McClanahan Professor Director, Division of Endodontics Director, Graduate Endodontics Diplomate, American Board of Endodontics Dr. McClanahan received a B.A. in 1974 and D.D.S. in 1981 both from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1981, he entered the U.S. Navy as a dental officer. Dr. McClanahan was selected by the Navy for civilian specialty training and completed his certificate of residency in endodontics at Northwestern University Dental School as well as a M.S. from Northwestern University in 1989. After three assignments as a clinical endodontist, Dr. McClanahan joined the faculty of the Endodontics Department at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School, Bethesda, MD in 1998 and in 2001, assumed the responsibilities of Chairman of the Endodontics Department and Director of the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Endodontics. Dr. McClanahan retired from active duty in September 2005 and joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota, School of Dentistry in November of 2005. He is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. Dr. McClanahan served as a Director of the American Board of Endodontics 2013-9 and is a Past President of the board. Since April 2019, he serves as a Trustee for the American Association of Endodontists Foundation for Endodontics. Dr. McClanahan will retire 01 Sep 2020.

Scott B. McClanahan Professor Director, Division of Endodontics Director, Graduate Endodontics Diplomate, American Board of Endodontics Dr. McClanahan received a B.A. in 1974 and D.D.S. in 1981 both from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1981, he entered the U.S. Navy as a dental officer. W. Craig Noblett Clinical Associate Professor Director, Division of Endodontics (01 Sep 2020) Director, Graduate Endodontics (01 Sep 2020) Diplomate, American Board of Endodontics Dr. Craig Noblett received his dental degree from UCLA School of Dentistry and his Masters and certificate in Endodontics from the University of Iowa. He has also served as assistant director of the GPR program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital/Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. He has chaired several committees for the American Association of Endodontists and is a past president of the Northern California Academy of Endodontics. He has also served on the Board of Trustees of the California Dental Association and served as Chair of the Committee on Volunteer Placement and the Nominating Committee for the CDA. Dr. Noblett has also served six years as a Director of the American Board of Endodontics including two years as president of the ABE.

Carolina Rodriguez-Figueroa Clinical Associate Professor Director, Undergraduate Endodontics Director, Pre-Clinical Endodontics Course Diplomate, American Board of Endodontics Dr. Carolina Rodriguez-Figueroa was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. In 2002, she received her dental degree from the Universidad Central de Venezuela School of Dentistry. In 2003, she was accepted into the Gerondontology Program at the “Universidad Complutense de Madrid”, Spain and upon completion of the program in 2004, worked in private practice in Venezuela. In 2005, Dr. Rodriguez- Figueroa enrolled in the Full Time Endodontic Program at the “Universidad del Salvador & AOA” in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After completing this program in 2006, she returned to Venezuela to get married and soon moved to the US with her husband, Dr. Luis Delima. In June 2009, she joined the Oral Health Services for Older Adults Program at the University of Minnesota that she completed in May 2011. She received her certificate of residency in endodontics and M.S. degree from the University of Minnesota in 2013. Dr. Rodriguez-Figueroa joined the faculty in September 2013. Daughter Nicole was born in April 2015. Her interests include travel, dancing, cooking and spending time with friends and family.

Ronald Ordinola Zapata Assistant Professor Dr. Ordinola Zapata obtained his D.D.S. degree in 2001 from Inca Garcilaso de la Vega University in Lima-Peru. After practicing for 6 years as a general dentist, Dr. Ordinola Zapata continued his career at the Endodontic Department of the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil where he obtained a Master and a Doctoral degree in Endodontics (2007-2013). In 2014, he moved to USA to continue his training. Dr. Ordinola Zapata completed a 2-year AEGD residency program at Larkin Community Hospital in Miami (2016) and his Endodontic residency program at the IB Bender Endodontic Division, Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia (2018). In his academic career, Dr.Ordinola Zapata has published more than 70 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and lectured internationally. Dr. Ordinola Zapata also serves as Associate Editor of the International Endodontic Journal (UK) and is a member of the scientific advisory board of the Journal of Endodontics (USA).

Residents Jeff Heyse, D.M.D.

Class of 2020

Dr. Heyse was raised in an Air Force family with his two siblings. As a result, his family moved around the country frequently as he grew up but he calls Las Vegas, Nevada home. He graduated from the University of Nevada-Reno in 2007 earning a B.S. in Biology with a minor concentration in Psychology. Staying in Nevada, Dr. Heyse then obtained his D.M.D. degree in 2012 from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine. Immediately following dental school, he commissioned as an officer into the United States Air Force Dental Corps and headed to the east coast to attend an AEGD-1 residency program at Langley AFB, Virginia. After completing his residency in 2013, Dr. Heyse spent three years at his first duty station at Misawa Air Base in Northern Japan enjoying the snow and ramen. After Japan, he came full circle ending his time in the Air Force at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas. Dr. Heyse has a loving wife, two children, and a dog that has adjusted well to no longer being an only child. He and his wife share a passion for travel and working out. In his spare time, he enjoys snowboarding, watching sports, and practicing his amateur DJ skills. Dr. Heyse is excited for the opportunity to continue his education at the University of Minnesota and plans to enter private practice as well as part time teaching after completion of this program.

Chris Lai, D.M.D.

Class of 2020

Dr. Lai was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. He attended the University of British Columbia, graduating with a BSc. in Animal Biology. Dr Lai then obtained his D.M.D. from the University of Manitoba. After graduation, Dr. Lai moved to Calgary, AB where he practiced as a general dentist. In his spare time, he enjoys travelling with his wife, snowboarding, scuba diving, and playing the guitar. Dr. Lai is excited for the big move down to Minnesota to continue his education.

Dusty Weitz, D.M.D.

Class of 2020

Dr. Weitz was born in Pullman, Washington and grew up in nearby Moscow, Idaho. Dr. Weitz’s father was a dentist, giving him much exposure to the field from an early age. In 1996, he began an accelerated dental program at the University of the Pacific. After graduating in 2001, at the age of 22, he joined his father in private practice. His years of work experience have confirmed his interest in endodontics and he is excited to take his skills to the next level. Dr. Weitz enjoys spending time with his wife Melissa and their two children, Alexander and Elizabeth. Outside of dentistry, Dr. Weitz has diverse interests that include being a private pilot and an avid skier; he enjoys travel and he spent a year abroad in high school as a Rotary exchange student. Other recreational activities he enjoys include snowmobiling, motorcycle riding, and boating. In addition to his work as a general dentist, Dr. Weitz has operated a family farm and cattle ranch. He and his family are excited about spending the next few years in Minneapolis. After completion of the residency program, Dr. Weitz plans to return to Idaho to enter private practice and hopes to continue to be involved in both education and organized dentistry.

Ashley Asano, D.D.S. Class of 2021 Dr. Asano was born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii where she enjoyed kayaking, camping, fishing, swimming and bodyboarding. She graduated with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in Chemistry from Seattle University in 2009. During the year between college and dental school she worked in a small Japanese dessert shop, coached her high school water polo team and tutored students in biology and math. Dr. Asano obtained her D.D.S. from the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry in 2014. She completed a 2-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program at UMKC before joining a group private practice in Saint Joseph, Missouri. Dr. Asano has a multitude of interests including amateur cooking, cycling, rock climbing, hiking and traveling. She enjoys chasing waterfalls and hosting dinner parties for her friends. After completion of the residency program, Dr. Asano plans to enter private practice and incorporate teaching, mentorship and dental mission trips abroad into her career. She is excited to be a part of the University of Minnesota but is very aware that winter is coming.

Jonas Dale, D.D.S.

Class of 2021

Dr. Dale was born and raised in Crosslake, Minnesota. He attended the University of Minnesota, graduating with a B.S. in Biology. He took a gap year before matriculating into dental school at the University of Minnesota, working for Vail Resorts and a local dental office in Vail, Colorado. After dental school, Dr. Dale completed a General Practice Residency at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Dale is excited for the opportunity to return to the University of Minnesota to continue his education in endodontics. In his free time he enjoys water sports, golfing, skiing and spending time with his wife, family and dog.

Lisa Kandella, D.D.S. Class of 2021

Dr. Kandella was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec. Staying in Montreal, she graduated dental school from McGill University in 2017 and went on to complete an AEGD at the University of Rochester. Dr. Kandella then practiced general dentistry for a year in Rochester, NY before starting the graduate endodontic program at the University of Minnesota. Some of her hobbies include leisure reading, cooking and watching and playing many different sports. Dr. Kandella is excited to spend the next few years in Minnesota and hopes to pursue a career in private practice and education once residency is complete.

Michael Pham, D.D.S. Class of 2021

Dr. Pham was born and raised in Milpitas, CA. He attended University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA where he earned his B.S. in Biological Sciences in 2012. Afterwards, he moved to San Francisco, CA and continued his education with Pacific where he attained his D.D.S. in 2015. Upon graduation, Dr. Pham was commissioned as Lieutenant into the United States Navy Dental Corps. He was first stationed at Naval Air Station Oceana Dam Neck Annex to complete his credentialing tour. Following that, he served overseas at Naval Support Activity Bahrain before completing his service at Naval Base Kitsap in Silverdale, WA. Dr. Pham likes to enjoy the outdoors in his spare time by hiking, snowboarding, and exploring other various activities. He is excited for the next part of his career in Minneapolis.

Mallory Hackbarth, D.M.D. Class of 2022 Dr. Mallory Hackbarth grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and Philadelphia. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 2010. In 2011, she continued at Wake Forest University earning a Masters of Science in Management. Dr. Hackbarth moved to Boston and earned her DMD degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 2016. After dental school, she moved to Flagstaff, Arizona and provided dental care at an Indian Healthcare Clinic while earning her Advanced Education in General Dentistry. After four years practicing as a general dentist in Tennessee and Florida, she followed her passion for endodontics and committed to furthering her education at University of Minnesota. Dr. Mallory Hackbarth loves to travel and explore new cities. She is excited for the next two years in Minneapolis and when she has any free time hopes to attend a Vikings game, enjoy some beautiful hiking, and indulge in her love of cooking and baking.

Meghan Montoya, D.D.S. Class of 2022

Dr. Montoya was born and raised in Los Alamos, New Mexico where she ran on the local cross-country team and worked for the Los Alamos National Laboratory. She graduated with a B.S in Chemistry and a minor in Biochemistry from The College of William and Mary in 2015. Dr. Montoya obtained her D.D.S from the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine in 2019 where she completed a mission trip to Guatemala and helped lead the women’s dental club. She then went on to complete a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program at the University of New Mexico Hospital in 2020. Her hobbies and interests include running, biking, hiking, skiing and knitting and she enjoys volunteering for Special Olympics. Dr. Montoya is excited to be a part of the graduate endodontic program at the University of Minnesota and hopes to pursue a career in private practice once the residency is complete.

Ki Hong Park, D.M.D.

Class of 2022

Dr. Park was born in Seoul, South Korea and immigrated to the US when he was 15 years old. He graduated with B.S.E in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor in 2009 and obtained his D.M.D. degree from the Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine in 2013. Upon graduation, he pursued the career in the U.S. Army Reserve. Dr. Park then switched to Active Duty and practiced as a general dentist at Fort Hood, Texas from 2014 to 2016. He completed a 2-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program at Fort Hood, Texas and M.S. in Oral Biology from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences from 2016 to 2018. After spending four years in Texas, Dr. Park served as a Supervisory Dentist of a 26-chair dental clinic at Fort Campbell, Kentucky from 2018 to 2020. Dr. Park and his wife, Jessica, share a passion for travel and photography. Dr. Park is excited to start the new chapter of life at the University of Minnesota and plans to enter private practice after completion of this program.

David Schuweiler, D.D.S. Class of 2022

Dr. Schuweiler was born and raised in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He attended the University of Minnesota and obtained a B.S. in Biology. He took three years after graduation to teach at a local college and participate in research focusing on cardiovascular disease and diabetes. In 2015, Dr. Schuweiler graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, then completed a General Practice residency at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Minneapolis. He had been practicing and teaching in the private and federal sectors prior to making the leap to advance his education in endodontics, a specialty that he has come to be passionate about. Dr. Schuweiler enjoys cooking, working on classic cars and fishing, but above all loves spending time with his family. After graduation, he hopes to enter private practice in addition to continuing involvement in education and mentorship.
