    The Baptism of The Lord

“I have baptized you with water; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” Mark 1: 3-8

  • From Fr. Jairo

Too often we try to quench our thirsts and satisfy our hungers by turning to something or someone else. Yet, no one other than God can satisfy the hungry heart; not alcohol, drugs, sex, food, human beings, or any theology or philosophy alone. They might provide temporary relief, but most often they leave us thirsting for more and trying to feed a hunger that human means cannot feed. We even try power or control over others and think, “If I can control something or someone, I will feel satisfied.” But when the control no longer holds power we are thirstier than when we began.

Only God can satisfy our deepest longings and quench our greatest thirsts. The Christmas season, which ends today, reminds us that Jesus became human so that we might be one with God and one another, through the power of the Spirit. Jesus’ death and resurrection teach us that only by admitting our powerlessness and our need for a power greater than ourselves can we hope to find true peace, serenity, healing, hope, forgiveness, and life. Blood and water flowed from Christ’s side on the cross and gave birth to the church, the living body of Christ. Baptism makes us one with that body, members of the church; it offers a union with God that can begin to quench our deepest longings. Baptism does not promise life without suffering or pain or sadness. It does promise that life is easier if we belong to Christ than it would be if we try to go it alone or turn to someone or something else that cannot satisfy us in the end.

Pope Francis said: “To suffer is to take the difficulty and to carry it with strength, so that the difficulty does not drag us down. To carry it with strength: this is a Christian virtue.... This means do not let ourselves be overcome by difficulties. This means that the Christian has the strength not to give up, to carry difficulties with strength. Carry them, but carry them with strength. It is not easy, because discouragement comes, and one has the urge to give up and say, ‘Well, come on, we’ll do what we can but no more.’ But no, it is a grace to suffer. In difficulties, we must ask for this grace. It is also true that when we witness our own baptism in water and the Spirit, we live Paul’s words today: we join the Spirit, the water, and the blood in giving testimony to the One who can fill us with the presence of God’s love and mercy that quench our thirsts and feed our deepest longings. For what do you thirst? For what do you hunger? As we end this Christmas season turn to Jesus who came to quench all our thirsts and satisfy our hungry

hearts; Jesus, who has given all water the power to fill us with God’s Spirit; Jesus, the Word, who showers us with God’s mercy and love. St. Francis de Sales preached: “let God be the air in which your heart breathes at ease.” Take a deep breath. Remember your baptism. Sign yourself with holy water. Take a drink of water and refresh your baptism today. Then pray for peace in your heart, your home, our church, and our world. Let these simple actions be our way to seek the Lord in our hunger and thirst. Let these simple acts remind us to

live like Jesus and invite others to come to the water. For by our baptism we, too, are God’s beloved daughters and

sons. Come to the water and wash all whom you meet today with the refreshing presence of Jesus Christ.
