DIY PLANTER BOX BENCH DIMENSIONS:

DIY PLANTER BOX BENCH INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Cut the 2x4 boards for the planter box/bench legs: 1. Cut two 2x4 boards to 78" in length each. 2. Cut two 2x4 boards to 16" in length each.

2. Cut the boards for the planter box sides: 1. Cut 16 2x4 boards to 10" in length each 2. Cut 16 2x4 boards to 14 1/2" in length each.

3. Drill two 1 1/2" pocket holes into each end of one side of each of the 10" and 14 1/2" 2x4 boards.

4. Using wood glue and 2 1/2" exterior pocket hole screws, build the left and right side planter box side panels:

o Attach four 10" 2x4 boards to the 1 1/2" side of the 2x4 legs (four boards between each 16” tall legs and 4 boards between each 78” tall legs). Leave a 1/2" gap between the bottom of the legs and the first board, and between each additional board.

5. Using wood glue and 2 1/2" exterior pocket hole screws, attach the front and back planter box boards:

o Attach the 14 1/2" 2x4 boards between the two side panels on both the front and back. The edges of the front and back panels should be flush with the edges of the legs. Pocket holes should face toward the inside of the planter boxes.

6. Cut and attach the 2x4 boards for the bench:

o Cut four 2x4 boards to 32" in length each o Drill two 1 1/2" pocket holes into each end of one side of each board o Use wood glue and 2 1/2" pocket hole screws to attach the 32" boards to each

planter box. The top of the bench boards should be flush with the top boards on the planter boxes and the front and back bench boards should be flush with the front and back legs. There should be a 1" gap between each board. Pocket holes should face down.

7. Cut and attach the 2x4 lattice support boards (these are the boards the lattice will attach to in a future step).

o Cut four 2x4 boards to 10" in length each. o Drill two 1 1/2" pocket holes into each end of one side of each board. o Use wood glue and 2 1/2" exterior pocket hole screws to attach one 10" 2x4 6"

above the top of the planter box, between the two 78" legs on each planter box, and then attach one 10" 2x4 flush with the top of the 78" legs on each planter box. Pocket holes should face in towards the bench.

8. Cut and attach the top front and back trellis boards:

o Cut two 2x4 boards to 47" in length each o Trace a rounded curve on each end of each 2x4 and cut using a jig saw. o Attach one of the 47" boards to the front of the two front legs, making sure it is

centered, using 2 1/2" exterior wood screws (predrill holes first). Attach the other 47" 2x4 to the back of the two back legs, again attaching with 2 1/2" exterior wood screws. The top of each board should be flush with the top of the legs.

9. Cut and attach the top planter box trim boards:

o Cut two 2x4 boards to 19" in length each long end to long end, with each end mitered to 45º

o Cut four 2x4 boards to 19" in length, with one end mitered to 45º and the other end with a 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" section cut out with a jig saw, two of these boards will be flipped and attached in the mirror image.

o Cut two 2x4 boards to 12" in length each. On each end, use a jig saw to cut out a 1" x 1 1/2" section.

o Using wood glue and 2 1/2" exterior wood screws (predrill first), attach the planter box trim boards to the top of the planter box on each side. Make sure the inner diameter of the trim boards is 12" front to back and side to side.

10. Cut (using either table saw or circular saw) and attach the lattice strips:

o Cut two lattice strips to 16" x 56" o Cut one lattice strip to 20" x 35"

o Use the brad nail gun and 1" brad nails to attach each 16x56 lattice strip to the inside edge, between the front and back legs

o Use the brad nail gun and 1" brad nails to attach the 20x35 lattice strip to the top of the trellis, just above the bench area.

11. Sand the planter bench and then apply three coats of exterior polyurethane to seal and protect the wood.

12. Once dry, add a 12" square plastic planter pot to each planter box (make sure the planter pot has a lip to hold it on top of the wood planter box)

Lastly, add some nice plants to each planter box (I planted Hibiscus) and enjoy your beautiful

new bench!
