• The Thapar Group has been closely associated with the production and distribution of coal since its inception in 1929. Pre-nationalisation, the various Group companies owned several coal mines across India, and were collectively considered the second largest producers of coal in the country. To better manage the sales and supplies of coal from the mines owned by various Group companies Karam Chand Thapar & Bros. (Coal Sales) Ltd. (“KCT” or the “Company”) was established in 1943.

• The Company has a diversified business portfolio, which includes coal services and logistics, power trading, mining equipment manufacture and civil works construction:

CSL is the single largest coal handling agency in India, responsible for the entire set of logistical operations involved in the movement of approximately 60 mnmetric tons of coal per annum.

BWf manufactures and supplies mining, material handling and general engineering equipment on a turnkey basis, including all types of fabrication and machining work.

TICIL is one of the premier construction agencies in India having successfully completing several major projects of National importance.

• The The Chairman, Mr. Inder Mohan Thapar, is a pioneer of the Indian coal mining industry. It was under his leadership that the company acquired a reputation of running the most efficient mines in thecountry, and became the second largest indigenous producer of coal.

• Mr. Vikram M. Thapar, joined KCT Coal Sales as Vice-Chairman and Joint Managing Director with a vision to expand and diversify the business. • Mr. Varun A. Thapar, graduated from Brown University, USA, with a dual degree in European History and Economics, joined KCT as a full-time Executive Director in 2009, and is now actively working towards realizing the Company's vision and goals.

Division Overview – Background

• In 1954, KCT formed a JV with Intrafor Cofor of France, called Thapar Intrafor Cofor India Limited ("TICIL" or the "Division"), for developing deep mines.

• The knowledge, expertise and experience acquired in the coal mining industry, supplemented by sophisticated technology from Intrafor Cofor of France made TICIL an acknowledged leader not only in mining but also in hydro-projects that use similar underground methods of tunneling and construction. In 1983, this JV Company was merged with KCT and emerged as the construction arm of the Company specializing in underground works.

• Over the past 36 years, TICIL has undertaken major shaft-sinking works and has executed numerous hydroelectric projects. In the field of hydropower, TICIL has emerged as one of the premier construction agencies successfully completing several major projects of National importance in India.

• Mr. Adarsh Saran is a Senior Vice President at KCT. He has held several key positions within the Group, including that of setting up theoperational and administrative management of its overseas ventures. He joined KCT in 2007 after his retirement from the Board of Directors of IRCON International Limited. • Mr. Samir Saran is Vice President Marketing at TICIL. He has more than 12 years of international experience in finance, business development and consulting. A graduate with distinction from IMD Business School, Switzerland, a BSc. in Business Administration from the University of Bath, and winner of the “Sales Excellence” award from the University of Austin, Texas.

Completed Projects – Kalinadi Hydel Project (810 MW)

For the Kalinadi Hydel Project, TICIL constructed the entire water conductor system from the Intake to the Power House.

Major works comprised the following:

•Completion of a 7.926 m diameter horseshoe shaped concrete lined tunnel. This tunnel was 9.45 km in length with a concrete lining of 30 to 50cms thickness;

•Completion of a 21.30 m diameter restricted orifice type Surge Shaft with top and bottom expansion chambers and gate grooves for control gates with a depth of 65m;

•Completion of three R.C.C. Tunnels connecting the Surge Shaft bottom below the orifice slab with inclined Pressure Shafts at EL 1190 adit, the Steel Lining Assembly and the Lowering Chamber.

•Completion of two horizontal circular steel Penstocks with a 3.50 m diameter;

•Completion of three horizontal pressure shafts of 5.25m diameter and a 50o incline; and

•Completion of a Power House adit with a steel lining chamber for the Penstocks..

Completed Projects – Chamera Hydroelectric Project (540 MW)

• For the Chamera Hydroelectric Project in Himachal Pradesh, TICIL executed 8m wide Access Tunnels to the underground Power House, Transformer Gallery and the Tail Race Tunnel;

• Works included major excavation of the entrance which formed the portal; and

• The total length of tunneling involved was 1.30 km.

The tunnel was driven through meta-volcanic rock, shear seams and water bearing strata. To achieve this, modern tunneling equipment was deployed, including: three boom Tam Rock Hydraulic Jumbos for drilling, automatic rock bolting jumbos, low profile 11 Dux Dumpers, Caterpillars and 7½ cum side dump loaders. Additionally, new Austrian Tunneling Technology was introduced to reduce the need for conventional steel supports.

Completed Projects – Tehri Hydro Power Plant (1,000 MW)

The Tehri Dam Project is one of the most prestigious Projects in India situated on the Bank of River Bhagirathi, the biggest in Asia and the 5th biggest in the world.

TICIL executed major contracts of the Left Bank Diversion Tunnels and the entire Underground Power House Complex (4 x 250 MW) 1000 MW, under the contract Tehri Hydro Power Plant Civil Works Package I, II & III. These were commissioned successfully and handed over to the client, THDC.

The value of Tehri HPP Civil works Package I, II & III (Underground Power House) is over Rs.765 crores (US$ 1.2 billion);

HPP Civil Works Package I

• Works included: intake structure, balance work of head race tunnels, control gate shafts, bifurcation of HRT, butterfly valve cavern, penstock assembly cavern, erection chamber, vertical and horizontal pressure shaft, approach adits and others appurtenant works.

• Total value of works executed as at June 2008 is Rs. 354.76 Cr.

HPP Civil Works Package II

• Works included: machine hall cavern (197.00 X 24.00 X 67.00 m), transformer hall cavern (161.00 X 18.50 x 34.00 m), draft tube, upper and lower expansion chambers, cable and ventilation tunnels, control room, compressor hall and other appurtenant works.


HPP Civil Works Package III

• Work includes: tail race tunnels 1 & 2, approach Adits, TRT exit structure other appurtenant works.

Completed Projects – Other Hydro

Salal Hydroelectric Project (345 MW), Jammu & Kashmir

This project involved the construction of a tail race tunnel that was 1.35 kms in length, in a standard shoe horse shape, with a 11.0m finished diameter and 100.34m cross-sectional area.

Upper Sindh Hydel Project (105 MW)

This project involved the construction of a tunnel on the Sumbal Link from RD 640m to RD 3,060m, of the Upper Sindh Hydel Project Stage -II. The tunnel was 2.42 km in length in a modified horse shoe with anof excavated diameter of 5.45m and a finished diameter of 4.75m.

Pykara Ultimate Stage Hydroelectric Project (150 MW)

The works with the help of Alimak Raise Climbers included the Underground Power House Cavern, the Transformer Hall Cavern, theInclined Cable Tunnel, the Tail Race Tunnel, 6.80 km long, the Pressure Shaft at 60° and 45° inclines with an excavated length of 1.31 km.

Continuing Projects – Adits for Stage II of PSP – THDC India Limited

The Tehri Dam Project is one of the most prestigious Projects in India situated on the Bank of River Bhagirathi, the biggest in Asia and the 5th biggest in the world.

TICIL is currently executing civil works for the construction of Adits for Stage II of PSP for THDC India Limited (formerly Tehri Hydro Development Corporation).

The scope of work includes the following:

•Construction of Adit 8: D-shape 8 m diameter with a length of 604 m;•Construction of Adit 9: D-shape 8 m diameter with a length of 700 m; and•Construction of link between Adits 8 and 9: D-shape 8 m diameter with a length of 610 m.

The current work is valued at Rs. 50 crores.

Continuing Projects – Delhi/ Haryana – Rohtak section of NH-10

• Construction of highways for the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI);

• Works include: design, engineering, finance, construction, operation and maintenance;

• Current project on Delhi/ Haryana border to Rohtak section of NH-10, from 29.70 km to 87.00 km;

• This includes including the construction of Bahadurgarh and Rohtak Bypass in the state of Haryana under NHDP phase IIIA on a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis; and

• This work commenced in May 2008 in a JV company: West Haryana Highway projects Pvt. Ltd with Era Infra Engineering Ltd.

Continuing Projects – Underground Rock Cavern – Phase I – Mangalore

TICIL is engaged in the civil works of the Underground Rock Caverns for the strategic storage of crude oil, (1.5mn MT/ 14mn barrels), at Mangalore, Karnataka, from Engineers India Limited ("EIL"), for Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited ("ISPRL").

This bid, for Rs.403.50 crores, was secured in a 'Reverse Auction' in a Joint Venture with S.K. Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd., ("SK E&C"), Korea, against industry majors such as L&T, HCC and Soma-Marti of Sweden, amongst others.

Salient features of the work includes:

•4 Nos. Rock Caverns of 913 m length, 20 m width and 26~31 m height; •2 Nos. Vertical shafts of 121~131 m length and 7~10 m diameter; •4 Nos. Water Curtain Galleries of 920 m length, 6.5~9 m width and 6.5 m height; •1 No. Access Tunnel of 900 m length, 12 m width and 8 m height; •2 Nos. Gas Connections of 4 m x 4 m; and •2 Nos. Inlet/ Outlet Connections of 7 m x 8 m.

Continuing Projects – Underground Rock Cavern – Phase I – Padur

TICIL is also engaged in the civil works of the Underground Rock Caverns for the strategic storage of crude oil, at Padur, Karnataka, from Engineers India Limited ("EIL"), for Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited ("ISPRL").

This bid, for Rs.376.00 crores, was secured in a 'Reverse Auction' in a Joint Venture with S.K. Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd., ("SK E&C"), Korea.

Salient features of the work includes:

•1 No. Access Tunnel of 1119 M length, 12 M width & 8 Mt height; •4 Nos. Rock Caverns each of 700 M length, 20 M width & 26-31 M height;•4 Nos. Vertical Shafts each of 62 M - 84 M length; and•1 No. Water Curtain Galleries of 1788 M length, 6.5 M height & 6.5 M width.
