and way of life. Furthermore, Al Osaimi is a contributor to the Obhur Magazine due to her background in tourism management. She randomly came across an advertisement on Facebook asking for contributions, and Al Osaimi took it as the perfect opportunity to collaborate with the magazine and write articles on her underwater experiences. She is also part of the Eco Obhur campaign aimed at spreading marine

environmental awareness. Al Osaimi has always emphasized on it and believes that taking care of the underwater environment is key to protecting its life. “We need more facilities, diving centers not specific to instructors, more beaches open to Saudis, protected marine reserves and overall environmental awareness. We also need marine national parks.”

Diving with sharks in the virgin reefs of Sudan was

definitely an extraordinary experience. It was amazing because everybody thinks

that sharks are deadly creatures but it’s not true. It’s a media biased against sharks because in reality, 15 sharks attack humans per year while we kill 100 million sharks every year

EID CHIC from Day to Night

Professional makeup tips to rock your look this Eid.By Norah Al Eisa

Make sure to use sun protection, preferably an oil-free sunscreen so it won’t allow your makeup to slide off later on during the day.

For a dewy and long-lasting look, apply Stila’s All Day foundation and concealer. To set the concealer, go with yellow-toned setting powder to brighten up the under eye area.

For a dramatic sultry eye look, add a maroon color to your matte bronzy daytime shadow, with a bit of shimmer at the center of the lid (Colorpop Stereo 2). Add a jet black long-lasting gel liner to top it all off (Inglot no.77 gel liner).

LOOK 1

For a long-lasting contour, apply a cream contour and then a powder contour on top to set it all in place. Skip the eyeliner and apply black eye shadow instead for a soft daytime look.

Transform your look for night by adding a fun pop of color to the lips.

Professional makeup

artist Rasha Al Madhayan

last all day and transform

your look from daytime appropriate to nighttime

To start off this matte look, spritz on a bit of Skindinavia’s oil control primer spray. This will control the shine and allow your makeup to last throughout the day. Achieve a

luminous matte finish to the skin by applying Dolce and Gabbanna’s full coverage foundation with a beauty blender.

Change up your look by swapping the pink lipstick for a red one instead (pro tip: go for a red lipstick with blue undertones, as it will make your teeth appear whiter).

Apply winged eyeliner and smudge it out for an instant glam cat eye.

Banana Chocolate Pops With children, the key to having them eat healthier is to get a little more creative. There is no easier way of jazzing up fruit than by adding a little chocolate. Use 70 percent cocoa to keep the sugar content down. Simply, skewer frozen bananas and dip them into whatever melted chocolate you like, and add sprinkles or nuts before the chocolate sets.Tip: Always have peeled bananas in the freezer for smoothies or quick snacks.

Fresh Fruit Popsicles During the warm months, enjoy these popsicles made with coconut water or lemonade and fresh organic fruit. Strawberry Yogurt BarkIt’s kind of fun to trick your children into thinking they’re eating something unhealthy; when in reality they’re getting decent nutrition. Fill a lined baking sheet with a thin layer of your preferred yogurt with cinnamon and honey for taste, and top it with dried strawberries or whatever toppings. Freeze for a few hours, (we recommend eight hours), and break into chunks and serve frozen.

PACK YOUR BAGS NOT YOUR STOMACH!How to maintain a healthy diet while on vacation.

Airports are notorious for fast food restaurants and shops selling unhealthy, processed snack foods. When you’re waiting around the airport for your flight and hunger strikes, these may seem like the only choices unless you plan ahead and put together some quick and healthy alternatives:a. A mix of raw nuts and dried fruit can make an easy trail mix.b. Healthy bars, nuts, or fresh fruits are simple and require zero prep.

1 Pack Healthy Snacks

2 Find a Nearby Supermarket

Find a supermarket as soon as you get to your destination and load up on fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, yogurt and other healthy snack foods that you like. These can serve as grab-and-go snacks if you go out exploring, sightseeing, or just to keep you going in between meals. You can also make some of that delicious trail mix you had at the airport to keep with you.

3 4 Staying physically active on your trips can help offset any extra calories and prevent unwanted weight gain while you go about enjoying delicious foods. Try to look for ways to explore the city that include physical activity. Opt out of taking taxis or public transportation when a bicycle ride or walk is possible. Riding a bike, or more adventurous activities like kayaking are all fun activities to do while exploring a city or the wilderness while giving you the extra benefit of calorie burn.

Take some time to look into the food options that will be available to you on your vacation. Most restaurants will post their menus online so it’s a good idea to look at them beforehand. a. Choose meats and seafood that are grilled, baked, broiled, steamed, or roasted instead of fried.b. Ask for accompaniments to be separated on the side, such as salad dressing, mayonnaise, sour cream and cheese.c. Substitute vegetables or salad for the fried side dishes.

Do Your Research Set Aside Some Time for Physical Activity

It’s okay to splurge here and there; after all you’re on vacation. But, always think of moderation when indulging in your favorite foods. For example, if you’re going to have dessert, try to share it with others. Or if you know you’re going to want pizza for dinner, try to eat lighter throughout the day. Remember, it’s always about moderation and balance.

Below is a list of suggestions you can try to raise your metabolism.

EAT ENOUGHCutting down drastically on food intake can actually have an opposite effect, resulting in weight gain. When you consume less than your basic biological function (estimate of calories you need per day based on BMI), your body starts breaking down muscles for energy. So make sure you are eating the right amount of calories.

Lifestyle tips for burning fat quick and easy.

As we grow, our metabolism starts decreasing. This sounds depressing, but rest assured, there are actually numerous ways to fight this.

According to a Japanese study, caffeine is known to stimulate the nervous system, so that daily cup of coffee can actually help increase your metabolism by 5-8 percent and a cup of tea can raise itby 12 percent.

Iron is vital for carrying the oxygen your muscles need to burn fat; women, specifically, tend to lose iron each month due to menstruation. If you are not replenishing, then you run the risk of low energy and metabolism. Good sources of iron include lean meats, beans, shellfish and spinach.

Your body requires protein to maintain muscle mass. Protein increases post-meal calorie burn by 35 percent. Good sources of protein include legumes, nuts, fish and poultry.

The easiest 350 calories you'll

as taking the stairs or standing to talk on the

Vitamin D is important for maintaining metabolism- revving muscle tissue. Many do not include adequate amounts in their diets. You can easily incorporate it by having salmon, tuna, shrimp, milk, cereal, tofu and eggs. Same goes for calcium deficiency; research shows that consuming calcium through dairy foods such as fat-free milk and low-fat yogurt helps reduce fat absorption from other foods.

Research suggests that pesticides can initiate weight gain; choose organic when purchasing vegetables and fruit, since the non-organic versions tend to have the highest levels of pesticides.

Is Your Boot Camp

Killing You?

The dos and don’ts to avoid tissue injuries.

Generally, exercise-related injuries are not caused by a trainer’s negligence, but in many cases could have been avoidable. With the increase of boot camp-style training’s popularity, there has been an increase in soft tissue overuse injuries.Appropriate injury screening, prevention and management systems are essential, particularly when conducting groups with less one-on-one interaction.

Footwear The biggest single factor you can influence in terms of lower limb injuries is footwear. Every pair of shoes has a certain amount of steps, after which they lose their shock absorption capacity. Once the shoe stops absorbing the shock, the leg does. Having a pair of shoes correctly fitted is essential.

H E A LT H Y L I V I N G

Training Error One of the biggest contributors to soft tissue injuries is a sudden increase in training load, primarily running. Many clients think the pain must be normal as they haven’t exercised for a while or feel “soft” if they complain about it. Tendons, muscles and bones adapt well with a structured and gradual increase in load. If the increase in load is faster than the adaptive ability of the tissues, then they will start to break down resulting in tendonitis, stress fractures, myofascial (muscular) pain and other injuries.

Beware of Leather “walking” shoes. These shoes do not

have the same degree of sole construction, in terms of density and shock absorption ability.

DID YOU KNOW? Removing the shoe by

stepping on the heel and forcing them off the lazy way stretches the shoe’s heel cup,

causing a less snug fit. The rear-foot then moves around more in the shoe; decreasing stability. So, always untie laces

before removing.

Tendonitis/Tendinosis Tendonitis literally means inflammation of a tendon. The most common sites of tendonitis are the Achilles tendon, (back of foot), the patella tendon (knee), the extensor tendon of the elbow (tennis elbow and the supraspinatus tendon (shoulder).

In general, tendons are very poor healers due to the low blood supply. Some studies suggest an average healing time of 12 months for tennis elbow and Achilles tendonitis.

commencing new exercise modalities such as running or higher impact classes. A myofascial trigger point is a “knot” or band within a muscle that tightens up, won’t let go with stretching and becomes a pain-generating source.

Stress Reactions/Fractures The most common stress reaction we see is shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome). The most common causes are tight calves and excessive pronation of the feet (flattening of the arch of foot.) On average, a stress fracture will take three months to fully recover.

Myofascial Pain Myofascial pain refers to pain coming from muscles and/or fascia. It is common for clients to complain of progressively tight muscles or pain when

• Ask for a handout on what to expect from training,

Let’s talk about the spiritual wonder that is Eid prayer.By Eman Bukhari

All over the world, at least 1.6 billion people wake up at dawn on the first of Shawwal to celebrate Eid Al Fitr – the celebration of breaking the fast, a Muslim occasion that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. This practice dates back to the second Hijri year/ 623 AD

and is celebrated differently from one Muslim community to the other, but its essence is uniform throughout the world and it begins with the Eid prayers.

You make your way to the Eid musalla on foot in the morning with your family, greet your neighbors dressed in their finest clothes, take a deep breath and smell the sweetest perfumes, wish strangers a Eid

Mubarak, and sneak in line with the children as eidiyat (loose change) and small treats are handed out.

Up until it’s time for prayer, mosques will perform takbeerat, with everyone in attendance chanting along in unison. The prayer itself is two raka’as, and within the prayer different numbers of takbeerahs are given. The prayer is closed with a sermon.

The reasoning behind the practice in combination with the action is what gives you the overwhelming sense of spirituality. Your heart flutters when you witness your whole community lining up; you get goose-bumps hearing your Muslim brothers thank Allah and praise His greatness in one voice.

The image represents what we have to be thankful for

and why we need to praise our Creator. You see humanity standing side by side in agreement on our blessings and purpose on Earth.

The prayer carries immeasurable religious merit and is described as the reward after a month of fasting and hard work. Everyone is encouraged to attend so that you stand ready to collect Allah’s gift.

Eid prayers are not only conducted in mosques,

but designated neighborhood

musallas as well. Below are some in Jeddah:

TIPS AND TRICKS TO KEEP YOUR COOL

1. Understand That Anger is Not Strength

“The strong man is not the one who can wrestle, but it is the one who can control himself when he is angry.”

(Bukhari)

2. Follow the Sunnah a. Say "Audhu billahi min

should lie down. c. Remain silent and patient.

d. Make wudhu and pray two raka’as.

3. Be Empathetic People may be going through a rough time,

We are all working to get closer to Allah, to earn His love and pleasure, and inevitably His reward of paradise. It is only essential therefore, that we identify the characteristics that Allah loves in order to secure His affection.

Getting closer to Allah step by step.

QualitiesLOVED BY ALLAH Doing Good

Doing good is...well doing good. Whether it’s a kind word or a smile, whatever your definition, the result is always more love in the world.

“And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.” (Al Baqarah 02:195)

Following the Prophet Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was sent as an example and guide; following him is taking the path to salvation.

“Say, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” (Aal-Imran 03:31)

Those Who Have Taqwa (Piety) Being conscious of Allah at all times, knowing that He sees your every action and hears your every word, inspires one to do good.

“Indeed, Allah loves the Muttaqeen [those who fear Him, and are conscious of Him]. (Tawbah 09:04)

Those Who Put Their Trust in Him Alone Only Allah has full control over everything. Entrusting your affairs to Him implies that one acknowledges His

“Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].” (Aal-Imran 03:159)

Justice Today justice is rarity. It is a noble character to possess and praiseworthy to acquire.

Indeed, Allah loves those who judge in equity. (Al-Maa’idah 05:42)Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly. (Al-Hujurat 49:9)

Those Who Are Patient Patience is a virtue. It is. Patience strengthens one to get through the difficulties of life, to overcome obstacles and to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

3 Being RepentantBeing humans, we forget, and thus repentance is required. The Prophet informed us that Allah is happier with our repentance, than a dying man in the desert that comes upon a life-saving oasis. That’s how much Allah loves our turning back to Him.

“Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant.” (Al-Baqarah 02:222)

MAY 18We landed in Genève’s airport and took a train straight to Montreux located on Lake Geneva (Lac Leman). The city is famous for the annual Montreux Jazz Festival. We settled into Fairmont Le Montreux Hotel, a comfortable hotel perfect for international travelers. At the Montreux Jazz Café, dinner was accompanied by a view of the lake at night. We ate a delicious local fish topped with a drizzle of a lemon pepper sauce. The fish was served with a side of green mashed potato and an avocado sorbet salad. After dinner, we explored the sleeping Montreux’s historical streets while getting a sense of the city’s energy.

MAY 20We checked out from Fairmont and headed to Chillon Castle, an ancient floating Castle on the shore of Lake Geneva (Lac Leman).

The architecture on the islet was breathtaking. Walking through the halls we found ourselves admiring every pillar and detail. The castle also included exhibitions of weaponry and renovated murals.

After our dose of history we stopped at Montreux at le Palais Oriental for some Iranian cuisine. We were served a traditional platter mezzeh along with grilled meat over fragrant rice.

On the pier, we took a moment to appreciate Montreux before catching a boat to Lausanne. We revisited some of the city’s monuments and then greeted Lausanne.

We stopped for some coffee at the newly renovated Royal Savoy, and later had dinner at hotel Beau-Rivage’s restaurant, Café Beau-Rivage.

MAY 19After a pleasant breakfast at the hotel, we went to Vevey to visit the home where Charlie Chaplin spent the last 25 years of his life. His house opened to the public on the anniversary of his birthday on April 16 this year.

Today his house consists of the main house, the studio, the garage turned into a gift and souvenir shop, and a restaurant. Walking around the rooms of his house we came across relics of his personal and professional life. The walls were lined with screens showcasing his work along with lifelike wax figurines of some of the significant influencers in his life. We watched one of his short films in the theater and once it finished the screen lifted up to reveal his studio that contains original pieces from his sets.

Later we visited Vevey’s town market, which is the second biggest in Europe. Not too far, the world's biggest fork sticks out of the lake in front of Alimentarium, a food museum. A fulfilling dinner in Safran Montreux concluded our day.

The city’s personality is reflected in its many opportunities for shopping, especially in the posh street Rue de Bourg. After buying enough cattle figurines and chocolate we headed on to the culinary highlight of the trip.

Lunch was at the acclaimed restaurant Eat Me which offered a taste of various cultures. Each page in the menu represented a continent and each small-portioned dish was flavorful. The cozy ambience and delicious bites combined into a great dining experience.

Olympic torches from every Olympic event in history. The museum also commemorates the Greek history and culture behind the games. We ended the tour with a walk outside where statues of athletes stood tall. Later we ate brunch at TOM Café, which is situated at the top floor in the museum.

Treat the sea and sand lover in you.

As dusk strikes, the sun shines dimly, its weak rays reflect in the vast sea. The beach boasts of a sunset experience like no other near Jeddah, where neither boat nor watercraft obstructs the horizon. It’s just the sand and sea in front of us and grass and palm trees behind us with the winds slowly breezing past them, creating the most beautiful sounds.

The kaleidoscopic kite flies high as children learn to swim in the shallow waters while some of them practice maneuvering on their self-balancing scooters. Families try to barbeque, with some of their members taking selfies with the setting sun and a few parents

close by run after their toddlers who seem to enjoy walking in the soft grass. This is a sight we saw while at Al Saif Beach.

We heard about this new beach that opened fairly recently in 2015 a while ago. But now after hearing its reviews we couldn’t wait any longer and decided to visit. Someone told us that we could swim so we got our swimming gear along with us.

Despite opening without much fanfare, we found Al Saif Beach crowded. In Jeddah when a new attraction opens, somehow the entire city knows about it within days.

Google Maps has it listed as “Sword Beach,” a literal translation of Al Saif. If one starts asking or searching for Sword Beach they won’t find it anywhere except on Google Maps. All signboards leading

Page 101: DJ Issue 90

up to the place have it written as Al Saif Beach and Jeddawis know the beach as that as well.Speaking of signboards we came across plenty of them on the way, especially after reaching King Faisal Road. The road is filled with warehouses and factories and we passed hoards of them on our way. An interesting thing I saw here was the solar powered streetlights, something I haven’t seen in any place in the country before. Though they were not the best looking they were definitely the most eco-friendly ones out there.

We followed the signboards and reached South Corniche; a place anglers prefer over Al Saif Beach. From South Corniche we continued to head south following Corniche Road and went round a thermal power plant.

DESTINATION JEDDAH JULY 201698

After the power plant it was another 5-minute drive, and there was Al Saif Beach, neatly laid out with palm trees flanking the main road. The total distance of the beach from downtown Jeddah is around 55 kilometers and it took us less than an hour to reach.

Parking was a hassle, but we eventually found a spot. The

swimming gear wasn’t of much use as the water was only knee-high and the waves were negligible; no wonder it was mostly filled with children. An excellent spot for the young ones to learn swimming, as the sand beneath is

extremely soft and no stones or algae whatsoever are found at the beach. Plus the beach is surprisingly clean considering the numbers it sees, especially if we consider what happened to Jeddah’s Corniche only days after reopening, where one would find plastics and all sorts of garbage seaside.

What we enjoyed most at the beach was walking in the shallow waters, the soft sand dispersed with every step we took making the seawater look murky. The experience of duskhere deserves a mention on its own; pristine – to put it in one word. A place where you can get a book or drink a fine cup of tea while watching the sun set into the vast seas ahead of you.

Since there isn’t any habitation or makeshift kiosks nearby it’s best to get all your supplies from Jeddah. There are even huts available for families who want that extra bit of privacy; we didn’t find many using them though. A makeshift mosque is available at sight

along with many restrooms that one comes across while walking by the beach. On the whole it is an ideal picnic spot for families, be it barbeques or weekend gatherings.

BAYT JEDDAH Jeddah Our Days of Bliss ResidenceDetails, authenticity and art.By Aabiya Baqai and Nafeesa McDowell

HISTORYBuilt 136 years ago, the Salloum Residence, also known as Bayt Jeddah, was established in 1880 by Sheikh Abdullah Bin Obaid Salloum. Even its furniture dates back to 120 years, imported mostly from India because of its durability. After the death of Sheikh Abdullah, his son Sheikh Ahmed took ownership of the residence followed by his daughter Asma’a, who owns it till today. The residence was renovated in response to the “Jeddah Our Days of Establishment.”

FEATURES Bayt Jeddah is house to many vintage pieces that have been carefully looked after for generations. In the ground floor’s living room, you will come across an antique wall clock that needs to be turned manually, and a unique vintage

brass rotary telephone. As you head inwards towards the back of the house, you will feel a breeze of fresh air, provided by natural ventilation; a larger than life chimney that all rooms lead to.

As you head up to the first floor, you enter a majlis; a carom board, a vintage gramophone playing Abdul Basitt’s recitation and a manual fan that surprisingly works better than its contemporary versions. In the master bedroom, you see a bridal trunk for a Hijazi newlywed’s clothes, her jewelry trunk and a sewing machine. The study in Bayt Jeddah, introduced during the university bloom, showcases a desk with all the necessary stationery.

HISTORIC KSA Ruins that evoke an ineffable charm.By Mohammed Mirza

The First Seaport Of Arabia

The port is built on the ancient village of Uqair, the village that has seen ships sail from its waters and reach Persia, India and parts of China. Some historians believe it to be the oldest seaport in the country.

Sitting 40 kilometers from the city of Hofuf, for centuries Uqair Port was a major trading center for the Al Ahsa region. However, the structure that we see today dates back to the recent late 19th and the early 20th century, built by the Ottomans.

The customs building is the most significant historic structure still standing at Uqair. Once goods were cleared, they would be sold or transported via camels to other parts of Arabia.

Uqair Port played its most prominent role after the establishment of the Saudi state. It is also where King

Abdulaziz signed the famous Uqair Protocol in 1922 with the British.

The port continued to flourish, till about 1945 after which it dropped off the map, a result of the new seaport constructed in Dammam to meet the growing demand for Saudi oil. The seaport at Dammam

was a more feasible option for oil exporters as it was located closer to the oil base.

The seaport is currently closed, with plans to develop it and revive the town of Uqair; making it a tourism hub under the ambitious Uqair Development Project.
