In Ligte LuimDie vliegtuig het pas opgestyg. Een manlike passasier sit en byt sy vingernaels en vee heeltyd sweet van sy voorkop af. ‘n Lugwaardin sien hom raak en sê: ‘Meneer, kan ek vir u iets van die kroeg af kry om u te kalmeer?’ Die man knik instemmend terwyl hy vreeslik bewe. Sy kom met ‘n drankie en hy sluk dit haastig af. Tien minute later sien die lugwaardin dieselfde man erg bewe en sy naels byt. Sy bring hom nog ‘n drankie wat hy ook haastig afsluk. ‘n Halfuur later merk sy op dat die man nog erger bewe en ook saggies huil. ‘Ag siestog, Meneer,’ sê die lugwaardin, ek het nog nooit iemand gesien wat so bang is om te vlieg nie!’ ‘Ek is nie bang om te vlieg nie’, snik die man, ‘ek probeer ophou drink!’

Never waste cut rosesDid you know that you can grow roses from cuttings?Simply cut healthy stems, place them in large potatoes, and then bury them 3-4 inches deep in a healthy soil moisture of peet moss and top soil. The potatoes keep the stems moist and help develop the root systems. It’s a perfectly simple way to multiply your rose garden.

It’s a five minute walk from my house to the pub. It’s a 35 minute walk from the pub to my house.The difference is staggering!

Baie van ons sal graag: Amptelik wil bedank as volwassene en weer al die verantwoordelikhede van ‘n agtjarige aanvaar en… deur At MostertMcDonald’s toe wil gaan en dink dat dit ‘n 4 ster restaurant is. Weer wil stokkies op ‘n reën poeletjie laat seil en kaalvoet aan-aan speel. Wil dink dat Smarties beter as geld is want jy kan dit eet. Op ‘n warm somersdag onder ‘n groot skaduboom lê en saam met maatjies lê en droom met ‘n grassie innie mond. Weer wil terugkeer na ‘n tyd toe die lewe eenvoudig was, toe kennis beperk was tot speel, somme maak, maal- en deel-tafels en Siembamba. Net te weet om gelukkig te wees en salig onbewus te wees van al die dinge wat ontstel. Weer te dink dat die lewe goed en regverdig is, en almal eerlik en opreg is. Weer te glo dat enigiets moontlik is en salig onbewus wees van die kompleksiteite van die lewe en weer opgewonde raak oor die klein goedjies in die lewe soos, gekleurde popcorn en taai Wilson toffies. Weer eenvoudig lewe en nie dae beleef wat bestaan uit komputers, papierwerk, slegte nuus en hoe om meer dae te hanteer as wat daar geld in die bank is nie, doktersrekeninge, skinder, siektes en die verlies van geliefdes. Weer glo in die krag van ‘n glimlag, drukkies, ‘n vriendelike woord, die waarheid soos wat dit in die Begin bedoel was, regverdigheid, vrede, drome, verbeeldingsvlugte, die mens sonder sy maskers en motiewe, en sommer net modderkoekies bak. So... hier is my motorsleutels, my kredietkaartrekeninge en sommer alles wat na grootmens lyk. As jy nog vrae het en wonder, moet jy my eers inhol, want....... ‘Touch! Jy kan my tog nie vaaaang nie!!!!!’

The Car KeysMy car keys They weren’t in my pockets. Suddenly I realized I must have left them in the car. Frantically, I headed for the parking lot. My husband has scolded me many times for leaving my keys in the car’s ignition. He’s afraid that the car could be stolen. As I looked around the parking lot, I realized he was right. The parking lot was empty. I immediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the car, and that it had been stolen. Then I made the most difficult call of all to my husband: “I left my keys in the car and it’s been stolen.” There was a moment of silence. I thought the call had been disconnected, but then I heard his voice. “Are you kidding me?” he barked, “I dropped you off!” Now it was my turn to be silent. Embarrassed, I said, “Well, come and get me.” He retorted, “I will, as soon as I convince this cop that I didn’t steal your damn car!”

Blesmol (Cryptomys hottentotus)Ook bekend as – Vaalmol, Vaal tandmol, Knaagdiermol, Gewonemol en Kruipmol. Almal natuurlik streek name, en kom oor die hele Suid Afrika, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mosambiek , Namibië en ander Suider Afrika lande voor.

Die Blesmol is ‘n plantvreter (herbivoor). Hulle eet bolle, risome, wortels en ondergrondse graslote, en kan groot skade aan blomplante en grasperke veroorsaak deurdat hulle die blombolle, risome en wortels afvreet tot net onder die grond oppervlakte.

Die dier se pels kleure wat wissel van liggrys tot donker grys met ‘n witterige bles op die voorkop. Die volwasse mol weeg van 100 tot 150gram, kan tot 16.5cm lank word en het ‘n kort stertjie van tot solank as 3.8cm.

Hierdie soort mol is nie blind nie, maar hulle het ‘n baie beperkte sig. Hulle het nie sigbare ore nie maar wel gaatjies met binneore in die kop. Molle kan goed hoor en is geweldig sensitief vir trillings in die grond wat veroorsaak word deur voetstappe of ander bewegings bogronds.

Die Blesmol verkies sanderige en ander grond behalwe kleigrond. Hulle lewe in kolonies wat hoofsaaklik uit familie groepe bestaan, in ondergrondse tonnels, vlak onder die grondoppervlakte, met uitgestote die hopies grond wat hulle teenwoordigheid verklap. Aanteeltyd is gewoonlik in die somer wanneer tot 5 kleintjies gebore word.

Anders as wat algemeen geglo word, grawe hierdie molle hulle tonnels met hulle tande, en nie met die voorpote nie, maar gebruik die voorpote om die los grond dan onder hom deur te stoot waarna hy dit dan met agterpote verder agtertoe krap. Die hopies grond wat ons sien is die los gegrawe grond wat uitgestoot word om skoon oop gange van tonnels te vorm. (English page 21)

Common mole-rat (Criptomys hottentotus)by At MostertAll so known as African mole-rat and Hottentot mole-rat, all regional names and are found in South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe , Namibia and other Southern African countriesThe Common mole-rat is a plant eater (herbivore). They eat plant bulbs, roots and rhizomes. They can cause devastation in flowerbeds and lawns through them eating bulbs and roots to just below the ground surface.The animal’s fur colour varies from light grey to a dark grey with a whitish spot on the head, hence the Afrikaans name “Blesmol”. A grown common mole-rat can weigh from 100 up to about 150gram and can be as long as 16.5cm and has a short tail up to about 3.8cm long.This type of mole is not blind, but has very limited eyesight. They haven’t got visible ears but have holes in the head leading to inner ears. Moles can hear very well and are also very sensitive of any vibration caused by footsteps and movement on the ground surface .These moles prefer sandy and other types of soil, but not clayey soil. They live in colonies of, mainly family groups, in burrowed tunnels not too deep under the ground surface. The mounts of soil on lawns and flower beds give away their presence. Breeding time generally is during the summer times when a litter of up to 5 pups could be born.Contrary to the general believe, these mole-rats are digging their tunnels with their incisors (teeth) and not with their front feet. In digging, they loosen the soil with the incisors and use the front feet to push the loosen soil beneath the body to the rear legs which then push it back further. The mounts of soil we see are the soil which are pushed out to clear the tunnels
