We are a bunch of keen adventurers and explorers. Over 70% of the earth’s surface is water. Mulitply that by the depth and that’s a whole lot of volume to be explored. It

makes sense for us to dive, it means we can explore as much of this amazing planet as we can.

We want to live inspired lives and we want to inspire others. We want to fill our memories and memory cards with interesting colours, textures and experiences. The underwater world is full of unusual, mesmerizing and unique creatures that capture our imagination on every dive. Teaching gives us the opportunity to share our knowledge and introduce others to a truly beautiful world below the surface.

Water

maths

We love this planet and we understand that water is essential to its future health as well as our own. We heard Jacques Cousteau when he said “people protect what they love” So we decided to show people what we knew they would love.

Inspiration

Why we do what we do... It’s all about Inspiration, Maths and Water

This is a great experience for students to have a go at scuba diving in the comfort of our heated dive pool!

First up students will complete a short orientation and safety briefing in one of our classrooms. It is here they will learn about the scuba diving equipment they will be using and what happens to their bodies when breathing underwater.

Next we will head downstairs to get fitted into wetsuits and scuba equipment. Once every one is ready, it’s time to jump into our diving pool. We start in the shallow end and introduce students nice and slowly to the exhilarating experience of breathing underwater. Once they are comfortable here, it’s off to the deep end to complete their first ever confined water scuba dive!

Our Have a Go sessions give students a unique opportunity to experience the underwater world. Whether it is taking their first breath on Scuba in our heated pool or seeing a seahorse for the first time in its natural environment, it will be an experience they will never forget.

A great advanced snorkelling skills course and introduction to our local marine environment.

The PADI Snorkelling Adventure is the perfect option to go beyond the pool and experience aquatic life in the snorkeller’s local environment. Snorkelling in the ocean opens up options such as marine life identification, photography, videography, exploration for artifacts and participating in research activities.

During the course students will learn about snorkelling specific equipment and the physiological effects of water pressure on the body. In the pool students will practise entries and exits, use the buddy system and complete surface dives. They will learn rescue techniques such as the buddy tow, cramp release on self and buddy, emergency release of weight belt to gain buoyancy as well as duck dive and snorkel clearing methods.

In the ocean students will utilise the skills learned in the pool as well as assessing environmental conditions and hazards at the dive site.

In our Star Dive Courses, students will gain NZQA Unit Standards while also studying towards a PADI Dive Certification! These courses give students a taster of our Tertiary Career Programmes as well as teaching a wide range of other life skills including responsibility, teamwork, physiology, physics, ecology, self-reliance, advanced navigation, weather interpretation, boating and marine biology.

Online Theory - Dive courses require students to master not only the equipment they will be using during their dives but also the new environment they will be entering. The underwater environment affects how we see, how we move, how we navigate, how our body works, how we perceive things and how we can interact with the environment around us.

In both our PADI Open Water Diver and PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Courses, students will complete the theory or knowledge development part of their course, using PADI’s state of the art online eLearning framework.

Students will be presented with interactive videos, slide shows, quizzes

as well as a final exam. On the first day of their course students will complete a quick quiz to ensure they have remembered what they have learnt online. If a student is having trouble with anything our qualified instructors are only a phone call away.

Equipment - We provide all of the equipment students will need during their course except for swimsuits and towels. We do however, always recommend students purchase their own where possible. Dive equipment will always work best when fitted to the individual. Most people who have tried snorkelling will understand the discomfort a leaking mask can cause and when scuba diving comfort becomes even more important. Students who own their own equipment or at least

some of the essentials are also more likely to continue diving after their course.

Safety - Teachers and parents who are not divers themselves often question the safety of this unfamiliar sport. PADI’s diving standards ensure all dive centres and instructors adhere to a strict set of guidelines that keep all students learning to dive safe. Dive Otago is recognised as a PADI 5 STAR Career Development Centre, the first and only dive centre in New Zealand to obtain this rating. This rating ensures that your students are receiving top level service and training. Since opening in 1996 we have trained over 2300 people to scuba dive.

Dive Otago provides our students with an extraordinary opportunity. Our young students all return to school positive and excited about the experience they have had. The photographs that come back with the students are enlightening and we use them in our school newsletter or the community newspaper. The staff are very helpful and understanding with any enrolment problems that arise, making the enrolment process easy.

The world’s most popular learn to dive course

A one week course is designed to introduce secondary school students to the world of diving. The PADI Open Water Dive Course is the entry level qualification required to dive independently of an instructor to a depth of 18m.

During the course students will learn the theory behind what happens to our bodies while underwater, how the different equipment works and how to plan dives safely. They will also practise their dive skills in our heated indoor pool. Finally we will take them to the ocean for four dives over two days. In the ocean they will demonstrate skills and then go for a guided dive with our instructors.
