Wells Gray World Heritage Celebrating 100 Years of Discovery of Helmcken Falls
In October 2013, Thompson Rivers University (TRU) will see the grand opening of the TRU Wilderness Centre. An exceptional building that will serve as a research centre in the Upper Clearwater Valley that will further outdoor learning and research of the wilds of the Clearwater Valley Wildlife Corridor.
The Wilderness Centre has been a long time vision of Tom Dickinson, Dean of Science at TRU. To celebrate this milestone event, Dr. Dickinson and Trevor Goward at Edgewood Blue are teaming up to host a yearlong series of guided tours, hikes, field courses, lectures, and children’s events – all on the theme of wilderness research and learning in the Clearwater Valley and Wells Gray Provincial Park. Wells Gray World Heritage Year will run from May through October 2013 – in celebration of the discovery of Helmcken Falls in 1913. (see back page for dates)

Tips to Conserve & Reserve Use a rain barrel Lawns only need 1 inch of water every 7 days to stay
green in the summer Leave grass at least 3 inches long. Longer grass re-
tains more moisture and requires less water ing Use a spring loaded shut -off device on al l hoses Use mulch, so water moisture is retained in the soi l
longer and plants stay cooler in hot weather Use a broom, not the hose, to clean driveways

Volunteers Needed for Seniors Mobility Study
From Front Door to Grocery Store: Getting seniors where they want to be in Clearwater
The Community Development Institute (UNBC) in collaboration with the District of Clearwater, and the local Age-
Friendly Community Committee (including members of Interior Health Authority, Yellowhead Community Services,
Evergreen Housing Society, Wells Gray Seniors Society, Friendly Club, Wells Gray Country Services, and the
Chamber of Commerce) is carrying out a community based research project to explore seniors’ mobility needs,
barriers and supports in Clearwater. The study process will involve a mobility journaling exercise, 3 interviews, 8 field
trips (4 in the summer and 4 in the winter) and 5 workshops over the next 3 years.
We are looking for 16 participants to collaborate with us in this study and take part in the research activities.
The group of 16 participants should represent seniors and older adults (55+) with a range of abilities—from
travelling unassisted, to using a mobility aid (e.g. hearing aid, scooter, walker, cane etc.). If you are interested in
participating in this project, please complete a ‘potential participant questionnaire’, available at the District of
Clearwater Office, Yellowhead Community

North Thompson Arts Council (NTAC)
The North Thompson Arts Council is a not-for-profit organization that
advocates for and supports local arts and culture. Fueled entirely by
volunteerism and support from local businesses, organizations and
individuals, NTAC organizes several community-based projects, events
and workshops throughout the North Thompson Valley.
NTAC aims to form a common link between local artists as well as the
greater community by creating opportunities for people to
experience what artists do with their skills, passion and time. The 2nd
Annual Art Crawl, organized for May 11th/12th this year, draws
community members into the studios of visual artists to see firsthand
how artists work. Maps available at the Community Resource Centre and the District of Clearwater will allow
people to personalize their tours, stopping at as many artist studios as they wish.
In collaboration with the District of Clearwater, NTAC is currently
working on a series of revolving exhibitions through which local
artists can display their work at the DOC offices. Artists at all
stages of their practice, supporters of the arts and groups such
as Thompson Valley Players and Wells Gray Gallery Cooperative
are members of the North Thompson Arts Council. Membership
is open to everyone and a strong membership base is important
to the vibrancy and effectiveness of a community arts council.
Even if people are unable to volunteer their time, becoming a
member of NTAC is an excellent way to support local arts and
culture.
More information about NTAC and how it promotes arts and
culture in our community can be found on NTAC’s website:
www.norththompsonartscouncil.com. Anyone wishing to get
involved in any capacity is encouraged to contact the North
Thompson Arts Council.

Sports Tournament Program
Community Recreation Health Living Program
Zumba programs with Brittany Pastorek wrapped up April 25th and all were sad to see her go! Unfortunately for her Zumba
followers she is not planning to come back to Clearwater to instruct classes in the future as she is beginning a new chapter in
her life and moving back home to Ottawa to be closer to family. We wish her all the best!
Youth Week celebrations kicked off on May 1st with the Clearwater’s Got Talent competition at the CSS pit. There were 15 youth
acts that performed at this entertaining and fun community event. The Clearwater Carnage BMX and Sk8 Competition was
held on May 4th at the Rotary Skateboard Park and was a lot of fun. This event is a great way for our local youth to showcase
their skills to an audience. Lastly, the committee organized Youth Awards to nominate a local youth and a youth mentor to be
recognized for their commitment to volunteerism and for being a positive role model to youth in the community. The Youth
Week committee worked hard to organize these events over the past months. Great job crew!
Learn to Run is in full swing! This program is again being instructed by Jennifer Wadlegger, the class is full! April 24 th the class had
a visit from registered Dietician, Simone Jennings who spoke about the importance of nutrition and fueling your body for fitness.
The talk was informative and the weather was beautiful.
The youth mountain biking program has begun and is full also. Chris Martin is again instructing this fun and educational program
and the youth are enjoying learning about simple bike maintenance as well as exploring some of our local trails. Mountain
Biking for Adults is scheduled to begin Thursday, May 30th, immediately following the end of the youth program.
Fall program planning has begun. Some ideas being worked on are gluten free baking, pole walking, dance, skateboarding,
and a variety fitness program that would include a nutritional component. Stay tuned for more info...
