2018 CHAMPIONSHIP

HIGHLIGHTSWest Texas A&M claims first indoor title in program history: West Texas A&M made program history as the top ranked Lady Buffs claimed their first NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship in program history. They registered 53 total points including a pair of individual national champions and 10 All-Americans. Leading the way for West Texas A&M were Rellie Kaputin and Fatim Affessi. Kaputin won the individual title in the long jump with a best of 6.24 meters (20-5.75), a new facility record. Her teammate Affessi finished third in the long jump. The two Lady Buffs switched places on the podium in the triple jump as this time Affessi took the top stop with a best of 13.09 meters (42-11.50), another facility record. Western State finished second in the team standings while taking home three individual national titles. Alicja Konieczek was involved in all three for the Mountaineers. Konieczek successfully defended her titles in the mile run and the 3,000 meter run. She was also the anchor for the national championship winning distance medley relay team that also featured Aneta Konieczek, Jenice Whitehead and Bailey Sharon. Konieczek became one of three women to earn five indoor national titles in her career.Lincoln (Missouri) took home a third place finish as a team. The Blue Tigers didn’t have an individual champion but placed third or higher in all five events in which they competed. Diana Cauldwell finished as the national runner-up in the triple jump with a mark of 12.81 meters. Cauldwell also earned All-American honors in the long jump, placing third with a distance of 6.15 meters. Rene Medley also earned multiple All-American honors, as she took second in the 60-meter dash (7.39) and third in the 200-meter dash (24.05). Renea Ambersley, meanwhile, closed out the Blue Tigers’ performance by finishing as the national runner-up in the 400 meters (54.58).Mary finished fourth at the event, the best finish in program history. Alexis Zeis led the way for the Marauders as she successfully defended her 5,000-meter run title from 2017. She dominated the field beating the runner-up by almost three full seconds. Zeis also finished second in the 3,000-meter run.Angelo State had two individual national champions as they finished seventh in the team standings. Kaitlin Lumpkins won the high jump with a best of 1.78 meters (5-10). She cleared the height in a jump off after Pittsburg State’s Emilee Iverson was unable to do so. The second individual title for the Rambelles was Kami Norton in the pentathlon. Norton had a score of 3,983 which was more than enough to hold off runner up Nicole Warwick of Azusa Pacific. Norton also finished seventh in the 60-meter hurdles and eighth in the long jump.Other individual national champions included: Dianna Johnson of Adams State (60-meter dash), Ariel Jackson of Lindenwood (Missouri) (200-meter dash), Shannon Ralawan of Saint Augustine’s (400-meter dash), Danielle McCormick of Alaska Anchorage (800-meter run), Janelle Perry of Ursuline (60-meter hurdles), Grand Valley State 4x400-meter relay (Chant’e Roberts, Angela Ritter, Jessica Eby, Rachel Walters), Emily Presley of Missouri Southern (pole vault), Sunflower Greene of Millersville (shot put), and Destiny Coward of Southern Connecticut State (weight throw).
