echnology has quickened
the pace o almost all aspects
o our lives. Many job seekers
attempt to maximize their job
search by utilizing their home
computers and internet to reach
a larger number o potential
employers than just knocking
doors. With the number o
recruiting websites available it is
easy to conduct a brie search and
blast out emails to hundreds o
potential employers. On one local
website a simple keyword search
or a sales position returned
over 600 jobs in the Columbus
Metropolitan area. A couple
keystrokes later and a resume can
be sent to each one o them. Repeatthis search with the numerous
career websites that are available
and a job hopeul can send out
thousands o emails in a matter
o minutes. However, when it
comes to submitting resumes
in response to job postings, a
slower more careul approach
should be considered. Ultimately
a hiring decision is made by a
living, breathing individual or
team. So, no matter the medium
which resumes are collected,
recruiting is still a very personal
process. Attention to details can
set a candidate apart or eliminatethem rom consideration.
An email may be the rst
contact that a hiring manager has
with a candidate. It is imperative
that the communication does
not eliminate a candidate rom
consideration. First impressions
do matter. With email there are
no second chances to correct
misspellings or grammatical
errors. A local insurance agency
recruiter has said that his
electronic postings bring in two
hundred resumes a week. No
individual recruiter has the time
to read that many resumes. Very quickly a recruiter must eliminate
candidates based on the response
to the postings.
In order to ensure that
your resume is not summarily
dismissed as soon as it is received

La tecnología ha avanzado
a un ritmo que casi cubre todos
los aspectos de nuestras vidas.
Muchos solicitantes de trabajo
procuran llevar al máximo su
búsqueda de trabajo utilizando
computadoras y el internet para
contactar un número mayor de
empleadores. Con el número
de páginas web de empleos que
están disponibles, es ácil de re-
alizar una búsqueda breve de tra-
bajo y enviar correos electrónicos
a cientos de empleadores. Al eje-cutar una búsqueda sencilla de
palabra clave, para una posición
de ventas, el resultado ue de más
de 600 trabajos en el área Metro-
politana de Columbus. Con un
solo impulso un resumen puede
ser enviado a cada uno de esos
trabajos.

Te ollowing recommendations are suggested:
1- Always include a meaningul subject that indicates
why you are sending a resume. For example, Subject:
Bilingual Sales Proessional Resume.
2- Compose your email as i you were writing a proessional
cover letter, but be brie. It should be ormal and include
appropriate punctuation. Never include emoticons such
as ;-), use ALLCAPS or multiple expression marks like!!! ??? Tis is rude and unproessional.
3- Te email should always address the individual by
his/her name. I no contact name is listed, then an
attempt should be made to nd one. Pick up the
phone i necessary. An email that does not reerence
the specic job applied or or the person to whom
it should be directed indicates a lack o attention to
detail or eort.
4- Always pay attention to the employer’s requests and
make sure to send what is required. I they ask or a
particular le ormat, i.e. PDF or Word document do
not reer them to your resume web site. I you don’t
have the ability to convert your resume to PDF, ASCII
or ext only ormat then get help.
5- Don’t apply or jobs that you are not qualied or. I
requirements indicate you must have an advanced
degree and you never nished high school, then don’t
apply.
6- Many recruiters will post the same job opportunities
on more than one web site. Keep track o where
you send your resumes and the job description and
requirements.
7- I an interview is granted, never ask the recruiter to
send you a Job description and pay rate beore your
interview.
8- When sending resumes online include your name as
part o the le name (e.i.ValeriaGomezsales2009) A
generic name such as myresume.doc will get lost.
9- Make sure to include your email in all attachments.
It should be simple and refect a proessional image.
Avoid using email address such as Ilike2party,chicacaliente or machoman etc
A proper use o email when sending resumes may
help you reach more potential employers and open
opportunities or an interview. However, care must be
given to not make it so impersonal that you are quickly
eliminated rom consideration.

How long have you lived in Columbus? I currently live in Grove City Ohio but have been working in Columbus now or about 2 years.
What brought you to Columbus? I did some work with a small businessin Ohio back in 2005 and enjoyed the area. My wie and I were looking ora place to venture to rom exas and chose Columbus. At the same time,we ound a church in Grove City where we subsequently committed towork and help or 2 years.
Who has been your greatest inspiration? I would have to say my wieDaniela. She is a very driven person and very detailed oriented and inmost cases keeps me on task. I tend to be a very passive, happy go lucky person and she keeps me motivated to keep pursuing my passions anddreams in lie.
What do you think is the biggest obstacle that Latinos face? I would have to say thelanguage barrier, more specically the accent or Latinos. Sometimes corporations canmistake a heavy accent or being uneducated. For example i you hear someone speak with a British account, you automatically assume rom the accent, that they are smart
and educated. Te opposite is sometimes true or Latinos, even i they possess greatskill sets.
What do you think of Latinos becoming the largest minority group? I think that isgreat! Te Latin American culture is ull o rich heritage with many traditions, oods, colors, etc. I think the blending o Latin American culture with the many dierentcultures in America is a great thing.
What have been your greatest accomplishments? Overcoming major obstacles in my lie during my high school years and also partly into my twenties.
What word of advice would you give to our youth? Actually three words, Educa-tion, Service and Hard Work. Education is vital to business now days. Te road withno education takes a lot longer to get where you're going. Also, always give back tosociety, social networks, church or anything you can involve yoursel in that will notproduce sel reward. Tis gives you a better appreciation o who you are as a person. Finally, always work hard to attain your goals and never give up even when you ail at
something. Chances are the more you ail the quicker you will succeed.
¿Qué consejo daría usted a nuestra juventud? Realmente tres palabras, Educación,Servicio y rabajo duro.
