What was your favorite Key Club moment?
The very first key club moment was right after I had given my speech for freshmen representative- I
could not believe the amount of support and encouragement I received from my peers. Key Club has
helped shaped my confidence since day one! There is no way I would be where I am today without
the leaderships experience Key Club has given me. Also, how can I forget DCON 2012? As a freshman,
it was an overwhelming experience but I believe I attended that convention for the sole purpose of
coming back more motivated than ever. Every moment I recall from that convention further excites
me for DCON 2014!
Why did you join key club?
During a lousy lunch period freshmen year, I was lucky to overhear a senior mention a key club meet-
ing that would take place after school! I remember signing up for clubs such as PAWS, Hip-Hop, Model
United Nations, etc. but I did not feel the same type of energy from either of those clubs like I did
when I walked into my first Key Club meeting. Being able to witness so many students come together
for community service with the guidance of student officers that knew EXACTLY what they were doing
as leaders was an unforgettable moment for me. I fell in love quickly and I never really “had time” to
be a part of other clubs. Key Club was definitely the one for me. S/O to the 2012 key club officers that
truly helped bring out the best in me!

Why did you run for Lieutenant Governor?
I ran for Lieutenant Governor not only to enhance my
skills and contribute ideas but also to continue the leg-
acy of exceptional leadership that has been demon-
strated throughout our division! Division 65 is truly
made up of hard working, exceptional students that
know exactly why they love being a part of Key Club.
Being your Lieutenant Governor gives me the opportu-
nity to work close with our schools to communicate
and relay important information that can benefit one
another. Not only do I have the communication and
interactive skills but I have YOU to help me continue
our journey of making our division the best in our dis-
trict! We have the motivation, intellect, and SPIRIT to
change the world with our actions, one service pro-
ject at a time. There is no reason as to why I wouldn’t
accept the opportunity to serve as your LTG and give
back all that you have given me.
Any plans for our division?
Of course! My goal is to keep our division close, motivate each and every one of you, and to
keep the purpose of service close to our hearts. We can accomplish this and much more as long
as we enjoy ourselves in the process. During my term, I would like to introduce a points system for
each individual club to be able to see how they can improve and demonstrate what Key Club is
all about. This points system will help each club recognize how they could excel in their leader-
ship and participation skills. At the end of my term, I will award the club with the highest points a
well deserved party (because everyone loves parties!). I believe hard work should be recognized
because it motivates us to commit to our duties. I would also love for DCMs to be your clubs time
to shine! Share with us your accomplishments and how you were able to get there. We want to
hear it!
Facts About Me:

HILLSBORO KIWANIS CELBRATES THEIR 60TH ANNIVERSARY
“Old friends and new, about 60 of us joined together at
Meriwether National Golf Course to celebrate 60 years of Kiwanis in Hillsboro. 5 Pacific Northwest District Governors attended: Calvin Clayton, Patrick Ewing and his wife Kristina, Frank Morehouse and his wife Beth, Incoming Governor Bob Munger and his wife Judy, and current Governor Pam Smith and her husband Greg. What a pleasure! So many people worked together. Treasurer Ruth Mendenhall greeted attendees at the registration table. Ron Powne led songs; Kas Kachmarek led the invocation. Mike Schmidt introduced past members Ken Reed and wife June, Bruce Hanna and wife Kathy. We enjoyed letter greetings from Int'l Pres. Gunter Gasser and from former Int'l Pres. Sylvester Neal. President-Elect Bill Meyer introduced PNW District guests and visitors. Thim Baker brought smiles to faces as he shared anecdotes from assorted service projects and fund raisers. Penny Walters brought humor to the evening with a sampling of puppets from her company, Penny's Puppets. Gov. Pam Smith, our guest speaker, and her husband Greg attended from Renton, WA. We are thankful for this special visit from our PNW leadership. We are definitely part of something bigger than ourselves. Susie Meyer, Gary Ellsworth, and Nicholas Nafez revealed answers to the "Things We May Not Have Mentioned" game which Mel Adams had made, enabling us to learn little-known facts about almost everyone present (We now know who plays tuba, who was a rabbit skinner, etc.). Everyone enjoyed browsing club history documents and photos
on the history display.” - Elizabeth Adams (Hillsboro Kiwanis President)

Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus (MNT) is a deadly dis-
ease that causes painful convulsions and ex-
treme sensitivity to light and touch for newly born
babies birthed in unsanitary conditions. This dis-
ease is contracted when a pregnant women
comes in contact with Tetanus spores from the
ground or from unclean tools used during the
birthing process. The slightest touch by an infants
mother will cause inconsolable pain and in less
than a week, the baby will die from Tetanus’
painful symptoms. In the course of a year, 60,000
babies will die from this easily preventable dis-
ease.
So far, with the help of UNICEF and Kiwanis, 34
countries have been vaccinated from MNT,
though it still remains a deadly threat in 25 coun-
tries. In order to ELIMINATE Maternal/Neonatal
Tetanus for good, more than 100 million mothers
and babies must be immunized, costing an esti-
mated $110 million USD. Our goal is to rid the
world of Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus by 2015.
With the help of the entire K-family, we will be
able to put an end to Tetanus related deaths.

WESTVIEW EMPHASIS
With just a movement of 13 muscles, you
can make someone’s day. A smile is a
welcoming gesture. It is kind, warm, and
genuine. A smile uplifts our own mood
and others as well.
While the vast majority of those who
live in the developed world are treated
and lead normal lives, millions of children
and adults in developing countries suffer
from unrepaired clefts. Many are aban-
doned shortly after birth or kept hidden
away from society. Most find it difficult
to attend school, communicate easily,
find jobs or get married.
Cleft lip and palate is one of the most com-mon birth anomalies in the world.
Approximately 1 in every 700 babies is
born with a cleft in North America…
Clefts are a major problem in developing countries where there are still millions of children who are suf-fering with unrepaired clefts. The cleft’s causes are unknown. This congenital condition happens in the first three months of pregnancy when the sides of the lip and the roof of the mouth do not fuse to-gether as they should.
Children with cleft lips face a multitude of challenges:
-Feeding difficulty: unable to suck properly because roof of mouth is not formed completely. Food can easily come out of the nose.
-Ear infections and hearing loss: opening of roof of the mouth and lip causes decreased muscle func-tion, which can lead to delay in speech or abnor-mal speech.
-Dental problems: teeth may not erupt normally and orthodontic treatment is usually required.
-Cosmetic abnormality: the child may be treated as an outcast. No one should ever experience that.
Fortunately, cleft lip and palate is treatable through a series of surgeries and therapies.
…But in countries such as India and Peru, the
cleft occurs 1 in every 500 births.
weixiao (wei • shao): v. to smile
“Wei Xiao” means “smile” in Chinese.

Why we walk
When you walk in March for Babies, you give
hope to the more than half a million babies born
too soon each year. The money you raise sup-
ports programs in your community that help
moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies. And it
funds research to find answers to the problems
that threaten our babies. We’ve been walking
since 1970 and have raised an incredible $2 bil-
lion to benefit all babies.
MODA CENTER, PORTLAND, OR
9:00AM, SATURDAY, APRIL 26, 2014
What to expect
This year, more than 7 million people will join their
family, friends and colleagues in 900 communi-
ties across the nation. Our volunteers and staff
will encourage and support you in your efforts to
raise awareness and funds. No matter if this is
your first year or your 25th, you can expect the
event to be fun, compelling and rewarding.

Dear Division Sixty-Five Key Clubbers,
This year has been amazing, and I am so thankful to have been given such an incredible opportunity to
serve as your 2013-2014 Lieutenant Governor. I first new I wanted to serve as Lieutenant Governor when I
attended my first divisional event and saw Susie elected as LtG way back in January 2012. Today, I can’t
believe that I am writing my last divisional newsletter (giving me the feels as I write this.) Even though this is
my last newsletter as an LtG, I will still be around to serve the division to the best of my ability in the
upcoming Key Club year, when Tasmia takes over as the new LtG.
Looking back on my term, this has definitely been the most stressful, emotional, overwhelming, yet
rewarding and most cherished moments of my life so far. The friendships and bonds I’ve made with people
in our division are one’s I will never forget. Throughout my term I worked hard to strengthen the bonds
between the schools in the division; seeing how divisional attendance at events has increased over 3-fold
from years past, and legitimate friendships have been made between Key Clubbers from different schools,
I hope this reflects on my as a Lieutenant Governor to strengthen our division as a family.
Another goal of mine was to grow our division through active membership and participation. Mostly
through connections and pure luck, I’ve managed to get in contact with prospective Key Club members
at Liberty High School, Jesuit, Valley Catholic and ACMA. Though these schools have yet to be chartered, I
believe Tasmia will do an incredible job of getting these schools chartered during her term. Definitely, one
of the more emotional happenings of my term would have to be Liberty and their situation. The amount of
dedication and persistence I saw on their board was overwhelming. Through holding fundraisers, gaining
the support of their fellow peers, the girls of Liberty HS managed to spread the word of Key Club
throughout the school. Unfortunately, after a very heated and emotional meeting, the prospect of having
a Key Club was denied by the administrators. Even though they were denied, I believe these girls, with the
help of Tasmia will receive their club charter. Regardless of the outcome, the cooperation and
encouragement of the entire division is definitely a moment I’ll remember from my term.
I knew that running for Lieutenant Governor as a Sophomore was a long shot, having been quite
inexperienced as an officer and not being able to drive for a period of time, but I do believe my
accomplishments and hard work for the division overlooks that fact. As a Lieutenant Governor, I wanted to
upkeep our divisional traditions, but also start some new ones to continue on into the future. Things I
wanted to continue were events such as the Divisional Beach Clean up, the Potlucks/Movie nights. Some
things I wanted to add to our division were the summer carwashes, balloon fights, and DCM service
projects.
I am so proud of everything our schools and clubs have accomplished this year! Not only that, but I’ve
seen amazing leaders flourish throughout the year, from club officers, to dedicated Key Clubbers, making
a bigger difference in the world. This year has been such an incredible experience and I’ve grown and
learned so much not only about Key Club and the different ways to serve, but also about myself, and the
leader inside of me I never knew I had. I hope this year was as fulfilling to you all as it was to me. Thank you
so much for giving me the privilege of serving as this years Lieutenant Governor. Much love.
PS: Officers. Please be good to Tasmia, and help make her term as easy as you’ve made mine.
PPS: I’ll still be around in the next year (I’m only a junior!)
