FOREWORD At the instance of the Development Commissioner, Micro, Small &

Medium Enterprises, Government of India, New Delhi, District Industrial

Profile containing basic information about the district of Bhojpur has been

updated by MSME-DI, Patna under the Annual Plan 2019-20. It covers the

information pertaining to the availability of resources, infrastructural

support, existing status of industries, institutional support for MSMEs, etc.

I am sure this District Industrial Profile would be highly beneficial for

all the Stakeholders of MSMEs. It is full of academic essence and is expected

to provide all kinds of relevant information about the District at a glance.

This compilation aims to provide the user a comprehensive insight into the

industrial scenario of the district.

I would like to appreciate the relentless effort taken by Shri Ravi

Kant, Assistant Director (EI) in preparing this informative District

Industrial Profile right from the stage of data collection, compilation upto

the final presentation.

Brief Industrial Profile of Bhojpur District

1. General Characteristics of the District– Bhojpur district was carved out of erstwhile Shahbad district in 1992. The Kunwar Singh, the leader of the Mutineers during Sepoy Mutiny in 1857, was from district Bhojpur. Agriculture is the main source of income for majority of people of the district. Rice, Wheat & Gram are the three main crops grown in the district. There are different type of small & cottage industries other than some agro based industries in the district. The district headquarter is located at Ara town.

1.1 Location & Geographical Area: The geographical area of the district 2474 Sq Kms. It is located about 50 Km from Patna. There is Ganga river in North side and Aurangabad and Rohtas district are in the southern part and Patna district in east and Buxar district in the west. It is located at a Longitude of 83º-45' to 84º- 45' East and the latitude is 25º-10' to 25º-40' North.

1.2 Topography- The new Bhojpur districts consists of three sub-divisions, viz., Ara Sadar; Jagdishpur and Piro comprising 14 development blocks stretching over an area of 2,37,526 hectares. The entire strip of land between the river Ganga on the north and the main line of Eastern Railway on the south is low laying deposits of silt from the Ganges almost every year and is extremely fertile. In fact, this region is considered to be the best wheat-growing area in the state of Bihar .The district has rivers running almost three sides-North, East, and some part of Southern boundary. The Ganges forms the northern boundary of the district. The low-lying rich alluvial plains in the north-eastern and owe their fertility to the river Ganges. The rivers Chher and Banas fall into the Ganges. 1.3 Availability of Minerals:

Sand

Sand is major mineral of Bhojpur district of Bihar. Yellow sand in Sone river and Ganga river are major source of revenue collection in district as well as soil/clay is actively mined for bricks and pottery industry. In the financial year, huge amount of clay was produced for these purposes. It is also used as a decorative material in landscaping. Specific types of sand are used in the manufacture of glass and as a molding material for metal casting. Wide flood plains and high banks are the common features in the course of the Ganga and the Sone along with silt and clay deposits. 1.4 FOREST: The resources of forestry in this district are almost nil. 1.5 Administrative set up: The district has three sub-divisions namely Ara Sadar, Jagdishpur & Piro and 14 blocks, namely Arrah, Agiaon, Barhara, Koilwar, Udwantnagar, Sandesh, Sahar, Garhani, Piro, Charpokhari, Tarari, Jagdishpur, Bihiya and Shahpur. There is total 228 Panchayats covering 1209 villages in the district. 1.6 Economy: After bifurcation of the old Shahabad district in the new district of Bhojpur and Rohtas the large scale industries generally fell in Rohtas district. There are, however, different types of small & cottage industries other than some agro-based industries located in the district of Bhojpur. The District Statistical Report shows that between Apr-1992 and Aug-2000, 1085 small tiny and cottage industries were registered with the District Industry Centre, Bhojpur. Altogether the capital invested in these industries is Rs-869.19 Lacs. and 1858 persons are employed in these industries. There is an industrial area located at Gidha (Koilwar) spread in an area of 30-40 acres of land under the Bihar Industrial Area Development Authority. A bottling plant of Indane Gas (LPG) is also started in this area.

1.7 Culture & Heritage: Bhojpur district has a close linkage with that of its parent district of Shahabad, which had an old and interesting history. In the pre-historic days also there is evidence of the area being inhabited. The 1961 Census report of Shahabad describes the history of the district in following manner. It is said that Ara, the present headquarters of the district derives its name from the Sanskrit word ‘ARANYA’, which means forest. It suggests that the entire area around modern Ara was heavily forested in old days. According to mythology, sage Vishwamitra, the Guru of RAMA, had his ‘Ashram’ somewhere in this region. “The famous Chinese pilgrim, HIEUN-TSANG, who journeyed through the country in the seventh century A.D., paid a visit to Mo-Ho-Solo in Shahabad. This place has been identified with the present village Masarh, 10 k.m. west of Ara on Ara-Buxar road. The Chinese pilgrim found that the inhabitants were all Brahmins who did not respect the law of Buddha. He, therefore, felt disappointed and did not proceed to any other place in the district.” “Not much is known about the history of the district after the fall of Guptas. In all probability it relapsed into the hands of the aboriginal tribes and came under control of petty chieftains. The most dominant people during this period were Cheros. They ruled over the greater portion of the district. Then came the Rajputs from Ujjain in the province of Malwa . Raja Bhoj was their king and the term ‘Bhojpur’ now applicable to the area is derived from him.” The Medieval period history of this district has been described in the following words: “While encamping at Ara in 1529 after his victory over the Afghan rulers, Babar proclaimed his sovereignty over Bihar. In commemoration of this event, the place was called Shahabad, which literally means ‘the city of Emperor‘. This name was later applied to the Sarkar within which Ara was included and eventually toe entire district.” Akbar, after his accession, includes the district of Shahabad in his empire, though the control was not very tight. Akbar’s General Man Singh, made efforts to organize the revenue administration of the district on a sound footing. But the local chiefs continued to resist. The Rajas of Jagdishpur and Bhojpur defied the Mughals. The Raja of Bhojpur rebelled against Jahangir. His successor Raja Pratap, was done to death by Shahjahan and the Queen was forced to many a Muslim courtier. This finally quiet end the Bhojpur family but stray troubles continued till the last days of Mughals. After this the District had a very uneventful history till 1857 when Kunwar Singh revolted against the Britishers in line with the Mutineers.

Service sector can play a major role in reducing inequalities in the distribution of income in the economy. 4. Role of Technology in Industrial Growth: The Industrial Development Report (IDR) 2016 prepared by United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has shown that technology should be closely linked with innovation to ensure a sustainable development. A sustainable and inclusive industrialization can rapidly be achieved when policy makers provide appropriate policies to facilitate the process of industrialization, avoiding the mistakes other countries have made earlier.

Ministry of MSME, Govt of India is implementing various schemes for promotion of technological up gradation for MSMEs viz Credit Linked Capital Subsidy Scheme, Lean Manufacturing, Zero Defect Zero Effect (ZED), Incubation Scheme, etc. Govt of Bihar is also

giving emphasis on IT and ITeS, ESDM sectors by including them in High Priority Sector in Bihar Industrial Investment Promotion Policy 2016.

5. Role of Marketing Support in Industrial Growth: Marketing plays a vital role in economic growth in the present global world. It ensures the planned economic growth in the developing economy where the scarcity of goods, services, ideas and excessive unemployment, thereby marketing efforts are needed for mobilization of economic resources for additional production of ideas, goods and services resulting in greater employment. Marketing stimulates the aggregate demand thereby enlarges the size of market. Marketing in basic industries, agriculture, mining and plantation industries helps in distribution of output without which there is no possibility of mobilization of goods and services which is the key point for economic growth. These industries are the back bone of economic growth. It also accelerates the process of monetizing the economy which in turn facilitates the transfer of investible resources. It helps in discovery of entrepreneurial talent. Intermediate industrial goods and Semi-industrial products etc. essentially marketed for industrial purpose in order to develop the industrial sector with a view to economic growth. In Export trade and services like tourism and baking marketing plays eminent role in order to grow the economy.

Ministry of MSME, Govt of India is running several schemes for the purpose of marketing support to MSMEs namely Procurement & Marketing Support Scheme, Assistance in Modern Packaging Technique, Public Procurement Policy for MSEs, Development of Marketing Haats, Vendor Development Program, Domestic Trade Fair Participation Scheme, International Cooperation Scheme, etc.

During interaction with representatives of Bhojpur Chamber of Commerce, Bhojpur, Shahbad Chamber of Commerce, Ara, Bhojpur and Mahila Kala Kendra, Ara, Bhojpur and with District Industries Centre, Bhojpur, the issues raised related to easy credit availability to Small Sector Industries. Marketing Promotion activities required to be undertaken for existing units in the district. They have no access to Export Market. Modern Packaging requirements is also an issue for many existing units.

9. HERITAGE & TOURISM:

There are few places of attraction in Bhojpur district:

Sun Temple, Tarari : The Dev village of Tarari block has statue of the SUN GOD besides several other deities. These statues are said to be of 14 th century or even before.

Veer Kunwar Singh Qila, Jagdishpur : The great warrior of 1857 belonged to Jagdishpur. His fort is still there to reminds us of the great son of the soil who fought for the freedom till his last.

Maharaja College, Ara : The present Maharaja college premises is an important historical site. There is an entry point of a tunnel that is believed to be connected with the Jagdishpur fort of Kunwar Singh.

Shahi Masjid : This five Gumbad Masjid, the second of its kind in India was constructed by Shahjahan in 1623 AD. This is situated near Aranya Devi temple.

Karbala, Masjid of Maulabagh : This Masjid was built around 1817 with Aurangjeb’s assistance. It is situated at Maula Bagh muhalla at Ara.

Aranya Devi Temple : This is famous temple of Aranya Devi (Forest Goddess). She is said to be the deity goddess of Ara town . Here one statue is of ADI SAKTI and the second is established by the PANDAVAs. The temple is very old and draws many devotees every day. It is situated at the top of stone boulders.

Chaturvuj Narayan Mandir : This very ancient statue of Laxmi -Narayan is situated at Chaturvuj village of Piro block.

Bhavani Mandir : Chaturvuj Baraon – 13th century statue . Jagdamba Mandir : Here is an ancient statue of Goddess Jagdamba at

Mukundpur village of Charpokhari block.

Parswanath Mandir ; It is a century old Jain Temple located at Masadh Village. Mahamaya Mandir

This temple is at Ekwari village of Sahar block. This was made during Mughal period.
