ABSTRACTThis Unit is designed for students with no previous diving qualifications. It provides an introductory, basic diving unit to attain a PADI Open Water diving certificate. Building on these skills the unit then teaches film and photography students the theory and practice of underwater film production and photography, a growth area and one that offers career opportunities. The programme will provide them with an appreciation of the differences and complexities of working within the underwater environment and the opportunity to put new found skills and ideas into practice.
AIMS
1. To teach students the foundational knowledge and skills they need to dive using open circuit self contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA), with a buddy and independent of supervision.
2. To ensure students are capable of organising, planning and conducting no-decompression diving activities within their level of experience.
3. To introduce film and photography students to the theory and practice of working underwater.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate the operation and use of SCUBA diving equipment.
2. Display proficiency in basic diving safety and rescue procedures.
3. Apply the physical and physiological principles of diving.
4. Plan, organise and conduct safe diving activities appropriate to the circumstances
5. Use decompression tables and procedures for no decompression diving correctly.
6. Describe and explain the main features of HSE legislation, Risk Assessment, Project Reports and the conduct of a diving project, within the Media Approved Codes of Practice.
7. Use and explain a range of techniques used in underwater film production and photography:
8. Plan and undertake a series of dives and produce a short underwater film or photography portfolio based on specific subject areas
SYLLABUS
1. Diving Theory and Physiology2. Diving equipment3. Practical Diving skills4. HSE legislation and Approved Codes of Practice (Media)5. Underwater cameras and housings including care and maintenance6. Planning, organization, production of assessed project work and management7. Diver supervision and Underwater communication8. Principles of underwater lighting9. Principles of filming underwater, including composition, sequence and shots, camera moves10.Principles of underwater stills photography
ASSESSMENT PATTERN
The assessment will be by the PADI Open Water Course as a PASS\FAIL artefact to assess LO1-3, two PASS/FAIL knowledge development verification tests that will assess LO4-7, and the production of a short film production or photography portfolio for LO8.
INDICATIVE READING
1. PADI Open Water Diver Manual2. HSE Diving at Work Regulations 19973. Approved code of practice for Media Diving Operations
LEARNING AND TEACHING STRATEGY
This unit comprises a series of lectures, practical diving skills in both confined and open water environments, and assessed diving exercises. Formative feedback will be provided throughout the lecture and practical classes.
PRESENTATION OF WORK
1. An online journal (blog)
2. A presentation of final images either printed, exhibition or online.
Students are expected to produce a portfolio of filming / photographic work and associated journal of process experiments, image plans, drawings, films, written and visual material, demonstrating both thematic and technical research and experimentation in technique, format and media.
This needs to be shown in the form of an online journal (blog). Please email your blog url/address to [email protected]
Completed films or photographic portfolios should be executed with high regard to presentation and film/photographic convention and wherever appropriate work should be fully edited and presented in a professional manner.

Unit blog - http://portsmouthunderwater.tumblr.com/
This will be updated regularly with unit information, resources and behind the scenes photos and films from students on the unit.
A blog simply lets you post stories, research, key information about your journey on this unit. At the end of the unit you have to present a film or photographic portfolio. You are required to use the blog to document this. Your ideas, processes and work in progress.
A blog allows you to upload photos, sound, videos and some of the options below also work via mobile. You can also create pages to separate your work into e.g. Research | Development | Dives | Final Film or Photographs
Would welcome any contributions from students.
To start your own blog for the unit you can use:Tumblr - www.tumblr.comWordpress - http://wordpress.com/Blogger - www.blogger.com
