This issue is the 50th issue of Destination Jeddah – a milestone which seemed to be a mirage five years ago! What an enjoyable experience this has been. Jeddah has witnessed growth in not only population, but also inspiring businesses, parks, restaurants, art galleries, musical talents…the list is endless. Along with this growth has come a realization of the rights and responsibilities which residents have towards their beloved city. Whether it was tackling Jeddah’s issues, cleaning up the Corniche, or winning an entry in the Guiness Book of Records, Jeddahwis have exhibited great courage and spirit.

I’m also proud to announce that March 2013 will also herald the launch of Destination Riyadh. This new monthly magazine will endeavor to supply the residents of Riyadh with all the news and reviews of the original Destination Jeddah, but targeted for the Riyadh customer, of course. Please spread the word to your friends and family to welcome our latest initiative.

Unfortunately, poverty is a huge part of our society, and the less fortunate are seen everywhere you turn. Although there are people out there who are trying to help as much as they can whether it is through charity organizations, giving away things to those who need it the most, and trying to spread the word that we are all brothers and sisters who should help each other; the question is, is that enough? One of the main issues that need to be addressed is the wasted food that most people throw away on a daily basis. Let us consider restaurants for example - what do they really do with all the leftover food? Are they packing it up and sending it to those in need or do they throw all that food away? We are raising this question to the food industry because as Mahatma Gandhi said, “Poverty

Food Waste in Jeddahis the worst form of violence.” Food waste is not only a crime towards poor people, but it is also a crime against our mother earth. A study showed that when food rots and decomposes, it releases methane, a greenhouse gas, which is more damaging to the environment than carbon dioxide (CO2). Therefore food disposal is hurting everyone and everything that surrounds us. If each one of us collected the food leftovers we have from home or after dining out and gave it to those in need, maybe hunger and starvation could be eliminated in Jeddah.

There were a few charity organizations that tried to address this matter; however they unfortunately did not last, which is why we as a society should try to do something about it!

The Non-Existent Littering PolicyThumbs Down to...

Thumbs Up to...Bougainvillea: “The Green Building”

Protecting our environment and preserving the beauty of nature should be one of our top priorities in terms of food, beverages, parks, streets, and even buildings. Bougainvillea Jeddah, otherwise known as The Green Building due to their vision and concept, is located on King’s Road. It has been designed in the form of a forest garden with the aim of creating a bond between shopping, work, dining, leisure, hi-tech offices, and nature. At Bougainvillea, citizens and tourists are provided with a place to relax and enjoy spacious greenery, natural wood and light, and dine and shop at the same time.

On December 27th, around 500 people gathered in the newly re-opened Corniche, holding signs and calling for action towards a clean and environmentally friendly Corniche. The group, consisting of well known TV personalities, journalists, business men and women and many more, urged people to take action and get involved towards a better, preservative future of the walkway, rather than depending on others. They even held a competition where the one who gathers the most waste wins a prize. All that outraged effort could have been avoided by clear and strict littering laws that should have been set from the very beginning, not just for the Corniche, but the city as a whole.

13 TIPS

1. As soon as you arrive at our desert land, get your Iqama affairs in order.

2. Beginning to feel our sun’s heat? Sunscreen would be a good idea.

3. Make your sponsor your best friend, that is, if you want to travel again.

4. Grab the first Abaya you can find for now, you don’t want to be the obvious outsider amongst the sea of black.

5. You might think there’s a hunger strike going on, it’s just Ramadan.

6. Be warned of shopaholics on the loose, Eid is around the corner.

7. Invest in a good home movie entertainment system; this will be your cinema.

8. We don’t have paparazzi, but you will find flashes of Saher in every corner.

9. That awkward moment when you and your wife step into the ‘Singles’ section, the ‘Families’ section might be what you’re looking for.

10. With a new restaurant opening every other week, a diet is your survival mode. You will find most of your diet necessities at your nearest Danube supermarket. 11. When the heat finally gets to you, why not go for a trip underwater, no Abayas necessary we promise.

12. Get to know your local butcher; he will hook you up with the best meat you could buy.

13. Think of driving in Jeddah like a PlayStation game, to score you have to avoid all the holes, good luck!

DIARY OF A DOMESTIC BEGINNER

By Jawahir Al Faiz

I have a new favorite word. It is not a particularly smart word, but extremely powerful nonetheless. It gave me freedom, time, and a whole lot of piece of mind! That word is "downsize."

Oh how I love this word! It’s really so much more than just a word; it’s a complete lifestyle. If you’ve read my previous columns, you’ll know that I’m a wife and mother happily (after months of traumatic tears and domestic disasters) living my life without a maid. Despite the initial nightmare in ultimate DIY projects, I have made it my mission to show other wives and mums how life is ironically better without one. Doing things myself has taught me two things; vacuuming is incredibly empowering, and one man and his two kids generate a frightening amount of laundry. The mundane task of washing and folding clothes made it painfully clear to me that I (like all champion shopping females) buy my kids way too many things. Organizing their wardrobes for the first time myself made me so mad and overwhelmed. They had so many clothes that some hadn’t even made it to circulation and were already getting too small! I’ve never bought my kids designer clothes, and never will – even after I buy my own island one day (what? Haven’t you read The Secret? Think it and it’ll happen!) The idea of paying huge amounts of money on clothes that will make my kids my own walking billboard showing I have money (or a valid credit card), bewilders me. But the amount of clothes they had was ridiculous in its own right. I went on a frantic downsizing frenzy and gathered boxes upon boxes of clothes to donate to charity. Now I won’t buy anything before removing an old item it’s going to replace. Going green isn’t just about recycling and reusing. It’s also about not creating unnecessary clutter in the first place. When I do eventually buy my island, I know our suitcases will be light and manageable.

Whenever a person first thinks of Riyadh the immediate thought that comes to mind is that of a typical concrete metropolis surrounded by blankets of sandy dunes. That, however, would not be the most accurate description as just adjacent to the city you will come across one of the most exquisite scenic bliss known in the region - the Wadi Hanifa - about 120 kilometers of naturally beautiful lakes and luscious green trees.

WADI HANIFA“GREENERY, PONDS, VALLEYS AND MUCH MORE!”

Having visited some of the huge malls, forts and museums during our stay in Riyadh, we were looking for somethingnew and with a few good words fromfriends who had visited the area before, Wadi Hanifa seemed like the perfect placeto visit for our excursion.

The valley is mainly divided in to two portions one in the north of Riyadh and the other in the south of Riyadh. The northern

portion is accessible via the western ring road and then on to the Wadi Hanifa road and this runs through most of the northern portion of the valley and gives a nice glimpse of the valley. There are many villages situated on this road and it can give a great insight into the diminishing village life.

After having a wonderful drive on the northern part it was time for us to head out towards to the southern part of the valley

which is where most of the ponds are located and it is the more greener portion of the valley. The southern part is accessible via the southern ring road and then on to the Wadi Hanifa road. Please note thought that this road somehow also has the same name as the road to access the northern portion of the valley although there is no link between them.

In the southern portion of the valley we came across one of the biggest dams I have ever seen. Even though we were there at a time when the floodgates were closed, it was still a sight worth seeing. There are many spots in and around the valley that you can easily find which provide an amazing view of the landscape, these spots are ideal for getting your grill out and having a good old fashioned barbecue - we know we did!Soon after we continued on our journey going south and we came across plenty of parks with loads of recreational activities available in them. These parks are almost always filled with families having barbeques and children playing around.

Other things to look for in the area are the date palm plantations being cultivated on the banks of the Wadi, as well as the nice hilly areas which provide an opportunity to gaze at the mesmerizing sunset, it was probably the best sunset I have seen away from the beach.

DESTINATION JEDDAH 41

Page 44: DJ Issue 50

The valley takes its name from the ancient Arab tribe of Banu Hanifa, who were the principal tribe in the area at the dawn of Islam though in those days the valley was better known as Al Irdh.

Personally speaking, I enjoyed the southern part of the valley more as it has more to offer so I would suggest that you visit the northern part first and then come down to the southern part - as the saying goes “save the best for the last.”

On the whole it was a nice change for us after being in Riyadh for quite some days. It was surprising for us that such a place existed and as we did not know what to expect from it, that made it even more memorable for us. It’s a nice way to relax, breathe some fresh air and it’s the sort of place that people from all age groups can enjoy.

Souq Al Hamam is one of Jeddah’s oldest markets located near Bab Makkah. It has been in existence for more than 60 years, and has always been known for having more than 50 stalls that sold different types of birds, however with the changing times, the variety of animals has changed to reflect the customers’ tastes. Bird lovers can still find birds like Brazilian Macaw parrots and pigeons, while other species such as snakes, hamsters, monkeys, and different types of dogs are also sold at the market.

This famous market has great potential; however, it is unfortunately not given the required amount of care and attention. It suffers from a lack of services such as shaded areas to protect salesmen from the heat, lack of restrooms and hygienic facilities.

Souq Al Hamam is not your typical animal store with window displays and a tour guide. It is in fact a street market where you can walk between animals being displayed on the spot. When you plan your trip there, be prepared for a true animal experience including the sights, sounds, and smells of nature on display.

SOUQ ALHAMAMEvery Friday, in the far South of Jeddah, the air is filled with the melodious voice of bulbul’s, the cooing of pigeons, crowing roosters and poultry, at the biggest market for birds and reptiles in the Western region of the Kingdom. This market, Souq Al Hamam, displays beautiful and rare birds, poultry, and reptiles brought in from various regions within the Kingdom where are sold during the weekly auction. At Souq Al Hamam, you will find unique types of birds and species such as Persian chicken, and Major Mitchell Cockatoo, among many others. The animals are bred and taken care of at farms, then offered for sale at the weekly market.

Digital Art is a general term for the use of digital technology in producing artwork. Latifah Rashed is a Saudi digital artist in her twenties from Hail. Passionate about her work, she shares with us her journey and what inspires her to create such wonderful and beautifully detailed cartoon characters that brings smiles to everyone’s face.

Q1: Tell us a bit about yourself.I am very interested in visual arts, illustrations and design. I also enjoy creating cartoon characters and short animated films.

Q2: How did you start illustrating?Back when I used to paint, it felt somewhat like an operation to me. As soon as my brush touches the blank canvas, there is no going back. I have to live with my original idea and get it on the canvas from start to finish. Even though painting was a good way of using all my different colors and white space, it was

very costly and time consuming. However, when I entered the world of digital art, I quickly adapted to the change in speed and realized the differences, especially cost-wise. The production cost of my artwork kept decreasing. In addition, illustrating introduced me to thousands of new colors that I have never used, which therefore helped me work on more than one project per day.

Q3: Did you take any illustration classes?I haven’t taken any illustration classes from professionals because I personally think self-teaching takes you further than merely acquiring information directly from professionals. Also, self-teaching developed my self-confidence and skills. Some of the things I have learned on my own are that meditation and nutrition for all visual arts help to widen your imagination and allows you to generate beautiful and innovative ideas.

Q4: What tools do you use to illustrate?Direct drawing using Wacom tablet on specialized programs for digital drawing, as well as drawing on my iPad.

Q5: What inspires you to create your characters? My observation of God’s creatures is the source of my inspiration, the merging of all the small details, the lines and colors that God created inspires me to create beautiful things. Another source of inspiration for me are smiles, because of how comfortable, peaceful and content they make me feel. For that reason, I always aim to keep smiles on my characters’ faces when I draw them, because that will reflect on my audience and therefore reflect back on me.

Q6: What difficulties did you face while creating your illustrations using digital art? As a digital artist, the challenge I face is competition. The world we live in today is rapidly changing and evolving, and the audience is becoming more and more impatient. For that reason, in order to stay in the scene, I need to constantly produce more work.

Q7: Did you participate in any galleries or competitions? A group of artists and I participated in painting the largest Islamic canvas of Allah’s 99 names in both Arabic and English. The painting was thankfully a success, and it entered the Guinness Book of World Records.

Q8: What advice do you have for illustrating beginners?Find the appropriate method that you find suitable for yourself, because art is a way of expressing your feelings and emotions. Also focus on practicing, it plays a big role in perfecting your lines and shading.

Q9: We’ve seen your animated short films; do you plan to create an animated series?Director Tahani Rahed and I produced these short animated films, which aim to have their own unique ideas, different from any content that is currently being produced and for it to be of an entertaining nature to convey the ideas in an indirect way. I prefer not to limit

these ideas to a single series or character because I believe that this might cause a limitation in creativity to a certain point. However there will be more of these short animated films that convey innovative ideas.

Q10: What programs did you use to create your animated films?Adobe programs and Final Cut pro.

Q11: What are your future plans for your artwork?A collection of my latest work will be available in the near future. This collection, which includes the already completed “Lateefah Characters,” will be animated. In addition, I am hoping there will be a re-translation of my cartoon characters that could be useful for primary education in order to help children learn all the basic subjects via the iPad.

Raf and DiorI think almost everyone was waiting for this seasons Dior collection; I personally wanted to see the change! And I’ll tell you I liked it. The Fashion industry was shocked when Dior fired Galliano and people were raving to see who would replace him. Then in April 2012 Raf Simons (Belgian, age 45) was announced as the creative director at Christian Dior. Raf was Creative director for Jil Sander and his last collection was Fall/Witner 2012. Simons focused on the 1950s by playing with some of Christian Dior’s famous silhouettes: the A line, the H line, and the Bar jacket.

Simons said he aims “to bring some emotion back to what I felt in the nineties, because I see a lot of amazing clothes, but I don’t see a lot of emotion now.” And we think he succeeded! He walked the walk and owned the runway.

Most people plug in and make use of more appliances and electronics than their outlets are prepared for, resulting in a heap of unplugged wires beneath the outlet since plugs are constantly plugged in and plugged out of the sockets.

The charger is designed in form of a flowerpot with 2500mAh rechargeable lithium battery that gives output of 5V/max. The most vital part of this plant-like charger is the face of the flower that has a large circular solar panel on the top to absorb solar energy. Chef Maurizio’s love for the kitchen was sparked since he was a little boy at the age of ten. On his family trips to Italy, he enjoyed cooking and making fresh homemade pasta with his grandmother. At the age of 16 he took part in a program in Bern, his hometown, where students went to school and trained at a hotel simultaneously, in order to apply what they are learning.

Panicali began working at a French restaurant, where he learned the art of French cuisine. Shortly after, he moved on to serve the Swiss army, where he was coincidentally assigned to kitchen duty. Panicali embarked on his career abroad when he took his first major step outside

EXECUTIVE CHEF MAURIZIO PANICALI

of Switzerland and moved to work as a chef in the Greek island Corfu. Malta, New Zealand, Thailand, Turkey, Argentina and Egypt are other destinations Chef Maurizio visited and worked at, which added the word “international” to his title as a Chef.Chef Maurizio is an optimistic, cheerful, and friendly man who loves not only cooking, but also travelling, discovering, and learning about different cultures and culinary lifestyles. His favorite place to go in Jeddah is Al Balad, where he once coincidentally found Himalaya salt at a traditional pharmacy; his discovery of the salt pleased him very much due to his love for top quality ingredients he is unable to find everywhere.

“The search for ingredients never stops.” - Chef Maurizio Panicali

Chef Maurizio Panicali has a check on all the factors that make up a head chef and chef de cuisine, which is why he has been appointed new executive chef at Rosewood Corniche, one of Jeddah’s top hotels.

Top quality ingredients, according to Chef Maurizio, are a priority. He personally goes into souq’s and supermarkets to purchase his ingredients. For example, he goes on a visit to Bangala weekly to pick out the highest quality fish and shrimp based on his knowledge and expertise. For the past year he has been the Executive Chef at Rosewood in Jeddah; throughout this year already he has impressed visitors and staff with his light-heartedness and passion for cooking. In order to maintain a friendly atmosphere and lift spirits at all times, Chef Maurizio created a Facebook page for Rosewood Corniche chef’s, in which they can stay in touch and discuss a variety of topics including food and cooking ingredients.

Chef Maurizio truly believes that a happy chef cooks the best food. For that reason,

he considers part of his job description is to ensure his staff is always motivated and inspired. He does so by creating programs such as the Magic Box program he launched upon his arrival to Rosewood Corniche. Magic Box is a competition that changed the atmosphere in the kitchen environment, and created an upbeat cheerful attitude between kitchen staff members. It is a competition in which every month, four chefs are given a box of ingredients, 45 minutes to prepare a starter and main course using only the contents of the given box, and finally present the meal to a panel of judges and any present hotel visitors. The winner is provided with the opportunity to showcase his culinary skills at the Riyadh Globe Summit.

Chef Maurizio impresses visitors by creating promotions such as weekly Ladies Night at Ginza i Chome in which ladies can enjoy evenings of fine dining and hot style tips, Mexican Night at Habsburg which consists of nothing but the finest Mexican dishes in Jeddah, Seafood Night at Habsburg which consists of fresh seafood buffet including the Chef’s favorite Lobster Thermidor and Clams Pasta, a Fusion of Business and Pleasure at Noodles, among many other promotions. He is always looking for improvements, developments, and more ways to interact with his visitors.

Toki is one of Leylaty’s group of restaurants, and is considered one of the top destinations for fine Chinese cuisine. With its first class service and authentic dishes, dining at Toki will be memorable.

Within the heart of Qasr Al Sharq, Jeddah’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel, lies Aromi. The words fabulous and authentic Italian are the top ways to describe Aromi. They adopted the Venetian concept in their interior, which adds to the superiority and beauty of the restaurant.

A night out at Romero will allow you to experience a place with lavish ambience, and delicious Mediterranean food. The restaurant consists of an open hall and private areas,

which therefore offers privacy for personal mother-daughter or son conversations. For an elegant taste of France, visit La Cuisine. There, you will enjoy a peaceful night out with your mom in which you can enjoy your conversation while feasting on one of the best cuisines in town.

Ginza I Chome is the ultimate stop for sushi lovers! Definitely recommended. Located at the luxurious Rosewood hotel, your mother will feel truly special if you treat her there. Book a window side table, dine on the finest of Japanese cuisine, and enjoy the breathtaking view of the Red Sea.

Chopsticks is one of Jeddah’s popular Chinese restaurants that has been around since 2010. From their Shrimp Fried rice to their prawn dim sum to their enjoyable and fun atmosphere, you are in for a treat.

We all enjoy the occasional traditional night out; at least we know Jeddawi’s do. Nakheel consists of a traditional ambience and environment, combined with the Middle Eastern foods and dishes we have always known and loved, making it the perfect destination for a simple yet original destination. HIGH TEA AND COFFEE:For a more calm and classical café Shurafa is a great place to escape the crowded regular cafes of Jeddah. Its classical European décor and its calm atmosphere works perfectly for a nice coffee with some sweet dessert or a tasty meal with a more soothing mood.

As we walked through the aquarium, we began with a mangrove swamp and the types of fish found by the shore. We moved along from tank to tank, going deeper and deeper into the ocean. During the tour, we were fascinated by the underwater world and all the wonders it consists of. We saw and learned about creatures such as the sea goldie, clownfish, and the angelfish among many others. The tour guides were extremely informative; they were satisfying our thirst for knowledge by throwing out pieces of educational and interesting facts about each fish along the way. For example, the Boxer Crab, which indeed has what look like boxing gloves on, is known for boxing predators when they feel threatened.

While we proceeded with our tour of the deep sea, we found ourselves walking through an acrylic tunnel in which we were surrounded by Blacktip reef sharks, Ribbontail stingrays, and Arabian angel fish, among other creatures swimming above and around us. Crossing the tunnel led us to a wide large tank that represented the open water, in which we saw Sand Tiger sharks, and fish of all sizes, shapes, and colors. One of the many incredibly interesting underwater creatures we learned about is the Cleaner Shrimp, which just like its name suggests, puts together cleaning stations with other Cleaner Shrimps, and they clean other parasites.

The Dolphin show is a major attraction at the aquarium - it definitely deserves a visit! The theater is spacious and colorful, not to mention nice and bright if you go to the afternoon show. You will be greeted by six dolphins, and five trainers; allow us to introduce you to the beautiful dolphins: Maria, Sara, Faris, Fis Fis, Sukkar, and Gammar. As you can see, the names were chosen in order to adapt to our local culture, and to add some humor and make our experience personal.

The qualified trainers (Alejandro, Daniel, Jovan, Marco, and Andres) came specifically from Mexico and Spain to train Maria and the gang. With more than 15 years of experience with dolphins, the trainers were able to do wonders with Maria and her friends in just three months. Very impressive! Throughout the show, we enjoyed watching the tricks they had to offer. For example, trainer Alejandro danced with dolphin Sara to the song Hero, by Enrique Iglesias. It was a touching scene.

Also during the show and in between acts, commentator Rawi Jalal was entertaining the audience with educational information about dolphins and the marine life in both Arabic and English.

When you walk out of the aquarium you can pick up a souvenir at the Gift Shop, or a bite to eat at the Snack Shop. Coming soon to Fakieh Aquarium is Ocean Drive, a restaurant aimed at providing nothing but the best. Our visit to Fakieh Aquarium was truly a memorable experience; a place we want our readers to experience and enjoy as much as we did.

1. Study your destination well; there are so many green Hotels around the world to choose from. Green hotels provide an eco friendly environment during your stay. Using energy saving light bulbs, recyclable toiletries, renewable energy, low flow toilets and shower – heads and all kinds of green solutions.

2. Rethink your transportation plan. Planes and cars are the worst contributors to pollution. They drink up fuel and cough up deadly Carbon Dioxide, so why not consider taking a train, a bus, a ship or even switch to a Hybrid car.

3. If you have no choice but to go by plane, pack light! The more weight you pack, the more fuel the plane will need for flight, therefore the more pollution it will cause to our planet’s air.

4. If you’re flying, book a day flight, due to complex scientific reasons, night flights actually produce a greater global warming effect than day flights.

5. Bring along a canvas tote bag; take it with you when you shop, in order to minimize the usage of plastic bags.

6. Pack an eco friendly water bottle and coffee mug, so you wont need to use Styrofoam cups and bottled water on the road.

7. Unplug all your electronics and appliances when you leave home, this saves the planet a ton of wasted energy; as even when you are not using these appliances, they still use energy.

8. Take public transportation; as much as you can during your trip, car-pooling is also a preferred option if you’re traveling with a group.

9. Resist using those little plastic bottles of shampoos and conditioners in your hotel, and instead pack your own small bottles of toiletries.

10. Turn off every light in your hotel room, if you’re going to be out all day, turn off the air conditioner as well.

11. Save our trees and go paperless, by downloading your ticket, boarding pass, maps and travel guides to your handheld device.

12. Don’t throw your leftovers, find out where is the nearest place you can donate food and make that your habit during your entire trip.

HOW TO TRAVEL GREEN

Note: Remember, it takes millions of years to produce Fossil Fuels like Petrol, Gas and Coal naturally. We use billions of gallons of oil every year however; it takes millions of years to replace it.

You may already live environmentally friendly at home, but there are also ways to keep your green lifestyle in check while you’re away. Here are some tips you might want to keep in mind when planning your next trip.

OF LIFE!

The Islamic religion is one of thereligions that encourages all the senses; all are linked to each other and in a way complete one another. Islam urges Muslims to stay fit and healthy.

Most of Islam’s rituals are based on two elements “Spiritual and Physical”, like: Prayer and Hajj, both have a great spiritual value that enhances a connection with God and a physical value that helps keep the body fit, another example is when the Prophet used to walk to the mosque 5 times a day, which is a daily work out. That’s why Prophet Mohammed urged Muslims to be active, to teach their children how to be active and to combine their worship to God with simple activities that will benefit their health.

Here are some of the activities: Running: It was stated by Ahmad Ibn Hanbal that the Prophet raced Aisha his wife and she outran him. Then he outran her, so he said, “This time makes up for the other.”

Horsemanship and horse racing: It was reported that the Prophet participated in horse races from Al-Hafya to Thaniyyat Al-Wada, and for those who are training, from Thaniyyat Al-Wada to the mosque of Banu Zurayq (about 1 mile).

Swimming: It is told that the Prophet said, “Let everyone among us swim towards his friend.” The Prophet swam towards Abu Bakir until he embraced him saying, “Here I am and my friend”, which proves that the Prophet can swim very well.

“Teach your children swimming, archery and horse-riding.”-The Holy Prophet Mohammed

Omar Ibn Al-Khattab also known as Al-Farooq “The Great” was born in Makkah. He was one of the powerful and most dominant Muslims that had ruled in Islam. He was best known for his justice, which earned him the title “Al-Farooq”. Omar came from a middle-class family and he became a merchant.

Omar was 27 years old when he converted to Islam. At first he was against the Islamic religion and was in great shock to know that his sister and his brother in law had converted to Islam, however after his sister gave him a chapter of the Quran “Surat Ta Ha” to read, he was amazed by the verses and he converted to Islam. He then went to the Prophet Mohammed and announced his conversion to the Prophet and his companions. Omar was one of the people who truly loved the Prophet Mohammed to a limit where he couldn’t accept his death, however after the speech that Abu Bakir gave, which is “Whoever worshipped Muhammad, let them know that Muhammad has died, and whoever worshipped God, let them know that Allah is alive and never dies.” Omar broke down and accepted the death of The Prophet.

After Abu Bakir passed away, Omar accepted the position of being the Muslim’s new Caliph. Omar concentrated more on combining his power and political influence in the conquered land, rather than pursuing conquests. Omar Ibn Al-Khattab was stabbed to death in Madinah and was carried to his house. People were devastated by his death because he was one of the fairest rulers of Islam and he died defending the Islamic religion.

There are various ways where the radiology department can contribute to a green and eco-friendly use of energy:

1. Turn off power, lights and air conditioning, as well as all radiology equipment, devices and computers when they are not being used.

2. Utilize energy-efficient bulbs.

3. Eliminate darkroom processing and chemicals by going digital and electronic.

4. Reduce film usage through electronic information system such as the PACS.

5. If films are still used, practice silver recovery from discarded films.

6. Fax or e-mail radiology reports instead of using vehicular service.

7. Recycle office materials such as ink cartridges, batteries, papers, boxes, plastics and other recyclable things.

8. Use washable patient gowns. Go Green in Radiology and be recognized as a responsible contributor to environmental harmony.

GREENING RADIOLOGY: For an Eco-Friendly Health Care

Health care facilities, being known as places for cure, happen to be one of the worst carbon emitters. Medical staff, patients and other personnel who keep on coming and going to these places tend to contribute to this environmental imbalance through careless acts of inefficient use of energy. Saving life at the cost of the environment creates big issues in terms of propagating ecological awareness. These energy wastes from electronic and medical equipment, ventilation and lighting might be negligible…. but their cumulative impact leads to a gigantic volume of damage to the environment.

GREENING RADIOLOGY: WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT?

Eco-friendly health care is a big concern of every hospital's radiology department. Each person can contribute in the efficient use of energy, given the fact that this department utilizes a variety of equipment and devices that should be used appropriately. Technological advancement and a gratifying patient experience are NOT excuses for this environmental menace.

• Kiwis can cleanse and exfoliate – mash up a kiwi and use the pulp as a cleanser! The seeds also give the mix its exfoliating properties.

• Strengthen hair with a mayonnaise mask (its cholestorl pumps the cuticle!) Simply comb ½ cup of mayo through wet hair, wait 15 minutes and rinse with cool water, then shampoo as usual.

• Tea Tree Oil has been used for centuries and is a great natural remedy to help deal with acne.

• Puffy Eyes? Wake up tired eyes with a cool eye cream (just store yours in the fridge).

• Prevent hair color from fading by avoiding shampoos that contain sulfates. Sulfates are a form of detergent that can fade color or make it brassy.

• Banish dandruff by rubbing an egg yolk mixed with olive oil into your scalp.

You don’t need a lot of time, money or harsh chemicals to get radiant skin and healthy hair. Look for simple and natural alternatives to start looking your best.

• Make your own makeup remover by mixing olive oil with aloe vera water. The mixture is strong enough to take off even water-proof makeup!

• Get rid of blackheads by rubbing a honey covered half of a lemon on your face.

• Whiten teeth by mixing one tablespoon baking soda with three drops of hydrogen peroxide.

• Create a natural exfoliating lip scrub by 1 part brown sugar, 1 part honey and 1 part olive oil. Removing the dead skin off your lips will help your lip color to come on a lot smoother.

Eco Friendly Beauty Tips Making a few changes to your beauty regimen can make all the

difference in the world for our planet.

HairDid you know using blow driers creates carbon dioxide in the air? It would take 10 YEARS to absorb the carbon dioxide you generate from blow-drying 10 minutes a day for just one year! Reduce your drying time by first towel drying your hair to soak up excess water, and then let the hair air dry till it’s almost dry. Not only will your blow drying time be shorter, the environment will thank you!

SkincareWe don’t realize how many chemicals we apply to our skin daily. Read labels and make sure your soap is free of alpha-hydroxy acids. Alpha-hydroxy acids are harsh chemicals used to clear pores but also damage your skin’s UV protection. Look for all natural cleansers or try making your own cleansers at home using natural kitchen products. There are a ton of great recipes available online.

MakeupBe aware that your lipsticks, foundations and concealers contain more on the bottom then you think. Be sure to scoop out a flat lipstick which you think may be finished. Apply using a lip brush as there is literally another half of a lipstick there! Also use a spatula to access contents at the bottom of your cosmetics bottles or tubes.

Toxins are the food additives, preservatives, junk foods, added-colours, added-flavours, oils and anything that adds stress to the body system. These take time to be eliminated from our body and are the main causes of being overweight, high blood pressure, diabetes and even a few cancers!

HOW DO THEY ACCUMULATE IN OUR BODY? Simple- by your diet. You are what you eat. Every day, we are exposed to different kinds of food flavour additives, preservatives, pesticides, chemicals and so much more. Over time, our body begins to store these in our vital organs, mainly the liver, which is hazardous to our health.

HOW DO I KNOW I AM “TOXIC”? Toxicity in the body is exhibited by the body’s response to the toxins itself such as skin issues, hair issues (mainly hair loss,

dandruff, scaly scalp) weight gain, sluggish, digestive problems, frequent headaches, chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, abnormal thyroid levels, allergies, frequently getting sick, etc. You know your body is not able to handle the toxins or stress as a result of how it reacts.

WHEN DO I BEGIN THE DETOXIFICATION PROGRAM? A detoxification program can be done over the weekends, for at least 48 hours. It is highly recommended to do any detox program for three days at least if you’d like to have a complete program for complete detoxification. This would preferably be in your vacation or a long break from work as detoxification initially causes hunger pangs and light headedness, diziness, and weakness; a sign that shows that your body is eliminating toxins.

It is spring time here in Jeddah and now is the perfect time to cleanse your body from all the winter toxins! Our body needs to be detoxified every three months if we are to ensure that it is functioning at its optimum level. So, what are these toxins, how do they accumulate in our body and how can we get rid of them?

WHY DETOX? Detoxification process is a naturopathic approach by naturopaths and naturopathic physicians where they advise their clients to detox to initially feel mentally, spiritually and physically lighter and better. There are several benefits of detoxification. Here are a few to list:• Weight loss and increase in metabolism

(excellent for hypothyroidism). If you have hit a plateau in weight loss, detoxification process is an excellent kick-start to your system.

• Increased vitality.• Significant improvement in bowel

function (colon cancer and rectal cancer are on-the-rise in KSA).

• Glowing skin and the skin texture improves significantly.

• Stronger immune system, greater sense of emotional and physical well-being.

• Relief from migraines, headaches, fatigue and so much more!

WHERE DO I BEGIN? Starting a detox program is when you are ready. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure or any other chronic illness, please detox under the supervision of a professional naturopath or experienced healthcare practitioner. The sample 3-day detox plan below along with rebuilding and rejuvenation phase can be followed by any healthy individual who has no health issues.

SAMPLE 7-DAY DETOX PHASE ALONG WITH REBUILDING AND REJUVENATION PHASE

First phase is known as the “cleansing phase” where your intestinal organs along with other vital organs are cleansed. The diet consists of green juices and lots of water. It is vital that at least 3 litres of water is consumed through the day, apart from the green juices. There are two green juices that I am very fond of which are: Pineapple, spinach (a cup of pineapple, a cup of spinach, ¼ cup parsley, ½ teaspoon fresh ginger and water). Whole juice and lemon mint juice with fresh ginger.

You can make your own “green combo” by adding your own preferred fruit such as citrus, pineapples, grapes, apples, raspberries and many more along with any vegetable or herb such as celery, broccoli, mint e.t.c. Have at least 2-3 glasses of this “green juice” every day in your cleansing phase along with water and nothing else. No sugar or artificial sugar is added. All kinds of sugar and salt are avoided as well. Vegetable broths without any carbohydrate vegetables can also be taken. * This can be for three days only.

In the “rebuilding phase,” low fat foods, foods rich in fiber such as brown rice, fruits and vegetables are introduced. Fried foods, sugar and salt including meats are avoided. Broiled or baked fish is acceptable. You may have multivitamin supplements in both the stages. This is for at least two days or more, depending on the need.

In the “rejuvenation phase,” a proper diet with fruits and vegetables along with light exercise (walking, jogging) is included and it is highly recommended to perform meditation. This is lifestyle modification. This sample diet will help you curb on your hunger pangs, make you feel lighter, healthier and more balanced “inside-out.”
