Mass Intentions….Not Just for the Deceased

According to the Catholic Dictionary, the definition of a Mass Intention is: The object for which a priest offers the Eucharistic Sacrifice. This intention is distinct from the priest's decision to offer Mass, which is necessary for valid celebration. It is also distinct from the effects of the Mass which benefit those who take part in the sacrifice and attend the Mass. These are called the special fruits of the Mass and extensively are without limit, as are also the effects on the entire Church, called the general fruits of the Mass. Mass intentions refer to the particular purpose for which a specific Mass is offered. This may be to honor God or thank him for blessings received. But technically a Mass intention means that the sacrifice is offered for some person(s) living or dead. Also called the application of a Mass, it pertains to the ministerial fruits of the Mass. These fruits are both extensively and intensively finite in virtue of the positive will of Christ. Other things being equal, the more often the sacrifice is offered the more benefit is conferred. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic Sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God” (1032). So, what does it mean to have a Mass Intention or a Mass Offering for someone? Philip Kosloski from Aleteia.org writes, “When a priest celebrates Mass each day, he offers each celebration of Eucharist for a particular person or intention. By doing so he applies special graces from God upon that person or intention.” Anyone can request a Mass Intention for the living or the dead for different reasons; one may be requested in “thanksgiving” – a thank you to God our loving Father for giving us the gift of life, or a thank you for watching over our families. You can offer a Mass in celebration of the living for family or friends on their birthday or Wedding Anniversary, even for a celebration of sacraments received, or for prayers that have been answered. By offering a Mass Intention, you are giving an individual (Catholic or Not Catholic) the benefit of spiritual graces that come with having a Mass said on their behalf. The most common request is for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. In an article written by Fr. William Saunders, he reminds us about the importance of offering a Mass Intention. “One must never forget the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one’s soul. Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical "Mirae caritatis" (1902) beautifully elaborated this point and emphasized the connection between the communion of saints with the Mass. The reason that this tradition has been passed on for centuries is because of the many spiritual fruits that result from this form of prayer. The celebration of the Eucharist is the highest form of worship in the Catholic Church because we unite ourselves with Christ's sacrifice on the cross in worship of his Father. This tradition is also seen in St. Augustine’s Confessions (c.397), where St. Monica asks St. Augustine: “One thing only I ask you., that you remember me at the altar of the Lord.” If you would like to schedule a Mass Intention for the repose of the soul of someone deceased or a Mass Intention in thanksgiving or celebration, please call Toni at Divine Infant Jesus (708-865-8071) or Karen at Divine Providence (708-562-3364) and we will gladly schedule your Mass Intention ($15 stipend) at either church. Mass intentions may be scheduled at daily Mass 8:00am on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday at Divine Providence and Thursday, Friday, Saturday at Divine Infant Jesus. You may also schedule a Mass Intention for the Mass of Anticipation at 4:00pm at Divine Providence or the 5:00pm Mass at Divine Infant Jesus. The Sunday Masses are at 8:30am at Divine Providence and 10:00am at Divine Infant Jesus. Pope IV said, “The Mass is the most perfect form of prayer!” It has immense power and countless miracles and conversions have occurred throughout the centuries by offering Masses for a specific intention or person. Mass Intentions are a great treasure of the Church and have a spiritual weight that is incalculable. May we all have the hope that someone will offer a Mass for us… Karen L. THANK YOU! To ALL who prayed for rain at the

4:00pm Mass on Saturday! BUT, we need more rain,

Keep Praying!!

Last Sunday, I used a story to help illustrate Jesus’ wisdom offered to us in the Gospel, “where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” I thought it an appropriate reminder for me, anyway, as to recognizing my own priorities/treasures in life and how we Christians are called to live in our families, in our society and in our own community. It’s not always easy to recognize the Lord in others, however, that need not keep us from trying!

The Messiah is Among You There was once an old stone monastery tucked away in the middle of a picturesque forest. For many years people would make the significant detour required to seek out this monastery. The peaceful spirit of the place was healing for the soul.

In recent years however fewer and fewer people were making their way to the monastery. The monks had grown jealous and petty in their relationships with one another, and the animosity was felt by those who visited.

The Abbot of the monastery was distressed by what was happening and poured out his heart to his good friend Jeremiah. Jeremiah was a wise old Jewish rabbi. Having heard the Abbot’s tale of woe he asked if he could offer a suggestion. “Please do” responded the Abbot. “ Anything you can offer.”

Jeremiah said that he had received a vision, an important vision, and the vision was this: the messiah was among the ranks of the monks. The Abbot was flabbergasted. One among his own was the Messiah! Who could it be? He knew it wasn’t himself, but who? He raced back to the monastery and shared his exciting news with his fellow monks.

The monks grew silent as they looked into each other’s faces. Was this one the Messiah? From that day on the mood in the monastery changed. Joseph and Ivan started talking again, neither wanting to be guilty of slighting the Messiah. Pierre and Naibu left behind their frosty anger and sought out each other’s forgiveness. The monks began serving each other, looking out for opportunities to assist, seeking healing and forgiveness where offence had been given.

As one traveler, then another, found their way to the monastery word soon spread about the remarkable spirit of the place. People once again took the journey to the monastery and found themselves renewed and transformed. All because those monks knew the Messiah was among them.

LISTEN TO JESUS AND THE PROPHETS Prophets have always had a tough row to hoe. Their words, often unwelcome, are used against them to persecute and even kill them. Such was the fate of the Old Testament prophets, and Jeremiah is a great example of this. Jesus endured opposition from sinners, and did not turn back from a shameful death in order to rise to a glorious new life. The ultimate prophet, Jesus sought to warn the people of his time and ours of the divisions that his words would cause, showing himself to be the prophet of all time. We all need to look at our divisions and dilemmas in light of Jesus’ teachings and warnings, and seek to understand all that he has proclaimed and taught about what will happen if we fail to listen. SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: St. John Eudes Tuesday: St. Bernard Wednesday: St. Pius X Thursday: The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary Friday: St. Rose of Lima Saturday: St. Bartholomew

St. Rose of Lima Feast Day: August 23

Patron of Latin America and Philippines

Historians remember St. Rose of Lima for her piety and chastity. Born in 1586 in Lima, Peru to Spanish colonists, and named Isabel Flores de Olivia, she was exceptionally beautiful. Her beauty was so great that she was nicknamed "Rose," a name that remains with her to this day. According to legend, a servant had a vision where her face turned into a rose. At her confirmation in 1597, she officially took the name of Rose. From an early age, Rose wanted to become a nun. She often prayed and fasted in secret. She performed secret penances, some of which were painful and severe. She performed daily adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and took daily communion. As a young woman, her beauty began to attract suitors. To deter these men, St. Rose marred her face, rubbing it with pepper to make it blister. She cropped her hair short. Her parents opposed her plan to take a vow of chastity. This resulted in a clash of wills, because her parents wanted her to marry. Her father eventually relented and gave her a room to herself. St. Rose kept herself cloistered in her room, spending long periods in prayer. It was said she slept only two hours per night so as to have more time for prayer. She quit eating meat altogether, an extreme dietary restriction for that time. When she turned 20, she was permitted to join the Third Order of St. Dominic. She continued a life of extreme prayer, fasting and penance. On one occasion she burned her hands as a self-imposed act of penance. She was known to wear a heavy silver crown, with spikes that could pierce her flesh. The spikes reminded her of the Crown of Thorns. At one point, one of the spikes become so lodged in her skull that the crown was removed with great difficulty. St. Rose died on August 25, 1617, at the age of 31. According to legend, she accurately predicted the date of her death. Her funeral was a major event attended by all the city's authorities. Pope Clement IX beatified her in 1667 and Pope Clement X recognized her as a saint, canonizing her in 1671. Her feast day is August 23 around the world, although some countries, like Peru, celebrate her on August 30.

St. Rose is the patroness of embroiderers, gardeners, florists, those who suffer ridicule for their piety, and people who suffer family problems.
